I am working on an application in mvc4.I want the application to work in English and Russian.I got titles in russian, but error messages are still in english.
My model contains:-
[Required(ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof(ValidationStrings),
ErrorMessageResourceName = "CountryNameReq")]
public string CountryName { get; set; }
if(ModelState.IsValid) becomes false it will go to GetErrorMessage()
public string GetErrorMessage()
{
CultureInfo ci = new CultureInfo(Session["uiCulture"].ToString());
System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = ci;
System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = CultureInfo.CreateSpecificCulture(ci.Name);
string errorMsg = string.Empty;
int cnt = 1;
var errorList = (from item in ModelState
where item.Value.Errors.Any()
select item.Value.Errors[0].ErrorMessage).ToList();
foreach (var item in errorList)
{
errorMsg += cnt.ToString() + ". " + item + "</br>";
cnt++;
}
return errorMsg;
}
But i always get error message in English.How can i customize the code to get current culture.
The reason for that is because you are setting the culture too late. You are setting it inside the controller action, but the validation messages were added by the model binder much earlier than your controller action even started to execute. And at that stage the current thread culture was still the default one.
To achieve that you should set the culture much earlier in the execution pipeline. For example you could do that inside the Application_BeginRequest method in your Global.asax
Just like that:
protected void Application_BeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
CultureInfo ci = new CultureInfo(Session["uiCulture"].ToString());
System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = ci;
System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = CultureInfo.CreateSpecificCulture(ci.Name);
}

I'm trying to create an app that supports multilabel languages, in which I have a settings page that allows the user to chose a language, then the View Model would publish a message using the MessagingCenter, then finally, MainActivity would respond to this message
and that's the code sample for the above mentioned
private async void HandleSelectedLanguageChanged()
{
if (SelectedLanguage == null || !this.isInitialized)
return;
MessagingCenter.Send(this, Constants.LanguageChanged, SelectedLanguage);
ShowLoading();
await Task.Delay(1000);
await NavigationService.NavigateAsync($"/{Routes.Landing}/{CallbackPage ?? Routes.Login}");
HideLoading();
}

CultureInfo.CurrentCulture = selectedCulture;
CultureInfo.CurrentUICulture = selectedCulture;
System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = selectedCulture;
System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = selectedCulture;
var selectedCulture = Common.Settings.Settings.CurrentCultureInfo.ToDescriptionString().Split('-');
if (selectedCulture.Length == 2)
{
var selectedLang = selectedCulture[0];
var selectedCountry = selectedCulture[1];
var locale = new Java.Util.Locale(selectedLang, selectedCountry);
Java.Util.Locale.Default = locale;
var config = new Android.Content.Res.Configuration { Locale = locale };
Resources.UpdateConfiguration(config, BaseContext.Resources.DisplayMetrics);
}
the code in the MainActivity was simplified for the purpose of this
question there are some device specific cultural configurations that
are not relevant to this question, also I made sure that
selectedCulture contains the intended culture, the code of creating
this object is irrelevant to this question.
The weird thing is, the culture is only changed for the first page I navigate to, and reverts back for every other page in the app.
here's the code for the translation MarkupExtension that I use for this
[ContentProperty("Text")]
public class BaseTranslateExtension : IMarkupExtension
{
private string _resourceId;
private Type _assemblyType;
public BaseTranslateExtension(string resourceId, Type assemblyType)
{
_resourceId= resourceId;
_assemblyType = assemblyType;
}
public string Text { get; set; }
public object ProvideValue(IServiceProvider serviceProvider)
{
if (Text == null)
return null;
ResourceManager resourceManager = new ResourceManager(_resourceId, _assemblyType.GetTypeInfo().Assembly);
return resourceManager.GetString(Text, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture);
}
}
the CurrentCulture seems to only be set to the new culture for the first page only, for every other page it's just the same old value, which is weird since it's a static property that I'm sure is not being set anywhere else in the code
I don't have language strings in Android resources, but in (old?) resx files. Maybe that's why I could use the following solution: also set the cultures of the default thread.
string cultureCode = GetUserRequestedAppCultureCode(); // For example: "en-US".
var selectedCulture = new CultureInfo(cultureCode);
CultureInfo.DefaultThreadCurrentCulture = selectedCulture;
CultureInfo.DefaultThreadCurrentUICulture = selectedCulture;
CultureInfo.CurrentCulture = selectedCulture;
CultureInfo.CurrentUICulture = selectedCulture;
For Xamarin.Android it is sufficient to run this code at (each) app start only. You can also switch languages this way at runtime without the need of restarting your app.
string message = string.Empty;

var modelState = actionContext.ModelState;

