Optimal distribution of power plants on a city - algorithm

I've searched both Google and Stack Overflow for an answer to my problem but I can't find one.
I need to find the optimal distribution for the power network of a city. The city is represented by a connected graph. I want to distribute power plants among some of those nodes in order to cover all of them in the electrical grid. The problem being that every power plant has a certain "range" (it can only cover for example in a "radius" of two nodes). My program needs to find the minimum number of power plants and their locations to cover the entire city.
I know from my searches that it should be related to MST's (minimum spanning trees) but the problem is in the limited range of the power plants.
I've thought about going through every node in the city and calculate the sub-graph containing all nodes within the range of a power plant in that node until I find the one that covers the most uncovered nodes and then keep doing that until the entire city is covered (basically brute forcing the problem) but that seems very unpractical and I was wondering if there is any other more effective way to solve this problem.

Unfortunately, this problem is known to be NP-hard by a reduction from the dominating set problem.
Given a graph G, a dominating set in G is a set of nodes D such that every node in the graph is either in D or is one hop away from D. The problem of finding the smallest dominating set in a graph is known to be NP-hard, and this problem easily reduces to the one you're trying to solve: given a graph G, produce a city (represented as a graph) that has the same structure as G, then give every power plant a radius of 1 (meaning that it can cover a node and all its neighbors). Finding the smallest set of power plants to cover the entire city then ends up producing a dominating set for the graph. Therefore, your problem is NP-hard.
As mentioned in this section of the Wikipedia page, it turns out that this problem is surprisingly hard to approximate. The Wikipedia page lists a few algorithms and approaches for approximating it, but it appears to be one of those NP-hard problems that resists polynomial-time approximation schemes.

Need Algorithm to Allocating Managers to Stores

Suppose you have "n" managers and "n" stores all located randomly across a geographic area. I need to be able to assign each manager to a store. The managers will travel daily from their homes to their assigned store. In general I'd like to minimize the daily distance travelled. This can be interpreted in two ways:
Minimize the average daily travel distance (which is also the same as minimizing the total travel distance.
Minimize the maximum travel distance for any single manager
Is this a known problem? Are there any obvious algorithms to solve it? It seems similar to the traveling salesman problem but it's not quite the same.
Both can be solved polynomially
I'll quickly cover both ways to define an optimal allocation as described in the question. Note that I won't make any assumption on the traveling times, such as triangle inequality. Of course such a property is likely to hold in practice, and there may be better algorithms that use these properties.
Minimize total distance
For this instance, we consider the managers and the stores to be a weighted complete bipartite graph. We then want a matching that minimizes the sum of the weights.
This is called the Balanced Assignment Problem, which is a specific case of minimum/maximum matching. Because the graph is bipartite, this can be solved polynomially. Wikipedia lists a couple of algorithms for solving this problem, most notably the Hungarian algorithm.
Minimize maximum distance
If we wish to minimize the maximum distance, we can find a solution through a binary search. Specifically, we binary search over the maximum distance and attempt to find a matching that does not violate this maximum distance.
For any given maximum distance x, we create the bipartite graph that has edges between manager M and store S if and only if d(M, S) < x. We then try to create a complete matching on this bipartite graph with any bipartite matching algorithm, and through success and failure complete the binary search for the smallest x that allows for matching, thus minimizing the maximum distance.

Minimum number of cameras required to cover all nodes in graph

I came across a problem in leetcode named "Binary Tree Camera".
I was wondering how to approach this similar problem:-
You have to place cameras at nodes of a graph such that whole graph is covered. A camera on a node monitors all its immediate neighbour nodes and itself. Find the minimum number of cameras required to cover all nodes.
This is a set cover problem, which there are many well-known algorithms for. To model it as an instance of the set cover problem, map each node to the set of nodes which a camera at that node would cover. The original problem of choosing the fewest number of nodes is equivalent to choosing the fewest number of those sets.
In general, this is an "NP Hard" problem, meaning there is no known algorithm which always gives the minimum covering and also scales well to large instances of the problem. Since the problem asks for the minimum, a heuristic algorithm is not suitable, so you will need to do something like a backtracking search.
This problem is called the Minimum Dominating Set and is NP-hard for the general graph case. Algorithms exist that approach this problem by either approximation, parameterization or restricting the class of graphs. See the Wikipedia link for details.

