I have an Apache server with a default configuration of Elasticsearch and everything works perfectly, except that the default configuration has a max size of 1GB.
I don't have such a large number of documents to store in Elasticsearch, so I want to reduce the memory.
I have seen that I have to change the -Xmx parameter in the Java configuration, but I don't know how.
I have seen I can execute this:
bin/ElasticSearch -Xmx=2G -Xms=2G
But when I have to restart Elasticsearch this will be lost.
Is it possible to change max memory usage when Elasticsearch is installed as a service?
In ElasticSearch >= 5 the documentation has changed, which means none of the above answers worked for me.
I tried changing ES_HEAP_SIZE in /etc/default/elasticsearch and in /etc/init.d/elasticsearch, but when I ran ps aux | grep elasticsearch the output still showed:
/usr/bin/java -Xms2g -Xmx2g # aka 2G min and max ram
I had to make these changes in:
/etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options
# Xms represents the initial size of total heap space
# Xmx represents the maximum size of total heap space
-Xms1g
-Xmx1g
# the settings shipped with ES 5 were: -Xms2g

For anyone looking to do this on Centos 7 or with another system running SystemD, you change it in
/etc/sysconfig/elasticsearch
Uncomment the ES_HEAP_SIZE line, and set a value, eg:
# Heap Size (defaults to 256m min, 1g max)
ES_HEAP_SIZE=16g
(Ignore the comment about 1g max - that's the default)
Create a new file with the extension .options inside /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options.d and put the options there. For example:
sudo nano /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options.d/custom.options
and put the content there:
# JVM Heap Size - see /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options
-Xms2g
-Xmx2g
It will set the maximum heap size to 2GB. Don't forget to restart elasticsearch:
sudo systemctl restart elasticsearch
Now you can check the logs:
sudo cat /var/log/elasticsearch/elasticsearch.log | grep "heap size"
You'll see something like so:

Previous answers were insufficient in my case, probably because I'm on Debian 8, while they were referred to some previous distribution.
On Debian 8 modify the service script normally place in /usr/lib/systemd/system/elasticsearch.service, and add Environment=ES_HEAP_SIZE=8G
just below the other "Environment=*" lines.
Now reload the service script with systemctl daemon-reload and restart the service. The job should be done!
If you use the service wrapper provided in Elasticsearch's Github repository, found at https://github.com/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-servicewrapper, then the conf file at elasticsearch-servicewrapper / service / elasticsearch.conf controls memory settings. At the top of elasticsearch.conf is a parameter:
set.default.ES_HEAP_SIZE=1024
Just reduce this parameter, say to "set.default.ES_HEAP_SIZE=512", to reduce Elasticsearch's allotted memory.
Note that if you use the elasticsearch-wrapper, the ES_HEAP_SIZE provided in elasticsearch.conf OVERRIDES ALL OTHER SETTINGS. This took me a bit to figure out, since from the documentation, it seemed that heap memory could be set from elasticsearch.yml.
If your service wrapper settings are set somewhere else, such as at /etc/default/elasticsearch as in James's example, then set the ES_HEAP_SIZE there.
If you installed ES using the RPM/DEB packages as provided (as you seem to have), you can adjust this by editing the init script (/etc/init.d/elasticsearch on RHEL/CentOS). If you have a look in the file you'll see a block with the following:
export ES_HEAP_SIZE
export ES_HEAP_NEWSIZE
export ES_DIRECT_SIZE
export ES_JAVA_OPTS
export JAVA_HOME
To adjust the size, simply change the ES_HEAP_SIZE line to the following:
export ES_HEAP_SIZE=xM/xG
(where x is the number of MB/GB of RAM that you would like to allocate)
Example:
export ES_HEAP_SIZE=1G
Would allocate 1GB.
Once you have edited the script, save and exit, then restart the service. You can check if it has been correctly set by running the following:
ps aux | grep elasticsearch
And checking for the -Xms and -Xmx flags in the java process that returns:
/usr/bin/java -Xms1G -Xmx1G

Elasticsearch will assign the entire heap specified in jvm.options via the Xms (minimum heap size) and Xmx (maximum heap size) settings.
-Xmx12g

Set the minimum heap size (Xms) and maximum heap size (Xmx) to be equal to each other.
Don’t set Xmx to above the cutoff that the JVM uses for compressed object pointers (compressed oops), the exact cutoff varies but is near 32 GB.
It is also possible to set the heap size via an environment variable
ES_JAVA_OPTS="-Xms2g -Xmx2g" ./bin/elasticsearch
ES_JAVA_OPTS="-Xms4000m -Xmx4000m" ./bin/elasticsearch
File path to change heap size /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options
If you are using nano then do sudo nano /etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options and update -Xms and -Xmx accordingly.
(You can use any file editor to edit it)
In elasticsearch path home dir i.e. typically /usr/share/elasticsearch,
There is a config file bin/elasticsearch.in.sh.
Edit parameter ES_MIN_MEM, ES_MAX_MEM in this file to change -Xms2g, -Xmx4g respectively.
And Please make sure you have restarted the node after this config change.
If you are using docker-compose to run a ES cluster:
Open <your docker compose>.yml file
If you have set the volumes property, you won't lose anything. Otherwise, you must first move the indexes.
Look for this value ES_JAVA_OPTS under environment and change the value in all nodes, the result could be somethig like "ES_JAVA_OPTS=-Xms2g -Xmx2g"
rebuild all nodes docker-compose -f <your docker compose>.yml up -d
Oneliner for Centos 7 & Elasticsearch 7 (2g = 2GB)