actionContext.Response = actionContext.Request.CreateErrorResponse(HttpStatusCode.BadRequest, modelState);
foreach (var key in modelState.Keys)
{
var state = modelState[key];
if (state.Errors.Any())
{
message = message + state.Errors.First().ErrorMessage;
}
}
}
Here i want to return message variable with Jsonresult, please help me on it.
Try this
public override void OnActionExecuting(HttpActionContext context)
{
var modelState = context.ModelState;
if (!modelState.IsValid)
{
var errors = new JObject();
foreach (var key in modelState.Keys)
{
var state = modelState[key];
if (state.Errors.Any())
{
errors[key] = state.Errors.First().ErrorMessage;
}
}
context.Response = context.Request.CreateResponse<JObject>(HttpStatusCode.BadRequest, errors);
}
}
From the client ajax request, on error, get the responseText to process the validation error messages.
You might want to pick a HttpStatusCode based on what you are trying to do, since the
I have this two objects - Magazine and Author (M-M relationship):
public partial class MAGAZINE
{
public MAGAZINE()
{
this.AUTHORs = new HashSet<AUTHOR>();
}
public long REF_ID { get; set; }
public string NOTES { get; set; }
public string TITLE { get; set; }
public virtual REFERENCE REFERENCE { get; set; }
public virtual ICollection<AUTHOR> AUTHORs { get; set; }
}
public partial class AUTHOR
{
public AUTHOR()
{
this.MAGAZINEs = new HashSet<MAGAZINE>();
}
public long AUTHOR_ID { get; set; }
public string FULL_NAME { get; set; }
public virtual ICollection<MAGAZINE> MAGAZINEs { get; set; }
}
}
My problem is that I can't seem to update the number of authors against a magazine e.g. if I have 1 author called "Smith, P." stored already against a magazine, I can add another called "Jones, D.", but after the post back to the Edit controller the number of authors still shows 1 - i.e. "Smith, P.H".
Please not that I have successfully model bound the number of authors back to the parent entity (Magazine), it uses a custom model binder to retrieve the authors and bind to the Magazine (I think), but it still doesn't seem to update properly.
My code for updating the model is straight forward - and shows the variable values both before and after:
public ActionResult Edit(long id)
{
MAGAZINE magazine = db.MAGAZINEs.Find(id);
return View(magazine);
}
and here are the variables pre-editing/updating -
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Edit(MAGAZINE magazine)
{
if (ModelState.IsValid)
{
db.Entry(magazine).State = EntityState.Modified;
db.SaveChanges();
return RedirectToAction("Index");
}
return View(magazine);
}
...and here are the variables after a new author has been added...
I am getting suspicious that the author entity is showing, post edit that it is not bound to any magazine and I am guessing this is why it is not being updated back to the magazine entity - but it is perplexing as I am effectively dealing with the same magazine entity - I guess it may be something to do with the custom model binder for the author.
Can anyone help on this matter?
For completeness - I have included my AuthorModelBinder class too -
public class AuthorModelBinder : IModelBinder
{
public object BindModel(ControllerContext controllerContext, ModelBindingContext bindingContext)
{
var values = bindingContext.ValueProvider.GetValue(bindingContext.ModelName);
if (values != null)
{
// We have specified asterisk (*) as a token delimiter. So
// the ids will be separated by *. For example "2*3*5"
var ids = values.AttemptedValue.Split('*');
List<int> validIds = new List<int>();
foreach (string id in ids)
{
int successInt;
if (int.TryParse(id, out successInt))
{
validIds.Add(successInt);
}
else
{
//Make a new author
AUTHOR author = new AUTHOR();
author.FULL_NAME = id.Replace("\'", "").Trim();
using (RefmanEntities db = new RefmanEntities())
{
db.AUTHORs.Add(author);
db.SaveChanges();
validIds.Add((int)author.AUTHOR_ID);
}
}
}
//Now that we have the selected ids we could fetch the corresponding
//authors from our datasource
var authors = AuthorController.GetAllAuthors().Where(x => validIds.Contains((int)x.Key)).Select(x => new AUTHOR
{
AUTHOR_ID = x.Key,
FULL_NAME = x.Value
}).ToList();
return authors;
}
return Enumerable.Empty<AUTHOR>();
}
}
I faced a very similar scenario when I developed my blog using MVC/Nhibernate and the entities are Post and Tag.
I too had an edit action something like this,
public ActionResult Edit(Post post)
{
if (ModelState.IsValid)
{
repo.EditPost(post);
...
}
...
}
But unlike you I've created a custom model binder for the Post not Tag. In the custom PostModelBinder I'm doing pretty much samething what you are doing there (but I'm not creating new Tags as you are doing for Authors). Basically I created a new Post instance populating all it's properties from the POSTed form and getting all the Tags for the ids from the database. Note that, I only fetched the Tags from the database not the Post.
I may suggest you to create a ModelBinder for the Magazine and check it out. Also it's better to use repository pattern instead of directly making the calls from controllers.

