I want to embed Mono into a 64 bit Mac OSX application (ported from Windows C++ where everything works fine). Since only 32 bit Mono is available pre-compiled for Mac OSX I managed to build my own 64 bit Mono release following this manual.
When debugging my 64 bit application in XCode the mono-embedding initialization fails with
"The assembly mscorlib.dll was not found or could not be loaded.
It should have been installed in the `usr/local/lib/mono/4.5' directory."
I can step into the code where this error is generated (domain.c - mono_init_internal()). Unfortunately my mono build obviously didn't produce a 4.5 directory. The only available ".NET-Version" seems to be 2.0: usr/local/lib/mono/2.0/mscorlib.dll exists, BUT NO 4.5 subdirectory at all.
Is there something I forgot in the build?

An alternate solution is to take a Mono 32 bits distribution, build the 64 binaries (without the MCS), and merge the result back.
This is the way this project works in order to provide universal binaries. You can adapt it in order to replace the binaries instead of merging them.
Found it. The answer to my question "Is there something I forgot in the build?" is YES! Apparently, by default, ./configure; make; compiles all available .NET platforms (2.0, 3.5., 4.0, 4.5). After building you can find them all under {UnpackedTarBall}/mcs/class/lib - there are net_2_0, net_3_5, net_4_0 and net_4_5 subdirectories.
Unfortunately "make install" only installs .Net 2.0 as described in my original post.
I managed to install the other profiles by the following sequence:
$ cd {UnpackedTarBall}/mcs
$ make PROFILE=net_4_5 install
repeat and replace the above for other profiles (net_3_5, net_4_0). There are some helpful hints in {UnpackedTarBall}/mcs/README.

How can I build using MingW so my resulting DLL is 64 bit architecture?
afaict there is no ready-made solution for this.
here are some generic hints (haven't tried them):
you would need to install mingw64 (the mingw_build.bat seems to assume that you are using mingw32)
fix the paths in mingw_build.bat
additionally set the C-compiler to one that produces 64bit binaries:
CC=x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc
I have a strange error with qmake: To compile octomap, first I need to compile octovis code, accordingly with documentation I need to use:
cd octovis/src/extern/QGLViewer
qmake
mingw32-make
But when I use qmake, they just do nothing, seeing the task monitor the amount of memory used is constant and the amount of processor used is 0.
I tried to uninstall/reinstall QT and MinGW, and didn't work, I have change the version of QT (4.8.5, 4.8.6, 5.5) and MinGW and didn't work, I'm using windows 7 over 64 bits. I appreciate any solution.
I was able to generate the qmake files with no problem. make failed, but my environment is QT 5.5.1, which I doubt is compatible. I can tell you how my environment is set up, and that should get you going.
Go ahead and download QT Creator for whatever version of QT you require. This includes the appropriate mingw version, so they don't need to be downloaded separately. http://download.qt.io/archive/qt/
Find out what version of QT is recommended. It looks like 4.X, but I'm not 100 percent certain.
Add X:/QTCREATOR/QTVERSION/mingw/bin to your system path, with QTCREATOR being the root directory for QT Creator and QTVERSION being the version. These are included with the QT Creator install.
Also add X:/QTCREATOR/Tools/mingw/bin to your system path.
I'm assuming you have CMake already. That's obviously required.
This should have your build environment set up properly. You're sure to encounter other problems along the way.
The best option appears to just run it under Linux. There are pre-compiled binaries.
Is here anyone who successfully build Google Breakpad on MacOS using standard Qt tool chain without xcode?
I'm trying to get work this library for two days now and still without success. I already successfully compiled it and ran it on Windows and Linux. (from original Google-git repository).
But MacOS version of library has missing makefile for libbreakpad_client.a and generated libbreakpad.a does not contain the exception handler.

