Is there an easy way to see what session variables exist and their values using Visual Studio running an MVC3 application in debug mode.
Thanks
You could output something like this:-
foreach (string key in Session.Keys)
{
Response.Write(key + " - " + Session[key] + "<br />");
}
Of course, it's a "normal" ASP.NET application:
Try Request.RequestContext.HttpContext.Session
Normally you can use "Session" directly, e.g.
Session["key"]
You may try it in an immediate window in debug mode ...

I try to test the jdbc connection of snowflake with codes below
Connection conn = .......
.......
ResultSet rs = conn.getMetaData().getColumns(**null**, "PUBLIC", "TAB1", null); // 1. set parameters to get metadata of table TAB1
while (rs.next()) { // 2. It hangs here if the first parameter is null in above liune; otherwise(set the corrent db name), it works fine
System.out.println( "precision:" + rs.getInt(7)
+ ",col type name:" + rs.getString(6)
+ ",col type:" + rs.getInt(5)
+ ",col name:" + rs.getString(4)
+ ",CHAR_OCTET_LENGTH:" + rs.getInt(16)
+ ",buf LENGTH:" + rs.getString(8)
+ ",SCALE:" + rs.getInt(9));
}
.......
I debug the codes above in Intellij IDEA, and find that the debugger can't get the details of the object, it always shows "Evaluating..."
The JDBC driver I used is snowflake-jdbc-3.12.5.jar
Is it a bug?
When the catalog (database) argument is null, the JDBC code effectively runs the following SQL, which you can verify in your Snowflake account's Query History UIs/Views:
show columns in account;
This is an expensive metadata query to run due to no filters and the wide requested breadth (columns across the entire account).
Depending on how many databases exist in your organization's account, it may require several minutes or upto an hour of execution to return back results, which explains the seeming "hang". On a simple test with about 50k+ tables dispersed across 100+ of databases and schemas, this took at least 15 minutes to return back results.
I debug the codes above in Intellij IDEA, and find that the debugger can't get the details of the object, it always shows "Evaluating..."
This may be a weirdness with your IDE, but in a pinch you can use the Dump Threads (Ctrl + Escape, or Ctrl + Break) option in IDEA to provide a single captured thread dump view. This should help show that the JDBC client thread isn't hanging (as in, its not locked or starved), it is only waiting on the server to send back results.
There is no issue with the 3.12.5 jar.I just tested the same version in Eclipse, I can inspect all the objects . Could be an issue with your IDE.
ResultSet columns = metaData.getColumns(null, null, "TESTTABLE123",null);
while (columns.next()){
System.out.print("Column name and size: "+columns.getString("COLUMN_NAME"));
System.out.print("("+columns.getInt("COLUMN_SIZE")+")");
System.out.println(" ");
System.out.println("COLUMN_DEF : "+columns.getString("COLUMN_DEF"));
System.out.println("Ordinal position: "+columns.getInt("ORDINAL_POSITION"));
System.out.println("Catalog: "+columns.getString("TABLE_CAT"));
System.out.println("Data type (integer value): "+columns.getInt("DATA_TYPE"));
System.out.println("Data type name: "+columns.getString("TYPE_NAME"));
System.out.println(" ");
}
I've built a Xamarin.Forms app that is using a DLL from a tierce app to send kind of SQL command (this is not SQL !)
Probleme is that it only provides synchronous methods and my app is then "not responding". How can I do an asynchronous method that will call the sycnhronous one and wait for its result without hanging the UI ?
I tried the following but it seems to be waitng forever like if thread was never stopping.
public async Task<ExecuteCommandResult> ExecuteMocaCommandAsync(String ps_command)
{
return await Task<ExecuteCommandResult>.Run(() =>
{
return ExecuteMocaCommand(ps_command);
}
);
}
and I'm calling it like this :
ExecuteCommandResult l_res = l_con.ExecuteMocaCommandAsync("list users where usr_id = '" + gs_UserName + "'").Result;
I'm clearly missing something and hope you can point me in the good direction.
Regards,
Yoz
The Task.Run looks good (though you can simplify it by changing Task<ExecuteCommandResult>.Run to just Task.Run). That's the proper way to push blocking work to a background thread in a UI application.
However, you can't use Result; that can deadlock. You'll need to call your method using await:
ExecuteCommandResult l_res = await l_con.ExecuteMocaCommandAsync("list users where usr_id = '" + gs_UserName + "'");
How can I get a list of installed VisualStudio extensions? Somehow through DTE? Just the names would be fair enough.
