Xcode 4.6.2 error: "cannot run on the selected destination" - xcode

I've been having this problem for a couple weeks now. All of a sudden this happened to my project and I havent been able to fix it. Its a basic tab-bar app and i've barely even started heavy coding on it. Running xcode 4.6.2 (tried on 4.6 and 4.6.1 also).
The actual error says:
"Cannot run on the selected destination
The selected destination does not support the architecture for which the selected software is built. Switch to a destination that supports that architecture in order to run the selected software."
Thanks in advance.

Well here's my new fix: I had (for some reason) changed the highlighted line below:
I had changed the ${EXECUTABLE_NAME} to something else. Changing it back did not fix the issue immediately: I had to first click the + to add a new row then delete the new row.
My app runs fine now
OLD FIX:
OK, so yes, it's true, there are other questions like this one. They helped me figure out a different (and stranger) solution.
I right-clicked on my .xcodeproj file and chose "Show Package Contents"
I then opened "project.pbxproj"
I copied all the text from it to another file, deleted all the text from it and saved
This "crashed" my XCode Project that I had accidentally left open in XCode.
I closed my project, then pasted the original contents of "project.pbxproj" back into "project.pbxproj"
I saved "project.pbxproj" and closed it
After opening my XCode Project again, I was able to run it on my device!
To me, it doesn't make sense why this worked because I didn't modify an files... But it did, so hurrah!
PS
Back up your project beforehand, just in case.
EDIT: Well mine has stopped working again and I can't use the above method to fix it...

Xcode source control won't commit

Problem:
When I hit "Commit..." under the Source Control menu in Xcode, the window comes up blank and I get a colorful pinwheel that doesn't stop spinning, so I have to force quit Xcode.
Details:
It's not a problem with Xcode in general because I can still commit other projects.
The version editor still works (I can still see previous commits I've made).
I've let the pinwheel run for over an hour, and still nothing happens.
I was able to commit this project up until a couple months ago. Since then, I added a few files to it, edited it a bit, updated Xcode if I remember right, and updated macOS.
Some of the files I added came from other projects.
I've tried removing some of the files I added and then committing, but that didn't work so I added them back.
I've tried cleaning the project, restarting Xcode, and restarting my mac.
I don't know much about source control, but I don't have anything fancy set up with a team or anything, it's just a local repository.
I've tried suggestions to delete various things inside the .xcodeproj file, to no avail.
I have Xcode 9.4.1
Any ideas?
If you have added big files (larger than 100mb) then sometimes Xcode has trouble with them. Try unstaging your commits and then committing them again. Finally try reverting back to the most recent version of your project and working from there.
I had the same problem. Sometimes selecting "Fetch and refresh status" works. The next time you go to commit the files will show up.
I found that rebooting my computer fixed the problem.

Xcode 8.2.1 becomes unresponsive when i click on main.Storyboard

First, there's one old question with the same issue, but since the answers don't work for me, i'm posting this one:
I had problems to open an old project at all. So i deleted xcuserdata and the derived data, from the options tab, too. This one worked fine and i was able to open the project, but now when i click on the storyboard Xcode "hangs" and i have to force it to quit.
This happens only if i click on main.Storyboard, every other file in the project works fine when i click on it.
The last thing i tried was to run the project and in the last 5 minutes, it says Compiling 2 of 2 Storyboard files and that's all; no other result at the moment.
edit: cleaning the project doesn't work too.
edit2: It seems the problem is with my Xcode, not the project. I created a new project and Xcode freeze when i try to open the storyboard. Same with some other old projects.
Next step: reinstalling the Xcode.
Ok, like i comment previously, i tried a lot of things before consider to reinstall Xcode, but the most important were to run the project in other Mac and when i saw that there was no problem to show the storyboard i concluded that the issue were in Xcode.
I reinstalled it and it works fine.
Before everyone does that it's probably a good idea to see if your project run on other mac.
You can also delete xcuserdata, the derived data and the Xcode saved state.
Among the other things i tried:
I restored the version of main.storyboard i have on time machine, just before the crash. Didn't worked, but worth to try.
I also considered to replace the file with the same but from some old version. But the problem was, that i've made too many changes on the actual storyboard, so i needed to find a way to restore it.

