I'd like to grep the output of ifconfig in bash - bash

I'm making a small script to determine if I have an internet connection on OSX. More of just practice, I suppose.
In terminal "ifconfig | grep -cs 'status: active' " will return 1 if there's at least one active connection
The script I have is this

echo "Offline"

However the Variable ONLINE always returns 0.
From what I can tell/understand, this has to do with using a pipe inside of the script. A sub-pipe is used when running the command, and ONLINE just gets stuck with 0 as the sub-pipe closes.
I think I see the issue, but I don't know how to get around this. I saw a bunch of work arounds for scripts having this issue with while loops, but nothing where I need the output from ifconfig fed into grep.

Several problems with your current script:
You set a variable ONLINE, but you test for detect.
You don't actually assign the result of the ifconfig | grep -cs 'status: active' command to the variable ONLINE
You use = instead of == to test for equality
The following would seem to be closer to what you intended:

ONLINE=$(ifconfig | grep -cs 'status: active')
if [[ $ONLINE == 1 ]]

echo "online"

echo "offline"

use this:
ONLINE=$(ifconfig | grep -cs 'status: active')
cause without "$" what bash will return is the result of the command being successful or not and if it is successful it is always zero.

Or you can just keep it simple like this ...
ifconfig | grep 'status: active' > /dev/null 2>&1
if [ $? == 0 ]
then
echo "online"
else
echo "offline"
fi

As none of the answers explain the exact issue with your script, I'm adding an answer.
The issue lies with the line ONLINE=ifconfig | grep -cs 'status: active'.
What is wrong is that there is no command substitution ($(...) or `...`) used in the line. As correctly suggested by other answers as well, the assignment needs to be $(ONLINE=ifconfig | grep -cs 'status: active').
What this line actually does is that it assigns the string "ifconfig" to the variable ONLINE and pipes the output of that (no output in this case) through grep -cs ...
One point to note is that this assignment is only for the duration of that line, and does not survive till the next line. To illustrate:
samveen#precise:~$ I=0
samveen#precise:~$ echo $I
0
samveen#precise:~$ I=1 | echo "blank"
blank
samveen#precise:~$ echo $I
0
Edit: I totally missed another very important point: Subroutines do not return values in bash, just exit status
Thus capturing variables from subroutine calls needs the subroutine to echo it's expected return value and it's call needs an assignment with command substitution.
Something like this:
detect(){
ONLINE=$(ifconfig | grep -cs 'status: active')
echo $ONLINE
}
if [[ $(detect) -eq 1 ]]
then
echo "Online"
else
echo "Offline"
fi
Also, use -eq to test numeric equality.
Finally, the shortest way to do what you want is
ifconfig | grep -q 'status:active' && echo "online" || echo "offline"

ps command in sh script not include the top command

I have written a script to check process is running or not,it work fine but while testing it, i have found that it not include top command count running in other terminal

And i run top command in two terminals and run this script as follow:

and out put is 0 CRITICAL , but when i run normal command ps -ef |grep -v "grep "| wc -l it gives two counts.
That mess of greps just has to go.
One "trick" for finding processes by name without finding your grep is to use a regular expression. That is, after all, what the Global Regular Expression Print command is for. You can use parameter expansion to construct a safe regular expression based on your input string, perhaps like this:

There are a few notable changes here:
I added something to fail with better explanation if no option is given.
The pipeline, of course. And the lines that create $re.
We're using -gt and -eq to test numeric values. man test for details.
I renamed your count variable to be clearer. What is a "PROCESS_NUM" really? Sounds like a PID to me.
All variables are quoted. I don't need to tell you why, you have the Google.
That said, you should also consider using pgrep instead of any sort of counting pipe, if it's available on your system. Try running pgrep and see what your OS tells you.

Variable scope in Bash [duplicate]

Please explain to me why the very last echo statement is blank? I expect that XCODE is incremented in the while loop to a value of 1:

Because you're piping into the while loop, a sub-shell is created to run the while loop.
Now this child process has its own copy of the environment and can't pass any
variables back to its parent (as in any unix process).
Therefore you'll need to restructure so that you're not piping into the loop.
Alternatively you could run in a function, for example, and echo the value you
want returned from the sub-process.

The problem is that processes put together with a pipe are executed in subshells (and therefore have their own environment). Whatever happens within the while does not affect anything outside of the pipe.
Your specific example can be solved by rewriting the pipe to
while ... do ... done <<< "$OUTPUT"
or perhaps
while ... do ... done < <(echo "$OUTPUT")
This should work as well (because echo and while are in same subshell):

I got around this when I was making my own little du:
ls -l | sed '/total/d ; s/ */\t/g' | cut -f 5 |

The point is that I make a subshell with ( ) containing my SUM variable and the while, but I pipe into the whole ( ) instead of into the while itself, which avoids the gotcha.

