JOOMLA Read Private Message in URL Bug - joomla

I am building a new website in Joomla 3 and here is some really weird behavior i just stumbled over…
I get a wrong URL in Menu Items and read more links, saying, e.g
website.de/weOffer/drinks/Read%20Private%20Message/beer.
I would give you a real URL, but the project is still under development and classified.
The /Read%20Private%20Message/ part in the URL obviously does not belong there and gets inserted by joomla by default. The result of course is fatal. Not only the menu items aren't working, the read more links aren't either, all leading to 404 errors !
To go into more detail, here is what i have set up and what i have found out so far.
I have made a category blog, where articles are listed, each with a read more link in it, which works as expected.
Now each full text article should have its own slideshow and a couple of other modules, like a facts box in it.
Thats why, the article itself must show up as a menu item as well, so in the module manager i can select, that a specific slideshow module is used in this specific article only.
Therefore i have created menu items with the type of single article that links to the defined Article.
The main menu represents the page tree, each category blog has links to single articles as children. Some cat blog have cat blogs as children and then articles.
This setup works as expected, as long as i don't set the article menu item as a child of the category blog of the category the article itself belongs to.
Example:
MENU =
we offer(catblog) -> drinks(catblog) -> beer(singlearticle)
ARTICLEMANAGER
beer(category: drinks)
RESULT: wrong URL as above.
I can fix the error, by using rebuild in the menu manager, but thats only half way done. The menu URL is getting fixed, but than i have to go into the article itself, remove the read more and insert it back again, because the read private message doesnt get removed, even when i clear my cache. When i am done re-saving the readmore link, everything works like normal, until i save the article menu item the next time. Read Private Message bug is back again, up for another round.
I am a SuperUser, so i suspect i have all rights possible in joomla...
This must have something to do with Search engine friendly URLS (SEF), since it only occurs when i have SEF and mod rewrite turned on. I am using the default .htaccess file without any changes.
Here are some people with a similar problem, but no satisfying solution is given:
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?t=802045
http://www.jevents.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19620
I have read about migration and update errors, leading to the same problem.
I migrated manually (sql backup, change of some path in config file) from local apache to 1&1 apache server, both running PHP 5.4, so i doubt that this is a migration issue Plus the problem also appears when i create new articles and menu items (under the parent category).
Changing aliases in both menu items and article itself does not have any effect.
I really hope somebody could give me a hint, or maybe even just confirm that this is a bug If this is designed behavior than whats the reason for it ?.
I am quite frustrated about it and i don't have that many options left since:
1. SEF is a MUST (to my client)
2. Changing the menu tree structure, so that the linked items are no longer children of their cat block parent destroys my breadcrumbs.
3. rebuild and change every menu item and article manually 2 to 3 times is time consuming, error prone, annoying and i don#t want to sell a product to a client like this, since they want to maintain it for themselves as far as posiible.
Your help is really appreciated !
Greets paad.

Comic navigation in joomla?

I have a joomla site and would like to integrate some old unfinished webcomics to it, so I can pick them up where I stopped in a CMS that won't leave me in an absolute frothing rage (thanks, wordpress).
I've got some experience with Joomla and I believe it would be a pretty good platform for managing multiple comics... except for the small issue of horrid navigation between pages/articles. Joomla's integrated article navigation is a humble but passable start, but if you intend to use categories to organize chapters then getting from the end of one to the beginning of the next is... yeah. This is a pity, as Joomla's category and article management options are beautiful for archiving and presentation, and adding gantry 5 to it means a great deal of control over the reading experience. Basically, joomla has pretty much everything I want, except for the navigation.
Ideally, what I'd like to be able to accomplish for comic navigation in joomla is:
Clickable full-article-image leading to next article/page
Prev/next article buttons (already available)
Prev/next category buttons (do we have those?)
The latter two in a module I can choose where to publish (optional)
And this is it, basically. I understand that implementing the first could be very hard without some major template customization, in which case I'd be willing to insert the image as a link in the article body... but only if there was one single code I could use, like the one that generates the next category article button. Because I'm not willing to create hundreds of menu items to generate links page-by-page.
So is any of this doable?
This is a quick answer but too much for a comment. I'm assuming since you are on SO that you don't mind coding (as opposed to just configuring).
I think you need to do two things. First you need to create a pagination.php for your template. This will let you really super control what the pagination looks like. You can have images, special css and js, whatever you want. You can also add the "last" and "first" options.
I think you need to make a new plugin to replace the core pagenavigation plugin and that also generates the previous/next category links. (Or I guess you could make one just to do categorynavigation depending on what you want.) HOWEVER, it seems to me that there is data on the sibling links that is already being generated in the content category model so you might be able to use that. (Check the code; I think there was never a UI for it, but it is there. Even if it isn't there, siblings are very easy to obtain in nested sets)
The other thing you can really think about if you go that route is changing the whole thing somewhat to use a module that gets the current ID and category ID from JInput. You might also be able to use JPagination. The important thing, however is that you make sure to do the caching the way the pagination that is there does it. In other words you really want to cache the whole list in the order you want so you are not running so many queries and slowing your site down. You may want to look at the categories and category modules to get some ideas about the queries to do.
Hope that gets you started, but it is definitely something you can do without too much trouble.

