There are many posts that tell you how to run Visual Studio 2010 as Administrator.
I will probably be very ashamed when I find my answer but...
My problem is that I can't start Visual Studio NOT elevated!
I always have the "(Administrator)" text on the title.
I want to be able to debug my application in a non-elevated environment.
I have no shortcut/application file that is marked with "Run As Administrator".
Not Devenv.exe and not VSLauncher.exe not shortcuts at Start Menu.. nothing is marked like this and still Visual Studio runs as Administrator.
My user belongs to the local Administrators group.. but that didn't use to enable this administrator mode.
UAC is disabled but this too didn't matter once.
Also checked
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
and removed Visual Studio from the list. Nothing.
Any idea will be appreciated.
I turned UAC back on and what a surprise... Visual Studio runs in normal mode again!
Thanks again Microsoft, for making things very clear...
You can try downloading VSCommands extension and using its Debug As Normal user feature.

I just downloaded VisualSVN Server. It seems to have conflicted with Visual Studio, as none of my projects will now open. The error it is throwing up says
A problem has occurred when loading the Microsoft visual studio menu. To fix this problem, run 'devenv.exe/resetsettings from the command prompt.
I rebooted and am getting this error now:
The MRU package did not load correctly.
I tried "devenv.exe /setup" as commented, but it completely broke my VS2015.
Then I tried "devenv.exe /resetuserdata" and it works now.
The fix for me was to run visual studio using ./devenv.exe /setup using a console session running as Administrator. Running ./devenv.exe /resetsettings didn't fix the issue for me.
I had this issue and I didn't have Visual SVN installed. Resources online suggested that you should check the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0_Config\Packages\{2DC9DAA9-7F2D-11d2-9BFC-00C04F9901D1} and ensure InprocServer32 is correctly set to the vslog.dll file. If it isn't then it suggested running './devenv.exe /setup', however my machine had this correctly set, and running devenv with the setup flag fixed the issue for me.
I was getting this repeatedly in Visual Studio 2015 and it was driving me up the wall. The /resetsettings option worked, but of course deleted all of my customisations, which was very irritating.
The solution turned out to be a path that was too long. See:
http://andydunkel.net/coding/2015/11/13/visual_studio_problem_occured.html
My path wasn't 2048 characters but was close, so try removing some unneeded entries from your PATH and it might solve this problem.
I encountered the same issue with VisualSVN 4.0.12 installation in Visual Studio 2013. (Interestingly, my Visual Studio 2012 instance worked just fine, it was only VS 2013 that was affected.) To resolve the issue with VS 2013, I performed the following steps:
I unblocked the VisualSVN-4.0.12.msi file that was in my downloads directory.
I right-clicked and selected "Repair Installation" from the context menu.
I right-clicked my VS 2013 icon and selected "Run as Administrator".
VS 2013 started up normally, with no error messages.
I think the key was making sure the that the .msi file was unblocked before performing the installation.
devenv.exe /resetsettings
Did not work for me originally. Make sure you run the command prompt as administrator.
Open Visual Studio developer Command prompt in Admin mode.
Run devenv /resetsettings
It will reset you visual studio default settings(theme, layout) etc.
And not any of the project settings.
I had the Visual Studio 2019 installed and had the same issue, chkdsk command resolved it.
Run devenv /resetsettings not
i reset my computer and it is opened directly
Run devenv /resetsettings as Administrator did not work for me.
Running "devenv.exe /resetuserdata" works but you will have to do reconnect to your Azure/Teams which should be straight forward.
When i open visual studio 2010 it is automatically running with administrator.
Let me know how can i open visual studio without administrator rights.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
This solution should only be used if Flabetvibes solution does not work.
Navigate to the Visual Studio install folder (commonly C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2019\Community\Common7\IDE\)
Right-click devenv.exe > Properties
Go to the Security tab and click Advanced button.
Click on Change right beside the owner (the current owner may be "Administrators").
Enter your Windows user name into the text area and click Check Names.
If found, click OK and Apply etc.
Visual Studio should now start in normal mode (without "Administrator").
This has to be repeated every time a new update is installed.
