How to make attributes selection independent from each other in frontend? - magento

i need help with magento.
I have tried several ways but could not find it.
Lets say i have a product with 2 different attributes like Color and Size.
When i add those attributes to a product and than check the frontend, i first need to choose one attribute in order to make the other attribute selectable.
Isn´t it possible to make alltibutes independent from each other selectable, so the user can choose which attribute he likes to select first.

In my knowledge, it is not possible to make attributes independent of each other, because magento manages associated products according to options selected.
But you can decide which option should control other by drag attributes up or down in admin for each product.

You don't need to use attributes but can simply create custom options on the configurable product level. These custom options will be displayed for every linked simple product and your customers can select each of those independently.
Be careful to create these options on the configurable product level. If you chose to create them on the simple product level you won't be able to link the products anymore unless you set the custom options to "not required".
(Keep in mind I am using Magento version 1.6.2, so this might be different for newer versions)
Hope that helped.

make configurable product options independent on product view page --Magento

I am working on a Magento project and I need to know if there is a way to make a product's options independent to each other or unrequired. I need to use one of several at a time (I have 6 dropdowns).
I have tried add to cart by query string but all dropdown values were still required. I also tried to make all the options default, then modify the selected options in the observer, but I did not meet with success. See the screenshot below for more details.
Any help will be appreciated

Configurable Products in Magneto are only parent products of Simple Products. Whatever you have as an attribute of a Configurable - a Simple Product has to be present for each. To do this out of the box in Magento, you should be looking into setting up a Simple Product with Custom Options.

Magento cant associate simple to configurable product

I created a configurable product and went to the associated products tab and used the quick create product feature to create a bunch of products based on my configurations. However non of these products appear in the list of associated products.
I noticed that the attributes I created don't even show up on the edit product page, on either the simple, or the configurable product.
I started first by creating 3 new attributes for a configurable product I want to add, I setup the options for each one and created a new attribute set based on default that included the new attributes I created.
When I create a new simple product or configurable product, you cannot see the attributes I have created. I have tried with the attributes in the general tab as well as on their own tab. But they are never visible when you try to edit the product.
I'm suspecting the reason I can't associate the products is due to this strange problem
I'm using 1.4.2

It took a while but finally figured it out. When I created my attributes, in Attribute Properties where it says "Apply To:" I had only assigned it to configurable products, but you must also assign to simple products as well. (or just apply to all)
Keep in mind you will have to recreate your original configurable product before it will work.
Assuming you have created attributes with options and attribute set.
Can you please createConfigurable product again
Manage products -> Add Product select your default attribute set and Configurable product option.
The next window will be to choose the attributes that you have have created.
Lets say that there are three attributes color, fragrance, and volume as three different attributes and you pick fragrance here to associate the Configurables to the simples which you will be creating.
After you successfully created the Configurable product.
Create simple products based on the same attribute set default
you must be able to see all the attributes you created(color, fragrance, and volume).
Please pick any option for the Fragrance attribute.
Go to the Manage Products ->select to edit the Configurable product you have just created.
Go to the "Associated Products" tab and select "Any" from the drop down on the extreme left.
You must be able to see the Simple which you have created now
you must also be able to see the parent-child linking attribute "fragrance" present above the grid of products.
Make sure the simple is in "In stock" before you see whether they appear in front end.
Its not necessary for the attribute to appear in the Configurable product edit page.
Follow the above steps, hope it will guide you.
Please let me know if you unable to follow any of the above steps.
You can also read the below link, which is very useful to create a config product.

Cheers
I had the same issue.
A possible workaround is to add the attributes in the single products and after they become available through the configurable product at "Apply To:".

Magento: Different sizes and colors under one simple product?

I’m setting up an online clothing store and have come across a huge problem:
When I make at product (a t-shirt for example), I want to be able to add the available sizes and colors, without having to create a product for every single option.
When I add a color or size, I need to be able to enter a SKU for each product, so I can tell which option the customer chose in the store. First I tried making 2 sets of attributes: “Color” and “Size”, so I could multi-select when adding a product. But the attributes didn’t show up as options in the store, as I had hoped.
I did a lot of searching, and found that some people used the “Costom Option” tab, to make fields for the available sizes, colors etc. - but I don’t want add those options every time I add a product. The multi-select feature I accomplished with the attributes, would have been perfect.
Also I found that someone was forced to pay for an extension to accomplish this - but as I am running on a very tight budget, so I really don’t want to pay anything to achieve this.
You can achieve this programmatically, observing the product save and generate all simple products of a configurable product. Unfortunately, you will have to manage stock for those items separately.
You can do this by creating a configurable products. For more information on how to create configurable products please refer to http://www.magentocommerce.com/knowledge-base/entry/tutorial-creating-a-configurable-product. You can refer to http://www.srota.co for an example.

What's the difference between a product attribute and Custom Options?

What's the difference between a product attribute and Custom Options?
For example, I have a shoes shop, I need to add a shoe size attributes to the system. Both of the methods can implement it. Which way shall I use?
Thanks in advance!
A product attribute is an attribute that you as admin specify for a product.
A custom option is an option for the customer to choose when buying the product.
So you can add the shoe size as attribute if it is static for the product. If you want the customer however to manually choose a size you should do it via custom options.
it seems like you need to set up configurable products.
these are a collection of simple products.
to get used to doing this start with the manage attributes so your system knows what its dealing with.
then add the attributes to attribute sets
all your product attribute sets derive from the default.
custom options should be used differently

Magento: Configurable products without setting up each simple product?

I need to set up hundreds of products, each of which need an drop down that has from a few to twenty or thirty options so I refuse to use configurable products to set these up. I just want a product to use all the options in an attribute.
For example, I want to let customers pick from colors and sizes for a product, but I don't want to have to individually create products for each option. The pricing is the same for everyone and I don't need to track inventory for the options, so there's no benefits in using configurable products.
Is this possible?
Either use simple products and utilize the custom options tab (you will not be able to track inventory of each variant if you go this route). I have seen a number of ways to do this programatically via magento's product creation API or custom code. There is also a number of extensions that make it easier to to do but they do not fully automate the process. One of the automated ways to do it very fast can be found here.
The tutorial is setup exactly the way you want (color & size). Once you create this page make sure you are logged into the admin and open it with your browser. It will work it's magic.
Here are most of the extensions that do it, but they are not as automated as the custom coding methods such as the one linked above:
Product Creator
Automatic Configurables
Better Configurable Products
Perhaps instead of configurable products you could use simple products with custom options instead. There are even ways of importing products with options intact, most of the work is done by copy & paste in a spreadsheet which is much quicker.
If you're looking for a more programmatic way of doing things then you might think of making a custom product type which adds the same options every time so you never need to specify them again. Modifying the product type would modify all options at once too.
Yes, this is possible, just make attributes and note that this is a programming forum, for general questions head to magento forums
Simple product with custom option is not === configurable product as each option do not have Magento stock control, as you can never say Size "Small" sold out as there is no stock for options, that is the main reason why Magento has to use simple product to be the option of the configurable product as simple has stock.
If you have unlimited stock then using simple product plus custom option is the best solution for performance.
