<f:viewParam> not setting value to bean - jsf-2.2

I want to implement a simple PRG approach which for some reason is not working as per my expectation. Please help.
1) I do a POST from firstpage.xhtml
<p:column>
<p:menuButton value="#{i18n['actions']}">
<p:menuitem value="#{i18n['edit-course']}" icon="ui-icon-pencil" ajax="false"
action="#{courseDesignerBackingBean.navigateToEditCourse(course.courseId)}" />
<p:menuitem value="#{i18n['delete-course']}" icon="ui-icon-trash" ajax="false"/>
</p:menuButton>
</p:column>
2) Here, I am handling the action and making redirect.
public String navigateToEditCourse(long courseId){
String outcome = "editCourse?faces-redirect=true" + "&courseId=" + courseId;
System.out.println(outcome);
return outcome;
}
3) In page editCourse.xhtml, I am reading the request parameters.
<f:metadata>
<f:viewParam name="courseId" value="#{courseModelBean.courseId}"/>
<f:event listener="#{courseDesignerBackingBean.updateModelBeanByCourseId}" type="preRenderView"/>
</f:metadata>
My expectation on 3rd step was that first setCourseId() of courseModelBean would have got called followed by courseDesignerBackingBean.updateModelBeanByCourseId. But, setCourseId() of courseModelBean is not getting called.
Any hints?
Best regards,
Anand.

JSF form validation skip specific validator for second submit when user wants to override

I am validating a user entered account number using two validators, one for basic standard format, and the other that validates the account number against values stored in a database. The database of valid account numbers may not always be up to date so I want to allow the user to override and submit their entered account number but only after the database validation has failed. I always want to validate its standard format 8 characters with no spaces.
<h:form id="formId">
<p:panelGrid>
<p:row>
<p:column>
<p:outputLabel value="Account : " for="acct" />
</p:column>
<p:column>
<p:selectOneMenu id="acct" value="#{bean.acct.acctNum}" effect="fold" editable="true" validator="acctLengthAndSpaceValidator" required="true" requiredMessage="Required">
<f:selectItems value="#{bean.mySavedAccounts}" var="acct"
itemLabel="#{acct.acctNumber} itemValue="#{acct.acctNumber}" />
<o:validator validatorId="accountDatabaseValidator" disabled="#{bean.skipDbValidation}" />
</p:selectOneMenu>
</p:column>
<p:column>
<p:messages for="acct" showDetail="true" skipDetailIfEqualsSummary="true" />
</p:column>
</p:row>
</p:panelGrid>
<br />
<p:selectBooleanCheckbox rendered="#{facesContext.validationFailed}" value="#{bean.skipDbValidation}" itemLabel="I know this account is really valid, please skip validation and let me submit!">
<p:ajax update="#this" listener="#{bean.testListener()}" />
</p:selectBooleanCheckbox>
<p:commandButton value="Submit" action="#{bean.submit()}" update="formId"/>
</h:form>
The checkbox does appear after the form is initially submitted and has any validation failure (I will figure out how to isolate to just the failed accountDatabaseValidator). But then when I select the checkbox, and submit again, both validators are still fired. I added the ajax listener to debug, and it isn't firing and the boolean value skipDbValidation is still false.
Perhaps my approach is not correct in achieving my concrete goal of validating against the database but then giving the user the option of skipping the db validation after initial failure.
EDIT
if i remove rendered="#{facesContext.validationFailed}" from the checkbox and have it visible all the time, the boolean skipDbValidation will get set to true if the checkbox is checked and then on subsequent submit, the skipDbValidation is ignored as expected. But I do not want the checkbox allowing the user to bypass visible at first. Only after validation fails.
The technical explanation that this doesn't work is that the rendered attribute is re-evaluated during processing the form submit. At this point the faces context is not validationFailed anymore (it was only validationFailed during the previous request) and thus the component is not rendered anymore and then the component's submitted value won't be applied. This matches #6 of commandButton/commandLink/ajax action/listener method not invoked or input value not set/updated.
Your work around by rendering it client-side rather than server-side is acceptable. But I gather that you wanted to show it only when the specific validator has been invoked. There are at least 2 ways to achieve this:
Check UIInput#isValid() of the input component of interest. You can achieve that by binding the component to the view (not to the bean!) via component's binding attribute so you can reference it elsewhere in the same view.
<p:selectOneMenu binding="#{acct}" ...>
...
</p:selectOneMenu>
...
<p:selectBooleanCheckbox styleClass="#{acct.valid ? 'ui-helper-hidden' : ''}" ...>
...
</p:selectBooleanCheckbox>
Note that I took the opportunity to reuse the PrimeFaces-provided style class.
Or, make the validator a view scoped bean and reference it via <o:validator binding> instead.
#Named
#ViewScoped
public class AccountDatabaseValidator implements Validator, Serializable {
private boolean validationFailed;
#Override
public void validate(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, Object value) throws ValidatorException {
// ...
validationFailed = !isValid(value);
if (validationFailed) {
throw new ValidatorException(createError("Invalid value"));
}
}
public boolean isValidationFailed() {
return validationFailed;
}
}
<p:selectOneMenu ...>
<o:validator binding="#{accountDatabaseValidator}" ... />
</p:selectOneMenu>
...
<p:selectBooleanCheckbox rendered="#{accountDatabaseValidator.validationFailed}" ...>
...
</p:selectBooleanCheckbox>
My work around to get the checkbox to programmatically display and so the checkbox would function was to hide and display using CSS instead of the render attribute.
style="#{facesContext.validationFailed ? 'Display: inline' : 'Display: none;'}"
<p:selectBooleanCheckbox style="#{facesContext.validationFailed ? 'Display: inline' : 'Display: none;'}" value="#{bean.skipDbValidation}" itemLabel="I know this account is really valid, please skip validation and let me submit!">
<p:ajax update="#this" />
</p:selectBooleanCheckbox>
But I still can't figure out how to display the checkbox for a specific validation failure.
I will post another question for that
EDIT
Here is how I ended up displaying the checkbox only after the Invalid Account validation failure.
<p:selectBooleanCheckbox style="#{facesContext.messageList.stream()
.anyMatch(v -> v.summary == 'Invalid Account') or
bean.skipDbValidation ? 'Display: inline' : 'Display: none;'}"
value="#{bean.skipDbValidation}" itemLabel="I know this account is really valid, please skip validation and let me submit!">
<p:ajax update="#this" />
</p:selectBooleanCheckbox>