These configs mean you allocate 1GB RAM for elasticsearch service.
If you use ubuntu 15.04+ or any other distro that uses systemd, you can set the max memory size editing the elasticsearch systemd service and setting the max memory size using the ES_HEAP_SIZE environment variable, I tested it using ubuntu 20.04 and it works fine:
systemctl edit elasticsearch
Add the environement variable ES_HEAP_SIZE with the desired max memory, here 2GB as example:

Reload systemd daemon
systemd daemon-reload
Then restart elasticsearch

To check if it worked as expected:

Good Evening Everyone,
I have been trying to install a single stand alone instance (locally) of Elasticsearch 7.3 on my MAC Book Pro El Capitan (10.11.6, 4GB-Ram). I really thought this would be fairly straight forward but alas ES is having memory locking issues whilst being installed on my mac.
Details:
I downloaded, and have been attempting to install, Elasticsearch 7.3. It was downloaded from here: https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/getting-started-install.html
After extracting the archive I proceeded to follow instructions for installation, starting with running the binary executable - "./elasticsearch" - by running this command -->
cd elasticsearch-7.3.0/bin
./elasticsearch
Upon running said command I have repeatedly been getting this error -->
"1 bootstrap checks failed 1: memory locking requested for elasticsearch process but memory is not locked"
After conducting some research, I now realize that Elasticsearch is basically having problems enabling 'memory locking'. It is fully understood that elasticsearch does not like memory swapping and that "memory locking" needs to be enabled using the --> bootstrap.memory_lock: true command, however it seems to me that I have a case here, where this setting is being passed to Elasticsearch but Elasticsearch is not able to read said setting to lock memory (Java Heap) and complete the installation of my ES instance.
I have tried everything to try to enable "memory locking", to no avail. I have set the following config parameters in the following files:
A) I added the following lines to /etc/security/limits.conf file:
elasticsearch soft memlock unlimited
elasticsearch hard memlock unlimited
* - memlock unlimited
* - nofile 100000
* - nproc 32768
* - as unlimited
B) I added the following lines to the jvm.options file:
-Xms2g (initial size of total heap space, set to half of RAM)
-Xmx2g (maximum size of heap space, set to half of RAM)
-Des.enforce.bootstrap.checks=true (enforcing memory locking checks)
-Djna.tmpdir=chosenpath/elasticsearch-7.3.0/tmp (this seemed important)
C) I edited the following lines in the elasticsearch.yml file:
bootstrap.memory_lock: true
network.host: 0.0.0.0
http.port: 9200
D) I added the '/etc/launchd.conf' file (in trying to increase my max processes and max files available) and added the following lines:
limit maxproc 2048 2048
limit maxfiles 1024 unlimited
E) I added the '/etc/sysctl.conf' file (in trying to increase my max processes, and max processes available per user) and added the following lines:

F) My ulimit -as output has remained unchanged no matter what I do, and still gives me the following output:

But no matter what I try, I always get theses 2 errors:
A) "Unable to lock JVM Memory: error=78, reason=Function not implemented"
B) "ERROR: 1 bootstrap checks failed 1: memory locking requested for elasticsearch process but memory is not locked"
I have looked into maybe disabling memory swapping entirely on my mac, but decided that maybe that was too drastic an action, and would prefer that feature (memory locks, no swapping) to be invoked only when my ES is active. I also cannot seem to find anywhere where one can set LimitMEMLOCK=infinity because it seems that the concept of elasticsearch.service dose not exist as a part of installing ES on a MAC.
I thought installing ES would be as simple as editing the "Elasticsearch.yml" and "jvm.options" file and that would be it. Boy was I wrong.