I supposed you are running Visual Studio 2010 under a Windows system, then the solution might be:
Right click on the Visual Studio icon
Choose Properties
Select the Compatibility tab
Unchecked Run this program as an administrator inside the Privilege Level group box
Hope this idea is useful.
I'm trying to launch Visual Studio 2010 from my desktop and I just get this error box popping up saying "Unknown Error"...
Anyone have an idea why this might happen?
I just fixed it, I uninstalled and reinstalled my version of the .NET Framework (v4.0). And then when I again tried to launch Visual studio it started up without any issue.
Here's some things you can check:
Temporary de-activate all Addins
Temporary disable all Extensions
Check the Event Log for any errors
Reset your settings
Start with /ResetSkipPkgs
Based on your comment below, if you can't find the DevEnv.exe when you have opened a VIsual Studio Command prompt, I would suggest you to re-install Visual Studio as it indicates your installation (paths) are in a bad state.
And here are some other things you migh want to check:
VS 2010 Crashes on Startup with "Unknown Error"
Visual Studio 2010 quit working...now gives me an "unknown error" dialogue when launched
Visual Studio 2010 Startup Errors
Visual Studio 2010 crashes on startup after installing SP1
Open Visual Studio Command Prompt with Administrator permission and type the following,
devenv /ResetSkipPkgs
the Solution of this problem ist very simple.
Install VS 2010 on a other machine and export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0 to a file. Copy the file to your target machine and rename the path above to ".old", then double click your exported reg-file and wait a time....
After this my Visual Studio was starting correctly.
The other solution, that people post wont work in my case.
I hope this will help some body.
Enjoy
Sven
I had the same problem.. Instead of completely uninstalling .net framework, I just repaired the .net framework from the repair/uninstall option available in Control Panel of my Windows 7 Ultimate pc. Finally I got another error that, Visual Studio could not create AppData folder in my system. Then, I right click the Visual Studio icon and selected Run as Administrator. This worked for me!! Now, Visual Studio 2010 is working on my pc!! Try this out if you want..
I think I may have accidently disabled stylecop in my Visual Studio 2008 enviroment. If I right click a project and click "Run Stylecop", or "Stylecop Settings" nothing happens. Its the same from the Tools menu. It runs fine from Visual Studio 2005. I have Microsoft StyleCop 4.3.3.0. I was playing about with making custom rules and may have clicked Yes on a random box that popped up when there was a problem with a custom rule dll that I created, so I think this may have disabled Stylecop in my VS 2008 enviroment.
Does anyone know how to get this re-enabled? I have re-installed stylecop but to no avail.
Thanks
Neil
Problem solved, run devenv /resetskippkgs (not from cmd though, has to be via windows interface)
I installed the ReSharper evaluation version and uninstalled it. Afterwards Visual Studio's Intellisense stopped working. I have restarted computer but I still have this problem.
Can anyone please help me here?
I am using Visual Studio 2005. Thanks.
Try opening Visual Studio Command Prompt and entering:
devenv.exe /ResetSettings
Try going to Tools > Options > Text Editor > C# and checking all of the options under Statement completion. I think Resharper disables these upon installation.
Sometimes deleting the ncb file helps. Go to your solution directory and find the sln file, there will also be a file with the same name and the extension ncb. Make sure Visual Studio is closed (at least don't have that project open) and then delete that file. Don't worry Visual Studio will rebuild it for you.
The devenv.exe /ResetSettings was the only thing that worked for me. The full path in command prompt is as follows (for VS 2008)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE>devenv.exe /ResetSettings
took me a while to find so I thought I'd post this to help
devenv /ResetSettings worked after uninstalling ReSharper. I did not have to do a repair. I did verify that the settings were checked under Text Editor > C#, but ResetSettings was the only thing that worked.
You could try to reset your Visual Studio setting by
End Process devenv.exe from Tast Manager if it is running .(It can close your Browser and Visual Studio)
Run devenv /resetuserdata from Start -> Run
Hope It can help you.
Disable updating intelliSense like in this article:
http://amastaneh.blogspot.com/2007/11/disable-updating-intellisense.html
Eventhough for old version seems to work for me.
I would try a "repair" on the installation first. Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, select Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, click "Change/Remove". It will load up the install dialog and give you the option to do a "repair".
YMMV, but at least it should reset a lot of the VS resources to their "fresh" state.
