Store address of Object in Windows Registry - windows

Can we store the the address of the Object in windows Registry and later from some other function read the address we've stored and make changes in that Object directly.
If it is possible, any pointers to getting started tutorial ..!

You could store the address of an object in the registry and then come back later, read it, and then modify the object. For example in C you could have a pointer, convert it to a long, and store it in the registry:
SomePointer *p;
long i = (long)p;
// now store i in the registry
And later, get it back:
int new_i = read value from registry
SomePointer *new_p = (SomePointer *)i;
You really don't want to do that, though.
First, that pointer is only valid for the current instance of the program. If you exit the program and restart, then the pointer is no good. In addition, the pointer will be meaningless to any other application that might be running at any time. Also, in a garbage collected environment that can move things around in memory, the pointer could become invalid at any time.
Also, there's a performance impact. Accessing the registry is very slow.
From a software construction standpoint, it's really bad form to use a global resource such as the registry to solve the local problem of sharing data in a single program.
And, finally, from a practical standpoint, it makes no sense. If you have access to the source code so that you can modify it to write and read the registry, then you can use a more robust and less intrusive way to share the data. For example, the module that writes the registry could instead just export a symbol, and the module that you would have had reading the registry can access that exported symbol.
So, yes ... it is possible to store a pointer in the registry, and later read it back and access the object to which the pointer refers. But it's a really bad idea.

Why does "garbage" data appear to not be meaningful?

I have always wondered why garbage data appears to not be meaningful. For clarity, what I mean by "garbage" is data that is just whatever happens to be at a particular memory address, that you have access to because of something like forgetting to initialize a variable.
For example, printing out an unused array gave me this:

Obviously, this is useless for my application, but it also seems like it is not anything useful for any application. Why is this? Is there some sort of data protection going on here perhaps?
As you state in your question:
... "garbage" is data that is just whatever happens to be at a particular memory address, that you have access to because of something like forgetting to initialize a variable.
This implies that something else used to be in that memory before you got to use it for your variable. Whatever used to be there may or may not have any relation to how you wish to use the variable. That is, most languages do not force memory used for one type of object to be reused for the exact same type.
This means, if memory was used to store a pointer, and then released, that same memory may be used to store a string. If the pointer value was read out as if it was a string, something that looks like garbage may appear. This is because the bytes used to represent a pointer value are not restricted to the values that correspond to printable ASCII values.
A common way to detect a buffer overrun has occurred in a program is to examine a pointer value and see if it contains printable ASCII values. In this case, the user of the memory as a pointer sees junk, but in this case it is "printable".
Of course memory is never garbage, unless you make a conscious effort. After all, you are on a deterministic machine, even if it doesn't always seem like it. (Of course, if you interprete arbitrary bytes as text then it's unlikely that you see yourself as ASCII art, although you would deserve it.)
That was the reason for one of the worst bugs in history, quite recently, cf. https://xkcd.com/1354/. Where do you live to have missed it?

(why) is FSCTL_SET_OBJECT_ID dangerous?

NTFS files can have object ids. These ids can be set using FSCTL_SET_OBJECT_ID. However, the msdn article says:
Modifying an object identifier can result in the loss of data from portions of a file, up to and including entire volumes of data.
But it doesn't go into any more detail. How can this result in loss of data? Is it talking about potential object id collisions in the file system, and does NTFS rely on them in some way?
Side node: I did some experimenting with this before I found that paragraph, and set the object id's of some newly created files, here's hoping that my file system's still intact.
I really don't think this can directly result in loss of data.
The only way I can imagine it being possible is if e.g. a backup program assumes that (1) every file has an Object Id, and (2) that the program is keeping track of all IDs at all times. In that case it might assume that an ID that is not in its database must refer to a file that should not exist, and it might delete the file.
Yeah, I know it sounds ridiculous, but that's the only way I can think of in which this might happen. I don't think you can lose data just by changing IDs.
They are used by distributed link tracking service which enables client applications to track link sources that have moved. The link tracking service maintains its link to an object only by using these object identifier (ID).
So coming back to your question,

I dont think so. Windows does provides us the option to set the object IDs using FSCTL_SET_OBJECT_ID but that doesnt bring the risk of ID collision.
Attempting to set an object identifier on an object that already has an object identifier will fail.

Yes. Object identifiers are used to track files and directories. An index of all object IDs is stored on the volume. Rename, backup, and restore operations preserve object IDs. However, copy operations do not preserve object IDs, because that would violate their uniqueness.
How can this result in loss of data?
You wont get into a serious problem if you change(or rather set) object ID of user-created files(as you did). However, if a user(knowingly/unknowingly) sets object ID used by a shared object file/library, change will not be reflected as is.
Since Windows doesnt want everyone(but developers) to play with crutial library files, it issues a generic warning:
Modifying an object identifier can result in the loss of data from
portions of a file, up to and including entire volumes of data.
Bottom line: Change it if you know what you are doing.

