I am trying to use LINQ (to EF) to get a DISTINCT list and then sort it. All the examples I found sort the result based on the DISTINCT value. But I want to sort it on a different field.
Example: Table with 2 fields (canvasSize and canvasLength);
var sizes = (from s in ent.competitors
select s.canvasSize).Distinct().OrderBy(x => x);
All the examples I found give this type of answer. But it sorts by canvasSize whereas, I want to sort by canvasLength.
I'm stuck ... Any tips are greatly appreciated ...

I would like it to be distinct on canvasSize. The problem is that when sorted, it results in this order:

I think what you're after may be something like this:

The order I would like the end result to appear in is Exact Matches first given a input string, followed by other matches that are Contains for a given field. I tried to approach this in a very rudimentary way as shown here in this example:
var raw = Model.SearchResults.Where(m => m.EffectiveDateTime != null).OrderBy(m => m.EffectiveDateTime).ToList();
var exact = raw.Where(m => m.IssueNumber.ToLower() == Model.SearchText.ToLower());

This approach seems like it'd be a really bad way to do this. In fact, the Union portion seems to effectively crash my application. Is there an opposite to Intersection which would give me the remaining results outside the Exact matches that I could then append to a final list so that the order would be Exact Matches followed by StartsWith matches followed finally by Contains matches in that descending order?
To answer your original question, you can use a temporary expression to classify the match types, then order by the match type and other criteria, and it will translate to SQL as well:

I did the double Select to emulate let from fluent syntax, which I think is a bit clearer than lambda syntax in this case:

Also, if you do the whole query in the database, the ToLower is likely unnecessary, as the default for SQL is probably to be case-insensitive anyway.
Actually, I went back to the drawing board and figured it out. This is a little bit better for me and returns the results I needed.

I need to pull out distinct sections in correct section order. Here is the linq that I'm using, but it's not putting them in the correct order for some reason.

orderby x.SectionOrder ascending
select x.Section).Distinct();
I then want to be able to loop through myVar and put each item in a list as follows:

The ordering of OrderBy and Distinct matters: while OrderBy produced an ordered sequence, Distinct doesn't. You need to put Distinct first, and then use OrderBy. However, since you take Distinct on one attribute, and order on the other attribute, you need to do it differently:
var myVar = context
.Documents
.GroupBy(x => x => x.Section) // This replaces Distinct()
.OrderBy(g => g.FirstOrDefault().SectionOrder) // There will be no default
.Select(g => g.Key);
This approach replaces Distinct with GroupBy, and orders on the first SectionOrder item of a group. You can change this sorting strategy to sort on some other item within the Section, say, Min or Max value of SectionOrder:

Linq newbie here, struggling with my first GroupBy query.
I have a list of objects of type KeywordInstance which represents a keyword, and the ID of the database record to which the keyword was applied.
Keyword RecordID

cell cycle 3
map kinase 2

What I want is a collection of all keywords, with a list of the RecordIDs to which each keyword was applied.
Keyword RecordIDs
macrophages 1, 2
cell cycle 1, 3

I tried using Linq to get it into a new object. I only managed to get the distinct keywords.
var keywords = allWords
.GroupBy(w => w.keyword)
.Select(g => new {keyword = g.Key});
The problem is that I can't seem to get the values of g in any way. g is of the type IGrouping<String, KeywordInstance> and by documentation, it only has the property Key, but not even the property Value. All the examples I have seen on the Internet for groupby just tell me to select g itself, but the result of
var keywords = allWords
.GroupBy(w => w.keyword)
.Select(g => new {keyword = g.Key, RecordIDs = g});
is not what I want.
Any try to get something out of g fails with the error message System.Linq.IGropuing<string, UserQuery.KeywordInstance> does not have a definition for [whatever I tried].
What am I doing wrong here?
I think you are close to you solution.

Just Select the records you need.
The reason you are seeing the Keyword-column as well as the ID-column, is becuase it's part of g
var keywords = allWords.GroupBy(w => w.keyword);
foreach (var itm in keywords)
{
var list = itm.ToList();
//list returns all of the original properties/values objects from allwords.
//itm.key returns w.keyword

I have an xml document
<NumSet>

<num>2</num>

I want unique elements shown up, ie 1 and 3. not distinct which will also bring out 2.
How to do that? Do I have to use Group? Is there any concise way to do that?
You are right, you can use GroupBy and filter group which has only one item by using Count() == 1:

To do what you need I'd say that yes, you need to use GrouBy, and then count the elements in each group, and return those that contains just one element. In code, this translates to:

I am a newbie to Linq. I am trying to write a linq query to get a min value from a set of records. I need to use groupby, where , select and min function in the same query but i am having issues when using group by clause. here is the query I wrote

I am not able to use group by and where together it keeps giving error .

Select all the values.
filter it through the where clause (pathnum).
Groupby the road Name
finally get the min value.
can some one tell me what i am doing wrong and how to achieve the desired result.

It's a little tricky not knowing the relationships between the data, but I think (without trying it) that this should give you want you want -- the minimum speed per road by name. Note that it will result in a collection of anonymous objects with Name and Speed properties.
