Are Spring JpaRepository custom-implementations automatically transactional? - spring

everything is in the title...
I have a repository extending JpaRepository<User, Long> with additional customized methods, following the pattern described in http://docs.spring.io/spring-data/jpa/docs/1.4.3.RELEASE/reference/html/jpa.repositories.html
The Spring documentation says: CRUD methods on repository instances are transactional by default. For reading operations the transaction configuration readOnly flag is set to true, all others are configured with a plain #Transactional.
Does this applies to the custom-methods? Are there transactional?
Advanced: Where could I find the answer by myself? (i.e. which class of Spring framework is responsible for generating the dynamic-proxy and decorating the calls?)

1) Same as Ralphs answer. They have to be annotated with #Transaction or handled by you explicitly
2) There is no "responsible" class for extending/decorating the Spring repository interfaces. YOU are the one responsible for extending them.
I'm going to add an example of a custom method that executes a custom query.

You then create your EntityManagerFactory bean (which you build with a Hibernate persistance provider, or however you set it up, it's up to you), and inject it into the constructor of the PersonRepositoryImpl bean.

<constructor-arg ref="entityManagerFactory" />
</bean>
These would be the steps to provide some custom queries into your database.

Writing generic spring jpa repository for all entities

I am working on Spring Boot application.
We have Service Layer,Rest Controller and Dao as repository.
I have 20 to 30 tables in my database and I dont want to create repository for each entity and extends that to CrudRepository.
ex : User is an Entity, to perform persistance operations on User, I have to create UserRepository which extends CrudRepository.
Same with Department, Company etc...
What i want to do is, I will write a BaseRepository which gonna extend CrudRepository, base repository should accept all entities and do persistance operations.
Is there a way to that ??
Don't extend CrudRepository it's functionality is all tied to the generic type, it'd be hacky to extend it for a generic implementation. You probably just want something simple which uses the JPA entity manager directly:

Spring boot cannot find beans

i have a Spring Boot project which has some external packages i need to import as Beans in the main application.
So i have my main application in com.package.app package and some classes (among which some repositories) in com.package.commons package.
In order to take these beans i have my main class annotated as follows:

But when i launch the application it may occur (not always but very ofter) that the start up fails with these kind of error:

Consider defining a bean of type 'com.package.commons.persistence.repository.BrandRepository' in your configuration.
My BrandRepository is annotated with #Repository and the service class with #Service
The really strange thing is that if i keep launching the app at the end it stars... but there is no reason for it...
If you're using JPA, you'll also need the #EnableJpaRepositories annotation.
Also consider to use #EnableTransactionManagement to enable declarative transaction handling.
E.g. use something like the following in the same package or a parent package where you have your JPA entities and JPA repositories (untested):

And don't forget to annotate your #Service classes also with #Transactional.
If you confirm that the Application which with the startup method of this application is good, and confirm the #ComponentScan is good also. And the configuration file yaml or properties of JPA also good.
How about trying extends JPA Repository like this:
public class xxxResponsitory extends JpaRepository<T, E>{

}
Cause JpaRepository has already annotated with #Repository annotation, T means the type of Primary Key, I always use Integer or Long, autoboxing type. E means the main type of this repository.
Make an example:
Now we have an Entity type named User, the Primary key type of User is Long, I would write the repository like this:
public class UserRepository extends JpaRepository<Long, User>{
...
}
Don't need annotated anything, then, In the service class, #Autowried UserRepository, everything is good to run. But make sure the things that I talk at the start of my answer.

Spring Boot detects 2 identical repository beans

I am using Spring Boot with Spring Data JPA, there is only one #SpringBootApplication. And I have also a repository classes, for example:

The proplem is, when I start the application, I get following error:
Parameter 0 of constructor in com.so.SomeComponent required a single bean, but 2 were found:
- qualifier: defined in file [path\to\SORepositoryImpl.class]
- soRepositoryImpl: defined in file [path\to\SORepositoryImpl.class]
So, as you see, somehow 2 beans of one repository class are created. How can I fix this?
You can use Spring Data JPA methods having created Proxy element and than inject it into public class SORepositoryImpl:

Try taking the #Repository annotation off the SORepositoryImpl class
e.g.
#Transactional(readOnly = true)

