I'm having trouble getting lightswitch to work on my home computer.
If I try to create a new lightswitch silverlight project I get the following message:
If I try to open a project created on my laptop I see:
I've tried both to repair and reinstall visual studio with no change.
Any clues?
Have you installed it as an optional feature?

Specifically the install picture a few posts down:
EDIT: You may have to select "Modify" (depending on installer) to see that screen.
Which update of Visual Studio 2013 you have? As described here Update 2 CTP 1 has known issues and not recommended to install for LightSwitch development.
From Add/Remove Programs in the control panel, uninstall "SQL Server Data Tools 2013". Then re-install VS 2013 Update 1.
If the solution works, then you can try to reinstall SSDT by using the standalone installer.

Environment:
Windows10 Professional Visual Studio 2017 Unity 2017.4.12f1
I changed the default installation path of Visual Studio 2017 and installed it successfully.
The install path as follows:
D:\win10\Program\visual_studio\2017
However, in the Build setting of Unity, it still can't find my Visual Studio 2017.
How can I solve the problem? Thanks~
Go to Edit > Preferences, and select your Visual Studio to be the preferred external editor. Use Browse if Visual Studio is not listed. More info here.
You need to install windows 10 SDK

Here's a third answer. I just bumped in to this, and checked that yes VS was the preferred editor, so I went to open up VS to try uninstalling and reinstalling the GameDevWithUnity workflow, but VS popped up a dialog saying I needed to reboot my computer before installation could complete. So it seems like VS was stuck in the middle of an upgrade, which makes it reasonable that Unity couldn't find an appropriate version. I rebooted and everyone is happy.
"Setup Failed" Recursion too deep; stack overflowed 0x800703E9.
I have windows 10 and newest visual studio version. I have tried rebooting to make sure I have as many resources as possible. I have 4g ram.
If the SSDT installer gives you multiple instances of Visual Studio to choose from, try the "new" option.
I ran into this problem trying to install SSDT 15.8.1 on Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest version of Visual Studio 2017 (v15.8.6) already installed. The SSDT installer gave me 2 options in a dropdown box.
Install tools to this Visual Studio 2017 instance:
Visual Studio 2017
Install new SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2017
When I chose the first option: Visual Studio 2017 (presumably the existing instance), I ran into the cryptic "recursion too deep" error. I installed the SSRS extension for VS (as suggested by others on Stack Overflow) and tried running the SSDT installer again for the existing Visual Studio 2017 instance. I got the same "recursion" error.
I tried one more time, but this time chose the 'Install new SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2017' option. This time the install process completed!
Apparently there is an installer inconsistency between the latest versions of SSDT and Visual Studio. The suggested fix is to start with a previous installation of Visual Studio 2017, install the latest SSDT on top of that, and then upgrade Visual Studio. This is a very time consuming fix. It appears this is only necessary for the SSIS components - the SSAS and SSRS pieces are available as Extensions within VS, and I believe they still install successfully from there.