What URL should I use in $.ajax() in order to submit a form

Working in JSF2 and ajax, i can't figure out what's the value of the $.ajax URL attribute in JSF context as i want to submit a form and update a div staying in the same page
Is it the following?
((HttpServletRequest) facesContext.getExternalContext().getRequest()).getContextPath()`
in my opinion you need pass value to the backing bean and set the parameter, after this you need to update this part (div).
see this http://www.mkyong.com/jsf2/4-ways-to-pass-parameter-from-jsf-page-to-backing-bean/
<p:commandButton action="#{bean.setId}" update="div">
<f:attribute name="id" value="12" />
</p:commandButton>
Another way is using flash, see this: https://javaserverfaces.java.net/nonav/docs/2.0/javadocs/javax/faces/context/Flash.html
lets say you have a form like this:
<div id="yourDivId">
<h:outputText value='#{yourControllerClass.yourAttribute}'></h:outputText>
</div>
<h:form>
<h:commandButton value="update">
<f:ajax execute="#form" listener="#{yourControllerClass.updateAttribute}"
render=":yourDiveId">
</f:ajax>
</h:commandButton>
</h:form>
in your ControllerClass/bean:
public final void updateAttribute(AjaxBehaviorEvent event){
// do what ever you want, get values, set another values, after that your Div will be auto updated
}
this way, you don't need to care about ajax params or URL...etc.
EDIT:
if you want to get a paramater from a request URL, then you can get it like this:
String paramVal = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRequestParameterMap().get(key);

Can you update an h:outputLabel from a p:ajax listener?