The error message is implying you have two beans, one named "qualifier" and one named "soRepositoryImpl", which is probably in a Config class.
I guess you should share your SomeComponent class supposing you have no extra configuration class/xml. My take is that you are injecting as 'soRepositoryImpl' there where you have defined as 'qualifier'. Having two options them. I would say to just remove the annotation parameter 'qualifier' and it should work.
Moreover, unless you want do specify an custom DAO implementation you can avoid #Repository at all (That's an annotation you use to make it injectable for your services). You can just create an interface extending Spring interface and define methods for queries.
For example:

List<Person> findByEmailAddressAndLastname(EmailAddress emailAddress, String lastname);
Then you can just inject it in your services/controller directly.

OK, I've found the issue.
I just couldn't understand, how Spring creates the second bean (soRepositoryImpl), because I've never told it, neither explicitly nor in config classes. But I figured out that the second bean us created during the instantiation of my another SORepository (which is in the different package com.another and which extends JpaRepository).
So, when Spring tries to resolve all dependencies of com.another.SORepository it somehow finds my com.so.SORepositoryImpl (which has nothing familiar with com.another.SORepository - not extending\implementing, not jpa stuff, only similar names!).
Well it seems like a Spring bug to me, because it doesn't check the real inheritance of dependent classes of repositories, only name + Impl (even in different package) suits for him.
The only thing that I should do is to rename `com.so.SORepositoryImpl and that it, no 2 beans anymore.

How to access entity manager with spring boot and spring data

How can I get access to the Entity Manager in the repository when using Spring Boot and Spring Data?
Otherwise, I will need to put my big query in an annotation. I would prefer to have something more clear than a long text.
You would define a CustomRepository to handle such scenarios. Consider you have CustomerRepository which extends the default spring data JPA interface JPARepository<Customer,Long>
Create a new interface CustomCustomerRepository with a custom method signature.

Extend CustomerRepository interface using CustomCustomerRepository

Create an implementation class named CustomerRepositoryImpl which implements CustomerRepository. Here you can inject the EntityManager using the #PersistentContext. Naming conventions matter here.

In case you have many repositories to deal with, and your need in EntityManager is not specific for any particular repository, it is possible to implement various EntityManager functionality in a single helper class, maybe something like that:

The refreshAndUse method here is a sample method to consume a detached entity instance, perform a refresh for it and return a result of a custom function to be applied to the refreshed entity in a declarative transaction context. And you can add other methods too, including query ones...

#Autowire failing with #Repository

I am not being able to make #Autowire annotation work with a #Repository annotated class.
I have an interface:

In another class, I need to use this repository to find an account by the username, so I am using autowiring, but I am checking if it works and the accountRepository instance is always null:

I have also set the packages to scan for the components (sessionFactory.setPackagesToScan(new String [] {"com.foo.bar"});), and it does autowire other classes annotated with #Component for instance, but in this one annotated with #Repository, it is always null.
Am I missing something?
Your problem is most likely that you're instantiating the bean yourself with new, so that Spring isn't aware of it. Inject the bean instead, or make the bean #Configurable and use AspectJ.
It seems likely that you haven't configured your Spring annotations to be enabled. I would recommend taking a look at your component scanning annotations. For instance in a Java config application:
#ComponentScan(basePackages = { "com.foo" })
... or XML config:
<context:annotation-config />
<context:component-scan base-package="com.foo" />
If your FooClass is not under the base-packages defined in that configuration, then the #Autowired will be ignored.
As an additional point, I would recommend trying #Autowired(required = true) - that should cause your application to fail on start-up rather than waiting until you use the service to throw a NullPointerException. However, if annotations are not configured, then there will be no failure.
You should test that your autowiring is being done correctly, using a JUnit test.

This should indicate whether your basic configuration is correct. The next step, assuming that this is being deployed as a web application, would be to check that you have put the correct bits and pieces in your web.xml and foo-servlet.xml configurations to trigger Spring initialisation.
FooClass needs to be instancied by Spring to have his depencies managed.
Make sure FooClass is instancied as a bean (#Component or #Service annotation, or XML declaration).
Edit : sessionFactory.setPackagesToScan is looking for JPA/Hibernate annotations whereas #Repository is a Spring Context annotation.
AccountRepositoryImpl should be in the Spring component-scan scope
