Hey guys I am using three.js and have tried to rotate this plane below but to avail. Any idea how to do it please? Below is the code which renders the plane using three.js. How can I rotate it, please?. Thanks!

var objects = [];

info.style.width = '100%';
info.style.textAlign = 'center';
info.innerHTML = 'three.js - voxel painter<br><strong>click</strong>: add voxel, <strong>shift + click</strong>: remove voxel, save .png';
container.appendChild( info );
camera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera( 40, window.innerWidth / window.innerHeight, 1, 10000 );

Look at the Plane here
I recommend to use THREE.OrbitControls.
Add orbit control:
orbitControls = new THREE.OrbitControls(camera);
And animate your scene continuously:
function render() {
renderer.render( scene, camera );
requestAnimationFrame(render);
}
Further you have to manage how THREE.OrbitControls and the mouse event (onDocumentMouseDown) interact together.
A possibility would be to handle only the left mouse button in onDocumentMouseDown:
function onDocumentMouseDown( event ) {
if ( event.button != 0 ) // 0 means left mouse button
return;
And to rotate the scene by the right mouse button. This can be done by setting the .mouseButtons property of OrbitControls:
orbitControls.mouseButtons = {
LEFT: THREE.MOUSE.RIGHT,
MIDDLE: THREE.MOUSE.MIDDLE,
RIGHT: THREE.MOUSE.LEFT
}
Further note, that you can enable or disable pane, zoom and rotate by setting .enablePan, .enableZoom respectively .enableRotate.
See the following example, where the boxes are positioned by the left mouse button and the scene can be rotated by holding the right mouse button:
var container;
var camera, scene, renderer;
var plane;
var mouse, raycaster, isShiftDown = false;
var cubeGeometry = new THREE.BoxBufferGeometry( 50, 50, 50 );
var cubeMaterial = new THREE.MeshLambertMaterial( { color: 0x00ff80, overdraw: 0.5 } );
var objects = [];

render();
function init() {
container = document.createElement( 'div' );
document.body.appendChild( container );
camera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera( 40, window.innerWidth / window.innerHeight, 1, 10000 );
camera.position.set( 500, 800, 1300 );
camera.lookAt( 0, 0, 0 );
scene = new THREE.Scene();
scene.background = new THREE.Color( 0xf0f0f0 );
var gridHelper = new THREE.GridHelper( 1000, 20 );
scene.add( gridHelper );
raycaster = new THREE.Raycaster();
mouse = new THREE.Vector2();
//PlaneBufferGeometry: platform to lay cubes
var geometry = new THREE.PlaneBufferGeometry( 10000, 10000 );
geometry.rotateX( - Math.PI / 2 );
plane = new THREE.Mesh( geometry, new THREE.MeshBasicMaterial( { visible: false } ) );
scene.add( plane );
objects.push( plane );
// Lights
var ambientLight = new THREE.AmbientLight( 0x606060 );
scene.add( ambientLight );
var directionalLight = new THREE.DirectionalLight( 0xffffff );
directionalLight.position.x = Math.random() - 0.5;
directionalLight.position.y = Math.random() - 0.5;
directionalLight.position.z = Math.random() - 0.5;
directionalLight.position.normalize();
scene.add( directionalLight );
var directionalLight = new THREE.DirectionalLight( 0x808080 );
directionalLight.position.x = Math.random() - 0.5;

When rotating an Object, I think there are two ways[focus on rotate the object, not use camera]:
1.rotate the object directly in render(), just like(canvas_geometry_cube.html)
cube.rotation.y += ( targetRotationY - cube.rotation.y ) * 0.05;
cube.rotation.x += ( targetRotationY - cube.rotation.x ) * 0.05;
However, here has a problem, when you rotate in some angle, it not works.

2.So I try another way, to save the rotation Matrix about the mouse move(refer to the links in https://github.com/mrdoob/three.js/issues/1230).
var newRotationMatrix = new THREE.Matrix4();
newRotationMatrix.identity();
var axisy = new THREE.Vector3(0,1,0);
var axisx = new THREE.Vector3(1,0,0);
var deltaX = newX - lastMouseX;
newRotationMatrix.makeRotationAxis(axisy.normalize(), THREE.Math.degToRad(deltaX / 10));
rotationMatrix.multiply(newRotationMatrix);
var deltaY = newY - lastMouseY;
newRotationMatrix.makeRotationAxis(axisx.normalize(), THREE.Math.degToRad(deltaY / 10));
rotationMatrix.multiply(newRotationMatrix);
and when in the render() I use:
cube.rotation.setRotationFromMatrix(rotationMatrix);
But it does not work.
Can you help me, thank you!

Rotation solved
Sorry for my poor english.
Object could set rotation from quaternion. So First I get the quaternion from the mouse move.(trackball modify from the control trackball) And then apply to the object.

I've taken the code from #yongnan and modified it to work as I would have expected the cube to rotate while dragging. You can download the code here: https://github.com/defmech/Three.js-Object-Rotation-with-Quaternion
Example here: http://projects.defmech.com/ThreeJSObjectRotationWithQuaternion/
Add the answer, so that, it would help for the other people who has the similar problem

I realise this is an old post - but for people happening on it & just in case anyone is interested: I've put together a first version of a drag controller which enables drag rotation about 3 axes, with the axis of rotation specified by the mouse pointer rather than the center of the object.
It works with touch, and should behave the same irrespective of camera position/object position. I've also had it working alongside OrbitControls.js, so that the whole scene rotates/translates if blank canvas is clicked on.
You can read more about it and get the code here: https://virtual.blue/point-drag-controls
I'm trying to load obj model.
Why does a strange boundary artifact appear on surface?
What I'm doing wrong? I'm creating the obj model using 3D Scanner.
Thank you.

My code below.
When I uncomment
object.rotation.y += ( targetRotation - object.rotation.y ) * 0.05; from render() or animate() function I get "Uncaught ReferenceError: object is not defined " error.
I tried anything, my animate() function is even in loader callback, I tried changing three.js to older version (currently using r59), hoped var object = event.content; might solve it, no effect.
I want to add "click and move your mouse to rotate model" usability, I have no problems with that when its cube.
but it just won't work with my *obj.
Help? =)

It is because "object" is a local variable in your callback function. Decare it globally:
var object;
Then in your callback,
object = event.content;
three.js r.59
I am attempting to rotate an object I uploaded along its y axis. The object uploads and the material is applied. I have used the same code to rotate a sphere but it does not seem to work with a custom object. If I un-comment the line at the bottom that is supposed to handle the actual rotation, the image no longer shows up as if there is an error.

The problem is that you use the variable "object" in the animate function before it is initialized. Also the variable "object" has a scope limited to the callback function of the loader.
You might want to read something about javascript variable scope.
http://www.mredkj.com/tutorials/reference_js_intro_ex.html
To solve your problem you might to change a few things.
1) Make the variable "object" global
// Make object a global variable
var camera, scene, renderer, object;
2) Do not call the animate function before the object is initialized
init();
//animate();
3) Do not use "var" inside callback function of the loader
var loader = new THREE.OBJLoader();
loader.addEventListener( 'load', function ( event ) {
//var object = event.content;
object = event.content;
var geom = new THREE.SphereGeometry( 100, 50, 50 );
4) Call "animate" after "object" is initialized
object.position.y = 150;
scene.add( object );
// Call animate after object is loaded and added to the scene
animate();
5) Good luck ;)
