In my magento store product category grid view, there are two sorting options by now, price and name. I'd like to add on more option: New products. I found tutorials and extensions for date added or date modified, but thats not what I need. Id like to use 'New from date' / 'New to date' to sort them.

You can use your attribute is new from the attribute frontend option. For that navigate to your attributes, go to your respective attribute and change the settings for: use for filtering in frontend. Then the attribute will be added in frontend for sorting, see the screenshot (sorry, just german):

I have developed my first Magento site and my client has asked me to do something I cannot

Currently, in any given category, the product Sort By dropdown contains the following options:
Position
Name
Price
I need to change that to:
Relevance
Popular
Price
How do I do this?
This is all to do with your attributes. Say you have an attribute in
Admin>Catalog>Attributes>Manage Attributes>[attribute like: 'name' etc>Properties>Frontend Properties>"Used for sorting in product listing".
you need to select Yes. Then once you have selected Yes in the attributes you want to sort by, go into
Admin>Catalog>Manage Categories>[Select your category you are displaying the drop down in]>Display Settings tab,
then select the Attributes you want to be sorted by in the Available Product Listing Sort By list. If the box is greyed out, untick the Use All Available Attributes checkbox. You may need to hold Ctrl and click on the attributes to select multiple values. Then Save.
Done
Looks like the product type with drop-down is Configurable Product. You can see these three options,
Position
Name
Price
You can locate these options under,
Catalog->Manage Products->Your_product->Associated Products->Super product attributes configuration
Also, you can directly update this into,
Relevance
Popular
Price
In case if these fields are missing, you can search for attributes named, Position||Name||Price.
You can locate the label,
Catalog->Attributes->Manage Attributes->Your_attribute->Manage Labels/Options.
I am using Magento for my online store. Now i need to add a extra feature, throught which, customer can choose a custom text that needs to be engraved on the product. This feature must be available for only few products, so i have added a yes/no dropdown custom attribute in the "manage product" section. If yes is chosen for a product, i need to show a text box in that product details page in the store frontend.
The customer can enter the custom text in the text box, which needs to be saved and shown in the order invoice. And a extra fixed charge needs to be added to the product price, when this feature is used by the customer.
Does any community module available for this feature in magento or Do i need to create a custom module to do this, if so please guide me in carrying this out.

This feature is already available.
Create a new product!
Open the Custom Options Tab
Add a custom option
Give your new option a title and select field as input type
Now the attributes for this new options get displayed
Add a fixed or percent price to it
Also you need a SKU for every new option so that the options are displayed in the order process (invoice etc)
Done
So if a customer fill in this field the additional price is added automatically.

No need to add a yes/no box, just add an text field option to those specific products. Did i miss something obvious here?
I have a large store with many products showing in multiple categories.
Inside each of these categories the product has a different use, so I would like to show a different image.
I would use a bundle / grouped product however the default simple product has custom options.
Any PHP or set up suggestions would be appreciated.
A clean implementation would be to add a new attribute to the media/gallery functionality (akin to label/sort-order).
Then you would add a drop-down category selector to the grid view on the "Manage Product > Edit Product > Images" tab.
Then from there, you could extend the standard collection for category/search to select your image with corresponding category ID (instead of the default selected thumbnail).
But you certainly are not going to find a 1-liner to pull this off (cleanly).
I have a typical condition in my magento Grouped product.
Is it possible to show Custom attribute (color dropdown) of associated product under Grouped products in the fronted.. as shown below

It's not clear your question but I would give you a small example to get text field, multiple select or drop-down listbox value.
First, we should load the product collection :

I have found a solution for this, 3 edited files.
But these files are edited for a previous version of Magento, I don't know which version.
I have uploaded this 3 files on my Magento 1.7 and it works but when add the product to the cart it give's a error with app/code/core/Mage/Sales/Model/Quote.php
This file: Quote.php is one of the edited files, when i upload the original Quote.php it works.

I am a noob with this, if someone can look at the edited files and chek how they have do this and compare this with the newest files for Magento 1.7 maybe we can help to many peoples with this problem.
We have a SOAP connection to magento that is working great - we're able to pull product info, skus, descriptions, etc. using the magento API. We've been able to successfully add products to the cart programmatically with custom options, and that works great. The problem is this:
When you create a custom option for a product, it is assigned a unique ID that has to be called in order to pass that option value to the cart. For example:
www.mysite.com/magento/checkout/cart/add?product=7&qty=1&options[OPTION ID]=robots
Assuming I have my custom option ID correct, this will add 1 product with the option "robots." Which is nice.
However, we have hundreds of products, and while they all use similar custom options, each option is given a unique ID. That means I need to be able to call the magento API and get custom options details (specifically the option ID) so that we can add them to the cart properly. I have been back and forth with Varien Support (Magento), but they are less than helpful, as usual. Now, I know I can find these options by using firebug in Firefox or Chrome, which I've done to test the "add to cart" script. However, that's not a proper solution. I need to be able to grab this data from magento based on product id.
Can this really be that hard? Shouldn't this be tied to the data for the product somehow? I've done a var_dump on the catalog_product.info and i see where it asks if there are options but doesn't provide any details on them. Thoughts?

Do you need to get all options ids for specific products or just some particular? For the latter you can use this code:
