I have a problem with the Visual Studio IDE where in my Tools >> Options >> HTML Designer, the Split Views Vertically is unchecked, yet the IDE decides to still keep the aspx page and source code split vertically. Anyone know how I can fix this? Must be a registry key somewhere that I can delete.
I've tried resetting the Window Layout by going to Window >> Reset Window Layout, and also trying Tools >> Import/Export Settings >> Reset All Settings.
The current settings is NOT checked, which means the windows should split horizontally (the default settings). This problem exists and occurred the same way for my Visual Studio 2010 installation, and now exists for my Visual Studio 2012 installation. Both IDE settings are not set to vertically split, but yet still split vertically.
I hope this isn't too confusing. Any ideas?

I am evaluating Visual Studio 2012 and am having some problems with the color schema.
Sure enough I was able to overcome the initial discomfort by setting my color for the text editor.
One thing I have not been able to set corrent are the color for the class names.
Say you have a line like below.
Class name = new Class();
the entire line is in the same color, expect the new keyword.
I want the word 'Class' to be in a different color like in earlier versions of Visual Studio.
I am not able to set the color for this from the Option.
I have tried chaning color for all fields like plain text, literals, identifier, etc under
Tool -> Option -> Environment -> Font & Colors
but still I am not able to fix this.
I have also applied custome themes, those are also not helping.
I wouldn't want to install a productivity power tool for such basic preference right ??

The solution I found is a combination of the suggestions found in a mish mash of related threads:
Close Visual Studio and open the VS command prompt as an administrator. Navigate to the devenv.exe file (in Express versions it is titled something along the lines of *express.exe) usually located in C://Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0/Common7/IDE.
Type devenv.exe /setup
Reopen Visual Studio. If everything is all colored now, great! If not, close the tabs and reopen them.
Performing all of step 3 is what has got my coloring to come back to normal.

If you're using Productive Power Tools, go to => Tools -> Options -> Productive Power Tools. In main menu, TURN OFF the option: Colorized Parameter Help.
I solved my problem, I'm on Windows 8 Pro, Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate.
You're on the right track. Under Tools -> Options -> Environment -> Fonts and Colors, you want to change "User Types", first making sure at the top of the dialog that you are viewing the settings for the "Text Editor"
Although, by default with my install of Visual Studio 2012 these were already set, so you may want to try the "Use Defaults" button, unless you've made other changes that you want to keep.

The workaround provided by Donatas on Microsoft Connect works without having to turn off any option of Productivity Power Tools:
There is a workaround without turning off "Colorized Parameter Help".
Go to Tools > Options > Environment > Fonts and Colors in Display
items select "User Types (Value types)" click Custom next to Item
foreground color and in the color picker change Red, Green or Blue by
1, i.e. to make a custom color which basically looks the same. OK on
all the dialogs and problem solved.
In Visual Studio, you are able to dock code windows in horizontal and vertical tab groups (something you can also do with tool windows).
However, when doing so you may end up with a lot of redundant screen space. What would be ideal would be if you could mix docking orientations for code windows. This is possible with tool windows in Visual Studio 2010. Here is an image showing the feature used for tool windows:
My question is: is it possible to get this same functionality with the code windows - i.e. being able to mix horizontal and vertical docking, like with the tool windows shown? I've heard rumours that its possible, but I've been unable to find any truth in that.
I too wish this was a naitive feature in visual studio, but there is one workaround by using the 'floating tab group' feature of visual studio
Move the visual studio main window out of the way (maybe to another monitor, or to smallest area of the monitor needed to see the tooling windows)
"Tear out" or Right Click > Float on the desired tab
Position the tab to your desire (I suggest using WinSplitRevolution, via codinghorror)
Repeat, note that you can move a tab to an existing 'floating' tab group
And voila!
There are some setbacks, some commands will pop up over the main tooling window instead of your current tab group etc. but its still pretty nice. I'm not sure if there's any changes coming in VS2012, but I haven't heard about anything related.
Picture says it all, it should currently be showing a file but as you can see its having issues drawing the content of the file.
I have unloaded all addons and restart visual studio.
If it mathers the previus project was a VS 2k8.