I'm trying to use a p:ajax tag and then in that listener, i'm setting a value called "periodRendered". then i'm trying to update an h:outputLabel tag via an update from the p:ajax tag. It's not updating ajaxily and i'm thinking it's because a primefaces ajax tag can't update a standard jsf outputLabel tag.
Is my assumption correct and is there a more appropriate tag i should be using instead of h:outputLabel ?
<h:outputLabel for="addProgramTo" value="Add Program To" />
<p:selectOneMenu value="#{ppBacker.grantProgram.grant_project_id}" id="addProgramTo" size="1" styleClass="listBoxMedium">
<p:ajax process=":addProgram:addProgramTo" update=":addProgram:periodGrid, :addProgram:periodLabel" event="change" listener="#{ppBacker.addProgramListener}" />
<f:selectItems value="#{ppBacker.grantProjectDropDownList}" />
</p:selectOneMenu>
<h:outputLabel for="period" value="Period" id="periodLabel" rendered="#{ppBacker.periodRendered}">
You cannot update elements which are not rendered , rendered=false "is a JSF way to" to remove elements from the DOM Tree ,
its not like css display:none or visibility:hidden <- this two will keep the elements in the DOM tree but hidden , while the JSF rendered=false wont even render (keep) the element in the DOM tree (you wont even see it in the "view source" of the page)
So in you case you need to wrap the outputLabel with `panelGroup' and update the id of the wrapper
<h:panelGroup id="periodLabelWrapper">
<h:outputLabel for="period" value="Period" id="periodLabel" rendered="#{ppBacker.periodRendered}">
</h:panelGroup>
and refer to the wrapper (which always be in the DOM tree) id in the <p:ajax update attribute, like this:
<p:ajax process=":addProgram:addProgramTo" update=":addProgram:periodGrid, :addProgram:periodLabelWrapper" event="change" listener="#{ppBacker.addProgramListener}" />
Another solution would be the update the entire form like this <p:ajax update="#form" ... that way you don't need the wrap the outputLabel
regarding your comment question
how does #form update the un-rendered elements, but targeting them directly through id's does not?
You can't target an element in update which is not present in the page (rendered=false) "its not there"
But when you use update="#form" or update="someWrapperID" the form/wrapper "re evaluates" all its inner elements , including the ones with rendered="#{someBean.someCondition}" and the condition gets "re evaluated" so if it result to true the elemet will be displayed...
I'm not sure the reason for this behavior, but I'm putting money on the fact that p:ajax is going to require an active target for the update to work. Here's an example of it working/not working:
<h:body styleClass="center">
<f:view contentType="text/html">
<h:form id="test">
<h:outputLabel for="addProgramTo" value="Add Program To: " />
<h:selectOneMenu id="addProgramTo" value="#{testScope.target}">
<p:ajax update=":test:periodLabel, :test:wrapper" event="change" process="#form">
</p:ajax>
<f:selectItems value="#{testScope.values}"/>
</h:selectOneMenu>
<hr />
<p:outputPanel id="wrapper">
<h:outputLabel value="Works, has a target" rendered="#{testScope.timeToRender}"/>
</p:outputPanel>
<hr />
<h:outputLabel value="does not work" id="periodLabel" rendered="#{testScope.timeToRender}" />
</h:form>
</f:view>
</h:body>
//Bean...
#ViewScoped
#ManagedBean(name = "testScope")
public class TestScope
{
private String[] values = { "False", "What?", "True" };
private String target = "Nothing";
/**
* #return the target
*/
public String getTarget()
{
return target;
}
/**
* #return the values
*/
public String[] getValues()
{
System.out.println(values);
return values;
}
public boolean isTimeToRender()
{
return "True".equals(target);
}
/**
* #param target the target to set
*/
public void setTarget(String target)
{
this.target = target;
}
}
I don't have the time to dig into this one, but from a quick look (again QUICK) in the debugger it looks like it doesn't find the ID (it isn't rendered) so it doesn't get the update. Why? I'm not sure--the easy workaround is to place it inside something you can update (p:outputPanel) and render it as a span, then your code should work. Is this acceptable? Not really...
If you can deal with a full form update the following will work as well ->
<p:ajax update=":test" event="change" process="#form">
Since you're targeting the enclosing form it updates all the children. If I was doing this, that is the workaround I'd use. It isn't a lot of data and it is a heck of a lot cleaner. I'm not sure if this a bug or a feature. It feels buggy though.
Short answer: yes you can target a label. Long answer: you can't target one that isn't rendered. I really hope this helps.