So - I finally got ES 7.3 to install on my MAC (El Capitan).
I removed this entry from my jvm.options file:
-Des.enforce.bootstrap.checks=true
Somehow this did not cause ES to crap out when authenticating memory locking. Removing this parameter disables ES's ability to enforce bootstrap checks, even if "bootstrap.memory_lock: true" in elasticsearch.yml config file. Now all I have to figure out is how to add 2 additional nodes to this same ES instance, without getting this error:
uncaught exception in thread [main]
org.elasticsearch.bootstrap.StartupException: BindTransportException[Failed to bind to
[9300]]; nested: BindException[Address already in use]
Seems like i need to make some adjustments to my elasticsearch.yml file. current pertinent settings here:

Elastic search is occupying more than 25 GBs of RAM. Data that I gave for indexing to elastic search is around 1 GB. Why elastic search needs this much of space?
Whenever an Elastic Search starts with default settings it consumes about 1 GB RAM because of their heap space allocation defaults to 1GB setting.
Make sure to check the "jvm.options" File
For Ubuntu Linux OS :- {if installed using debian File}
File Location :- /etc/elasticsearch/
or
For Windows OS :-
File Location is the extracted folder Location
{extacted_folder_path/config/jvm.options}
Inside jvm.options file you need to configure some settings of JVM Heap
-Xms1g
-Xmx1g
-Xms1g is set to acquire 1 GB of initial RAM size whenever elastic search starts.
-Xmx1g defines the maximum allocation of RAM to Elastic Search JVM Heap.
You need to tune these two parameters to 4 GB or whatever suits your needs.
-Xms4g
-Xmx4g
Note :- Do not set more than 32 GB Java Heap Space it will not lead to any benefit.
From some reason "elasticsearch" used 53% of my 24G memory by default which is insane if you ask me. Maybe because it is auto configured as it stated in the text below. Anyway, to set custom JVM heap size, one should create a file "jvm.options" in jvm.options.d directory and add custom values as stated in default "jvm.options" file:

Then you should restart "elasticsearch" service and you can check the memory usage with:

I have a distributed Jmeter Master-Slave set up. On increasing the throughput to a higher number, I started getting OOM exception for heap space.
I found this post:
How to Increase Heap size
to increase the HEAP size in the jmeter.bat file (windows in my case). However for Jmeter slave machines we don't launch jmeter via jmeter.bat but rather via jmeter.server.bat file. I checked this file doesn't have any HEAP memory parameter.
Any suggestions on how to increase the Heap memory size on Slave instances?
Looking into jmeter-server.bat source code:
It respects JVM_ARGS environment variable
It calls jmeter.bat under the hood which in its turn respects HEAP environment variable
So given you're on Windows you can do something like:
set HEAP=-Xms1G -Xmx10G -XX:MaxMetaspaceSize=256M && jmeter-server.bat
and the JVM heap will be increased to 10 gigabytes for the slave instance.
Above instructions are applicable to JMeter 4.0, the behavior might differ on previous versions.
The command to start the Jmeter slaves looks like:
nohup java -jar "/bin/ApacheJMeter.jar" "-Djava.rmi.server.hostname=127.0.0.1" -Dserver_port=10000 -s -j jmeter-server.log > /dev/null 2>&1
So if you want to change Java parameters just pass it after java:
nohup java -Xms512m -Xmx512m -XX:+UseCMSInitiatingOccupancyOnly ...
I continue to get following error while trying to run elasticsearch on a SSD machine with 2GB RAM.
elasticsearch[1234] : # There is insufficient memory for the Java Runtime Environment to continue.
elasticsearch[1234] : # Native memory allocation (mmap) failed to map 1973026816 bytes for committing reserved memory.
I modified default config /etc/init.d/elasticsearch modified with following options
ES_JAVA_OPTS="-Xms1g -Xmx1g"

I restarted elasticsearch but I continue to get the same error.

You should set Xms and Xmx in the jvm.options file. (/etc/elasticsearch/jvm.options)
You can also use environment variables (ES_JAVA_OPTS="-Xms1g -Xmx1g"), but you need to comment out the settings in jvm.options for that to work.
PS: Assuming 5.x since you didn't specify the version.
I have created virtual box, ubuntu 14.04LTS environment on my mac machine.
In virtual box of ubuntu, I've created cluster of three lxc-containers. One for master and other two nodes for slaves.
On master, I have started installation of CDH5 using following link http://archive.cloudera.com/cm5/installer/latest/cloudera-manager-installer.bin
I have also made necessary changes in the /etc/hosts including FQDN and hostnames. Also created passwordless user named as "ubuntu".
While setting up the CDH5, during installation I'm constantly facing following error on datanodes. Max locked memory size: dfs.datanode.max.locked.memory of 922746880 bytes is more than the datanode's available RLIMIT_MEMLOCK ulimit of 65536 bytes.

This solution will be probably be late for you but maybe it can help somebody else so here it is. Make sure your ulimit is set correctly. But in case its a config issue.
goto:
/run/cloudera-scm-agent/process/
find latest config dir,
in this case:
1016-hdfs-DATANODE
search for parameter in this dir:
grep -rnw . -e "dfs.datanode.max.locked.memory"
./hdfs-site.xml:163: <name>dfs.datanode.max.locked.memory</name>
and edit the value to the one he is expecting in your case(65536)
I solved by opening a seperate tab in Cloudera and set the value from there
