I did ./configure to make a makefile
but it ran into an error: configure :error: No usable version of sed found:
I then typed which see
it shows /usr/bin/sed.
so, what's wrong? why can't ./configure find sed?
I happened to have this problem on my mac. This is because OS X uses an old version of sed. Installing gnu-sed by brew install gnu-sed and alias gsed=sed solved this problem. You may install gnu-sed with other method.

I'm trying to install vcftools on mac. Looking at previous posts on this issue, I made sure I've got Mac OS X developer tools (http://www.cnet.com/how-to/install-command-line-developer-tools-in-os-x/). I followed the procedure recommended in the official documantion (https://vcftools.github.io/examples.html). When I run from the command line:
./configure.ac
I get the following errors:
./configure.ac: line 4: syntax error near unexpected token [2.63]'
./configure.ac: line 4:AC_PREREQ([2.63])'
If I try:
./configure
It says:
-bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
as indeed there in no ./configure when I inspect the contents with:
ls
Can anyone point out where I am doing wrong. I've tried resources such as 'homebrew' but I didn't help.
Thanks a lot.
you can download it from
git clone https://github.com/vcftools/vcftools.git
cd vcftools
you will need to install autoconf, pkg-config, libtools, automake, and zlib.
run
./autogen.sh
then
./configure
follow the instructions here: https://github.com/vcftools/vcftools
I was having the same issue. Basically you need to install automake. This can be done using
brew install automake

My mac is having MacOS 10.12.4 (Sierra). And I have installed homebrew using command line. This is what look like when I run "brew config" command.
Then I wanted to install class-dump using following command.
"brew install class-dump". But when it gives me following error. Can some one tell me the reason and what should I do?
I was able to solve the problem by installing class-dump manually without using home brew. I downloaded the class-dump in using this link. Then copy the class-dump file to the following location "/usr/local/bin". Then all works fine
Here is a one liner for the lazy people if you already have wget:
$ wget -qO- http://stevenygard.com/download/class-dump-3.5.tar.gz | tar xvz - -C /usr/local/bin
I am trying to install ROOT (cern.root.ch). When I run ./configure , I get a message that libX11 is missing and must be installed.
I did some research and found that I need to install
) XQuartz (I already have the latest version.)
) Command line tools in Xcode.
I tried installing Command Line Tools from apple's developer website. The installation goes through smoothly but how do I know whether it has been installed? I still get libX11 missing error with root's configure command.
I also tried xcode-select --install and it once went through smoothly and then later again gives error saying this package is no longer maintained - or something of that sort.
I understand I may have multiple installations... But I am still facing the problem of not having libX11 and not being able to install ROOT.
Thanks,
Hershal.
This link and the one referenced in it suggests you use homebrew (brew) to install it
$ ruby <(curl -fsS https://raw.github.com/mxcl/homebrew/go)
$ brew doctor
Remember to add the Homebrew directory to your PATH by adding the directory (found with brew --prefix) to your .bashrc, .zshrc or whatever shell file you’re using (.bashrc is the OS X default). We’ll also add the XQuartz binaries to the PATH in case anything needs them in the future.
export PATH=/usr/local/bin:/opt/X11/bin:$PATH
Start a new Terminal session to pick up the changes.
Now that Homebrew is installed, we can use it to install the required dependencies. Each may take some time as Homebrew generally compiles from source.
$ brew install gfortran # Fortran compiler
$ brew install python # Python interpreter
$ brew install pcre # Regular Expressions library
$ brew install fftw # Fast Fourier Transforms
$ brew install cmake # Cross-platform make
install root
$ brew tap homebrew/science
$ brew install --with-cocoa root
You don't say whether you have installed XCode as well as the commandline tools but I think you will need it
I am trying to install Apache (by compilation)on my mac Lion.
Every time, I try to compile pcre, I get these two errors :
configure: error: pcre-config for libpcre not found. PCRE is required and available from http://pcre.org/
or
"Did not find prce-config script at"
I know I have this pcre-config file.
(I put http-2.4.1 and pcre-8.30 in Documents / Tried another location in MyUsername/Test/ >> same result >> it didn't work either).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Edit :
I copied http-2.4.1 and pcre-8.30 in "/"
then I cded to /pcre-8.30
then I issued ./configure >> Got no error.
then I cded /http-2.4.1
then I issued ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache_2.2. --with-pcre=/pcre-8.30
Got 1 error configure: error: Did not find pcre-config script at /pcre-8.30
I do not understand what "Install prefix .................. : /usr/local" means (in the pcre-8.30 configuration summary). I can't see any pcre file in this directory.
I got apache 2.4.1 to configure by doing the following (note i am running lion v 10.7.3)
I downloaded pcre and ran (Note: by default pcre will install into /usr/local)
$ ./configure
$ make
$ make install
setup httpd-2.4.1 with the following command
$./configure --prefix=/usr/local --with-pcre=/usr/local
$ make
$ make install
Test
$ usr/local/bin/apachectl start
This appeared to work for me hopefully it works for you
You can also install Homebrew from http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/, and then
brew install pcre
It does not need root access.
And then run the ./configure.
Maybe you not install PCRE correctly. Please try this:
Install PCRE
Nginx requires PCRE – Perl Compatible Regular Expressions to build, I used PCRE version 8.13. In a Terminal, run:
sudo curl -OL h ftp://ftp.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/software/programming/pcre/pcre-8.13.tar.gz > /usr/local/src/pcre-8.13.tar.gz
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/src
cd /usr/local/src
tar xvzf pcre-8.13.tar.gz
cd pcre-8.13
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make
sudo make install
cd ..
That is what I am trying...
I still couldn't get it to work using jfleong's answer. I came across fink, which you can download here http://www.finkproject.org/download/srcdist.php
After it was all installed, I ran:
$ fink install pcre
And then continued with installing apache and just using
$ ./configure
Without any flags. After I did all of that it finally was able to finish installing. Hope this helps!
I'm trying to compile gearman-0.28 on Mac, but encountered the following error:
configure: error: Unable to find libuuid
I don't know how to install libuuid on Mac, my Mac is 10.7.2 version.
Any one can help me? Thanks in advance.
With Homebrew:
brew install ossp-uuid
For those who are trying to install the uuid extension from PECL, the ossp-uuid and the util-linux's uuid package shipped with Mac OSX will not work as they are out dated. You will need an updated version of uuid from util-linux. It is available on Homebrew.
brew install util-linux
But util-linux is a keg-only package and will not be symlinked to /usr/local. Hence you will have to specify the following path when prompted for uuid installation directory
/usr/local/opt/util-linux
For unattended installations, you can use
printf "/usr/local/opt/util-linux" | pecl install uuid
Install mac port like
sudo port install ossp-uuid
$configure --with-lib
As time goes by, it seems worthwhile to mention that libuuid has become part of macOS in the meantime.
If you want an up to date alternative to the brew or mac ports solutions, the following from here works great. You can also add the code to your .zshrc or .bash_profile
$ alias uuid="python -c 'import sys,uuid; sys.stdout.write(uuid.uuid4().hex)' | pbcopy && pbpaste && echo"
$ uuid