How to access the bash PIPESTATUS array of an eval'd command?

I have this code:

I don't have it, because when bash runs a command with eval, as in
eval "ifconfiggg | wc -l"
the $PIPESTATUS[#] array just contains "0" instead of the expected "1 0".
How can I fix this?
The eval starts a new shell context which has a separate PIPESTATUS[] array. The lifetime of this context ends when the eval ends. You can communicate this array to the parent context through assigning to a variable, say, PIPE as follows:
$ eval 'ifconfiggg | wc -l; PIPE=${PIPESTATUS[#]}'
bash: ifconfiggg: command not found
0
$ echo $PIPE
127 0
Note the single quotes to prevent ${PIPESTATUS[#]} from expanding too early.
Wrapping this in yet another result=$(...) does not work, since this creates yet another shell context. I suggest instead something along the lines of
eval "${1}; "'PIPE=${PIPESTATUS[#]}' >result.out 2>result.err
# do something with $PIPE here
# do something with result.out or result.err here
Note the use of both double quotes followed by single quotes.
Thanks #Jens for posting this information. I noticed for
eval "${1}; "'PIPE=${PIPESTATUS[#]}' >result.out 2>result.err
that it's better to use parentheses around array PIPESTATUS. Otherwise it seems to be interpreted as string and the complete result is in ${PIPESTATUS[0]} only. So
eval "${1}; "'PIPE=(${PIPESTATUS[#]})' >result.out 2>result.err
is working as expected.

How to make "if not true condition"?

I would like to have the echo command executed when cat /etc/passwd | grep "sysa" is not true.
What am I doing wrong?

grep returns true if it finds the search target, and false if it doesn't.
So NOT false (! false) == true.
if evaluation in shells are designed to be very flexible, and many times doesn't require chains of commands (as you have written).
Also, looking at your code as is, your use of the $( ... ) form of cmd-substitution is to be commended, but think about what is coming out of the process. Try echo $(cat /etc/passwd | grep "sysa") to see what I mean. You can take that further by using the -c (count) option to grep and then do if ! [ $(grep -c "sysa" /etc/passwd) -eq 0 ] ; then which works but is rather old school.
BUT, you could use the newest shell features (arithmetic evaluation) like
if ! (( $(grep -c "sysa" /etc/passwd) == 0 )) ; then ...`
which also gives you the benefit of using the c-lang based comparison operators, ==,<,>,>=,<=,% and maybe a few others.
In this case, per a comment by Orwellophile, the arithmetic evaluation can be pared down even further, like
if ! (( $(grep -c "sysa" /etc/passwd) )) ; then ....
OR
if (( ! $(grep -c "sysa" /etc/passwd) )) ; then ....
Finally, there is an award called the Useless Use of Cat (UUOC). :-) Some people will jump up and down and cry gothca! I'll just say that grep can take a file name on its cmd-line, so why invoke extra processes and pipe constructions when you don't have to? ;-)

What am I doing wrong?
$(...) holds the value, not the exit status, that is why this approach is wrong. However, in this specific case, it does indeed work because sysa will be printed which makes the test statement come true. However, if ! [ $(true) ]; then echo false; fi would always print false because the true command does not write anything to stdout (even though the exit code is 0). That is why it needs to be rephrased to if ! grep ...; then.
An alternative would be cat /etc/passwd | grep "sysa" || echo error. Edit: As Alex pointed out, cat is useless here: grep "sysa" /etc/passwd || echo error.
Found the other answers rather confusing, hope this helps someone.

FYI, using &>/dev/null redirects all output from the command, including errors, to /dev/null
(The conditional only requires the exit status of the ping command)
Also FYI, note that since cron jobs run as root there is no need to use sudo ping in a cron script.

On Unix systems that supports it (not macOS it seems):

This has the advantage that it will query any directory service that may be in use (YP/NIS or LDAP etc.) and the local password database file.
The issue with grep -q "$username" /etc/passwd is that it will give a false positive when there is no such user, but something else matches the pattern. This could happen if there is a partial or exact match somewhere else in the file.
For example, in my passwd file, there is a line saying
build:*:21:21:base and xenocara build:/var/empty:/bin/ksh
This would provoke a valid match on things like cara and enoc etc., even though there are no such users on my system.
For a grep solution to be correct, you will need to properly parse the /etc/passwd file:

... or any other similar test against the first of the :-delimited fields.
