changing the path of make install - makefile

I am installing a library using its own CMakeLists.txt file and I accidently set the option CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX to a different directory than what I had intended. I already ran make and I know running make install will cause the library files to be installed in the wrong directory. To solve this problem I can simply rerun cmake with the correct CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX, run make and then run make install but that requires the library to be rebuilt again which takes some time. Is there a quick way to fix this where I can simply change the target directory of make install

make install can't find aclocal

I'm trying to compile a code to run in parallel on a supercomputer. I know that others have compiled this code to run on the same computer, but for some reason I am having trouble even when using the same methodology as them. For now I'm just trying to compile the code to run in serial as that should be easier to troubleshoot.
configure seems to work correctly.
However make install returns the following:

aclocal is indeed not located at /usr/local/share/aclocal, it is located at /usr/bin/aclocal - but as /usr/bin is in my path, I don't understand why the location is an issue.
As has been made clear in comments on the question, the problem was that the project sources were copied onto the target system in a way that failed to preserve their original timestamps. The Autotools, through make, use file timestamps to determine which files are out of date, and in particular, Autools-generated Makefiles contain rules for rebuilding the build system itself that can be triggered this way.
It is not ordinarily necessary or desirable to rebuild an Autotools project's build system, except in conjunction with actually performing maintenance on it. It is often the case, in fact, that the necessary support for that is not available locally. To avoid the build system thinking that it needs to rebuild itself, it is important to preserve the file timestamps from the distribution archive. For some packages, it also works to pass the --disable-maintainer-mode argument to the configure script, but by no means do all Autotools configure scripts support that.
The archive extraction tools for the typical archive formats in which Autotools-based packages are distributed do, by default, preserve timestamps when unpacking, so the ordinary procedure of
unpack the archive on the target system (e.g. tar xzf foo-1.2.3.tar.gz)
change to the unpacked source directory (e.g. cd foo-1.2.3)
configure; make; make install
normally does the right thing. Substituting something else for (1), however, such as copying the unpacked source tree from somewhere else, may cause the package to think it needs to rebuild the build system. If that works correctly then it's no big deal, but it is not uncommon that it doesn't. That's what happened here, and following the standard procedure described above solved the problem.

Missing dynamic (.so) library in fftw 2.1.5 installation

I am trying to run simulations using Gadget2, an astrophysics N-body simulation package. It requires a few libraries, including fftw-2.1.5. I have installed fftw using the guidelines given in the user manual:
./configure --prefix=<PATH> --enable-typeprefix --enable-mpi
make
make install
make clean
./configure --prefix=<PATH> --enable-float--enable-type-prefix --enable-mpi
make
make install
The two makes are to get both single and double precision files according to this source. The install happened successfully, and I was also able to compile Gadget2.
But when I try to run Gadget2, I get the following error:
./Gadget2: error while loading shared libraries: libsrfftw_mpi.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
The file libsrfftw_mpi.so.2 is missing in the fftw lib folder, even though a few download sites for fftw packages say that it is part of the contents. What am I missing?
Specify the below and run your command again.
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<PATH from your install command>
also don't forget to additionally specify --enable-shared for both configure commands.

cygwin doesn't execute make

I am very new to cygwin and recently installed it because I need to compile some fortran files. I installed all libraries (and its dependencies) I need, but when I execute make to run the makefile, nothing is happening:

No error, no nothing. When I directly execute the file contained in the makefile: same result. All files required are contained in my folder where I run make. However, the package seems to be installed just fine when I call where make or which make. I reinstalled everything multiple times, but still nothing is happening. I then tried to bind the MinGW make so I can use it in cygwin and by calling this version of make, I receive the error I'd expect:
user#PC1 ~
$ mymake
C:\mingw\bin\mingw32-make.exe: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
Unfortunately, I need the make-package from cygwin itself to work, but I have no idea what's going on. Any hints? Calling make.exe doesn't work either.
Update: I just installed cygwin and all required packages on my laptop and there everything works as intended...no problems in runing make.
I had the same problem and managed to fix this following those steps:
Open the cygwin setup and completely uninstall make (reinstalling failed for me). If you haven't deleted the download folder yet, you can select "Install from Local Directory" to make things faster.
Once uninstalled, re-run the setup again and check make, install the dependencies if needed.
Tested with make version 4.2.1-1 on my system, and got it working again.