Magento move search result

For some reason when somebody performs a search on my site the search results do not display underneath the search box, they appear on the far left of the screen.
Any ideas of what file this would be configured in?
Let me correct myself it's not the search results but the search suggestions
I can't offer a direct solution to your problem, but turning on template hints might point you in the right direction. In the Admin, go to System > Configuration, Select your store view from the scope drop down at the top left. Unless you're running multi-store, or have changed the name of the default store it'll be called "Default Store View". Then scroll down to "Developer" and open up the "Debug" section. Turn on both Template Path Hints" and "Add Block Names to Hints". This will add a div with a red border around each template in your layout and a heading which includes the name of the template. It will liklely completely screw up your page layout, but will show you which template generated every tag on the page and help you track down the issue.
The DeveloperToolbar extension makes turning this on/off quickly much easier, but I wouldn't recommend deploying it to a production site.
Alan Storm's indispensable CommerceBug is another tool which is very handly for tracking down front end issues. CommerdeBug can show you the layout handles and the aggregate layout XML used to generate the current page. Both of which are useful for determing why a specific block was (or wasn't) included.
So in case anybody else runs into this or wants to move where their search suggestions display it is in styles.css under .searchautocomplete.

Best Way to Modify Another Programmer's Navigation

"Change an item in the navigation? Sure I can do that in 15 minutes."
So I am trying to update the navigation on a site that I inherited only to find out that the previous programmer was a college student and was using this site as a project of some sort. Needless to say there are zero comments and the code calls function after function and I just can't follow the logic.
I am looking for a roundabout way to update the navigation. I tried using Dreamweaver to search through all of the files in the site and look for any files that contain the name of the page or the url (hoping to find some sort of included file). There was none. I did file text files that control the main navigation but none for the subnavigation.
There is no database.
If it helps here is the site. http://bit.ly/jbs639
And if you want to look at the interesting text file that is parsed to create the main navigation you can find it here: http://bit.ly/m3erna
Hmmm.... Interesting indeed. You have my sympathy.
One thing that I would look at... The file that gets parsed for the main navigation appears to be a simple delimited file. Sure, the delimiter is a rather unusual +++, but that choice means it avoids conflict with things like commas that might be desirable in the link text. It looks as if the last element indicates what type of resource is being accessed (file or directory, although I don't know what - if any - effect that has on the final output). It also appears that there are similar text files (in the framework/cfg/nav/ folder... which should probably not be generally accessible BTW) for the sub-menus. (E.g. the file stores.txt appears to contain the additional navigation items associated with the stores sub-navigation).
You don't mention which sub-menu you're trying to change. I suspect it is the "About TTO" one, which I can't find an entry for... but I'd look to see if there are any similar navigation text files in the /content/about/ folder.
Good Luck!
Of course it was as simple as a function that reads all of the files in the directory and the name of the file. I guess that in this case there was no shortcut.

Joomla 1.5 / Modification of YooTheme "ZOO" Component

I'll start out by mentioning that there is a developer forum for Zoo and I have used it already. My purpose posting here is that I typically get a thorough answer within minutes or hours at SO, whereas the responses on dev forums can be slow or non-existent due to the smaller population base.
My question regards Yootheme's ZOO 2.3.2. By default, a product "Frontpage" appears to have a "Categories" box rendered on top of the items. If one turns off all the available options in Frontpage/Template configuration (hide Titles, Count, Descriptions, etc.), an empty box still remains on top of the items.
I've been able to manually remove the box in its entirety by addressing the following file:
media/zoo/applications/product/templates/default/frontpage.php, and commenting out lines 84-92:
<!-- <?php
// render categories
if ($this->category->childrenHaveItems()) {
$categoriestitle = $this->application->getParams()->get('content.categories_title');
echo $this->partial('categories', compact('categoriestitle'));
}
?> -->
Seems like there should be a more eloquent way of doing this on the admin backend, but I couldn't find one. Am I missing something or is my solution the best one?
ZOO is designed to easily be able to modify the built in templates to suit your needs. ZOO templates are meant to be overridden much like Joomla uses template overrides. Rather than editing the default template, you simply create a new template that does what you want it to. The default template should not be changed.
Here is the documentation on ZOO templates - http://www.yootheme.com/docs/home/item/create-a-new-template
Rather than edit the file you mention above, you make a new template here -
media/zoo/applications/product/templates/YOUR-TEMPLATE-NAME/frontpage.php
Then do all the changing you want without messing up the default.
There is an easier way: First, you must identify what calls the item called "frontpage". In PURE yootheme at least it is called from "home" in the "mainmenu". So click "home" buton of the mainmenu, then over the right menu "Parameters(Basic)" you just chose "-select aplication-" instead "frontpage" and that's it.The Frontpage and its "box" are now gone. At least it works for me.

Article not following site's layout (Joomla)

please go to www.espacioasir.com first and notice how the second article has been 'crushed' to the left - half of the article's normal width.
Anyway, I don't think I can explain much more, my question is very clear: Why is this happening? I do want mention that the content of the article itself has nothing to do (or maybe just a bit), as I tried changing it, and the text did expand to the article's normal width; however, the bar on top (with the article's title "Espacio Asir" and the PDF, print & mail icons was still only at half-width).
I also tried changing the site back to Joomla's default theme, but this did not help. I guess it could be a Joomla 1.5 bug, but I really don't think such obvious error would be present in this version.
I'd really appreciate any help in advance, and if I did not explain myself clear enough, please let me know and I'll add the info needed and post some screens.
Chris
It's a feature, not a bug. If you add a third article, the third one will be on the second row, to the right of the second article, also "crushed". -- Or "1/2 column" rather than full column width.
Information on overriding the default layout. For more help, ask in the Joomla forums.
This how Joomla shows a blog layout. Its working properly.
http://www.joomla4web.com/blog/Front-Page-Blog-Layout.html
If you want to change the layout type, you need to go to the Main Menu, and edit the Home menu item. You will see that its set to blog layout. You can click on the change type button to choose a different one.
