How do I add an app icon on xcode? I tried using an image from google saved it onto my desktop and carry dropped it on the app icon, however this didn't work.
The icon is obviously used for the home screen, and the launch image is displayed when the app loads. Because you need to provide support for both Retina Display (4 and higher) and standard (3GS and lower), the files should be according the following specifications:
Standard icon 57 × 57, named Icon.png
Retina Display icon 114 × 114, named Icon#2x.png
Standard launch image 320 × 480, named Default.png
Retina Display launch image 640 × 960, named Default#2x.png
After you have these created according these standard size and naming conventions, replace the canned files that PhoneGap already added by overwriting them in your project folder.
Images.xcassets/AppIcon.appiconset
Add the .png file to your Images.xcassets/AppIcon.appiconset
You need to observe the file format, jpg's are mostly used.
Also you need to observe the correct dimensions of the image, if you hover over the icon's placeholder, you see for e.g. iPhone/iPod non-retina 57x57 pixels. In a graphic editor you can change the canvas size.
Try the asset catalog, this will help organize all your images and icons.

I am creating an application that I would like to run on Android and iOS devices with different screen sizes.
What size image do I need to use and where should I put this so that it shows as a thumbnail when the application is installed on the device before the application starts to run? In other words the image that a user clicks to start the application.
Also how can I get the best quality image. Should I use a png, jpg or is there another type of image that could be used? Any hints on creating this image would be much appreciated.
What you want is called App Icon, there are a lot of questions about this on SO and Xamarin docs.
iOS
Open Assets.xcassets under iOS project
If there isn't and AppIcon image set created, right click some empty place on the left white area and create a new AppIcon set, then click the AppIcon and just drag and drop the differents images size (you can see all the sizes the app need)
Finally open the Info.plist file and choose AppIcon as Source for App Icons
That should be enough for iOS App Icon, you can check this for more info: Application Icons in Xamarin.iOS
Android
For Android you would need to create icons with different sizes:
hdpi=281*164
mdpi=188*110
xhdpi=375*219
xxhdpi=563*329
xxxhdpi=750*438
48 × 48 (mdpi)
72 × 72 (hdpi)
96 × 96 (xhdpi)
144 × 144 (xxhdpi)
192 × 192 (xxxhdpi)
512 × 512 (Google Play store)
Then check if under Resources folder on the Android project are some folders named mipmap-(size), if not create like below:
Then place the icons in the corresponding folder with their size.
Next you want to do is set the icon on the Android Manifest, so right click on the Android project and open Properties, then on Android Manifest tab (VS for Windows) or Android Application (VS for Mac) choose your icon, so it should look like #mipmap/MyIcon and on your Main Launcher Activity set the icon like Icon = "#mipmap/MyIcon".
All images should be png type.
When I select my app in Finder using the columns display, the app icon displayed in the rightmost pane has all areas where alpha != 1 rendered in black.
Screenshot showing alpha!=1 areas in black
However you can see the the icon in the middle pane is rendered correctly. Also if I view the app's .icns file in Finder it is rendered correctly:

The icon is also rendered correctly in the Dock and in Launchpad.
Why does Finder render black in this one case?
macOS Sierra 10.12.5 but I doubt the issue is specific to this version.
I have spent almost a day hunting for solutions on the net but have not found anything even remotely close to this problem. No other app exhibits this issue. I have also tried to find an application that will let me view the details of each image of a working application's .icns file. Again without success.
Make a new .icns file using Image2Icon instead of Axialis IconWorkshop.
Following I'L'I's suggestion I examined the icon file with Preview. Preview shows that the 512x512 & 72x72 sizes do not have an alpha channel and have a black background where alpha != 1 in the 1024x1024 and other images that do have alpha. There are other strange images, including gray scale.
The .icns file was created for me by the icon designer using Axialis IconWorkshop. I do not have this software so do not know if the strangeness is cockpit error or application bugs.
I made a new .icns file from the same input PNG file using Image2Icon. In this file, all sizes have alpha and there are no strange images. Using this file, the display in Finder is correct.
I want to set an icon for my program (exe file and desktop shortcut). I am using Qt 5.7 on Windows.
I followed the instructions from: http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/appicon.html, that is in the pro file I put "RC_ICONS = logo7.ico".
When I install the program on my computer (Win8), it works well. The desktop shortcut's icon shows my logo perfectly and full size. However, when I install the program on another computer (Win10), the desktop shortcut's icon is not full size. Even if I CTRL-scroll on the desktop to change the icon size, this icon remains the same size.
Here is an example of two desktop icons (one full and the other one that does not scale).

Is there something special I should do with my icon (I tried icon sizes of 128x128 to 512x512) so that its full screen ?
Or is it something to do in Qt ?
Thank you so much !
Alex
Most windows 10 .ico icons are multi layer files instead of them being truly scalable. Akin to animated gifs but no animation, just layers. Open a .ico file in Gimp Image editor, you'll see the different sizes in layers. Here is a quick link to the Windows Media center icon hosted on icon archive: http://www.iconarchive.com/show/mega-pack-2-icons-by-ncrow/Windows-Media-Center-icon.html
attached is a screen shot of what I am talking about:

you could use it as a template and replace their pic with yours
I keep getting this warning that says the size of the images are wrong and I know there right. I set one of them to 180x180 and put it in the 3x 60 pt iPhone App IOS 7,8 and it says "the size of the image is 196x193 but should be 180x180." Why does this happen?
The image is the wrong size.
To verify the actual size of the image right-click "Get Info" on the image file in the finder.
The image needs to be scalled in an image editing program, I use Graphic Converter. There are other graphic programs which will also work.
I'm confused now. When I checked the developer homepage of apple I found certain dimensions for icons (such as 29x29,57x57,58x58) etc. I hired a friend of mine to make these icons and launch images. However when I go now to project settings in Xcode I find only the dimensions 120x120 for an icon (and only retina).
So my questions:
1. Where do I set my icons, launch images (duration of launch image) etc. correctly?
2. What are now really the dimensions needed? I'm confused since I have now obviously all wrong image sizes...
these are the images that you need, Xcode 5 in "general" you can insert all image, or you can use Asset Catalog, anyway the size of the icons are as follows::