Finding X the lowest cost trees in graph

I have Graph with N nodes and edges with cost. (graph may be Complete but also can contain zero edges).
I want to find K trees in the graph (K < N) to ensure every node is visited and cost is the lowest possible.
Any recommendations what the best approach could be?
I tried to modify the problem to finding just single minimal spanning tree, but didn't succeeded.

little detail, which can be significant. To cost is not related to crossing the edge. The cost is the price to BUILD such edge. Once edge is built, you can traverse it forward and backwards with no cost. The problem is not to "ride along all nodes", the problem is about "creating a net among all nodes". The story
Here is the story i have heard and trying to solve.
There is a city, without connection to electricity. Electrical company is able to connect just K houses with electricity. The other houses can be connected by dropping cables from already connected houses. But dropping this cable cost something. The goal is to choose which K houses will be connected directly to power plant and which houses will be connected with separate cables to ensure minimal cable cost and all houses coverage :)
As others have mentioned, this is NP hard. However, if you're willing to accept a good solution, you could use simulated annealing. You are describing something like a cardinality constrained path cover. It's in the Traveling Salesman/ Vehicle routing family of problems and is NP-Hard. To create an algorithm you should ask
Are you only going to run it on small graphs.
Are you only going to run it on special cases of graphs which do have exact algorithms.
Can you live with a heuristic that solves the problem approximately.
Assume you can find a minimum spanning tree in O(V^2) using prim's algorithm.
For each vertex, find the minimum spanning tree with that vertex as the root.
This will be O(V^3) as you run the algorithm V times.
Sort these by total mass (sum of weights of their vertices) of the graph. This is O(V^2 lg V) which is consumed by the O(V^3) so essentially free in terms of order complexity.
Take the X least massive graphs - the roots of these are your "anchors" that are connected directly to the grid, as they are mostly likely to have the shortest paths. To determine which route it takes, you simply follow the path to root in each node in each tree and wire up whatever is the shortest. (This may be further optimized by sorting all paths to root and using only the shortest ones first. This will allow for optimizations on the next iterations. Finding path to root is O(V). Finding it for all V X times is O(V^2 * X). Because you would be doing this for every V, you're looking at O(V^3 * X). This is more than your biggest complexity, but I think the average case on these will be small, even if their worst case is large).
I cannot prove that this is the optimal solution. In fact, I am certain it is not. But when you consider an electrical grid of 100,000 homes, you can not consider (with any practical application) an NP hard solution. This gives you a very good solution in O(V^3 * X), which I imagine is going to give you a solution very close to optimal.
Looking at your story, I think that what you call a path can be a tree, which means that we don't have to worry about Hamiltonian circuits.
Looking at the proof of correctness of Prim's algorithm at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prim%27s_algorithm, consider taking a minimum spanning tree and removing the most expensive X-1 links. I think the proof there shows that the result has the same cost as the best possible answer to your problem: the only difference is that when you compare edges, you may find that the new edge join two separated components, but in this case you can maintain the number of separated components by removing an edge with cost at most that of the new edge.
So I think an answer for your problem is to take a minimum spanning tree and remove the X-1 most expensive links. This is certainly the case for X=1!
Here is attempt at solving this...
For X=1 I can calculate minimal spanning tree (MST) with Prim's algorithm from each node (this node is the only one connected to the grid) and select the one with the lowest overall cost
For X=2 I create extra node (Power plant node) beside my graph. I connect it with random node (eg. N0) by edge with cost of 0. I am now sure I have one power plant plug right (the random node will definitely be in one of the tree, so whole tree will be connected). Now the iterative part. I take other node (eg. N1) and again connected with PP with 0 cost edge. Now I calculate MST. Then repeat this process with replacing N1 with N2, N3 ...
So I will test every pair [N0, NX]. The lowest cost MST wins.
For X>2 is it really the same as for X=2, but I have to test connect to PP every (x-1)-tuple and calculate MST
with x^2 for MST I have complexity about (N over X-1) * x^2... Pretty complex, but I think it will give me THE OPTIMAL solution

But this different connection is really the same (connection to power plant(pp) cost the same, cables remains untouched). That is why we can set one of the nodes as fixed point of contact to the pp. We can be sure, that the node will be in one of the trees, and it does not matter where in the tree is.
So let this be our fixed situation with G as PP. Edge (B,G) with zero cost is added.
Now I am trying to connect second connection with PP (A,G, cost 0)
Now I calculate MST from the PP. Because red edges are the cheapest (the can actually have even negative cost), is it sure, that both of them will be in MST.
So when running MST I get something like this. Imagine detaching PP and two MINIMAL COST trees left. This is the best solution for A and B are the connections to PP. I store the cost and move on.
Now I do the same for B and C connections
I could get something like this, so compare cost to previous one and choose the better one.
This way I have to try all the connection pairs (B,A) (B,C) (B,D) (B,E) (B,F) and the cheapest one is the winner.
For X=3 I would just test other tuples with one fixed again. (A,B,C) (A,B,D) ... (A,C,D) ... (A,E,F)
I just came up with the easy solution as follows:
N - node count
C - direct connections to the grid
E - available edges
1, Sort all edges by cost
2, Repeat (N-C) times:
Take the cheapest edge available
Check if adding this edge will not caused circles in already added edge
If not, add this edge
3, That is all... You will end up with C disjoint sets of edges, connect every set to the grid

Algorithm for finding optimal node pairs in hexagonal graph

I'm searching for an algorithm to find pairs of adjacent nodes on a hexagonal (honeycomb) graph that minimizes a cost function.
each node is connected to three adjacent nodes
each node "i" should be paired with exactly one neighbor node "j".
each pair of nodes defines a cost function
c = pairCost( i, j )
The total cost is then computed as
totalCost = 1/2 sum_{i=1:N} ( pairCost(i, pair(i) ) )
Where pair(i) returns the index of the node that "i" is paired with. (The sum is divided by two because the sum counts each node twice). My question is, how do I find node pairs that minimize the totalCost?

