I'm wondering how teamcity handles the checkout for multiple configurations. They recommend to use the Auto option where the checkout directory is shared between all configurations. Then, what happens if one configuration is currently building, and another is going to checkout? I think I really have to set different directories for these? Also if different configurations have run, their output gets overwritten by each other.
As a side-note: we have one project with three configurations, namely Continuous, Nightly and Weekly. Maybe I have to split them into different projects?! But on the other hand I think different projects are more suitable for different branches or so.

Teamcity won't ever run two builds on one agent at the same time, so you'll never have the case where two builds try to use the same directory at the same time.
But that aside, Teamcity will use a different directory for configurations with different VCS roots; it'll only share if they have the same VCS roots with the same checkout rules. But that shouldn't cause you any problems, if you set things up right.
Also if different configurations have run, their output gets overwritten by each other.
You shouldn't be relying on files being in that directory. If you need access to the files, you should publish them as artifacts, and set the build configurations that need them to have artifact dependencies on the artifacts.

You shouldn't have to; why would you need to split them? They can run fine in the same project, but you can move them into separate ones if you prefer.

Deploying test and production branches of a git repository on two separate subdomains using a script

I am currently working on a Linux bash script to deploy a specified branch of my git project on my website : the develop branch to a test subdomain and the main branch to the main domain.
To do so, I ask for a user input (the branch name) and execute my set of commands to deploy on the right subdomain. The only problem I have is that, these operations involve moving certain parts of the project and so, I don't really see how I could deploy the two versions. To me, the two options are :
Have two repositories to be able to use the two branches separately. This would work fine. BUT, that means I will use double the amount of space which doesn't seem right. (and my project is quite big)
Find a way to deploy two branches of one same repository on two different subdomains independently. Meaning that updating one doesn't update the other.
How could I use one repository from which I deploy two branches on two different subdomains ? Is it even possible ?
I thought that I could just switch to the choosed branch and then update but that changes the project for both versions, which seems logical now since the whole project is accessed.

Share Git repository directory across multiple build definitions

When a private agent build starts in VSTS, it gets assigned a directory, e.g. C:\vstsagent_work\1\s
Is there a way to set this to a different path? On other CI servers, like Jenkins, I can define a custom workspace for a job. I'm dealing with a huge monorepo and have dozens of build definitions around the same repository. It makes sense (to me anyway) to share a single directory on the build agent computer.
The benefit to me is that my builds can use pre-built components from upstream repositories, if they have already been built.

VSTS build always creates a working directory per build definition. This leaves you two options:
Create a single build definition and use conditionals on steps to skip certain steps in order to only run what is needed. This allows you to use the standard steps and may require a powershell script to figure out which steps to run and which ones to skip. Set variables from powershell using the special logging commands.
Disable the get sources step and add a step that manually fetches sources. You'll need to clean the working directory, checkout the right commit, basically replicating the actions in the get sources step manually. It may require some fidgeting to get all the behavior correctly for normal build, pull request builds etc. That way you can take full control over the location where sources are checked out.
I'd also recommend you investigate the 2017 project formats that use the new <packageReference> in the project files to fetch packages. The new system supports configuring a version range which can always fetch the latest available version of packages. It's a better long-term solution.
No, it isn’t available in VSTS build system.
You can change working directory of agent (C:\vstsagent_work) (Re-configure it and specify another working folder), but it won’t uses the same source folder for different build definitions, the folder would be 1, 2, 3 ….

Teamcity build chain templating

We have set of different web application projects, which is delivered by Teamcity to different environments. At this moment, we are doing all-in-one builds: compile, package and deploy at once; all based on a templates.
Now I am investigating a way to separate concenrs: one build tests and produces package, another - delivers. Naturally, both builds are having own templates. Is there a way to template this build chain - so, when I choose some meta-template - both builds will be created with present Artifact dependencies?
Sadly not. What we've had to do is clone the build chains. We've put in place a mechanism which makes sure the set-ups of the different chains do not diverge.
Another option, admittedly ugly, is to set up a single build chain and let each of your projects pretend that it's a separate VCS branch. In this case there's a single set-up (for the single build chain) and to view the history of a given project you filter by that project "branch". Needless to say, that's not how branches should be used and you may run into some issue down the line.