Here is the complete source code of the Post model binder

This line db.Entry(magazine).State = EntityState.Modified; only tells EF that magazine entity has changed. It says nothing about relations. If you call Attach all entities in object graph are attached in Unchanged state and you must handle each of them separately. What is even worse in case of many-to-many relation you must also handle relation itself (and changing state of relation in DbContext API is not possible).
I spent a lot of time with this problem and design in disconnected app. And there are three general approaches:
You will send additional information with your entities to find what has changed and what has been deleted (yes you need to track deleted items or relations as well). Then you will manually set state of every entity and relation in object graph.
You will just use data you have at the moment but instead of attaching them to the context you will load current magazine and every author you need and reconstruct those changes on those loaded entities.
You will not do this at all and instead use lightweight AJAX calls to add or remove every single author. I found this common for many complex UIs.
What do I want to achieve:
To show a seperate validation message for failing minimum age check and one for maximum age check
To store the minimum and maximum age in one area as integers. Not in js/ validator... only in the model. which I hope to change to look at a config file.
For the validation to work with jquery unobtrusive and server side, and to be in one place against the model (and obv some jquery)
To be enabled using data annotations
I wanted to check against DOB as a datetime, not have the user put in there age as an int. If i did I could have used [Min] notation and [Max] notation for age. It wasn't good enough.
Why didn't I use a range notation. I wanted to fire a different validation message for each min fail and max fail. I looked into this and had no look. I'd also have to pass in the range as a datetime and its static or something so I couldn't have done DateTime.Now.AddYears(-90) for instance.
My problems
I'm a noob at MVC, JQuery validation and the whole MVC architecture!
What I've come up with works. However, as you can see there is alot repeated code, I'd like to conform to DRY.
My first hack was to pass in the value that i'm checking against into the validation message. I got around this by doing...
[MaximumAgeCheck(90,"You have to be at most {0} to apply")]
and inside the validation attribute
private readonly int _min;
private readonly string _defaultErrorMessage = "";
public MinimumAgeCheck(int min, string defaultErrorMessage)
: base(defaultErrorMessage)
{
_min = min;
_defaultErrorMessage = defaultErrorMessage.Replace("{0}", _min.ToString());
}
and I used it for instance like so..
return new ValidationResult(_defaultErrorMessage);
I know this isn't the right way to do it, and wondered what is the best way to do this?
Second hack!
I'm passing in two validation parameters which I want to be able to access in the jQuery.validator.addMethod... method.
I tried to access these parameters by doing the following... params.[thevalueiadded], params[0]... etc, I even logged out params into console.log but it never showed me all the params, only the first value as a string!
My work around was to store the javascript variables at the top and load them from the adapters.add.
I'm probabily making little sense so here is the code, that works...I warn you, it is messy!

I hope this makes sense, I've read it over and its quite garbled... so i'll be happy to answer any comments.
Really useful code, but the ValidationResult IsValid method has some bugs. It doesn't handle future dates or blank dates. Plus it seems to have a hard coded limit to age 30 in - looks to be debug code? Anyway, I addressed those issues for my code and came up with the below:
protected override ValidationResult IsValid(object value, ValidationContext validationContext)
{
if (value == null)
{
return new ValidationResult(_defaultErrorMessage);
}
DateTime dtV = (DateTime)value;
long lTicks = DateTime.Now.Ticks - dtV.Ticks;
if (lTicks < 0)
{
return new ValidationResult(_defaultErrorMessage);
}
DateTime dtAge = new DateTime(lTicks);
if (!(dtAge.Year >= _min ))
{
return new ValidationResult(_defaultErrorMessage);
}
return ValidationResult.Success;
}
Take a look at the MVC Foolproof Validation library. You can find it in NuGet.
It has pretty much all the validation you need and is added via data annotations. It will intergrate nicely into the unobtrusive client side validation.
I created a custom validation with following sample JS code:
(function ($) {
$.validator.unobtrusive.adapters.add('myrule', ['minvalueproperty', 'maxvalueproperty'],
function (options) {
options.rules['myrule'] = options.params;
options.messages['currencyrule'] = options.message;
}
);
$.validator.addMethod('myrule', function (value, element, params) {
return false;
}
} (jQuery));
Server side validator code is
[AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Field | AttributeTargets.Property, AllowMultiple = false, Inherited = true)]
public class MyValidationAttribute : ValidationAttribute, IClientValidatable
{
public CurrencyValidationAttribute(string minPropertyName, string maxPropertyName)
: base (DefaultErrorMessage)
{
this.minPropertyName = minPropertyName;
this.maxPropertyName = maxPropertyName;
}
protected override ValidationResult IsValid(object value, ValidationContext validationContext)
{
return new ValidationResult(this.ErrorMessage);
}
public IEnumerable<ModelClientValidationRule> GetClientValidationRules(ModelMetadata metadata, ControllerContext context)
{
var clientValidationRule = new ModelClientValidationRule
{
ValidationType = "myrule",
ErrorMessage = this.ErrorMessage,
};
clientValidationRule.ValidationParameters["minvalueproperty"] = minPropertyName;
clientValidationRule.ValidationParameters["maxvalueproperty"] = maxPropertyName;
yield return clientValidationRule;
}
}
My model class is decorated with my custom validation attribute
[MyValidation("MinValue", "MaxValue",
ErrorMessage = "Wrong value, must be between {0} and {1}")]
public string Money { get; set; }
It appears to work for most part other than error message displaying. In my model property I have used a string with place holders to be replaced, but there is no actual code yet.
When I run the page, I entered some invalid value to the text box and forced client side validation to return false, the funny thing is that the error message I saw was
Wrong value, must be between [object Object] and {1}
Somehow {0} was replaced automatically. Any clue what is the reason the error message got replaced?