Xcode 4 shows no files after loading project

I've loaded a project in Xcode 4 after not looking at it for a while. Xcode shows its progress bar and indicates in text that the project is loading, and it appears to finish, but then there are no files shown in the hierarchy or flat views. There is nothing showing in any view (except for one breakpoint in the breakpoints view).
Any ideas? Xcode gives me zero indication that anything is wrong, it shows me nothing.
I just had the same issue. After a few hours scratching my head and trying all kind of things, I finally found a fix: remove the whole package 'project.xcworkspace' inside the XXXXX.xcodeproj package.
More specifically, when you find the 'XXXXX.xcodeproj' file, right-click it, and select 'Show Package Contents'. This will get you inside the package where you will find the 'package.xcworkspace' file. It is best to do this while the Xcode project is closed.
Maybe that will work for you or for others with the same issue in the future...
Some of the project views have the "Recently Changed" filter icon. For me the problem was: i had that enabled in the Project Navigator, so it was only showing the files i recently changed. It looks like this.
I'm using Xcode 6.1 though.
I had a similar issue. After archiving a project the files would disappear from the project navigator.
It turned out that somehow XCode had added the word "main" to the searchbar below the project navigator so that almost all files where invisible. Quite frustrating.
It might be the same case for you..
For those who make it here, I was opening a older version of a similar iOS project after upgrading to the latest XCode (6.2), and was seeing the symptoms labeled in this question (missing files, folders etc.)
My solution: at the bottom left of the screen, unselecting 'Show only files with source-control status" which happened to be set on (it's blue when on). The icon looks like a 4-pt star inside a square.
remove the whole package 'project.xcworkspace' inside the XXXXX.xcodeproj package. may cause to any other error so please ignore and trying finally
You can quit xcode and reload again your project it help you
This happened to me when I tried to do an alt-tab, on a VM running in TeamViewer in Windows - Click the search bar below, enter delete multiple times and the invisible search term cleared up
I had the same issue. Besides the answers above, it could also be that you have already accidentally opened the project in another Xcode window... Close that and reopen everything and it should work.

Xcode 4 code sense is not working

I am running a "old" Xcode 3 project in Xcode 4 and code sense is not working for my own classes. I have tried following:
Clean/rebuild
Remove Derived Data
Installing 4.3 documentation
Restart
Without any luck.
Sometimes the code sense works but mostly I just get "No Completions".
Try this:
Open Organizer then Project Tab.
Clear the "Derived Data". Xcode should re-index your project then and code sense should work. At least worked for me.
I know this is late, but for reference: http://sealedabstract.com/code/when-xcode-4s-code-completion-autocomplete-breaks/
Close the project, leaving XCode still running.
Open XCode’s Organizer window, go to the Projects Tab, select the correct project, and hit the Delete button next to “Derived Data”.
Quit XCode.
Navigate to your project’s .xcodeproject file in Finder. Right-click, choose “Show Package Contents.”
Leave the project.pbxproj file, but delete the project.xcworkspace file, any .pbxuser files, and the entire userdata folder.
Open the project in XCode. You will see XCode riding high on the CPU usage for around 10-60 seconds, depending on the size of your project. The activity window will say “Indexing”
When your CPU spike returns to earth, code completion will be working again.
There's a lot of deleting going on there so please be careful, but this definitely worked for me.
I've been doing this, and it's worked multiple times for me (after trying all of the above previously).
Edit: Now I just hit space, backspace (the mac version) and rebuild... works nice. Then, remember to scroll (sometimes the colors don't show up until you scroll somewhere)
Find your prefix file: "ProjectName_prefix.pch".
Comment out some line. (basically change it)
Build your project, doesn't matter if it fails or not.
Uncomment it.
Build again.
I'm betting only step 2 (modify the prefix) is what does it, but these essentially get you back to running. Suddenly everything magically recolors itself and completes functions.
Good luck if that doesn't fix it, perhaps try doing this to your dependency pch files (three20 or FB api's)
Clearing the "Derived Data" only works temporarily for me. I have to do it and then restart Xcode like 3-4 times each day to get code sense working again.
I found out the real cause is in the Target's Build Settings. I moved everything from Header Search Paths to User Header Search Paths and it is fixed. In my case, the framework I'm working with is RestKit.
BTW, I came up with this because I was adding another project (QuickDialog) into my project and I was curious that it is using User Header Search Paths, but not Header Search Paths. Here is the difference between them.
You can able to fix that issue by change build settings like this, PreCompile Prefix Headers :NO
FYI, if one file doesn't have code sense but the rest of your project does, check that its added to a target. Once I did that I got code sense back in that file.
It's been ages but the answer is just to move the code into a new folder and the code sense should be working now.
This happened when I added a new Objective-C Class and the code sense doesn't work only on the newly added .m and .h files (on XCode 4 latest update during this post).
Close all xcode windows
Delete all your projects from xcode>window>organizer and restart your project. It will now sense and index your project properly.
I wrote about it in detail here.
Basically my fix was that with localization. I upgraded from xcode 3.2.5 to xcode 4 and then screwed around with built in interface builder and turned on localization for a XIB file accidently which placed my source files in en.lproj directory. After moving them back to Classes folder it worked perfectly.
Again, for the sake of helping others with this issue which, in my case, happened upon upgrading to Xcode 4.3.
Of course I tried the solutions offered in this post, and none of them worked. But the suggestion to move the location of the project in Finder brought back some Code Sense, but the suggestions didn't make any sense.
I ended up deleting my project and re-cloned it from the git repository. That brougt back Code Sense for me...
I open a second project in the background whenever my Xcode's code sensing stops working (it usually works the first time i open the project but after a while code sense no longer works). So what i do is to open a second project in Xcode. Xcode will start indexing the second project and magically the code sense for my main project is back.
Running Xcode 4.3.1 on Lion
Hope this helps someone.
From this comment here I was able to debug the problem on my end, it seemed to be a bad -w flag that the clang preprocessor wasn't recognizing properly. Basically, running
defaults write com.apple.dt.Xcode IDEIndexingClangInvocationLogLevel 3
in Terminal increases the verbosity of the indexer, and should help you track down issues. Open Console.app and look for messages from Xcode, the search string IDEIndexingClangInvocation helped me find them.
For me it happened simply because the file had no target membership. If the first few answers did not work for you, go to your .m file (presumably it's this file that you're having trouble with), open the Utilities view (Edit -> Utilities -> Show File Inspector) and under "Target Membership" check the target to which you want this file to belong.