Pointers and debugging in golang

I am tying to modify a value of a struct via its pointer but end up modifing some memory other the part I want. Line 92 is where my issue is.
How would you debug a situation like this (tools etc.), and how do I get the broker.Port set?

You're not using pointers throughout. Start off with a Registry of type:
type Registry []*Broker
and work from there

As far as debugging tricks, this was my process:
Value isn't being changed, so something is being copied by value
Notice that Registry is type []Broker, but we want to modify Brokers, so it needs to be a pointer
Change type Registry to []*Broker
Keep attempting to compile, letting the compiler tell me every place we are using a value where we need a pointer (woohoo fast compile times and static typing)

Is it possible to associate data with a running process?

As the title says, I want to associate a random bit of data (ULONG) with a running process on the local machine. I want that data persisted with the process it's associated with, not the process thats reading & writing the data. Is this possible in Win32?
Yes but it can be tricky. You can't access an arbitrary memory address of another process and you can't count on shared memory because you want to do it with an arbitrary process.
The tricky way
What you can do is to create a window (with a special and known name) inside the process you want to decorate. See the end of the post for an alternative solution without windows.
First of all you have to get a handle to the process with OpenProcess.
Allocate memory with VirtualAllocEx in the other process to hold a short method that will create a (hidden) window with a special known name.
Copy that function from your own code with WriteProcessMemory.
Execute it with CreateRemoteThread.
Now you need a way to identify and read back this memory from another process other than the one that created that. For this you simply can find the window with that known name and you have your holder for a small chunk of data.
Please note that this technique may be used to inject code in another process so some Antivirus may warn about it.
Final notes
If Address Space Randomization is disabled you may not need to inject code in the process memory, you can call CreateRemoteThread with the address of a Windows kernel function with the same parameters (for example LoadLibrary). You can't do this with native applications (not linked to kernel32.dll).
You can't inject into system processes unless you have debug privileges for your process (with AdjustTokenPrivileges).
As alternative to the fake window you may create a suspended thread with a local variable, a TLS or stack entry used as data chunk. To find this thread you have to give it a name using, for example, this (but it's seldom applicable).
The naive way
A poor man solution (but probably much more easy to implement and somehow even more robust) can be to use ADS to hide a small data file for each process you want to monitor (of course an ADS associated with its image then it's not applicable for services and rundll'ed processes unless you make it much more complicated).
Iterate all processes and for each one create an ADS with a known name (and the process ID).
Inside it you have to store the system startup time and all the data you need.
To read back that informations:
Iterate all processes and check for that ADS, read it and compare the system startup time (if they mismatch then it means you found a widow ADS and it should be deleted.
Of course you have to take care of these widows so periodically you may need to check for them. Of course you can avoid this storing ALL these small chunk of data into a well-known location, your "reader" may check them all each time, deleting files no longer associated to a running process.

Is 'handle' synonymous to pointer in WinAPI?

I've been reading some books on windows programming in C++ lately, and I have had some confusing understanding of some of the recurring concepts in WinAPI. For example, there are tons of data types that start with the handle keyword'H', are these supposed to be used like pointers? But then there are other data types that start with the pointer keyword 'P'. So I guess not. Then what is it exactly? And why were pointers to some data types given separate data types in the first place? For example, PCHAR could have easily designed to be CHAR*?
Handles used to be pointers in early versions of Windows but are not anymore. Think of them as a "cookie", a unique value that allows Windows to find back a resource that was allocated earlier. Like CreateFile() returns a new handle, you later use it in SetFilePointer() and ReadFile() to read data from that same file. And CloseHandle() to clean up the internal data structure, closing the file as well. Which is the general pattern, one api function to create the resource, one or more to use it and one to destroy it.
Yes, the types that start with P are pointer types. And yes, they are superfluous, it works just as well if you use the * yourself. Not actually sure why C programmers like to declare them, I personally think it reduces code readability and I always avoid them. But do note the compound types, like LPCWSTR, a "long pointer to a constant wide string". The L doesn't mean anything anymore, that dates back to the 16-bit version of Windows. But pointer, const and wide are important. I do use that typedef, not doing so will risk future portability problems. Which is the core reason these typedefs exist.
A handle is the same as a pointer only so far as both ID a particular item. Obviously a pointer is the address of the item so if you know it's structure you can start getting fields in the item. A handle may or may not be a pointer - basically if it is a pointer you don't know what it is pointing to so you can't get into the fields.
Best way to think of a handle is that it is a unique ID for something in the system. When you pass it to something in the system the system will know what to cast it to (if it is a pointer) or how to treat it (if it is just some id or index).
