PLaying Video in Background in wp8 - windows-phone-7

I am developing an app for Wp7.x and Wp8 which runs YouTube Video with lock screen disabled.
I have seen that new version of MyTube App and Microsoft version of your tube app which has been pulled back had a feature which allows user to keep listening to Video(Audio part) when phone is locked via lock screen. I want to Develop a YouTube Radio type of app which keeps pulling new Specific type of Viedo Url from youTube site and play the audio part even if running in background or In a Locked screen.
See MyTube App in wp8 store to know more what I am talking about.

The Windows Phone application goes to dormant/tombstone mode when the phone screen is locked. This behavior can be altered by changing the properties UserIdleDetectionMode and ApplicationIdleDetectionMode of PhoneApplicationService class. By default UserIdleDetectionMode and ApplicationIdleDetectionMode are set to Enable, which allows the service to lock the phone when the user is idle and these deactivate the application when the phone is locked.
As shown below, I have used ApplicationIdleDetectionMode, which when set to Disable doesn't deactivate the application when the phone is locked.
PhoneApplicationService.Current.ApplicationIdleDetectionMode = IdleDetectionMode.Disabled;
PhoneApplicationFrame rootFrame = App.Current.RootVisual as PhoneApplicationFrame;
if (rootFrame != null)
{
rootFrame.Obscured += new EventHandler<ObscuredEventArgs>(rootFrame_Obscured);
rootFrame.Unobscured += new EventHandler(rootFrame_Unobscured);
}
Once ApplicationIdleDetectionMode is Disabled, it cannot be Enabled until the application is re-launched. If you try to enable it, it will throw an exception. To handle the locking and unlocking state of the device you can call the Obscured and Unobscured event handler of RootFrame. Obscured will be called when the phone is getting locked. Here we should use minimum CPU, less battery consumption etc. and Unobscured gets called when the phone is getting unlocked. This is the stage when we can resume all the states of the application.

In Windows Phone 8, you can actually give video URLs to the BackgroundAudioPlayer class and it will play them in the background. I use this technique in Podcaster to switch between audio and video, though it's a user interaction that triggers the switch.
Updated
In Windows Phone 7 this technique doesn't work. Furthermore, MediaElement will always pause video when the lock screen is shown (even if ApplicationIdleDetectionMode is disabled) and there's nothing you can do about it.
In short, you can work around it in WP8 but there's nothing you can do on WP7

How to ensure that a Xamarin Forms app (AVAudioSessionCategoryPlayback mode) is suspended correctly by iOS to prevent battery drain?

I have a Xamarin Forms app running in AVAudioSessionCategory = Playback mode and it works very nice, background audio is playing and even my timers keep running in the background, which is fine during playback.
How can I ensure that after a user has decided to stop playing audio (either by pressing a button inside of the app or by pressing the pause button on the lock screen) my app will go into a Suspended state and it won't drain the battery?
Is there a way to either force my app to go suspended or a way to verify whether it has?
As a side-note: Hooking the OnSleep method in App.xaml.cs is NOT sufficient because it is being called every time the app goes to the background even if it's playing audio, my timers are running, HTTP calls working, etc.
UPDATE:
Made an interesting discovery today:
Timers keep running running in the background when the app is started from Visual Studio in debug mode (over WiFi).
Timers seem to get suspended automatically by the OS (iOS) when the app enters background in Release mode.
My conclusion is: maybe the entire problem lies somewhere in the 'framework' that is added to the app by Xamarin to ensure communication between Visual Studio and the app? (Console, breakpoints, etc.) It would be a logical explanation.

Location Tracking in Background

I am developing a windows phone app that uses users current location, I am making the app in 7 OS. My question is, Can I track the location in background, that is when the screen is locked?
I know this is a possibility in wp8 as it provides us with GeoLocator class, but can I achieve this in wp7? I am basically making a runtracker app hence I would like my app to track the location even when its in background, is it really feasible?
Your help is always appreciated!!
It is possible to keep the app running under lock screen, as it does, for example, Endomondo app.
Using Idle Detection, you can keep the app on, although screen is locked, and you can keep on tracking the location. Actually, it is not running in background, but in the foreground. Just the screen is locked. So, be careful not to drain user's battery.
You have to set the PhoneApplicationService.ApplicationIdleDetectionMode property to Disabled, for example in InitializePhoneApplication() method in App.xaml.cs:
PhoneApplicationService.Current.ApplicationIdleDetectionMode = IdleDetectionMode.Disabled;
Note that there are special certification requirements for this type of apps. Refer to section 6.3 (Apps running under a locked screen) of the following page:
Additional requirements for specific app types for Windows Phone
I got the same problem in one on my apps..
I don't think it' s feasible for wp7..
Bt if you want to do it with wp8 you can refer following link.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/jj681691%28v=vs.105%29.aspx
And to know about background supported and unsupported API's http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/hh202942%28v=vs.105%29.aspx/css
GeoCoordinateWatcher Class exists in WP7, but here is the documentation from MSDN -
This API, used for obtaining the geographic coordinates of the device,
is supported for use in background agents, but it uses a cached
location value instead of real-time data. The cached location value is
updated by the device every 15 minutes.