I found few topic about this issue on here on a stackoverflow but advice with updated makefiles didn't work for me (or I didn't copy makefiles correctly).
I also tried to download updated version directly from Mozilla repository (version 10 and 11beta). But when I tried to compile Mozilla version, there was another errors with undefined symbols (on Mac and also on Linux).
I also found AlekSi - breakpad-qt but this version also works correctly only under Win and Linux. Under Mac there is some errors about "Unknown architecture -- are you on a PDP-11?"
I will be gratitude to anyone who can point me how to compile it and get it work under Mac or who can send me a packed version of breakpad which can be compiled under MacOS using standard make and used in Qt application.

AlekSi's breakpad-qt is three years old, and the breakpad source in it doesn't support 64 bits on OSX.
Failing to detect your processor type is what makes it complain about "Unknown architecture -- are you on a PDP-11?".
You definitely need a more recent breakpad version, either from their svn, or from my breakpad-qt fork at: https://github.com/webitup/qt-breakpad
Now, if you intend on supporting 10.6 (MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.6) as well, you need to patch breakpad source using this https://github.com/webitup/qt-breakpad/commit/71a9fdedd827e5939ba66bfcc0cd6c1c9fbbc87b (-> I don't think 10.6 has PPC support)
Then:
You apparently managed to compile directly from source, so, good for that way.
Now, if you want to build a framework from breakpad instead, and link to that from your qt app/lib, then Dave Mateer suggestion is the way to go (and he deserves the credit). The following worked for me:
cd $BREAKPAD_SOURCE_TREE
xcodebuild -sdk macosx10.7 -project src/client/mac/Breakpad.xcodeproj -configuration Release -target Breakpad ARCHS=x86_64 ONLY_ACTIVE_ARCH=YES MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.6 GCC_VERSION=com.apple.compilers.llvmgcc42
Note that I'm only building target Breakpad instead of All (it seems you only need that - and a test is failing for me using All, though it does produce a usable framework either way).
And note that you don't require XCode per-se - just the command line builds tools.
In order to use that framework in your QT project:

QMAKE_LFLAGS += -F$$BREAKPAD_PATH/client/mac/build/Release/
LIBS += -framework Breakpad
}
And you should be set.
Finally: I also pushed a number of changes in my breakpad-qt fork source itself to have it at least compile (on OSX!) against the updated breakpad version, but I have no idea yet if it does work properly.

I need to install OpenCV on Win32. I do not have it installed currently. I downloaded OpenCV-2.0.0a-win32.exe and ran it. What the heck do I do now? There are no .lib's and whatnot.
I found some instructions for building the release using cmake at http://opencv.willowgarage.com/wiki/InstallGuide . I downloaded the latest and greatest cmake, and tried to follow the instructions, but I was guessing. No joy.
I specified VC++9 when I did the "configure," but cmake built a VC++ 6 dsw file. No vcproj. I converted the dsw into a vc++9 vcproj anyway, just to see if it would work. Nope. It compiled lots of files, but many failed because it could not find omp.h. Sure enough, it's not there, anywhere. The build log said, 'A tool returned an error code from "Performing Custom Build Step".'
I am lost.
Ideally, I would like to find a full installation with all the files pre-built for Win32 vc++ 2008. Failing that, I need instructions that even I can follow. Short sentences and small words, but lots of them.
Please help!
UPDATE: I tried to build just CXCORE. It complained, "cannot open file 'VCOMPD.lib'" There's that OMP again.
For version 2.0, you must build the project from source.
Here's what you will need:
The OpenCV installer.
CMake. Here's the CMake installer.
Instructions for using CMake to install OpenCV-2.0.01-win32. Those instructions need an extra step if you are using a vc++ Express edition. In that case you must un-check ENABLE_OPENMP when running the CMake GUI.
Instructions for setting up an application project. (Thanks to mloskot for this find.)
If you've installed OpenCV-2.0.0a-win32.exe then it will install pre-built DLLs and libs. Then you just have to follow the instructions in this tutorial.
I recommend that you wipe the folder you previously installed OpenCV2.0 in and reinstall it.
Update:
Well sorry it didn't work out. I suggest the following then: check out the latest version from the SVN repository, https://code.ros.org/svn/opencv/trunk/opencv with any SVN client - I use TortoiseSVN.
Then run CMake (I see you've already installed it) on the source folder and then compile the Solution file. This should work - it does for me.
I apologize for my old answer - I had started off with OpenCV a few months ago in the same way and assumed that downloading the Gold version would still work - apparently not.
OMP
The OMP issue may arise from the checked Enable OpenMP in the CMake config. Try unchecking that .. might solve your initial problem.
I followed Jive Dadson's procedure to get OpenCV2.0 to work on Visual Studio 2010 Express (disabled OMP).
All went good until compilation of the generated stuff in Debug and Release. In both cases got this error: "LINK : fatal error LNK1181: cannot open input file '../../lib/Release/cv200.lib'"
in debug the only difference is that the library is cv200d.lib.
EDIT: I solved by downloading the latest svn snapshot for OpenCV2.0. One additional thing on Vista/7: it may be good to execute CMake as administrator.