Does this help:
System.IServiceProvider serviceProvider = package as System.IServiceProvider;
Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.IVsExtensionManager em =
(Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.IVsExtensionManager)serviceProvider.GetService(
typeof(Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.SVsExtensionManager));
string result = "";
foreach(Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.IInstalledExtension i in em.GetInstalledExtensions())
{
Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.IExtensionHeader h = i.Header;
if (!h.SystemComponent)
result += h.Name + " (by " + h.Author + ") v" + h.Version + " " + h.MoreInfoUrl + System.Environment.NewLine;
}

Another possibility, if you don't want DTE, because you are not running from within Visual Studio or are concerned about performance you can query the extensions from the file system / registry:
For User Extensions
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio*.vsix
For General Extensions
\Common7\IDE\Extensions*.vsix
IF you want to be 100% correct you can look up the paths in
\Common7\IDE\devenv.pkgdef
NOTE: There can be additional paths in the PkgDefSearchPath.
To check wether a User Extensions is enabled or not you have to query the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ExtensionManager\EnabledExtensions
There are some other rules that apply, which you can find in this blog from Microsoft:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2010/02/19/how-vsix-extensions-are-discovered-and-loaded-in-vs-2010.aspx
I'm trying to create a CSV export for some data I have. Seems simple enough, and works beautifully in Firefox and Chrome, but in Internet Explorer I just get a message saying the file could not be downloaded. No other error messages, no break in Visual Studio, no debugging information that I can find.
Here's my code. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
public ActionResult ExportStudentsCSV(IEnumerable<Student> students) {
MemoryStream output = new MemoryStream();
StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(output, System.Text.Encoding.UTF8);
writer.WriteLine("Username,Year Level,School Name,State,Date Joined");
foreach (Student student in students) {
writer.WriteLine(
"\"" + student.username
+ "\",\"" + student.year_level
+ "\",\"" + student.SchoolName
+ "\",\"" + student.state
+ "\",\"" + student.join_date
+ "\""
);
}
writer.Flush();
output.Seek(0, SeekOrigin.Begin);
return File(output, "text/csv", "Students_" + DateTime.Now.ToShortDateString().Replace('/', '-') + ".csv");
}
And I'm calling this function in my controller with:
return ExportStudentsCSV(model.StudentReport.StudentList);
You may need to add a Content-Disposition header.
In your ExportStudentsCSV function, before returning:
var cd = new System.Net.Mime.ContentDisposition();
cd.FileName = "filename.csv";
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", cd.ToString());
Or if you'd rather be brief about it (equivalent to above):
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=filename.csv");
It may seem dodgy to be answering my own question, but I thought my experience may help someone. I did some more digging and found a completely alternate way of doing this using DataTables and a specific CsvActionResult which inherits from FileResult.
See this gist: https://gist.github.com/777376
Probably has something to do with the Content-Type/Content-Dispositon because IE follows standards when it wants to.
Check out ASP MVC3 FileResult with accents + IE8 - bugged?
It looks like a recent windows update has broken some functionality I was using to recycle IIS6 application pools, as this has been working for months up to today.
Exception calling "Recycle" : "Win32: The object identifier does not representException calling "Recycle" : "Win32: The object identifier does not represent a valid object.
the function I was using to recycle the application pools was:
function recycle-pool($strServerName)
{
$objWMI = [WmiSearcher] "Select * From IIsApplicationPool"
$objWMI.Scope.Path = "\\" + $strServerName + "\root\microsoftiisv2"
$objWMI.Scope.Options.Authentication = 6
$pools = $objWMI.Get()
foreach ($pool in $pools)
{
$pool.recycle()
if (!$?)
{
Write-Host $pool.name " - ERROR"
}
else
{
Write-Host $pool.name " - Recycled"
}
}
Any idea on what the problem is and how I should approach this?
The original question was for IIS6, but I ran into something similar using the WebAdministration Module's Restart-WebAppPool on Windows 2012. So I dropped back to calling AppCMD, and that worked fine:
& $env:windir\system32\inetsrv\appcmd recycle apppool "YOURAPPPOOLNAMEHERE"
Sometimes, you don't have to over-engineer the solution. Hope that helps others some day.
One of the application pools was stopped, which was causing the error. The other application pools were recycling fine. The code above is ok to use for anyone else.
You can try to recycle with ADSI:
$server = "IIsServerName"
$iis = [adsi]"IIS://$server/W3SVC/AppPools"
$iis.psbase.children | foreach {
$pool = [adsi]($_.psbase.path)
$pool.psbase.invoke("recycle")
}
