Make windows 8 display the "How do you want to open" dialog? - windows

For example, when you open Chrome, if it is not the default browser you can press a button that will show Windows' dialog prompting you to choose how you want to open http links. Does anyone know how I can achieve this?

I found the solution to this:
C:\windows\system32\openwith.exe "procotol://or/file/to/choose/handler"

You simply right click on the file you want to open, and you should get the option Open with if you hover over it you should get some option of applications that you can open the file with. If you do not like any of the applications it listed, click on Choose default program... and you will get a more populated list, and the application you choose will be set as your default application for opening that kind of file.

Windows Shell Desktop Preview

I've installed Rainmeter with Honeycomb and want only a simple Icon, which will act like the Windows "Show Desktop" Button in the right corner.
Well so far so good, I've got it working, that when I click on the Icon my Desktop will show up and the rest will be minimized:
...
LeftMouseUpAction=["shell:::{3080F90D-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257}"]
...
Well now I want that when I hover over it, the preview will be shown:
MouseOverAction=[" Insert Magic --> Here <-- "]
Well this is my Problem, if anybody knows which Shell Command this is, or how it could be achieved, pls share your ideas with me.
It might not be a good way, but you can do this:
Open up the folder where the ini file of the skin is.
Right click anywhere on the blank portion of the window and select New>Shortcut.
A dialog box will appear, asking you to locate the file the shortcut should point to.
Inside the text box, paste this:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{3080F90D-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257}
Click next. The dialog box will ask you to put a name for the shortcut. Put any name you like and press Finish to create the shortcut.
Replace the LeftMouseUpAction line with this:
LeftMouseUpAction=!Execute ["#CURRENTPATH#"name of your shortcut".lnk"]
For example, if your shortcut's name is launch, then the line should be
LeftMouseUpAction=!Execute ["#CURRENTPATH#launch.lnk"]
You're good to go!

Force open button for XML file download in Internet Explorer

We are looking for a client-side way to force Internet Explorer to show the Open button when downloading an XML file.
Normally the download bar looks like this:
When downloading an XML file, however, no "Open" button is shown:
How to configure IE/Windows in a way that the "Open" button is shown for each file download?
I've already read about the X-Download-Options HTTP header, unfortunately, we must look for a client-side solution as we cannot alter the web application.
We found out the following: Windows had associated the file type "xml" with Internet Explorer (control panel -> default programs -> set associations). This triggers IE to not show the Open button anymore, we don't know why exactly, however, when associating xml with Notepad, the Open button reappears.
If anyone has a better solution to always force the Open button pleas come forward. In the meantime we are going to use this workaround.

File chooser in a default Cocoa application

I have created a default [Swift] Cocoa application. I attempted to Ctrl drag from the default Open button in the menu to my View Controller in the assistant editor, but nothing happens.
Is my approach wrong? I assume there is some kind of default file chooser dialog, but I do not know how to make it appear or enable the Open menu item. From the documentation I feel I could make one appear programmatically, but I want to enable the menu button.
My first attempt at an OS X program hit a wall very fast :-/
First, control-Click on Open, and see if it is already attached to a function. If so, click the x to detach it, then try again.
Second, be very sure that the Assistant Editor is presenting the correct file to do the control-Drag. I have found that I need to manually choose the correct file much of the time.

How do i open a file via terminal with a specific editor?

How do i set a default application to open a file with my preferred text editor? I am currently trying open file.rb. It opens text wrangler, but I want to open with another. How do i do this?
Go to finder, right click on your file.rb file and select Get Info.
In the Info Window you'll see a section that says Open with, expand that section. There you can change the default application to open that particular file. There's also a button labeled Change All... This button allows you to use the specified application for all similar filetypes (*.rb).
You want to use the name of the editor you want to open with, i.e. gedit file.rb, or vim file.rb. You can probably also change your default editor associated with that file type, depending on your OS, etc.

Open Dialog preserving settings

How does one preserve the settings in the Open Dialog box? For example, I would the Open Dialog to remember that I chose the Details view and sorted by date modified.
Microsoft didn't see fit to give us any documented way of doing this, but some people have figured out bits of the puzzle. This link shows how to set the view, but not how to get the current setting:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc164009.aspx
I'm not quite sure about this about isn't it an OS setting. If the user choose their Folder Preferences such as then Windows will remember or not. In this case from accessibility and usability point of view this is User's preferences.
You could inherit from the dialog's class and then see what can be overriden to do the persistence of its state.
Simple non-technical solution.
This worked for me (WinXP SP3) in some cases but not all. Since you don't have the option of changing things in a common Open dialog, you can try to do it in Windows Explorer.
Open Windows Eplorer. If you want to change the sort order, go to the details view and click on the column to sort, normally Name, but you may want to sort by Date. Now change
the view back to whatever you want. Now select "Tools" then "Folder Options". On the General tab, for "Tasks" select "Use Windows classic folders," for "Browse folders" select "Open each folder in same window." Now click the "View" tab. Scroll down and check the box for "Remember each folders view settings." If it's already checked, uncheck it then check it again. Click the "Apply" Button at the botton of the window. Click the "Apply to All Folders" button near the top. These settings may show up in your Open dialog. Having done this you can now change the settings in Windows Explorer or any other Folder window that allows you to change them and that Folder window should remember them. This fixed the Open dialog in my qraphics editor but not in my video editor.