I'm having some trouble installing and configuring qt on my vista laptop.
I'm trying to setup a development environment on my laptop where I compile from the command line, because that's how the environment is setup on my university's linux machines, so I don't want to tie myself to some IDE .. (plus, real programmers use the command line!)
I haven't used the command line before for C++ development, it was all MSVC, so now I'm having a bit of trouble.
I'm still using MSVC, but from the command line. I practically have no idea what's going on, I just know that I have to run:
qmake
nmake
to compile my code!
I downloaded the opensource version of qt, and did the configuration, and tried a simple qt application (from a tutorial) and it worked, it compiled and executed pretty much as expected.
Now, when I decided to run another project that uses opengl, I got the following error:
fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'qgl.h': No such file
or directory
I'm not sure where does the compiler look for header files, and I didn't copy any header files anywhere, I assume that configure.exe worked its magic somehow and added the include directory to one or more enviroment variables or to some registery location or whatever other peculier places that the MSVC compiler searches for to find include directories.
However, what I did was search my C:\qt\include\ folder to make sure that qgl.h exists, and sure enough there it was. so why can't nmake find it?
I think the actual solution to this is in your pro file:
QT += opengl
If you want to stay with the command line anyway (plus use it on a linux box later / parallel) I'd suggest at least trying out the MinGW version of Qt. I'm using it regularly, and besides of the non-existance of a GUI it works pretty well. Using MinGW also has the advantage that you can simply download and install the MinGW edition of Qt and don't need to reconfigure or recompile anything.
Also, trying out QtCreator might be interesting. It's still beta and requires the beta Qt 4.5 but it's a nice small IDE that integrates nicely with gcc.
Two potential solutions (they solved issues at my workplace)
Do you have qt include and bin folders in the PATH variable? I think the doc says only one of these is needed, but one of the students had Vista and putting the other in the PATH variable solved a "Cannot open include file" problem.
If you're using MSVC did you run configure and nmake from the Visual Studio command prompt? We had problems when using the bare windows Command Prompt because the VS one adds a lot of temporary environment variables to the configure process.

Install the complete Qt SDK for Windows which includes Qt 4.6 SDK, Qt Creator 1.3, and MinGW.
It will also install "Qt Command Prompt" launcher that you can use to build Qt apps from the command line.
I'm sure you're more familiar with MSVC than MinGW, as I do too (I've been using MSVC 6.0 to MSVC# 2008 for developing .NET apps).
But try MinGW with Qt and I think it's better for long term. I do some C++ development on Linux too so getting familiar with MinGW will be beneficial for you in cross-platform C++/Qt development.

Qmake generates Makefile from *.pro file located in current directory. It has qt path compiled in. Type "qmake -v" to see it. You can't move qt's dir after compiling it. If You haven't moved it, first maybe try to install Qt following instruction from INSTALL file. Good luck.
The opensource version of Qt does not provide profiles (mkspecs in qt terms) so qmake can generate nmake (msvc) compatible makefiles.
You have to use mingw/gcc.
