I've been using VS 2013 and notice that I do not get a toast notification when new extension updates are available. We had this in VS 2012. Is anyone else seeing this or know how to get notifications without having to go check for them manually by clicking the updates node in the extensions gallery?
The notifications have been moved to the Notifications Hub. Click the little flag by the Quick Launch box in the upper right-hand corner.

I recently applied an update to Visual Studio Community 2022 (64-bit).
Current Version is 17.3.4
We still use Web Deploy for some legacy asp.net sites and the Web Publish Activity window is very useful for switching between dev and production environments.
After a recent Visual Studio upgrade I noticed that the Web Publish Activity window was not visible, so I reopened it via View -> Other Windows... and it appeared as expected in the lower window, as a new tab along with Output and Error List.
But after closing my project and reopening it, the Web Publish Activity window is missing again. I tested other windows like PowerShell and Bookmark Window and they ARE maintained after closing and reopening VS.
I also tried saving a new window layout with the Web Publish Activity window open and then reapplying that layout after a VS restart but that had no affect.
It is very annoying to have to go though multiple levels of the View menu to reopen this window every time I open this project.
Does anyone have any advice on how to keep this window locked/pinned?
Is Microsoft trying to "encourage" me to stop using this window?
If there is another way to quickly change between publish profiles that would be acceptable as well, but I cannot find one.
Thank you.
This may be a bug with this particular window (the fact that it doesn't stay pinned after closing Visual Studio that is).
Perhaps as a decent workaround you can at least assign a keyboard shortcut to open this window:
Go to Options → Environment → Keyboard
Filter down to "View.WebPublishAcitvity" or find it in the list
Create a keyboard shortcut of your liking by typing it in the circled red box and then click the Assign button:
After doing that, you should be able to use that shortcut to open the window much faster at least.
Using Visual Studio Community Edition 2019 to create BI Cube. Just installed that latest Microsoft.DataTools.AnalysisServices add on. The Wizards for both adding a Data Source and for adding a Data Source View both start with a welcome screen that occludes the input fields and they won't go away, so I can't enter information. They both have a check box that says "don't show again", but that does not help, they continue to show, even after I click thru taking all the defaults, save the project, and restart it.
See image.
MS actaully got back to me quickly, on a Sunday! thank you Patrick.
"One thing we’ve noticed is that for VS 2019, sometimes you can get a better experience by following this trick:
“Navigate to Tools in the Menu bar, then click ‘Options’. Next, under the Environment tab click ‘General’ and uncheck the option 'Optimize rendering for screens with different pixel densities'.”
That disables a newer PMA (Per-Monitor-Awareness) feature of Visual Studio that our extension hasn’t yet been updated to take account of.
Is there are a way to disable all notifications in Visual Studio Community 2017?
I mean all of them, I never want to see that flag nagging me ever again.
This Visual Studio extension Hide Notifications Flag (by Michal Žůrek) will hide the notifications flag.
After installing this extension Visual Studio will not show
notifications flag in header next to feedback button. Notification
window with list of updates available will be still available in View > Notifications.
This is useful if you do not want to install some updates and the
distinctive color of the background of the flag distracts you from
working.
One may use a network monitor and firewall to disable access to all Microsoft servers... Provided you need to use network capabilities in the program at all (I do). If you don't need network, just block Visual Studio in Windows Firewall
I have an extension to Hide Sign in and Feedback buttons. To hide the notifications icon instead of the feedback icon, just change GetChild(o3, 1) to GetChild(o3, 0).
Right click on the Visual Studio notification in the Notifications window and click "Always Ignore"
Left-click on the ReSharper "Pencil and paper icon" in the bottom-right corner and choose "Dismiss all notifications"
Is there a way to disable the Web Publish Activity window in Visual Studio 2013?
I couldn't find any options to disable that feature.
I have no directly solution for it. But I found workaroud: I tab it to the right sidebar and set autohide for it. So, now this window take minimum screen place and isn't shown during every publish:
If you click the little x in the Web Publish Activity window, it will go away!
I had the same problem on Visual Studio 2017.
Mine was over everything every time and completely unreactive. Not even its close button worked.
The way I get rid of it was: menu Window > Reset Window Layout
Hi I have been working with visual studio 2010 ultimate all day developing an asp.net webforms application.
I just realized that on the properties for controls window the button for events is missing , the one that looks like a thunderbolt.
An hour ago that button was there and now somehow it has disapeared and I can't figure out how to make it visible again.
I have tryed reseting the visual studio settings and reseting the computer but nothing worked
How can I get the button back?
I had the same problem. This helped me.
1.Restart visual studio 2010.
2.Click and select a control in markup page(.aspx)(like
3.After selecting , Click "View" in menu and select "Property window".
Check the property box, Thunderbolt ll be available. It just happened for me!
If the above solution not working go on with this!
1.Select design view in markup(.aspx)
2.Select any individual control like a button or label..
3.Now, you will be able to see a ">" button on the right side? Click it.
4.Remember to select only one control./.now check your property window! Whoohoo..
Actually while the solution above works, it puts you through more steps than you need. You can resolve this famous disappearing thunderbolt by simply clicking on Design view, and then clicking back on Source view, then clicking again to select the control in source view.
The Thunderbolt icon and events for the control will magically reappear.
You do not need to restart Visual Studio, and you do not need to select anything while in Design view.
And now, for my RANT about this annoying bug:
Even though this is easy to resolve, it is a MAJOR inconvenience to developers in my opinion, because we have to do this silly workaround all the freaking time.
This is in fact a BUG in Visual Studio. It has existed since at least Visual Studio 2010 (many users have reported it here and in MS forums across this and all later versions of VS). I have confirmed that this bug still exists in the latest build of Visual Studio 2022. So clearly MS has no plans to fix it.
[Rant Mode Off]