Windows Phone XNA Games Hangs on Resume when Guide is Visible on WP7.x

My Windows Phone XNA game calls Guide.BeginShowKeyboardInput to get the user's name. While the Guide's input screen is shown, if the user presses the Home or Search (hardware) buttons, the game is deactivated as usual - but if the user then presses the Back (hardware) button, the game should resume but it doesn't. Instead it shows the "Resuming..." message until Windows Phone gives up trying to resume the game and kills the process.
Please note:
My app is failing Microsoft certification because of this problem - I really need to fix it!
This only happens in my game when the Guide input screen is shown - when it's not shown, the game
resumes properly after being deactivated.
This problem only occurs when the game is run on WP7.x (verified problem on WP7.5 and
WP7.8) - although the game seems to resume properly on WP8 devices.
I've created a blank XNA game project, called Guide.BeginShowKeyboardInput and tested it using WP7.x devices, and this problem-behavior doesn't occur.
I've tested the game without enabling Music & my Trial License manager (they use timers) and it still does this.
Exact same behavior occurs in the emulator (resume-failure on WP7.x emulators, works fine on WP8
emulator)
I used threads to asynchronously download content during the loading screen - but they already completed and exited.
I don't believe other threads are running, although this seems like
it could be a thread-blocking issue.
Any other ideas on what could be blocking the game from resuming when the Guide.IsVisible or how to debug/resolve this problem?
The solution to this issue was simply to NOT use SuppressDraw when dealing with any operation that passes control outside of the app, e.g. Launchers, Choosers and the Guide.
Have you tried calling "Guide.EndShowKeyboardInput" in either the Deactivating or closing events?
So that the guide is closed before the app suspends, you do get 10 seconds to suspend so this might be worth looking into.
If you want the guide to re-show on resume, then in your state saving code just have a flag and open the guide if it's set.

GPS based application not running under lock screen in windows phone

I have developed a windows phone application and it works fine when it is open and running actively.
It tracks the user movements on the map and shows the position moves with push pins.
Now I want to ensure that the same application runs even the phone is locked when this app was open.
I have added the below code for it to work under lock screen. After this when I verified the app I realized it is not running when the application is locked.
Is there any other change I need to make to get this work under lock screen.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
private void initiliazesettings()
{
PhoneApplicationService.Current.UserIdleDetectionMode =
IdleDetectionMode.Disabled;
}
To have your app running under lock screen on Windows Phone 7.0/7.1/8.0, you need to set ApplicationIdleDetectionMode, not UserIdleDetectionMode. See details here.
Supossing you placed the method in the right place, that code only keeps the screen on, but doesn't make your app run in background when the lock screen is activated. Windows Phone 7 apps cannot run in background, they get tombstoned.
For Windows Phone 8 this is possible - see the sample here from MSDN.
However for Windows Phone 7/7.1 you can't do this.
You can prevent the screen from locking due to the user not interacting with it (as your code shows). However if you manually lock the screen the app will still be made dormant or tombstoned and your location code won't run.
Your only other option is to use a scheduled background task to read the location of the phone, but bear in mind that this is far from real time data (it is a cached location and you only run once every 30 minutes in the best case scenario).

Disable screen capture wp7

I am developing a security related windows phone application. I need to disable/block screen capture for my application.
In Android, we used to set a flag FLAG_SECURE to the window of which we want to block the screen capture. Is there anything similar in wp7 also??
Thanks
You can't do screen captures on Windows Phone unless you use homebrew apps, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
And even if there were screen capture apps on the marketplace, you would have no way to be safe. Even if you found a way to prevent screen captures, how would you prevent users from taking a picture of the phone with a camera, or sideloading the app on the emulator then making screen captures of the emulator?
There's currently no API available to developers that allows you to perform screen captures with a locked device.
The alternatives are as follows:
Unlock your device and sideload one of the homebrew based screen
capture apps.
Take a picture of the screen itself (Crude but it
would do the job).
Microsoft have stated that they do not intend to change this in the near future (CNET Article)
