I'm trying to install Shoes on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and currently have Ruby 1.9.3 and 2.0.0 installed, with 1.9.3 as the default. I tried several different methods, running several different scripts, but nothing seems to be successful. I haven't gotten any error messages; The scripts just install a lot of libraries and then seem to build Shoes, and, though I now have a shoes directory full of files, when I try to execute /dist/shoes I get this error:

These are the the steps I've taken, in order:
I downloaded the Shoes3 .run file from the official website, but when I tried to execute it, I get this output:

I then attempted to follow the instructions for installing on Ubuntu; I ran the script they linked to, which took about 20 minutes, but afterwards I couldn't find the red-shoes directory: It didn't exist. All I got to show for it was a /tmp/shoes_build/ directory with a "chruby opt ruby-1.9.3-p392 ruby-build" directory listing.
Then I tried running the script from that same website listed directly on the site, not linked to. No Shoes. Lots of things were installed, but when I tried to execute /dist/shoes, I got the same error.
Finally, I tried executing the commands listed on the Spiral of Hope site listed under 'SUCCESS: Ubuntu?'. Again, it runs and installs lots of libraries, but Shoes isn't functional. It is neither a recognized command when typing shoes, nor can I execute anything successfully.
I don't know what else to do. I'm no Linux buff, I just have a knowledge of basic Bash commands, and I recently installed Ubuntu, so I haven't done any weird custom installs or anything. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, and how to do it right?

I've read a ton about how El Capitan's SIP messes up brew, ruby, and it's gems. The most recent thing I read is that brew was updated to better support El Capitan, so I followed a number of commands from an article online and apparently cleaned my whole system up and reinstalled all gems. Now, from terminal, everything works great. I don't have to write anything special to install gems... just gem install <name>.
However, SublimeText seems to be using a different Ruby. If I type which ruby, it shows as /usr/local/bin/ruby. But in SublimeText, it's showing this error about not finding the right gem (mechanize in this case): /usr/local/Cellar/ruby/2.3.1/lib/ruby/2.3.0/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:55:inrequire': cannot load such file -- mechanize (LoadError)`
I tried creating a different build system file for Ruby, which points to ruby at /usr/local/bin/ruby, but it still shows this error (but below, it shows [cmd: ['/usr/local/bin/ruby']...
This has also caused me major issues trying to get the shoes gem to install.
Long question shortened: is there a definitive way to clear my system of all past brew, ruby, gems, etc etc, and redo it in a proper way that actually works for El Capitan?

I installed Ruby on Windows via RubyInstaller, with the associated DevKit.
I'm trying to run various scripts (mainly Jekyll), and I'm getting all sorts of errors about paths. For instance:
...cannot load such file -- redcarpet.so (LoadError)
Or:
...cannot load such file -- 2.0/redcloth_scan (LoadError)
Specifically, in both those cases, I'm trying to run "redcloth.bat" and "redcarpet.bat" in the bin directory of the Ruby directory.
I feel like I'm missing something basic with paths. Note that this has never worked -- I installed the RubyInstaller, then the DevKit, then the Jekyll gem...and this is what happened.
Is there something basic about this installation that I failed to set?

What we found was we had installed the mswin32 version of RedCloth, we first got the no such file to load.
We then went to our
C:\ruby200/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/RedCloth-mswin32
Directory , added the 2.0 file and copied the redcloth_scan.so file into the 2.0 directory.
We started getting another error that was similar.
We decided we would just uninstall the precompiled version of the gem, and start with the normal RedCloth-2.4.9.gem to be compiled locally with devkit.
Once this was installed, we again went to the lib dir for the gem.
CD C:/ruby200/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/RedCloth-2.4.9/lib
We created a 2.0 directory

I am trying to install Maglev on Mac OS X Lion with rvm, but running
rvm install maglev
as instructed on the github page only yields a 404 error:
curl: (22) The requested URL returned error: 404
ERROR: The requested url does not exist: 'http://glass-downloads.gemstone.com/maglev/MagLev-26852.Darwin-i386.tar.gz'
which does not seem too helpful, as it just points out that the respective file does not exist on the gemstone server. Google does not seem to know about this, so I thought about asking a question here. However, before doing so I tried some more and and got a little further running
rvm install maglev-head
as mentioned in some blog posts. This finally finds an appropriate file, downloads a bunch of things and starts to compile. It starts to look really well at a point where it says
Installing maglev to /[user-dir]/.rvm/rubies/maglev-head
in green, but unfortunately it does not get much further. The installation hangs after saying