Xcode Crashing When Opening Project File

Xcode keeps crashing on me when I open my project file. I've been able to open it fine for weeks now. Not sure how to diagnose. It only crashes for a specific project.

The crash is generally a sign the project file has been corrupted. Here's a list of possible things you can do to try to fix it.
1. Fix a corrupted *.pbxproj file
Caused by a merge conflict
If you are using version control, it might be caused by a merge conflict that has not yet been resolved.
Using Finder, open the directory that holds your project.
Right click the project file YOUR_PROJECT_NAME.xcodeproj and Open With your preferred text editing tool such as Sublime Text.
Look for merge conflicts which are usually marked using a series of ========= bars.
Resolve the merge conflicts manually or remove the changes of one side.
Caused by unreadable XML
If that fails go into the file and quickly scroll through to see if anything seems out of place - it should generally be readable XML. You could even try an XML validator against it to see if anything amiss was found.
2. Reset your workspace
Using Finder, open the directory that holds yor project.
Right click the project file MyProject.xcodeproj and choose Show Package Contents.
Delete the xcuserdata folder, which should contain a folder with your username on it.
Repeats step 2 and 3 for your workspace file MyProject.workspace
As elaborated by KennyWinker and Paul R on the answers below.
3. Recreate your Xcode project
Note that this should be your last resort as it is quite tedious to do for large projects.
Lastly you could simply re-create it. That might seem like a big pain, but basically you could just create a new project and drag everything under the "Classes" folder into Xcode to start using it (don't forget to also add the frameworks you need).
Just wanted to elucidate on #Paul R's comment.
I had a situation where Xcode was crashing every time I opened a project file. It seemed to be connect to the IB window that was opening. In the end it was deleting the contents of MyProject.xcodeproj/project.xcworkspace/xcuserdata/ that solved this. It did this by resetting the workspace (open files, window scaling, etc.)
Hope this is helpful.
What worked for me?
The only solution that worked for me was deleting the derived data folders of the hanging project, i.e the derived data folders in above directory: ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/. Hope it helps someone.
What didn't?
As mentioned at other places, deleting MyProject.xcodeproj/project.xcworkspace/xcuserdata/ or MyProject.xcodeproj/xcuserdata/ didn't work for me.
Just wanted add some extra content to #Kenny Winker answer...
To delete your xcode user data go,
Find your Xcode project file ex: MyProject.xcodeproj or MyProject.xcworkspace
Right click on it and choose Show Package Contents
Finally, just delete everything inside the folder xcuserdata
Done! :)
Hopefully, this adds a bit more context to people who doesn't know where to find their project user data.
I had similar problem with Xcode 8.1. The reason maybe the project file contains merge conflict data.
You can remove this by opening Xcode project file in TextEdit.
However, in my case there was no merge conflict. Simply deleting content of DerivedData worked for me.
Steps :
Open finder window then select Go Tab -> Go to Folder… (or press Cmd + shift + G)
Enter ~/Library and press Go. This opens Library folder which is hidden by default.
Go to Developer -> Xcode -> DerivedData folder. Delete all the content of this folder.
The DerivedData is like cache i.e. create every time you build/run your app.
Now open the project. It should work with no issues.
Copying Answer of #Sean D which worked for me.
After seeing a suggestion here, I solved this issue by deleting Xcode's preferences. The most reliable way to do that is the following terminal command, issued after quitting Xcode:
defaults delete com.apple.dt.Xcode
ETA: Other suggestions have involved changing or removing certain individual preference settings, but after trying a few of those, none worked for me. There seem to be multiple incompatibilities in the preferences between 6 and 7b3, so trashing the prefs entirely should work around them all.
