Windows 8 Store App: Using multiple RichTextColumns in a flipview control - windows

I am trying to show two columns of rich text in two languages (side by side) inside a flip view. How Do I create two columns inside RichTextColumns and bind them to two different data source?
The flip view control looks like this:
`FlipView
x:Name="flipView"
AutomationProperties.AutomationId="ItemsFlipView"
AutomationProperties.Name="Item Details"
TabIndex="1"
Grid.RowSpan="2"
ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource itemsViewSource}}">
<FlipView.ItemContainerStyle>
<Style TargetType="FlipViewItem">
<Setter Property="Margin" Value="0,137,0,0"/>
</Style>
</FlipView.ItemContainerStyle>
<FlipView.ItemTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<!--
UserControl chosen as the templated item because it supports visual state management
Loaded/unloaded events explicitly subscribe to view state updates from the page
-->
<UserControl Loaded="StartLayoutUpdates" Unloaded="StopLayoutUpdates">
<ScrollViewer x:Name="scrollViewer" Style="{StaticResource HorizontalScrollViewerStyle}" Grid.Row="1">
<Grid>
<!-- Content is allowed to flow across as many columns as needed -->
<common:RichTextColumns x:Name="richTextColumns" Margin="117,0,117,47">

</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="richTextBlock" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Width">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="280"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="image" Storyboard.TargetProperty="MaxHeight">

</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
</Grid>
</ScrollViewer>
</UserControl>
</DataTemplate>
</FlipView.ItemTemplate>
</FlipView>`

If the columns are going to be displaying two separate pieces of information, can you not jus make two separate richtextcolumns, have them inside grids, which are then inside the flipview. That way you can bind the each RichTextColumn to the source that you want.

Xamarin.Forms UWP - How to hide or change color of Picker / ComboBox dropdown arrow

I'm working on a Xamarin.Forms project for UWP right now, and I'm using a custom renderer for Pickers. I'm actually overlaying the Picker on top of a label and icon so that when the user clicks the label/icon, it opens the picker. In order to accomplish this, I'm basically setting everything on the picker to transparent - the border, text, and background. The picker still functions just fine, and all picker elements are invisible, except the picker arrow is still visible. How do I affect the color of the picker arrow (in order to make it transparent), or just get rid of it altogether?
Getting rid of the text and background color is as easy as:
var transparent = Windows.UI.Color.FromArgb(0, 0, 0, 0);
Control.Foreground = new SolidColorBrush(transparent);
Control.Background = new SolidColorBrush(transparent);
But I can't figure out how to affect the dropdown arrow.
I know the Control is a FormsComboBox VisualElementRender<Picker, FormsComboBox>.Control, and I've tried scanning through all the properties of Control in Visual Studio.
For custom render, the correspondent native control of Picker is ComboBox in UWP . See Renderer Base Classes and Native Controls. So that for the drop down arrow you want to change , which is actually the DropDownGlyph element inside the control template of Combobox. You could copy the default ComboBox styles and templates and update the DropDownGlyph to not visible by setting the Visibility property to Collapsed. For example:
The render:
public class MyPickerRenderer : PickerRenderer
{
protected override void OnElementChanged(ElementChangedEventArgs<Picker> e)
{
base.OnElementChanged(e);
Control.Style=(Windows.UI.Xaml.Style)App.Current.Resources["pickerstyle"];
}
}
The style in App.xaml

how to set drop-down-list offset in ComboBox to be like the old-school style (win store app)

I want the combobox's drop-down-list to be opened right from the offset of the combobox's contentPresenter (you know... the part that shows the selected item). But hat actually happens is that the dropdown-list's offset is above the contentPresenter till the page's ceiling.
As well I want the width of the drop down list to be according the largest item - permanently, and not to be changed dynamically as it now (now, it resized according to the items that are in view).
I tried to set the comboBox's MaxDropDownHeight property to 0 or 300, but nothing has changed.
Here is the templateControl (the image has nothing to do with this snippet):
<Style TargetType="ComboBox" >
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="8,0" />
<Setter Property="FlowDirection" Value="LeftToRight" />
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource ComboBoxForegroundThemeBrush}" />

Thanks!
To size the ComboBox's faceplate to the largest item, set an explicit value for ComboBox.Width (or ComboBox.MinWidth to set a minimum but allow it to grow for larger items). This works if you know the length of the longest item ahead of time.
ComboBox's CarouselPanel inherits from VirtualizingPanel, so since the items can be virtualized it's difficult to determine how long the longest one will be. Setting explicit Width is probably the best way here if it works for you.
As for the ComboBox Popup's placement, the positioning logic is implementation detail that is not exposed through API as far as I know. The ComboBox design follows Win8 design guidelines for ComboBox, which are considerate of touch, mouse, and keyboard users. Users have expectations about how ComboBox will open, so it's best to follow guidelines here if possible. If you do need to achive the custom behavior described above, you may be able to hack the ComboBox control to do it or create a custom solution.
You can try and change the items panel of the combobox from carouselpanel to stackpanel in the style. That way the virtualization problem and combobox opening on both sides problems might be solved.
(cant check it myself right now)