Maven publishing artefacts to remote repository and using $release in the artefact version

Wondering how people manage their project artefacts through an environment lifecycle of say DEV - AQA - CQA - RELEASE and if there's some best practices to follow.
I use a Jenkins build server to build my projects (code checkout then maven build). My artefacts all have version 1.0.0-SNAPSHOT and are published to a local .m2 repo on the build server. There are also Jenkins jobs that rebuild the DEV system (on the same server) using those artefacts. The project build is automated whenever someone checks in code. The DEV build is automated on a nightly basis.
At some point, my lead developer determines that our project is fit to go to AQA (the first level of testing environment on a different server).
For this I need to mark the artefacts as version 1.0.0-1 and publish to a remote AQA repository (it's actually a Nexus repo).
The Maven deploy plugin sounds like the right approach, but how do I change the version number to be effectively 1.0.0-$release (where $release is just an incrementing number starting from 1)? Would Maven/Nexus be able to manage the value of $release, or would I need a simple properties file in my project to store/update the last used $release.
Furthermore, someone tests AQA and determines its fit to move on to CQA (second testing env). This is 'promote to AQA'. So my requirement is to copy the artefact from the AQA Nexus repo and publish to the CQA Nexus repo.
Likewise, after CQA, there'd be a 'promote to RELEASE' job too.
I think the version value remains unchanged during the 'promote' phases. I'd expect the AQA repo to see all versions 1-50, but CQA only 25 and 50, then RELEASE only 50, for example.
I can find loads of info about Maven plugins/goals/phases, but very little about a prescriptive method on how or where to use outside of the immediate development environment.

Staging/promoting is out of scope for Maven. Once deployed/uploaded to a remote repository, that system is responsible for the completion of the release cycle. Read this chapter about staging: http://books.sonatype.com/nexus-book/reference/staging.html if you use Nexus.
Build numbers are just that build numbers. They are not promotion / staging numbers.
You should come up with another means of tracking your promotions, because otherwise one might get confused in "knowing" that build 10.1.4-2 is the same as 10.1.4-6. Certainly, all of the Maven related software will see those two builds as different builds.
In addition, if a person "grabs" the wrong copy of the build, the way you are managing staging within your build number will increase confusion. As if you don't kill all of the 10.1.4-2 builds, then someone might get a copy of that not realizing that the build has been promoted to 10.1.4-6. This means that for the "last" staging number to be the most likely one to be grabbed, you must do two things (which are impossible in combination)
Remove all the old staging numbers, updating them to the new ones.
Ensure that no copy of an old staging number escaped the update.
Since people generally can copy files without being tracked, or said files might not be reachable at time up "update", or timing between reaching all the files cannot be simultaneous, such a system is doomed to fail.
Instead, I recommend (if you must track by file), placing the same file in different "staging directories". This defines release gateways by whether the file exists in a certain directory, and makes it clear that it is the same file that is going through the entire process. In addition, it becomes easy to have various stages of verification poll their respective directories (and you can write Jenkins tasks to promote from one directory to another, if you really wish).

In Bamboo, how do I pull a component library repository to a fixed location to avoid per-branch duplication?

I have several projects which use code from a large set of component libraries. These libraries are under source control.
The libraries repository contains all the libraries used by all my projects and contains multiple versions of multiple libraries. Each library/version pair lives in its own folder. Each of my projects identifies the specific library/version pairs it needs through the folder paths of the references in its project file.
For example $(LibraryPath)\SomeLibrary\v1.1.5
Please note that the libraries repository is only ever added to. No changes are made to stuff already in the repository. Ever.
I have been of course been able to configure my build plan to pull the libraries repository to a libraries subfolder of the working directory. So far so good. However, using the auto branch management feature of Bamboo, this setup means that the libraries repository is cloned for each and every branch in all projects.
Not funny. No, really, not funny...
What I would like to do is:
pull the libraries repository in each build plan
but pull it to a fixed location that is the same for all build plans
it doesn't have to be an absolute path
but it does need to be outside the working directory of the current build plan to avoid unnecessary duplication
Unfortunately the Checkout Directory of the Source Code Checkout configuration task in a Bamboo build plan doesn't allow me to specify either an absolute path or a relative one that goes "up" for one or more levels from the working dir. The hint text explicitly states "(Optional) Specify an alternative sub-directory to which the code will be checked out." And indeed, specifying something like ..\Library gets punished with the message "Checkout to parent directory is forbidden".
I have seen information on the "artifact sharing" feature of Bamboo. This will probably work, but it seems like overkill for what I want to achieve.
What would be the easiest and least complicated way to achieve my goal using Atlassian's Bamboo Continuous Integration?
Out-of-the-box alternatives are welcome, but please don't direct me to any products that require intimate CLI use and/or whose documentation assumes (extensive) knowledge of 'nix and/or Java setup. I am on Windows and spoiled rotten by powerful (G)UI's.
I have the same problem - with a repository weighing in at around 2GB.
I'd like to simply "git checkout myBranch" and "git clean -fxd" instead of cloning every time (which should save a lot of time and disk space). However I also like Bamboo's automatic trigger with new branches showing up.
Like the OP, I'd love to be able to put "..\SharedDirectory" in the "CheckoutDirectory" for the
"Source Code Checkout" task but it won't let me go out above the \JOB_KEY\ folder
One possible solution is: replacing the "Source Code Checkout" task with the two git commands above. That way I can specify exact when/where/how to do the checkout. I think there may be problems with the initial checkout in this case - but once that is solved, all subsequent branches would use the same shared folder, and no more pulling down 2GB every time.