How to build a package from source?

I'm working on a Windows 7 computer at work and want to use the libpostal package. Unfortunately, it's apparently not available for Windows, so I'm trying to configure it through Cygwin and I'm SO close. The last step is to install snappy from Google. Again, not available on Windows...
My assumption (based on nothing) is that I can just download the tarball and build it from source, right? I tried that, and I think it worked? But a) I don't know how to tell, and b) if it did, I don't know how to tell ./configure in libpostal to find it.
In order to build it from source, I downloaded the tarball and saved it in the folder that Cygwin reads as my home, which is C:\cygwin64\home\brittenb\. From there, I ran bash autogen.sh, which created the ./configure that I needed. So I ran that and while some responses to the checks were no, it seemed to run fine. I then ran make and make install. Nothing seemed out of place, so my assumption is that it did what it was supposed to do. I just have no idea where to go from here.

So... my question: did it work? Why does ./configure in libpostal say it can't find snappy? Thanks in advance.
The snappy dependency has been removed as of release 1.0.0. I made changes to the source and make and config so that it will build on MinGW.

Note that this is not the complete source since not everything had to be changed. I would suggest merging my changes with the official libpostal distribution to make sure you've got everything. Also, there are some extra DLLEXPORTs in some source files that I haven't removed yet, and the part in the Makefile that builds the executables like address_parser.exe was removed because some porting is necessary to build those programs on Windows. You can write your own using the DLL you'll get in the Windows build and the original source as a reference.
Check the return code from make install ($?). If it is zero, make install succeeded.
snappy looks like a library, so maybe it doesn't install anything in /usr/local/bin. The library is probably installed into /usr/local/lib.

configure command not found cygwin

This question has been asked many time but I am not able to resolve the problem from them so I am asking
I had installed Cygwin a few days ago.I tried using ./configure command but it says
-bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
I tried using
where configure
but I got the output
INFO: Could not find files for the given pattern(s).
then I tried grep configureand I got this output

I tried to export the path and then run the ./configure but it also didn't worked.
I find no executable file named as configure in my cygwin bin directory.
Does it mean that I have to add configure file manually?How can I correct it?

If a software project is set up to be built using autoconf, that tool generates a script canonically called configure. It queries the system for various parameters that are subsequently used in the build, and is specific to the software package to be built. Different software projects have different configure scripts. They are all called configure, but their contents are not the same.
So, to actually build such a software project once that script was set up (usually done by the maintainers when packaging the source tarball for distribution), you call:
tar xzf <tarball>.gz # or xjf <tarball>.bz2 or whatever
cd <sourcedir> # the one you just untarred
./configure
make
make install
Note the prefix ./, which means "located in this directory" (i.e. the top directory of that project's source tree).
Actually, the better procedure is the so-called "out-of-tree build", when you set up a different directory for the binaries to be built in, so the source tree remains unmodified:
tar xzf <tarball>.gz # or xjf <tarball>.bz2 or whatever
mkdir builddir
cd builddir
../<sourcedir>/configure
make
make install
So, there is supposed to be no configure executable in your PATH, you are supposed to call the script of that name from the source tree you are trying to build from.
If I correctly understood...
Configure is not an application that should be installed on your system, but script that should be delivered with source code to prepare for make command. File named configure should be in the main directory of source code.
I understand that this is an old question. However many might find this solution helpful.
Normally we use the make command to compile a downloaded source in cygwin. In many cases it contains a autogen.sh file. Running that file with
bash autogen.sh
will in many case solve the problem. At least it solved my issue and i could then use the make command
