I tried creating a new js file from the mac terminal (i.e., mate sample.js) but got the below error:
-bash: mate: command not found
I'm not sure how to create a new file directly from the Terminal. Can anyone help me out?
touch someFile.js
or
vim someFile.js
or
nano someFile.js
or
cp someOtherFIle.js someFile.js

You are trying to create and open a file with TextMate. For that to work, you have to meet two conditions:
Having TextMate installed
Having TextMate's command-line tool (mate) installed (in TM 2.0, you can do that from Preferences > Terminal tab)

I installed nix on osx using this command:
$ sh <(curl https://nixos.org/nix/install) --darwin-use-unencrypted-nix-store-volume
Following instructions here:

I'm trying to build a project that uses the nix shell and it's telling me to edit something in a file called nix.conf. However the project documentation was setup using a linux or nixos distribution so not sure where this file is located on osx. (The docs say to look in /etc/nix/nix.conf, but this file doesn't exist in osx)
/etc/nix/nix.conf may not exist, you need to create it.

whenever I open the terminal this line
bash: /home/user/.bash_completion/alacritty: No such file or directory
is displayed. I tried to install alacritty terminal but it failed and there after I am seeing this line in the terminal. How to solve this problem?
Looking at the install instructions here, you would have done:
echo "source ~/.bash_completion/alacritty" >> ~/.bashrc
So, just edit ~/.bashrc and delete the line source ~/.bash_completion/alacritty.

Before upgrading my ubuntu install to 16.04 invoking 'octave' would open the octave interpreter, useful as a powerful calculator.
Now, typing octave opens the octave gui. I need to type 'octave --no-gui' to get my interpreter back.'
Why does this happen? How can I restore 'octave' opening the interpreter?
Defaults change over time depending on typical usage. To fix it, just:
Add an alias to your ~/.bashrc
alias octave="octave --no-gui"
Now source your file to enable it.
source ~/.bashrc

Hello i am using MAC Mavericks system.i have installed wireshark .dmg and x11 .dmg(xquartz) .But when i try to open wireshark in Xterm ,using the command
bash-3.2$ open/Applications/Wireshark.app/
i get the following error message.
bash: open/Applications/Wireshark.app/: No such file or directory.
Actually i can see a blue icon called wireshark in my applications folder,but i get the above error message instead of the wireshark program.
Am i missing something?Please give some suggestions on installation of Wireshark on MAC Mavericks?
I am a newbie in wireshark.please help me .
As Dagg Nabbit said, place a space after open; the command to open a file from the command line is
open {file}
so, to open /Applications/Wireshark.app, do
open /Applications/Wireshark.app

Im trying to download plugins for my macVim but there is no ./Vim folder? when I download macvim all I get is the application file which works.....am I downloading it from the wrong place?
In Terminal.app, run the following commands to create the ~/.vim directory and the ~/.vimrc file.
$ cd
$ touch .vimrc
$ mkdir .vim
$ open .vim
~/.vim (case sensitive!) you mean? If it dose not exist, just create it.