If i wait a good 5min ( I have a Quad core I7 with 6gb ram, 295gtx. VS is running from a SSD).
It will load the text, but im unable to "edit", as it will have loaded some document (.cs ) but when i select the one i want to edit it not realy open that file.
It can best be described as visual studio having a 5min lag.
I had this precise bug. I would open files from the solution explorer but the editor window would either not appear, only 1-2 lines of 100+ line files would display, or the file would display but I could not scroll or otherwise edit the file. Some parts of VS were working, i.e. little tooltips would appear if I moused over the right part of the (invisible) text but I obviously couldn't do much in this state.
I have a lot of VS stuff installed so I thought it was some sort of plugin or extension that was causing things to go screwy. These installed items include:

I solved it (2/18/2011) by Tools... Extension Manager... disabling the Productivity Power Tools and Snippet Designer. No idea what was going on but this fixed it for me and I was back to work. Probably something in the system drawing and/or display options.

The issue continues. Unfortunately it is intermittent and I have not be able to reproduce it reliably. Now the suspects are the BugShooting and CaptureWiz screen capture tools. I've had the behavior show up and then disappear in and around the time of logging bugs with them.
2nd EDIT
The issue continually continues. I have not yet been able to determine the cause but usually quitting VS and restarting resolves the issue(s). Other parts of the behavior includes the menu options (File, Edit, View, etc.) not operating properly as they show only the highlight but not the actual menu items. The solution will build and run just fine, but things still won't show up properly.
I had a similar issue whereby VS2012 was telling me that I had active (open) files, but the text editor was not displaying them. Clicking on the file(s) in the solution explorer seemingly did nothing. Alt + Tab just cycled through the open files, but still, nothing rendered on screen.
I solved it by clicking on the "WINDOW" menu item and then"Close All Documents". Visual Studio then behaved as expected and opened (and rendered) the files correctly.
This bug was created by mumble 1.2.x, but is fixed in the snapshot versions of 1.3.x. YOu can likely get simular bugs by other software that does DirectX overlay.
I had the same issue in Visual Studio 2012. It was fixed by running a repair of Visual Studio 2012 via Add/ Remove Programs.
The following had no effect:
Closing and reopening a solution
Opening different file types
Restarting Visual Studio
Adding and removing plugins
Resetting options via the 'Reset all Settings' option in Visual Studio's 'Import and Export Settings'
Rebooting windows
I had this problem in Visual Studio 2013. Problem was: extension "Regex Tester". I had to uninstall this extension.
I don't want to change the entire background color of solution explorer in VS, only the selected file.

Check out Tools > Options > Projects and Solutions, and then check off "Track Active Item in Solution Explorer". This will make whichever file you're viewing/editing inside of Visual Studio automatically be selected in Solution Explorer and if your Windows color scheme is set up properly, it will in fact be darker.
This option used to be on by default in 2003 and maybe 2005, but 2008 has it disabled by default now... I personally prefer it turned on.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors\ButtonFace is the registry key that sets the background color of the current file in solution explorer when solution explorer has not focus, this is what I found for Vs2010 and windows 7 - could not seem to find interface to modify the button face color in the gui. many things use this color, so I set just dark enough to see.
I have no idea why you want to do that in the first place, curious :)
Anyway, I doubt you can change the entire UI's background color depending on the type of file /editor mode.

I've just started up visual studio express 2008 for the first time in 6 months, and the when I expand the properties window, all the name/values are rendered as squares. Event the ellipses (...) are squares! The weird thing is, all other text is OK, the code, toolbar, menus etc.
What font/character set does visual studio use for this text? and why is only the propert window affected?
That's fairly odd. I haven't seen a bug like that yet.
If it is a font issue, you can fix it by resetting all of your settings. Go to Tools -> Import / Export Settings. Reset all settings and pick your profile. Rebuild and Restart Visual Studio and see if the problem goes away.
My second guess would be to check the file encoding. Visual Studio should work fine with most file encodings but it's not bad to sanity check. Click on File -> Save As and set the text type to be ASCII. Then restart Visual Studio and see if the problem goes away.
