I hope someone here can help. I’ve spent days looking through forums and google results to no avail :(
Basically I have a friend that was having a magento site developed for them, but the company doing the developing have been giving them the run around for over a year. Because of this, my friend has asked if I could move this onto my shared host to continue developing, and then once complete, to move onto their own VPS.
Below is a list of things I have done:
Moved all files to shared host
imported .sql file into a new database
altered .xml to new database name and password etc
altered the database to point to the relevent IP address for
developing instead of the previous development url (friend doesn’t
own the url previously used)
deleted all cache and other temp
files as per online instructions to moving magento.
reindexed cache and index management.
After doing this, the site loads fine, until I want to navigate into a category or product page etc, then I get a full screen 404, not magento’s 404.
If I manually add index.php into the middle of the url, the page will load. If I disable the SEO rewrite then obviously everything works fine (other than any links that have been manually created into images etc of course). This lead me to believe it was a problem with rewrites, so I altered the rewrite url in .htaccess to point to google, and when I click on a category etc, that then indeed directs me to google. So I know the problem isn’t rewrites not working.
I then found a site suggesting it could be a problem importing the database that replaced 0’s with 1’s in certain database locations, however I checked this and all is just as it should be.
I know everything was working fine before the move, as I was developing the site for my friend whilst it was on the original server (long story, people who were being payed to do things weren’t, so I was doing it, however they refused to give ftp access to be able to change faults in the skin)
Version of the magento concerned is 1.501
Also, I already have one magento install working successfully on my shared host, so I know the host is compatible with magento.
One further thing that I believe proves apache rewrites are working (I've been told a lot that they can't be!, I've even checked with the hosting company just to make ultra sure):
If I amend the .htaccess from index.php to http://ip.ip.ip.ip/~example/index.php then the categories start to work!!
However this isn’t a fix, because no matter what I cannot get other links to work, e.g: On a few pages I redirected the category to land at a “landing page” then there was a description and an image to then click to take you to the product page. These links now do NOT work!!!
If anyone can give me any ideas where I need to be looking I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I've found the solution.
Magento obviously didn't like being run from the ip address followed by a folder.
I've since assigned it a temporary domain name and everything is working 100%

I'm currently trying to upload a html+css page to my hosting service (1&1 internet).
Unfortunately, I have very little experience in that; and would like to ask this question:
How is it possible to update the existing homepage on a site that already has been uploaded to the web?
I'm using WebspaceExplorer. Now, when I enter it, (Hosting section) there are a lot of folders and files with a few options like download, delete and so on.
I can't seem to find out how to make the program understand which one should be the homepage. This is because I see that the page I uploaded is online and accessible, but is not the first page the user sees! How can I change it?
It may be confusing because of the poor description so here is the url of both:

This is for a client so I won't share exact domains but the problem is as follows..
I took over development of a website from a prior developer.
The hosting is Hostgator Business.
The primary domain is primary.com.
There is an addon domain addon.com.
The primary domain document root is /home1/username/public_html.
The addon's document root is /home1/username/addon.com.
www.addon.com had a WordPress installation which the developer had edited instead of using plugins to achieve his goals. The site also needed a complete redesign so I felt it logical to simply wipe the installation and replace it.
So, I deleted all of the WordPress files and uploaded a new copy of WordPress from wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz
Prior to deleting the old installation, the domain loaded files from it's document root perfectly.
After uploading the new installation instead of resolving to addon.com it is instead resolving to primary.com/addon.com
I've never seen this happen before so I'm lost.
There's no errors in any available logs.
All file permissions are correct.. I've triple-checked.
I've tried deleting all files and creating simple index.php and index.html files to see if it would access them ... it doesn't.
This happens in each browser I use on Windows and Linux.
I don't understand it because all I did was swap out the old WP install for a new one.
I went and re-uploaded the old WordPress installation so everything is 100% how it was but it is still going to primary.com/addon.com instead of addon.com.
Has anyone faced this issue before? I usually use Bluehost but even when I've used Hostgator in the past I've never seen this happen.
I double-checked the addon domain settings as well as anything else I could think of and everything appears normal.
I even deleted the addon domain and re-added it with the document root of /home1/username/addon.com and it still goes to primary.com/addon.com in the browser.
I submitted a ticket with Hostgator but they have not replied yet.
I'm sorry if this is long. This is my first time asking for help on here and I wanted to be sure I included everything I could.
Hostgator finally got back to me.
The previous developer had used the one-click WordPress install.
Apparently once someone uses a one-click install the only way it works is if you keep using the one-click install/you cannot do it manually any more.
From all the servers and sites I've setup this makes no sense and is a problem with Hostgator. Support did not really tell me anything other than "you have to use the one click install since the prior developer did". Great service.
Hope this saves someone some hassle.
From this it sounds like you were moving a WordPress site from the primary domain to an add on domain.
Simply moving the files from the primary to the add on domain will not make it work on the add on domain because in the database and throughout the coding of the WordPress site it would all be configured and coded for the primary domain.
It sounds like you would need to update the site home and site url from the primary to the add on domain url.