I don't really care about the outmost nodes
My cost function is something like || v(i) - v(j) || (distance between vectors associated with the nodes)
I'm guessing the problem might be NP-hard, but I don't really need the truly optimal solution, a good one would suffice.
Naive algos tend to get nodes that are "locked in", i.e. all their neighbors are taken.
Note: I'm not familiar with the usual nomenclature in this field (is it graph theory?). If you could help with that, then maybe that could enable me to search for a solution in the literature.
This is an instance of the maximum weight matching problem in a general graph - of course you'll have to negate your weights to make it a minimum weight matching problem. Edmonds's paths, trees and flowers algorithm (Wikipedia link) solves this for you (there is also a public Python implementation). The naive implementation is O(n4) for n vertices, but it can be pushed down to O(n1/2m) for n vertices and m edges using the algorithm of Micali and Vazirani (sorry, couldn't find a PDF for that).
This seems related to the minimum edge cover problem, with the additional constraint that there can only be one edge per node, and that you're trying to minimize the cost rather than the number of edges. Maybe you can find some answers by searching for that phrase.
Failing that, your problem can be phrased as an integer linear programming problem, which is NP-complete, which means that you might get dreadful performance for even medium-sized problems. (This does not necessarily mean that the problem itself is NP-complete, though.)

Graph Algorithm To Find All Paths Between N Arbitrary Vertices

I have an graph with the following attributes:
Undirected
Not weighted
Each vertex has a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 edges connected to it.
Vertex count will be < 100
Graph is static and no vertices/edges can be added/removed or edited.
I'm looking for paths between a random subset of the vertices (at least 2). The paths should simple paths that only go through any vertex once.
My end goal is to have a set of routes so that you can start at one of the subset vertices and reach any of the other subset vertices. Its not necessary to pass through all the subset nodes when following a route.
All of the algorithms I've found (Dijkstra,Depth first search etc.) seem to be dealing with paths between two vertices and shortest paths.
Is there a known algorithm that will give me all the paths (I suppose these are subgraphs) that connect these subset of vertices?

There are two stages pre-process and runtime.
pre-process
I have a graph and a subset of the vertices (blue nodes)
I generate all the possible routes that connect all the blue nodes
runtime
I can start at any blue node select any of the generated routes and travel along it to reach my destination blue node.
So my task is more about creating all of the subgraphs (routes) that connect all blue nodes, rather than creating a path from A->B.
There are so many ways to approach this and in order not confuse things, here's a separate answer that's addressing the description of your core problem:
Finding ALL possible subgraphs that connect your blue vertices is probably overkill if you're only going to use one at a time anyway. I would rather use an algorithm that finds a single one, but randomly (so not any shortest path algorithm or such, since it will always be the same).
If you want to save one of these subgraphs, you simply have to save the seed you used for the random number generator and you'll be able to produce the same subgraph again.
Also, if you really want to find a bunch of subgraphs, a randomized algorithm is still a good choice since you can run it several times with different seeds.
The only real downside is that you will never know if you've found every single one of the possible subgraphs, but it doesn't really sound like that's a requirement for your application.
So, on to the algorithm: Depending on the properties of your graph(s), the optimal algorithm might vary, but you could always start of with a simple random walk, starting from one blue node, walking to another blue one (while making sure you're not walking in your own old footsteps). Then choose a random node on that path and start walking to the next blue from there, and so on.
For certain graphs, this has very bad worst-case complexity but might suffice for your case. There are of course more intelligent ways to find random paths, but I'd start out easy and see if it's good enough. As they say, premature optimization is evil ;)
A simple breadth-first search will give you the shortest paths from one source vertex to all other vertices. So you can perform a BFS starting from each vertex in the subset you're interested in, to get the distances to all other vertices.
Note that in some places, BFS will be described as giving the path between a pair of vertices, but this is not necessary: You can keep running it until it has visited all nodes in the graph.
This algorithm is similar to Johnson's algorithm, but greatly simplified thanks to the fact that your graph is unweighted.
Time complexity: Since there is a constant number of edges per vertex, each BFS will take O(n), and the total will take O(kn), where n is the number of vertices and k is the size of the subset. As a comparison, the Floyd-Warshall algorithm will take O(n^3).
What you're searching for is (if I understand it correctly) not really all paths, but rather all spanning trees. Read the wikipedia article about spanning trees here to determine if those are what you're looking for. If it is, there is a paper you would probably want to read:
