I have one question related to Magento new version its good for security point of view and other points which are mentioned in the release notes but there is no much enhancement related to front end performance.
Currently I have Magento 1.4.2 on my ongoing project for which client complain me performance are slow for end user perspective, to overcome this issue I tried to test Magento 1.8 performance for similar test cases but I don't even find any performance boosting result like in category page I get same loading time in both Magento 1.4 and Magento 1.8 and also when I import 10,000 product and then check performance for loading time but there is no effect.
Can any one highlight why Magento 1.8 is better than Magento 1.4? It's obvious the newer version is better than old but I want to convince my client with some convincing point.
It seems Performance refers to loading speed of magento website. To make faster loading , You can follow this link
There are no any updates with magento 1.8 related to performance. In this version
mangeto team focused only on
a) Functional improvment -shopping cart, checkout, content management system, and product import and export.
b) Tax calculation - Value Added Tax (VAT) and Fixed Product Tax (FPT) calculations for the Magento admin, invoices, and credit memos.
c) Security

i have already upgraded my site earlier to Joomla 2.5, but still i am using Joomla1.5 as live site. now i need to fully upgrade but dont want to fully migrate i just need menus and menu items from joomla 1.5 other things are already updated in New Site (Joomla 2.5).
so please tell me the way by which only menu and menu items were migrated i cannot do it manually beacuse they are in thousnds (approx 4000 Menu Items). i have tried by exporting and importing menus databse tables manually, but with no success.
Please advice me
Thanks in Advance
Since you have already done this, you should be familiar with the process of the upgrade/migrate data from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 2.5.
However much of the success of your attempt is depending also on the overall db changes that might have occurred on your current 1.5 live site.
Given that, you might be just good by only migrating the menu-items, but if any other changes occurred in your website, like changing older articles or categories etc (changes that do not exist on the already upgraded 2.5 site), then you might end with a messy database, if you only try to import the menu items.
In this case, you might want to consider to migrate/upgrade the whole database again, and connect your 2.5 website with this database.
But if you are sure that you only need the menu-items, then follow below:
Probably you used one of the available tools JUpgrade or SP Upgrade. I don't know about JUpgrade, but I would recommend to use the SP Upgrade (paid download), which allows migration of selected db tables.
If this is not the option for you, then perform the full database upgrade with your preferred method (as you have already done), in order to create a fresh new 2.5 database (not do this over the current 2.5). Then you can export/import/replace data from the fresh 2.5 to the old one.
Hope this helps a bit...
How to bridge the latest version of vituemart v2.0 with the K2 Jhoomla??
According to this post :
Virtuemart is a release candidate but the truth is that this is not
what it sounds like. Even in that stage they keep changing the
database scheme once a while so it is a little bit difficult to follow
this. We do plan to support Virtuemart 2 and Joomla! 1.7 but currently
there is no estimated date.
So I think you should wait and check Joomlaworks website for updates

What is the difference in versions of Joomla CMS i.e. Joomla 1.5, Joomla 1.6 and joomla 1.7 ?
Main Differences between 1.5 and 1.6
Refined Access Control Layer
One-click upgrades of core CMS
J1.6 to 1.7 is very much an incremental upgrade - lots of small refinements to user workflow.
J1.8 will be called J2.5 - but don't ask why.
Features of joomla 1.7 are :-
1) unlimited accesss levels
2) user can be assigned to user groups and user groupes can than be assignd to access levels
3) templates: administrator templates and website templates
4) templates styles
5) search engine optimization
Joomla 1.5 - Long term support (LTS) version
Joomla 1.6 - Short term support (STS) version. Adds a full access control list functionality plus, user-defined category hierarchy, and admin interface improvements.
Joomla 1.7 - Short term support (STS) version. Adds enhanced security and improved migration tools.
And one more thing to add:
J1.6+ has capability to have unlimited (and nested) Categories.
And a total shift towards more developer friendliness. Developers can easily customize the extensions and have more control over the code. Some new API included in version 1.6+ and also there is more focus on security and stability of whole system. The best thing is that, its one-click upgrade like you see in wordpress.
So above are the differences that you wont see in Joomla 1.5.
Joomla 1.5 and 2.5 are the only supported version as all 1.6 and 1.7 users are recommened to migrate to 2.5.