Generating maglev HTML documentation
Generating smalltalk FFI.
or at least it takes forever (more than 30 minutes) without saying anything.
Stopping the installation at this point still looks promising giving me

You need to do "rvm get head" first; I can see it was looking for MagLev-26852.Darwin-i386.tar.gz, which was for an older version both of MagLev and of RVM.
I'd do an "rvm remove maglev; rvm install maglev" It shouldn't take more than a few minutes then to build once it's downloaded.
I am attempting to work locally on a PHP application which I cloned from the Git repository my partner and I use.
He uses a Mac, and until now I have been working on the app in a virtual Ubuntu Linux environment. Both environments have been able to use Compass polling with the same file structure and files.

All I've been able to find through searching is that it may have something to do with the fact that Windows capitalizes its drive names, although the lack of slashes in the returned path makes me think the problem may be elsewhere.
Does anyone know why I might receive this error in Windows, but not other platforms?
NOTE: I have found a work-around involving installing ruby (and compass) through Windows' command prompt rather than Cygwin, and that should work fine for now. Still, if anyone has ideas, I'm still curious as to what the problem could be.
According to this commit, this is a problem caused by a compass dependency called FSSM. It is used to monitor file changes in compass. A workaround is described in this comment.
It seems that FSSM detects that ruby is running inside a Windows box, and treats paths in the Windows' way (C:\blabla). Commenting out the line 26 of the file <fssm_gem_path>/lib/fssm/pathname.rb makes compass watch work as expected. You can also add
unless path[0, 1] == File::SEPARATOR
to the end of line 26 to make it work.
I thought I'd just provide a little more info to help people find the pathname.rb file.
On the cygwin prompt type:
gem env
This (unsurprisingly) brings up a load of info about your Ruby Gems installtion. Look for the line which specifies the INSTALLATION DIRECTORY. Mine was:
/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8
Now in Windows Explorer navigate to this location but substitute "usr" for your cygwin installation directory. Therefore the above path becomes:
C:\cygwin\lib\ruby\gems\1.8
Once in this location drill down until you come across the fssm gem directory.
Within this [fssm] directory go into:
/lib/fssm/
...and there you should find the pathname.rb file.
Edit it as above and all is well. I hope this helps.

I was running into this same error with a slightly different setup. My project folder was on a network drive (ruby and sass/compass installed locally), and every time I made a change to a .scss file compass watch would crash with similar errors to the OP. I solved the issue by mapping my network drive instead of accessing it directly via the network (right clicked on My Computer and choose map network drive so I could access my remote drive at A:).
Now, instead of doing 'compass watch //SERVERNAME/My_Project' (I'm using Git Bash), I do 'compass watch a/My_Project' and compass stopped crashing.

Using Cygwin, re install a compass dev release (such as 0.13+). Works for me with Compass 0.13.alpha.4 (Markab)
To do so:
gem uninstall compass
gem install compass --pre --no-rdoc --no-ri
I am trying to install the curb gem, which is libcurl bindings for Ruby, and of course I need to have "A working (lib)curl installation, with development stuff" installed on my computer. So, I went to the cURL Download Wizard and downloaded this package.
But adding the bin into my PATH does not produce improvement and I still get an error when I try to install the curb gem, such as:
extconf.rb:19: Can't find libcurl or curl/curl.h
(RuntimeError)
Even though, curl is already in the PATH.
EDIT: I also tried raking the gem, as per the instructions. It fails saying "make failed" and throwing a bunch of errors like this:

I realise this is a very old question, but I had this exact problem today and found the instructions on someone else's site. In a nutshell:
Get the 32-bit development version of curl (see my notes below)
Add the curl bin directory to your PATH
Run the following command (replacing the paths to curl as necessary)
gem install curb --platform=ruby -- -- --with-curl-lib="C:/curl-7.27.0-devel-mingw32/bin" --with-curl-include="C:/curl-7.27.0-devel-mingw32/include"
A couple of personal notes:
Even though I am on 64-bit Windows 7, I had to download the 32-bit libcurl version under "Win32 - Generic", identified as "Win32 2000/XP zip".
I got the error c:/Ruby193/lib/ruby/1.9.1/mkmf.rb:246:in 'initialize': Permission denied - mkmftmp1.log (Errno::EACCES) while installing the gem. This rather messed up page here suggested that it might be a problem with my anti-virus, and that just retrying a couple of times might work, and indeed, it did.
