I have configured jBoss 7.1.1 final for datasource and used it in spring by JNDI. Everything is working fine , datasource is up and JMS queue is setup. Now I have to run a batch which will fetch records from DB and put it in JMS(already started instance) . I have to use same datasource which is configured in server but the record fetching program is a normal java program and I am using same configuration as defined in my spring-servlet.xml
<bean id="TransactionalDataSource" class="org.springframework.jndi.JndiObjectFactoryBean">
<property name="jndiName" value="java:/comp/env/jdbc/FRMWRKPOC_DEV"></property>
</bean>
<!-- Hibernate Session Factory -->
<bean id="sessionFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean">
<property name="dataSource" ref="TransactionalDataSource"/>
<property name="packagesToScan">
<list>
<value>entities</value>
</list>
</property>
<property name="hibernateProperties">
<props>
<prop key="dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.Oracle10gDialect</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.show_sql">true</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.connection.autocommit">false</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.current_session_context_class">thread</prop>
</props>
</property>
</bean>
The java code to get sessionFactory is as follows:
ApplicationContext context = new ClassPathXmlApplicationContext("beans.xml");
SessionFactory factory = (SessionFactory)context.getBean("sessionFactory");
return factory;
But it is giving me following error:
javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial
If some kind of initial context setup is required then please guide me and also tell me is it possible to get the datasource instance if the application is not running on server though server is already started(because it is normal PSVM java code)
Please find below the complete stacktrace
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'NonTransactionalDataSource' defined in class path resource [beans.xml]: Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial

As you are using it as a normal Java program, you have to provide details to Spring on how to access the JNDI by providing required properties. For JBOSS you can declare it like this:
<bean id="TransactionalDataSource" class="org.springframework.jndi.JndiObjectFactoryBean">
<property name="jndiName" value="java:/comp/env/jdbc/FRMWRKPOC_DEV"></property>
<property name="jndiEnvironment">
<props>
<prop key="java.naming.factory.initial">org.jnp.interfaces.NamingContextFactory</prop>
<prop key="java.naming.provider.url">localhost:1099</prop>
<prop key="java.naming.factory.url.pkgs">org.jboss.naming:org.jnp.interfaces</prop>
<props>
</property>
</bean>
I would suggest to write simple java program or jsp to read from JNDI. It looks like you need to pass authentication (principal & credential) and authorization (I think its optional) inforamtion while conncting to JNDI.

I'm developing an application using JPA 2.1 with spring 4.0.2. Jboss server provides a JNDI Datasource.
I've defined this entityManager in services.xml in order to avoid the use of a persistence.xml file:

I'm msising something? i've tried several changes in this configuration but nothing seems to work. Maybe LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean is not right supported on JBoss EAP 6.2?
Finally i got the problem: In a older version of the project there was a persistence.xml defined that was deployed in JBoss for days, even when a clean deploy was made (i guess this was beacause a file system malfunction). This make the JBoss loader to mess up with entityManagers defined in both persistence.xml and services.xml.
To integrate spring and hibernate I added the sessionFactory bean into the applicationContext.xml.
Intitally I used org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.LocalSessionFactoryBean and given the mapping resource as test.hbm.xml file.
Now I want to use the annotated entity class as mapping resource. For that I have changed the sessionFactory class to org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean.
applicationContext.xml
<bean id="sessionFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean">
<property name="dataSource" ref="dataSource"/>
<property name="annotatedClasses">

<property name="hibernateProperties">

<prop key="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto">update</prop>
</props>
</property>

Is something I am missing?
Thanks
I am trying to run a hello world for: Spring/Hibernate with HSQLDB and C3PO connection pool.
the same code works with mySQL (only with different dialect and driver)
I have run the database and I can connect to it with the swing GUI. But when I try to run my application, I am getting a start up error.
Here are the details:
1: the error -

As far as I can tell, it is not possible to pass in the dialect as a value set on the hibernateProperties field of a Spring Session Factory, at least if you are also using the configLocation property on it.
My hibernate.cfg.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE hibernate-configuration PUBLIC "-//Hibernate/Hibernate Configuration DTD 3.0//EN" "http://hibernate.sourceforge.net/hibernate-configuration-3.0.dtd">
<hibernate-configuration>
<session-factory>
<property name="hibernate.dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.DB2Dialect</property>
<property name="hibernate.search.autoregister_listeners">false</property>
[etc...]
My relevant session factory context config:
<bean id="sessionFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate4.LocalSessionFactoryBean">
<property name="configLocation">
<value>classpath:hibernate.cfg.xml</value>
</property>
<property name="dataSource" ref="dataSource"/>
<property name="hibernateProperties">
<props>
<!--<prop key="hibernate.dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.DB2Dialect</prop>-->
<prop key="hibernate.show_sql">true</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.format_sql">true</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.generate_statistics">false</prop>
<prop key="hibernate.default_schema">xxx</prop>
</props>
</property>
</bean>
If I uncomment the dialect prop in the context file, and comment it out from in the hibernate.cfg.xml file I encounter the same exception as the OP:
Caused by: org.hibernate.HibernateException: Connection cannot be null when 'hibernate.dialect' not set
However if I run with the above configuration (commented out in the context file, uncommented in the hibernate.cfg.xml), it works, and I see the formatted hibernate SQL, showing that the other hibernate properties are being set by the context file.
I have session factory properties with hibernate. prefix.
<property name="hibernateProperties">
<value>
hibernate.dialect=org.hibernate.dialect.HSQLDialect
hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=update
hibernate.show_sql=false
hibernate.format_sql=false
</value>
</property>
During upgrading to Hibernate 4 from its 3.v, I run into this problem occurred at the TC starting up.

How to solve this problem?
Please replace org.springframework.orm.hibernate4.LocalSessionFactoryBuilder instead of org.springframework.orm.hibernate4.LocalSessionFactoryBean. This might help.
it's maybe a spring issue.
you can change
<property name="annotatedClasses">
to
<property name="packagesToScan"
and try it again
this may be a stale jar file issue, i ran with the same error
then in my log file i found Could not obtain connection metadata : DatabaseMetaData information is not known for server DB2/LINUXX8664SQL09010 by this version of JDBC driver
then i replaced my this project db2 jar files with one running project jars and it starts running smoothly
I was facing similar issue in my code. Then i tried updating the recent versions of DB2 jars into my server and the code started working. Try to update your DB2 jar.
My spring bean data base connection myDataSource is as follows. and i am getting exception
how can i solve this exception. the RoomUser is in correct location.
i try to change the tags, but now use.
<bean id="mySessionFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean">
<property name="dataSource" ref="myDataSource" />
<property name="annotatedClasses">
<list>

There is problem with your model class only. spring is not able to find class RoomUser in your application-context.xml file
<list>
<value>com.room.user.beans.RoomUser</value>
<value>com.room.user.beans.RoomUserType</value>
</list>
I was also facing same problem. check whether RoomUser is in correct package ?
Similiar concept with the answer above.
Use mvn clean to clear the target directory, and run the application again so that the ApplicationContext can be reloaded.