Updating a checkbox from a radio button

I am trying to add ajax behavior to selectoneradio with this code:
xhtml:
<h:selectOneRadio id="metalA" converter="metalConverter" value="#{backingBean.metal.metalCode">
<f:selectItems value="#{backingBean.metalCodeRadio}" />
<f:ajax listener="#{backingBean.updateMenu}" event="click" execute="metalA" render="metalTypeMenuA"/>
</h:selectOneRadio>
<p:outputPanel id="panelA">
<h:selectOneMenu id="metalTypeMenuA" converter="metalConverter" value="#{backingBean.order.metal}" rendered="#{teklifIslemleriBean.selectedITip == 1}">
<f:selectItems value="#{backingBean.metalDetailsMenu}" />
</h:selectOneMenu>
</p:outputPanel>
backing bean:
MetalCode selectedMK = null;
public void updateMenu(AjaxBehaviorEvent event) {
System.out.println("Entered to updateMenu method");
if (metal.getMetalKod()!= null) {
electedMK = aMetal.getMetalCode();
}
if (selectedMK != null) {
// metalTypeMenuA Combobox
List<Metal> metalList = aService.getAccToMetalCode(null, selectedMK);
System.out.println("MetalList:" + metalList.size());
metalTypeMenuA.clear();
for (Metal m : metalList) {
metalTypeMenuA.add(new SelectItem(m, "No:" + m.getMetalNo() + " ,Weight: " + m.getWeight();
}
}
}
However it does not even enter to the updateMenu method. instead of click I tried select, change, etc. I also tried to put a wrapper panel and update it instead of checkbox, still no good. What is wrong with above code? Is updating a checkbox with a change in radiobutton doable? Thanks in advance.
JSF 2.0 Primefaces 2.2.1
EDIT:
I added following
<h:message for="metalA" id="messaged"/>
<f:ajax listener="#{backingBean.updateMenu}" event="click" execute="metalKoduA" execute="metalA" render="messaged orderPG2"/>
orderPG2 is a wrapper around checkbox. But still I can get any error message in h:message or any ajax behavior is happening.
The render attribute of <f:ajax> should not point to a component which is by itself conditionally server-side rendered by rendered attribtue. Let it point to the closest parent which is always rendered instead.
<f:ajax listener="#{backingBean.updateMenu}" render="panelA" />
(note that I removed event="click" and execute="metalA" as those are the defaults already)
If that still doesn't work, then you'd need to read the server logs for any missing faces messages. Big change that you'll see a Validation Error: "Value is not valid" or perhaps a conversion error. To prevent those messages from being missed during ajax rendering, ensure that you're using <h:message> and/or <h:messages> the right way and that you also include them in the render of the <f:ajax>.
<h:selectOneRadio id="metalA" ...>
...
<f:ajax ... render="metalAmessage panelA" />
</h:selectOneRadio>
<h:message id="metalAmessage" for="metalA" />

How to call several methods with JSF <f:ajax listener?

Good Afternoon,
I have a search page that uses ajax to render a several datatables without refreshing the page.
It is mandatory for me to call a Method as a Listener for each table.
Below is the snippet for the first datatable that works fine.
To render a second datatable I need to call a method #{evalController.prepareList} as a Listener for the ajax. The problem is that <f:ajax "Listener" attribute won't take more than one method.
So the remaining way is to call <f:ajax several times, and each time with a different listener, which does not work. Is there a way to achieve this?
If not, should I create a method in the managed Bean that calls all the methods that I need and use it as the one listener?
Thanks in advance for your help.
<h:form id="searchform">
<h:panelGrid columns="3" >
<p:inputText value="#{ddnController.patientID}" id="pidinput" maxlength="7" size="7">
<f:ajax execute="#this" event="keyup" render="searchbutton ddntable" listener="#{ddnController.prepareList}"/>
</p:inputText>
<h:commandButton image="#{resource['images/search.png']}" id="searchbutton" value="#{bundle.Search}"
action="submit" actionListener="#{ddnController.prepareList}"
disabled="#{empty ddnController.patientID or ddnController.patientID.equals('0')}"/>
<p:panel><h:outputText value="Saisir 0 pour avoir tous les Patients" style="font-style: italic;"/></p:panel>
</h:panelGrid>
<p:dataTable id="ddntable" value="#{ddnController.items}" var="ddn" rendered="#{!empty ddnController.items}" paginator="true" >....
I am still not sure why the composite method do not have effect when called. Probably it is not called during before or after the right phase (I'll be profiling it later). Anyway, I found a solution with two edges (it is solving my problem but makes me sacrifice the use of ajax) :
So Instead of calling - from each managed bean - the method (prepareList()) which I use as listener:
private DataModel items = null; // Getter to retrieve items
// ......
public String prepareList() {
recreatemodel();
return "List";
}
private void recreatemodel(){
items=null;
}
(by the way, this method sets the datamodel to NULL to refresh it, and that is how my datatables get refreshed).
Inside the command button I nested property action listener:
<h:commandButton image="#{resource['images/search.png']}" id="searchbutton" value="#{bundle.Search}"
action="submit"
disabled="#{empty ddnController.patientID or ddnController.patientID.equals('0')}">
<f:PropertyActionListener target="#{ddnController.items}" value="#{null}" />
<f:PropertyActionListener target="#{evalController.items}" value="#{null}" />
<f:PropertyActionListener target="#{corController.items}" value="#{null}" />
<!--...etc -->
</h:commandButton>
I wish <f:PropertyActionListener /> could be nested inside <h:ajax/>.
If somebody has a solution that allows to use property action listener and ajax to avoid submitting the form with a button, s/he is welcome. I'll make then his/her answer as accepted.
