What is the best practice for handling users workflow and action path?
I was wondering how I should handle my concurrent users in Jmeter and what would be the best way. The main question is, if the example shown below considered to be good for performance testing? If not, what would be a better way?
My test:
CSV data config (list of users and passwords)
Thread group (30 users)
Once Only Controller
Login
IF Controller (action 1) - Checks if username from CSV file matches
LOOP Controller
load page
do action
finish action
IF Controller (action 2) - Checks if username from CSV file matches
LOOP Controller
load page
do action
finish action
Pretty much if controllers check if username matches, do the action else keep going until the next match. The reason for that is to isolate specific users ONLY to do a specific action.
After many different experiences and test cases, I realized for functional/regression testing it's ok to use IF statements, but for load testing, it is better if you use single login with many privileges of those users.
This is the way I ended up finishing that test case

I am loading a csv file with usernames and passwords of users.
Each user belongs to a certain group eg. Group1_user1, Group1_user2,.... Group7_user1, Group7_user2 etc.
I have recorded with my Script Recorder in JMeter the HTTP requests for log in of all the users and then the steps of a HTML stepper process.
Only one group has the permission to complete a step.. there is an hierachy in the groups.
So, my question is.. since I am loading all the users, how am I going to test each step for the users who belong only to the right group?
I cant use plug-in and I cant break my Test Plan into smaller Test Plans.
Normally you should be using different Thread Groups for representing different groups of logical users, so I would suggest moving at least those guys who have permission to complete a step into a separate thread group.
You can implement synchronization and passing data between thread groups if needed using Inter-Thread Communication Plugin
If you have to stay with the single Thread Group you can use If Controller or Switch Controller to conditionally decide which step can be taken by which user.
For example if you use the following __jexl3() function as the If Controller's condition:
${__jexl3("${username}".contains("Group1"),)}
then If Controllers child(ren) will be executed only if ${username} variable will contain Group1

Currently, I am recording a script in jmeter by which I am adding a record in a website , but a problem is that while recording a script I am able to add a record in a website, but once recording has been done and after that if I will run a script again then, a script is not adding a record in a website.
can you please help me with this?
In the absolute majority of cases you will not be able to replay the recorded script without performing correlation.
Modern web applications widely use dynamic parameters for session management or CSRF protection so once you record your test you get "hardcoded" values and they need to be dynamic.
Assuming all above my expectation is that your test doesn't add record due to failed login or something like that. Inspect requests and responses using View Results Tree listener - this will allow you to identify which exact step is failing.
The process of implementing the correlation looks as follows:
Identify the element which looks to be dynamic either manually inspecting request parameters and look for "suspicious" patterns or record your test one more time and compare the recorded scripts looking for the parameters which differ
Inspect previous response and extract the dynamic value using a suitable post-processor. For HTML response times the best option is CSS Selector Extractor. It will allow you to extract the dynamic parameter value and store in into a JMeter Variable
Replace hardcoded recorded value with the variable from the step 2
Repeat for all dynamic parameters
Don't forget to add HTTP Cookie Manager to your Test Plan.
I have recorded my web application through template & just to confirm that load test result which i am getting is correct? Just by increasing No of users does it give proper results? Is it enough for load testing of web application?
First of all you need to ensure that your test does what it is supposed to be doing. Recorded tests can rarely be successfully replayed, so normally you should be acting as follows:
Add View Results Tree listener and run your test with 1 user. Inspect request and response details to verify your test steps.
Perform correlation and parametrization if required.
Correlation: the process of identifying and handling any dynamic parameters. Most often people use Regular Expression Extractor for it.
Parametrization: the process of making your test data driven. For example, if your application assumes multiple authenticated users you need to store the credentials somewhere. Most commonly used test element for this is CSV Data Set Config
Make your test realistic. Virtual users simulated by JMeter need to represent real users using real browsers as close as possible with all the related stuff: cookies, headers, cache, etc. See How To Make JMeter Behave More Like A Real Browser to learn how to configure JMeter to act closer to real users. Also real users need some time to "think" between operations so make sure you are using Timers to simulate this behaviour as well.
Only after you apply the above points you should add more virtual users. Again, run your test with 2-3 users and iterations to ensure your test funcitons as designed. Once you are happy with it you can increase the load, but don't overkill your server, increase the load gradually and check the impact of the increasing load on your application, i.e. how response time, throughput and number of errors change as you increase the load. The same is applicable for decreasing the load, don't turn it off at once, decrease the number of virtual users gradually.

So using Jmeter today and whilst I know i can load test a website with concurrent users using threads, loops etc I was wondering if it is possible to setup a test where say 50 users access the website and then each of them browse the site in a different way?
Has anyone done this before or would jmeter not be the tool to use?
Looking for some suggestions or an idea how to do it in Jmeter.
Suppose you have at least the following simple possibility:Random Order Controller.
Implement set of navigation/browsing steps via separate samplers or group of samplers (grouped via e.g. Simple Controller or Transaction Controller - if some steps should be always executed in defined sequence).
This will be "pool" of navigation steps.
Adding all these steps as child samplers to the Random Order Controller let you have different, per user, randomly generated sequence of navigation steps.
In this case you possible have to put your login/logout samplers (if any) out from Random Order Controller. As well you can e.g. use both scenarios with and without login/logout, etc.
Thread Group
...
Login Sampler
Random Order Controller
Sampler A
Sampler B
...
Sampler X
Logout Sampler
...
As well you can also additionally look onto
Random Controller
Switch Controller: e.g. define in csv-file per-user navigation scenarios, read these scenarios during script execution and assign extracted actions to each thread;
Include Controller.
I am trying to simulate a sequential call to couple of webservices by putting them under Interleave controller. Although I have unchecked "ignore sub-controller blocks", jmeter still runs only one of the controllers living under interleave controller and alternates it for each iteration. What I need is a sequential call to all .
Any help is appreciated. Cheers
The Interleave Controller is running as it should do. It will alternate through one web service for each iteration
If you want a Sequential call to both web services on each request, then just put them directly under the Thread Group - without any logic controller or keep a Simple Controller
Unless I'm misunderstanding your question, why do you need the Interleave Controller?
Jose
Thanks for the answer. Keeping them directly under thread group did not call them sequentially. You can try it. I currently have about 10 webservices (let us call them 1..10) some are heavy and some are light there by resulting in different response times. However, I would like to run these in order that is from 1 to 10.
Directly placing them under thread group did not call them sequentially, so I used interleave controller with "ignore sub-controller blocks" unchecked.