Change Button Image On Hover or Click

How do I change the background image of a Button on Hover and on Click? The Visual Studio's UI does not seem to provide any easy way of doing it. Currently the default behavior seems to replace my image with a solid color, which looks aweful.
All I have so far is the Button base:
<Button Content="" Height="75" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="75" HorizontalAlignment="Center" ClickMode="Press">
<Button.Background>
<ImageBrush ImageSource="../data/images/icons/skill_icon_0.png"/>
</Button.Background>
</Button>
I tried to handle events and manually set it, but it doesn't work for Pressed/Released:
Button skillButton = new Button();
skillButton.Width = 75;
skillButton.Height = 75;
skillButton.ClickMode = ClickMode.Press;
skillButton.Background = GetIconImage(iconIndex, 0);
skillButton.PointerEntered +=
(object sender, Windows.UI.Xaml.Input.PointerEventArgs e) => {
skillButton.Background = GetIconImage(iconIndex, 1);
};
skillButton.PointerExited +=
(object sender, Windows.UI.Xaml.Input.PointerEventArgs e) => {
skillButton.Background = GetIconImage(iconIndex, 0);
};
skillButton.PointerPressed +=
(object sender, Windows.UI.Xaml.Input.PointerEventArgs e) => {
skillButton.Background = GetIconImage(iconIndex, 2);
};
skillButton.PointerReleased +=
(object sender, Windows.UI.Xaml.Input.PointerEventArgs e) => {
if (skillButton.FocusState == FocusState.Pointer)
skillButton.Background = GetIconImage(iconIndex, 1);
else skillButton.Background = GetIconImage(iconIndex, 0);
};
I ended up editing the ControlTemplate just to create and change the Border. But it could be used to change the image too.

</ControlTemplate>
</Button.Template>
</Button>
You're pretty much there. You can always apply a semi-transparent colour on top of your picture below your text/content but since you asked for changing the entire image, here's what you can do:
In Visual Studio 2012, if you already have a button mostly styled/configured to what you want, right click it, Edit Template -> Edit a Copy. Choose where you want to put the new style/template. It's like picking where to put the CSS. Could be in a global file (App.xaml or StandardStyle.xaml) or in the header (page resources) or inline (control resources).
The below XAML might be over-simplified and not work but it's the idea of it:
<ControlTemplate x:Key="MyButton" TargetType="Button">
<Grid>
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal" />
<VisualState x:Name="PointerOver">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="HoverBackground"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="Visibility">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Visible" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="PressedBackground"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="Visibility">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Visible" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
[...]
</VisualStateGroup>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="FocusStates">
[...]
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border x:Name="Border" [...]>
<Grid>
<Image Source="[...]" Stretch="None" />
<Image x:Name="HoverBackground" Source="[...]" Visibility="Collapsed" />
<Image x:Name="PressedBackground" Source="[...]" Visibility="Collapsed" />
<ContentPresenter x:Name="ContentPresenter"
Content="{TemplateBinding Content}"
ContentTransitions="{TemplateBinding ContentTransitions}"
ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}"
Margin="{TemplateBinding Padding}"
HorizontalAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}"
VerticalAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}"
[...]/>
</Grid>
</Border>
[...]
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
Now you can place your 3 images in the 3 <Image> tags and since the ContentPresenter is on top, when you use the template with <Button Template="{StaticResource MyButton}">, you can still put content in and it will appear on top of your background image. Or you can just have a fully graphical button with the images too.
The windows UI XAML toolkit now has this functionality:
Image Button and Toggle Image Button
Use package manager console command "Install-Package winrtxamltoolkit" in visual studio 2012 to install the toolkit... It is really useful for many things.
Here is a style that turns visibility on and off for some extra images you add in Blend. The images are transparent and go behind the button background image by using "Send to Back" .. so in other words, you get to keep using a different background image brush for each button, plus the swapped Normal, Pointer, and Pressed images. So two background images overlaid.

Use this Code in Pointer_Entered Event on the Button and it will work :)
private void Button_PointerEntered_1(object sender, PointerEventArgs e)
{
BitmapImage bmp = new BitmapImage();
Uri u = new Uri("ms-appx:/Images/Shapes/blueball.png", UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute);
bmp.UriSource = u;
ImageBrush i = new ImageBrush();
i.ImageSource=bmp;
button.Background= i;
}
The reason the += for PointerPressed / PointerReleased won't work in your original code is because Button (actually ButtonBase) class-handles these events. That is because they're being consolidated into the Click event (on Release). If you used skillButton.AddHandler with first param PointerPressedEvent, second param a new handler reference to a named handler, and third param true, you could be using PointerPressed rather than the Entered/Exited as the event.

How can I get stop the button control in Windows Phone from making that ugly white flash when clicked?