I did every solution on the thread. But nothing helped me. Don't know why.
Instead of opening the project through Xcode, I opened the project through the terminal using open Project.xcworkspace, it magically works.
Same thing happened to me, and it was some sort of versioning issue that I couldn't fix, so I reverted back to a prior version and it worked. Feels like there are a few bugs in XCode 4 that still need to be worked out.
Inside your project folder find projectName.xcodeproj or projectName.xcworkspace if you have installed pods right click on it and click on (Show package contents) and finally delete everything inside xcuserdata folder
Launch your project it will work fine
I had XCode crashing every time I opened Images.xcassets. The solution was to delete a corrupt PDF file I had just added.
Computer restart
worked for me. While
xcuserdata deletion
and
defaults delete com.apple.dt.Xcode
didn't work for me.
I even was not able to open xcode alone or any of my projects or single .m file.
I was also facing same issue, I did every things like below but didn't work for me!
Deleting the derived data:
~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/
Delete everything inside the folder xcuserdata:
MyProject.xcodeproj/project.xcworkspace/xcuserdata/
and
MyProject.xcodeproj/xcuserdata/
What worked for me?
In my case I have reinstalled Additional Component(Additional downloads) from below link then solved this issue.
https://developer.apple.com/xcode/resources/
If you have any open swift file in a new window (for example when you double click on a .swift file in xCode and it opens in a new window) when xCode opens this might be an issue. I think I had this window opened when closing xCode, then when opening xCode this window opens up again and for some reason crashes xCode. Try to close that open window quickly before it crashes. Strange, but that worked for me.
i tested a lot of ways but after of all i just and only change the directory of my project location every thing fixed and my Xcode works properly and I'm glad now....
I experienced XCode crashing when trying to edit a specific original.m file. None of the above solutions worked, but this did:
Create a new .m file as new.m for example.
Using a text editor open up original.m outside XCode, copy contents and paste into new.m inside XCode. Go back to working in XCode.
Delete and move to trash the original.m
Rename new.m to original.m
Now I can edit original.m without XCode crashing.
In my case there were two windows, one on the internal screen of my MacBook and one on an external each with several tabs opened before Xcode crashed and kept crashing on trying to open the xcworkspace file. The above mentioned solutions did not work. After disconnecting the external display, Xcode started without crashing and both windows were placed on the MacBook's screen. Reattached the display and everything worked as before.
I you use Cocoapods try pod deintegrate, delete the workspace, then pod install. This cured it here (Talking of Xcode 11.2.1 after upgrading the Mac to Catalina and the following crashing Xcode)
Towards a cocoa pods included project, I resolved this issue by renaming workspace file and running "pod install" on terminal again.
I was also facing same issue, everytime xcode was crashing. i restarted mac, cleared derived data/xcuserdata but nothing worked.
I had one more repo so i copied 'project.xcodeproj' file from there and paste it in current repo, this trick resolved my problem.
Go to project -> right click on .xcodeproj -> show package contents -> delete all files in xcuserdata.
Quit the xcode -> reopen
Delete the
Open project in previous version of Xcode and then close it and reopen it on Xcode version that you are using for project,
suppose you are using Xcode 11.1 and it is getting crashed while opening projects, then open it in Xcode 10.0 or 10.1.
Fix a corrupted *.pbxproj file
Reset your workspace
defaults delete com.apple.dt.Xcode
do 1~3 and
git clone ~~~.git newGitProject
copy MyProject.xcodeproj, MyProject.xcworkspace
go to GitProject
paste MyProject.xcodeproj, MyProject.xcworkspace
worked for me.
if you have git repository , try it ;)