A multitude of things have been changed and added since 1.5 such as Multi user access, backend interface, extension code structure, increase in speed and much more.
Even though 2.5 is the latest version and has many more features, lot's of people have stuck with Joomla 1.5 as they are used to the backend interface and coding style. I myself like to stick to Joomla 1.5 unless the site I'm developing requires multi user access in which case I will go for 2.5.
In the end its a matter of choice and both versions are good and secure.
Joomla 3.0 will come out in September and even then, lots of people will stick to older versions.
The features of Joomla 1.7 in compare with joomla 1.5 and 1.6 are:
1) One click upgrade
2) Multi language Improvements
3) Refined Access Control Layer
4) Faster release cycles
main difference is xml structure is change.
joomla 1.5 xml file and joomla 1.6 or 1.7 or 2.5 xml file are different structured .
1.5 and 1.7 are long term support for many years
joomla 1.6 is a intermediate version and d'ont have support yet!
I have to build a News based website but I am not sure whether to use joomla 1.5 or 1.7? I have been using joomla 1.5 for a while and there are many extensions available for it. On the other hand joomla 1.7 has less extensions available at present and I have heard joomla 1.5 support will be stopped by next year. So would you please kindly suggest me which version of joomla should I go for and why?
Thanks in Advance :)
If you are building new, build in 1.7 as 1.5 is soon to be depreciated. While some extensions are only available in 1.5, most everything new is being written for 1.7.
1.7 has a much better ACL model and other improvements that will be useful for you.
Reasons to stay on 1.5 are limited to:
1. I absolutely need a specific module and nothing similar is available in 1.7 (but if you are building for a client, think of the implications down the road for this decision.)
2. I am supporting many sites and reusing resources among them; all my other sites are on 1.5. I have a migration plan to get them to 1.7 (or 2.5), but I want to do it later in an orderly manner.
If you are holding back for any other reason, you are making a mistake.
If you need extensions that are only available for 1.5, I'd use that. But if you can get away with using/making extensions for 1.7, I'd definitely recommend using 1.7. There will be a little bit of learning at first, but it'll make for a much easier upgrade to 1.8, and you may just find some of the new 1.7 features useful.
That's the approach we've been taking recently for our client projects. There's always a bit of a chicken-and-egg issue at first (waiting for extensions to update), but we now find there are very few things stopping us from using 1.7 as a base (although we're comfortable creating our own extensions where needed).
I am pretty new to Virtuemart and now I do have to set up my first Webshop for a Customer.
As there is already a Virtuemart 2 Version I am now not shure which Version to take.
Well I think I am going to use VM1, because it is stable. But now I am asking myself:
What are the advantages/features of VM2?
Are there already Plugins out there for VM2? (Because I assume that
they'll need to be rewritten for VM2)
When can I expect a stable version of VM2?
Do you already have experience with VM2?
Advantages/features of VM2
For faster and more secure programming they use now more abstract classes.
Completly redesigned table layout.
Added hooks for plugins (own views, own customer number system, and so on,...), look in the wiki for more information ( http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/wiki/Plugin_system )
Added registering while checkout
New backend design
Hardened against hackers
New js (jQuery to avoid Mootools incompatibility problems)
Customfields for the computer/pizza configurator
Real multicurrency, real currency format defined by currency
Prices displaying configurable by shoppergroups (also rounding)
Various sorting and searching options
Update system using Akeeba Release System (ARS, more information akeebabackup.com/software/akeeba-release-system.html)
Extensions for VM2
The extensions directory contain a lot of extensions for VM and some were updated for VM2 ( http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/extension-specific/virtuemart-extensions )
Stable version of VM2
There is no clear data about this now. The current version at the moment is a release candidate which means a sable version is coming soon after sufficient users and developers test it and report the bugs.
Experience with VM2
I've used VM1 and migrated two websites for VM2 before. VM2 definitely worth the try, templates is way much better than the old table based ugly coded layout. Everything is perfect except if you are going to use Joomla 1.6 The modules does not work without glitches. Other that it's working with Joomla 1.5 perfectly.
Try Virtuemart 2 only if you are not planning to use any custom shipping module like canada post or UPS.
Or have enough knowledge to build it on your own.
VM2 performs shipping and payment system using plugin and trying hard to follow MVC structure of joomla.which is still under development.
Unless, VM2 is great and flexible.