Also I would be suggest using a search and replace type plugin to go through all the internal coding to update the urls and links to the add on domain.

I know that that similar issues and topics exist, however my issue differs slightly and none of the proposed fixes have worked.
I was accessing the Magento backend as normal. Approximately 10 minutes after that I could no longer access the Magento backend.
What I mean is that when I go to the admin url login page, I get a 404. However the 404 isn't generated by my host, it's generated by my webstore.
Everything about my webstore works as normal.

I have a few main issues.
Admin Custom URL had been set (but not by me). It was set over a year ago when Magento was installed. It worked entirely fine until today.
I do not even have "admin/url/custom" and "admin/url/use_custom" in my "core_config_data" PHP table. It simply does not exist so I cannot change it. I looked manually for it and did a search for it. Nothing.
I tried updating the local.xml file and clearing "var/caches" and "var/sessions" but that did not work either.
I've been working this for hours and it's beyond frustrating. It's imperative that this be fixed ASAP because we are a fairly sizeable company.

First Check your Apache configurations
I know that you said you were only in the Magento admin but I would first check that apache was configured correctly. This is the first point of contact and you need to ensure that it's working right.
You need to locate a default Magento htaccess file that you can upload to your server. There's additional configurations that you need to make if you're in a subdirectory and also check to make sure that your mod_rewrite is working properly. There's an extensive tutorial on these things here, magento htaccess.
Make sure that you have the right magento admin url
I have to assume that you know what your magento admin url is, but of course I would double check that you're getting it right. There is an option in the admin area to change the admin url, you could have adjusted that on accident.
You say that you don't have "admin/url/custom" and "admin/url/use_custom" in your core_config_data table. This actually means that you didn't set the magento admin url from the admin area. However there is a third place that you can look for your admin url. This is in app/etc/local.xml but you couldn't have changed this from the administration area.
Did you turn off search engine friendly urls?
If you had been accessing your administrative area using /admin and then accidentally turned off SEF urls, then your admin area could have just simply moved to /index.php/admin. Of course you mentioned that you have a custom admin url, but I don't know what that is, so I'm giving examples with the default.
I can't really give you any more suggestions without more information. I hope that this helps!

I have recently moved a Magento site from a subdomain to it's destination domain at picnprint.me on a different server. I am experiencing two problems at the moment since moving the site to the new server.
The admin area CSS and JS paths are being rendered incorrectly.
For example... The Magento Admin page is looking for adminhtml/default/default/reset.css instead of picnprint.me/skin/adminhtml/default/default/…
If I place the CSS and JS files in the locations that the admin pages are currently pathing to then the Magento Admin will load normally but won't allow me to login.
Also, All the product pages on the front end are displaying blank, the site template loads but no product content loads.
Does anyone know what the cause of these issues could be and how I remedy the problem?

Using your favourite RDMS tool (such as phpMyAdmin) open the table core_config_data, correct the values for the paths web/unsecure/base_url and web/secure/base_url. Make sure dev/js/merge_files and dev/css/merge_css_files are both 0.
Clear the cache by deleting all files in var/cache/ in your Magento directory.
I had the same issue. I know this may not be the answer to the above question but still feel that this could help someone with a very similar issue.
I have had this problem a couple of times now and end up googling in circles for 20 minutes before I remember the solution. This post is mostly for my future self who will undoubtedly have the issue again.
I had 'combine javascript and css enabled'. My locally combined css and js files were being automatically deployed to the server.
The issue was that my media folder where all the css and js was now being loaded from did not have the correct permissions. After granting apache write permission all of my troubles went away :).
It is probably a good idea to add the media/css and media/js folders to .gitignore.
I am trying to setup multiple stores within same hosting account and I studied many interesting guides out there on the matter.
Seems to me I figured out simplest solution for me - map both my dot com sites onto the same directory on host, and modify .htaccess to launch different website depending on URL, like so:
SetEnvIf Host .*anatscraftonia.* MAGE_RUN_CODE="anatscraftonia";
SetEnvIf Host .*anatscraftonia.* MAGE_RUN_TYPE="website";
My first store works fine, but when I go to anatscraftonia.com , all I get always is a Magento 404 page.
I checked all settings, multiple stores are defined and code above is copy/paste from Admin console under Website I added. I have Home page enabled for All Stores and Base URL redefined for both Secure/Unsecure. I also tried changing website to store, with no improvements.
What else am I missing? How do I even know what page is it trying to go to, or whether it even gets “no-route” or just totally whacked…

I don't think you'll be able to drop those files into a current installation, but it should give you an idea where to stick some logging functions to see why Magento is routing to a 404.
I am not 100% sure what you are trying to achieve but why not use a single instance of magento to handle both stores and magentos own multi store capability..