So I have a few items in a list that I display on my MainPage. I have a button that looks like this:
<Button Grid.Column="1" Click="Button_Click" BorderThickness="0" Height="40">
<Button.Background>
<ImageBrush ImageSource="/WindowsPhonePanoramaApplication2;component/Images/appbar.feature.email.rest.png" Stretch="None" />
</Button.Background>
</Button>
Every time I click on it, the image disappears under this bright white rectangle. I'd rather have it display another image instead. How can I achieve this?
Thanks for looking
You need to change the button template. You can find the template within the file here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Design\System.Windows.xaml
The ButtonBase template is as follows:
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="ButtonBase">
<Grid Background="Transparent">
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="MouseOver"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBackgroundBrush}" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground" Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Disabled">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneDisabledBrush}" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground" Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneDisabledBrush}" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Transparent" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border x:Name="ButtonBackground" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" CornerRadius="0" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" Margin="{StaticResource PhoneTouchTargetOverhang}" >
<ContentControl x:Name="ContentContainer" Foreground="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" HorizontalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" VerticalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" Content="{TemplateBinding Content}" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}"/>
</Border>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
Note how the Pressed VisualState changes the background of the ButtonBackground element (i.e. the Border) to PhoneForegroundBrush. This is what makes your button turn white.
You can create your own button template, changing the image within the Pressed state. Search the web if you are not sure how to create your own control template.
To do this you'll need to retemplate the button to use a different visual state when clicked.

This Question is a year old. However, here is the perfect way to achieve what you want. I see that you want to simulate the same experience similar when you press the appbar icon.
The Coding4fun toolkit has the exact ailment you need.
Here is how the code would look like,
<c4fControls:RoundButton Grid.Column="1" Click="Button_Click"
ImageSource="/Myapp;component/Images/appbar.img.png"/>
Ofcourse, you would have to include the coding4fun library to your project. Add this line to the top of the page as well.
xmlns:c4fControls="clr-namespace:Coding4Fun.Phone.Controls;assembly=Coding4Fun.Phone.Controls"

Windows Phone 7 (WP7) Change a button's background color on click

This seems like a really, really simple problem, but I can't figure it out. The culprit appears to be WP7's default style. It changes the background color to white when a button is clicked, then back to the button's default background.
The problem I have is I want to change the button's background when the button is clicked. I can't find any possible way to do this.
I've tried setting the background in code, but that does nothing. I think it's being overwritten by the default style.
I've tried using a Property Change behavior in Blend, but that has the exact same result.
I've tried creating a new visual state for the button and setting that on click, but that's a little buggy and has a large overhead for the number of buttons I'm dealing with. Also, it didn't work.
I can set other buttons' background on a click event, just not the button being clicked.
This is such an annoying roadblock! I'm sure this is a one line of code kind of answer. :)
What you need to do is create a button template that modifies the Pressed visual state.
In blend, select your button, click the menu item "Object"->"Edit Template"->"Edit a Copy..." and a new template is created. In the States window, select the Pressed visual state in the CommonStates visual state group. Now select ButtonBackground in the object hierarchy and edit the background brush in the Properties window.
I edited the Pressed state's background to be a solid Cyan-ish color and ended up with something like this XAML.
<phone:PhoneApplicationPage ...>
<phone:PhoneApplicationPage.Resources>
<Style x:Key="ButtonStyle1" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
<Grid Background="Transparent">

<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="MouseOver"/>

<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBackgroundBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ColorAnimation Duration="0" To="Cyan" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(Border.Background).(SolidColorBrush.Color)" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground" d:IsOptimized="True"/>

</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border x:Name="ButtonBackground" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" CornerRadius="0" Margin="{StaticResource PhoneTouchTargetOverhang}" Background="Black">
<ContentControl x:Name="ContentContainer" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}" Content="{TemplateBinding Content}" Foreground="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" HorizontalAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" VerticalAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}"/>
</Border>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
</phone:PhoneApplicationPage.Resources>
<Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Transparent">
<Button Content="Button" Style="{StaticResource ButtonStyle1}"/>
</Grid>
</phone:PhoneApplicationPage>
I think getting a reference to the actual background, then changing that might help. Here's a method that will take an instance a button.
private void HighlightButton(Button btnToHighlight)
{
SolidColorBrush sBrush = (SolidColorBrush)btnToHighlight.Background;
sBrush.Color = //enter your colour here
btnToHighlight.Background = sBrush;
}
<ControlTemplate x:Key="ButtonNextOver" TargetType="Button">
<Grid>
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="MouseOver">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames BeginTime="00:00:00" Duration="00:00:00" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background" Storyboard.TargetName="hoverbutton">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="00:00:00">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
<ImageBrush ImageSource="/NhomMua;component/Image/ico_next_over.png"/>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame.Value>
</DiscreteObjectKeyFrame>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="FocusStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Focused"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Unfocused"/>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border x:Name="hoverbutton">
<Border.Background>
<ImageBrush ImageSource="/NhomMua;component/Image/ico_next.png"/>
</Border.Background>
</Border>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
To change the button background when the button is pressed, I use the templates. As Matt has pointed out, open the project in Blend. Go to the button > Right Click > Edit Template > Edit a copy. A new template for your button would be created and appended at the near beginning of your XAML page.
Now since you need to change the buttons behavior when the button is pressed, you need to change the VisualState. Head over to the "Pressed" visual state and peer into it. This is the "Pressed" visual state.
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBackgroundBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground" Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="#FF373737" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
Change the value of #FF373737 to anything you desire. You are now set.