Please re-run the VS community 2017 installer or go to Control Panel-Programs and Features, uninstall the previous SSDT version for VS 2017, then re-install it, you can have a look at this similar issue.
If this issue persists, please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs and find vslogs.zip under the %temp% folder, then upload the file to Onedrive and share the link here.
You should uninstall the current version of SSDT before install a new version.
If your computer have some pages blocked, you could download the specific version offline installer (Download the header, then use SSDT-Setup.exe /layout [Folder]) for the former version and new version of SSDT.
How I got past it:
Uninstall the Visual Studio extensions for Reporting Services (and Analysis Services) projects in case if you going to select them during SSDT set up. Note: remember to run VS as administrator to do the uninstall.
Reboot VS2017 (just out of general principle.)
I have Xamarin installed on the Visual Studio 2013 on Windows Operating System. It works fine.
There is Xamarin tools in VS2013 as follows:
My problem is as follows:
I have recently installed Visual Studio 2015 on my desktop on Windows operating system. I thought when I opened the VS2015, I expected to see the Xamarin in it, but it does not. Then I installed the Xamarin again, and again and again, but still Xamarin does not show up in VS2015.
I wonder what is wrong? What am I missing?
By the way, I still have VS2013 on my desktop.
No Xamarin tools in VS 2015 as follows:
I even tried the following approach, still no luck.
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features Choose Xamarin
Click Change -> Next -> Click the desired drop down for each items in the tree view and select "Will be installed on local hard drive."
Click Next
I am even getting the following screen when installation is completed, but still I could not able to see Xamarin in VS2015.
I have installed Xamarin in my Visual Studio 2015 two days ago and it showing Xamarin under Tools. Below I have described the approach which I have followed to install Xamarin in Visual Studio 2015.
Go to Contol Panel >> Program Features >> Visual Studio
2015 >> Change>> Modify
1. Select C#/.Net(Xamarin) under Cross Platform Mobile Development
2. Check if these three red marked items are checked or not.
3. And then press update. It will download all the required packages to run Xamarin on VS 2015.Hope it helps you!!
I recently had horrendous problems trying to install Xamarin on VS2015 + Win10. (I don't have any other VS versions installed.) Even a full install and reinstall left huge holes in the installation. I tried repeatedly and each time the whole dev environment seemed to get itself in a different unusable state.
The fix for me, which is probably hitting a nut with a sledgehammer, was to:
Uninstall Xamarin (via Control Panel|Uninstall).
Uninstall Visual Studio (via Control Panel|Uninstall).
Follow Xamarin's manual uninstallation procedures Full Xamarin Uninstall.
Perform full reinstall of Visual Studio, being sure to tick the boxes shown in the answer by Parth Patel above.
This resulted in a faultless, fully functioning Xamarin environment for me. Overkill, maybe, but worth a go if all else fails.
Here is the solution:
I have deleted all the existing versions of visual studio ( 2010, 2012, 2013) except Visual Studio 2015 and then installed the Xamarin, and then I could able to see Xamarin on Visual Studio 2015.
It is not required to delete previous versions of VS. I have Xamarin Studio, VS 2013 and now VS 2015 and working perfectly. I moved to VS 2015 due to recent purchase of Xamarin by MS and that VS 2015 has Xamarin included.
I believe the issue with this question is was that your VS 2015 install did not include the add ins as pointed out in another answer in this question.
After the VS 2015 install -the only caveat was projects created initially in Xaramin Studio and then Opened in VS 2015 to needed to have the build configuration in the project tweaked. If not you could not get the project to build and then be deployed to an emulator or device for debug testing.
We have a few troubleshooting steps on our Knowledge Base that you can find here:
https://kb.xamarin.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1643349-missing-visual-studio-extensions-after-installation
Note: Some of these steps have older versions listed in the respective paths. You should use the latest version number available.
Before any install or uninstall actions. Try open some sample Xamarin project, in most cases during opening project in VS 15, it will show you, what needs to be installed or what is missing / corrupted.
Xamarin samples
I had some problems with my emulator best way to fix the problems is to uninstall everything (emulators, android sdk, vs, xamarin) and reinstall it.
It is also important to delete other or older versions of visual studio. Then you should probably see you options.
First try to uninstall all the other versions of Visual Studio (VS) 2013 in this case. Then try to reinstall Xamarin.
Visual Studio 2015 is little bit different from 2013 version, I am also using xamarin on visual studio 2015. But that is not listed under tools menu like 2013.
Maybe developers had changed that, you can go to "start a new project"(just like you start new app development), there you can find xamarin/android projects list, there you can start new android projects.
This is strange, I did not have any problem with Xamarin & VS 2015 (community).
You said,
I will see the Xamarin in it
Did you try to create a project or/and add your account in the new VS Installation ?
I seem to have a really unique problem with my visual studio 2010 installation. Before installing visual studio i installed SQL Server 2012 express and SQL Server Management Studio. After that i installed Visual Studio 2010 ultimate. The installation goes fine but after it is complete i can't find the application launch icons anywhere. the only new programs that are added are Microsoft Test Manager and Microsoft Visual Studio Documentation. Please Help me!
You need to install the Service pack 1 for it to work! You can download it here
I'm not sure which OS you are running but I'm using Windows 8, and I'm dealing with the same issue. I was able to start VS2010 by clicking on the SQL Server Data Tool icon (same as the VS2010 icon). I hope this helps!
Not even in the directory under program files(x86)?
You could try to open the installation again, if it detects Visual Studio it will ask you to repair the installation :)
I right clicked on the .csproj file > open with >...
I guess your Visual Studio program is Service Pack 1; that is why it can't work with sqlserver express edition. I faced same issue but fixed it by installing sqlserver 2008 Service Pack 2 in place of sql server Express I was previously using.
I have been getting this strange error with VS2010 TFS client, whenever i try to do
any operation related to TFS.
Method not found: 'System.String
Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Client.ExtendedItem.get_LockOwnerDisplayName()'
More background : I was working with TFS build services on my machine and
later I uninstalled the TFS build services .. And after that i started getting this problem.
Also I repaired VS 2010 (Pro edition) and also re-installed VS 2010 SP1 .
Reinstalled TFS build services, reinstalled tfs power tools also
But still the problem persists.
Any clue how to repair/fix this?
Any way to fix the TFS client part of VS2010 ?
After installing the following hotfix, the problem was fixed.
FIX: A hotfix for Visual Studio 2010 SP1 is available to add compatibility support for Visual Studio Team Foundation Service Preview
Intresting point from the above site :
Note The following hotfix includes all the Team Foundation Client
hotfixes that were released after Visual Studio 2010 SP1 was released.
Hope this is helpful to others too.
(I guess this must have refreshed my VS2010 TFS client files)
Another solution :
Bind and rebind the project to the TFS server.
It has solved the problem in my case.
Good Luck.
This same issue happened to me after Windows Update installed update KB2813041 to Visual Studio 2010. After I uninstalled this individual update, it started working again.
Here's how to uninstall an individual update. Go to Control Panel > Windows Update > View Update History > Installed Updates (appears in a sentence at the top of the dialog). Then, scroll through the list of updates looking for Visual Studio and then right-click on the update you want to uninstall and click Uninstall.
Hopefully this helps somebody.
Thanks,
Andy
