Eloquent conditional where filter - laravel

If I have a variable that is optional, and I only want to have it search on it if it is defined, I know that I can do this, but is there a way to define the function elsewhere, so I don't need to rewrite the same anonymous function over and over again? Or are the any other good alternatives to going about solving this problem?

Since Laravel 5.2.27, you can use conditional clauses
For example:
->when($gender, function($query) use ($gender) {
return $query->where('gender', '=', $gender);
})
->get();

You could use a dynamic scope
class User extends Eloquent {
public function scopeGender($query, $gender)
{
if ($gender) {
return $query->whereGender($gender);
}
return $query;
}
}
Then throughout your application
...->gender($gender)->get();

How to improve multiple eloquent conditions?

Here is a default eloquent condition:
if($request->has("parent")) => {
Specializatio::where('id', $request->id)
->when($request->parentid, function($query) use ($request){

It grows up so fast into long list of conditions .when based request object. Is there any flexibale mechanism to manage it, maybe devide in another class, helper?
Maybe query scopes and short hand functions will make your code a bit cleaner.

Eloquent `with()` with filtering based on relation

I have this tables.
And this model relations, this relations works fine.
class Item extends Model
{
public function translations()
{
return $this->hasMany(ItemTranslations::class);
}
}
class ItemTranslation extends Model
{
public function language()
{
return $this->belongsTo(Language::class);
}
}
I need to return a list of items with the translations, but only the translations related to a specific language.
I can't have this query working, im getting all translations of each item, not only the one filtered with this query. The language related to the translation is not needed on the result.
$query = Item::query();
$query->with('translations')->when('language',function($query) use ($ISOlanguage) {
return $query->where('languages.ISO_code', '=', $ISOlanguage);
});
return $query->paginate();

So what you want to do is constraining eager loading
Item::with(["translations" => function ($query) use ($ISOlanguage) {
$query->where('language.ISO_code', $ISOlanguage);

Sort collection by relationship value

I want to sort a laravel collection by an attribute of an nested relationship.
So I query all projects (only where the project has tasks related to the current user), and then I want to sort the projects by deadline date of the task relationship.
Current code:
Project.php
public function tasks()
{
return $this->hasMany('App\Models\ProjectTask');
}
Task.php
public function project()
{
return $this->belongsTo('App\Models\Project');
}
UserController
$projects = Project->whereHas('tasks', function($query){
$query->where('user_id', Auth::user()->id);

return $project->tasks()->orderby('deadline')->first();

I don't know if im even in the right direction?

A nice clean way of doing this is with the . operator
$projects = Project::all()->load('tasks')->sortBy('tasks.deadline');
I think you need to use something like join() and then sort by whatever you need.
For exapmle:
Project::join('tasks', 'tasks.project_id', '=', 'projects.id')
->select('projects.*', DB::raw("MAX(tasks.deadline) as deadline_date"))
->groupBy('tasks.project_id')
->orderBy('deadline_date')
->get()

->orderBy('deadline')

After that you can access project properties like below
$tasks->first()->project()->xxx

Laravel query scope combination

I'm using Laravel 4.2 Query Scopes but encountered a problem.
My Model:
class SomeModel extends Eloquent {
public function scopeS1($query) {
return $query->where('field1', '=', 'S1');
}
public function scopeS2($query) {
return $query->where('field2', '=', 'S2');
}
}
Now when I do SomeModel::s1()->s2()->get(); it returns all results and doesn't filter by S1 AND S2. Note also that I have no problem when I do
SomeModel::where('field1', '=', 'S1')->where('field2', '=', 'S2')->get()
So why is query scoping and doing anything here??
Since your real scopes contain OR conditions you should use a nested where to make sure they get interpreted correctly. Laravel will wrap parentheses around.
public function scopeS1($query) {
return $query->where(function($q){
$q->where('field1', '=', 'S1')
->orWhere('foo', '=', 'bar');

// and the same for scopeS2...

Where NOT in pivot table

In Laravel we can setup relationships like so:
class User {
public function items()
{
return $this->belongsToMany('Item');
}
}
Allowing us to to get all items in a pivot table for a user:
Auth::user()->items();
However what if I want to get the opposite of that. And get all items the user DOES NOT have yet. So NOT in the pivot table.
Is there a simple way to do this?
Looking at the source code of the class Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Builder, we have two methods in Laravel that does this: whereDoesntHave (opposite of whereHas) and doesntHave (opposite of has)
// SELECT * FROM users WHERE ((SELECT count(*) FROM roles WHERE user.role_id = roles.id AND id = 1) < 1) AND ...
User::whereDoesntHave('Role', function ($query) use($id) {
$query->whereId($id);

For simple "Where not exists relationship", use this:

It's not that simple but usually the most efficient way is to use a subquery.
$items = Item::whereNotIn('id', function ($query) use ($user_id)

If this was something I did often I would add it as a scope method to the Item model.

How about left join?
Assuming the tables are users, items and item_user find all items not associated with the user 123:
DB::table('items')->leftJoin(

this should work for you
$someuser = Auth::user();
$someusers_items = $someuser->related()->lists('item_id');
$all_items = Item::all()->lists('id');
$someuser_doesnt_have_items = array_diff($all_items, $someusers_items);
Ended up writing a scope for this like so:
public function scopeAvail($query)
{
return $query->join('item_user', 'items.id', '<>', 'item_user.item_id')->where('item_user.user_id', Auth::user()->id);
}
And then call:
Items::avail()->get();
Works for now, but a bit messy. Would like to see something with a keyword like not:
Auth::user()->itemsNot();
Basically Eloquent is running the above query anyway, except with a = instead of a <>.
Maybe you can use:
