My problem is similar to [1]
I have a spring boot appplication where I save some document in elasticsearch. The index is created in a data dir in the current directory each time. I want to change this default path to a given one. How can I do that? A such a simple task takes hours to find it out.
I tried many things:
#Setting(setting="/data/elasticsearch")
In an elasticseacrh.properties and application.properties file:
path.data
spring.data.elasticsearch.path.data
Without any luck.
Adding the path with the configuration file in my application class:
#Setting(settingPath = "/home/topic/src/main/resources/elasticsearch.properties")
Set the path.data property in the file:
path.data=/Users/mimis/Desktop/data
Did the trick.
Update:
With Spring Boot 1.3.0 we can add any Elasticsearch property in the application properties files by using the spring.data.elasticsearch.properties.* prefix. For example:
spring.data.elasticsearch.properties.data.path=/path/to/data
For me (Grails / Spring Boot 1.3.3) the following configuration works better:
spring.data.elasticsearch.properties.path.data=/path/to/data
spring.data.elasticsearch.properties.path.logs=/path/to/logs
I just ran into this issue and none of the answers provided solved it , the accept answer got the wrong property which is
spring.data.elasticsearch.properties.path.data=/path/to/data
not
spring.data.elasticsearch.properties.data.path=/path/to/data
Though with this value you will have a problem because you are writing into the root of your machine ( a mac in my case) which needs an access rights which I cannot provide so the elasticsearch template will fail to start, instead you need to set the value to
spring.data.elasticsearch.properties.path.data=path/to/data
This will create the path from the context of your application which is the root directory of your project which the application already has rights to write to it

I have a springboot application and an application.properties file from which the values get fetched when the application runs. I am finding a solution to change the property values and reload it without server restart.
Using spring-cloud-config is a solution I know, but I cant use the cloud config in our application . Please suggest if there is any other way to reload the property files using springboot.
You can use archaius available at https://github.com/Netflix/archaius.
Here is how you use it.
DynamicStringProperty property = getDynamicPropertyFactoryInstance()
.getStringProperty(key, StringUtils.EMPTY);
You will have to create a wrapper now to read all values from config.properties file. Archaius reads and returns updated values from config.properties file by default.
I am trying to setup spring cloud config using local file system. However, I couldn't get it working.
Below is my application.properties file:
spring.application.name=spring-cloud-config-servers
server.port=8888
spring.profiles.active=native
spring.cloud.config.server.native.searchLocations=classpath:/config
Inside limits-service.properties, I have the following:
limits-service.minimum=4
limits-service.maximum=400
Once i run the server, i get the following. Please help in fixing it.
It might be a simple mistake of naming?
For example, your spring application name is "limit-service" while your property files are named "limits-service" and that might be why it is not reading them.
yes above one it is working, spring.applicatiom.name must be equals to the properties file(Lets say uppercase must follow uppercase of properties file as well )
I am using log4j2 in my spring boot application. This works in all respects re: excluding slf4j, including log4j2, etc.
But when the application deploys I need to customize the file for each target host. I have created an ansible role that does this. Ultimately I end up with a log4j2.xml file deployed in another directory e.g. /prod/produsrX/data/log4j2.xml.
I am using the spring-boot-maven-plugin "repackage" goal to generate an executable jar file. It doesn't seem like that should matter but it is a data point in the problem.
This was supposed to be the easiest part of the project. Always before I have just been able to set -Dlog4j.configurationFile - advice which is echoed on about 3,000 web pages and DOES NOT WORK in Spring Boot 2.1.3.
The most useful info I've found is this question. It talks about using -Dlogging.config because logging must be initialized before other properties are read. Unfortunately that didn't help either.
I did find one example that suggested specifying the above directory in a -classpath parameter to java. But that didn't help either.
Does anyone know how to get a spring boot application to read the log4j2.xml file?
The property actually has to be put into the application context (e.g. application.yml). Using a -D property does not work!
logging:
config: /prod/produsrX/data/log4j2.xml #fully qualified name to your log4j.xml
I have a setup where I am using the following:
Spring Boot 1.5.13 with Spring Cloud Version Edgware.S3
I have Spring Cloud Config Server and my Spring Boot apps are its clients
Each app carries a bootstrap.yml with the config server uri and some other properties.
Running containers on a Docker Swarm
I am currently passing Swarm secrets to the clients via a custom script which reads the files put into /run/secrets/ and creating a /config/bootstrap.properties file. It ends up looking like this:
spring.cloud.config.username=user
spring.cloud.config.password=password
My Docker image's default command is then this:
java -Djava.security.egd=file:/dev/./urandom -jar /${appName}.jar --spring.cloud.bootstrap.location=file:/config/bootstrap.properties"
Great. This is working without a problem. The app, seemingly, reads:
The external bootstrap.properties to read in the config server's credentials
The classpath bootstrap.yml to read in the rest of the config client props
Fetches and reads in the config server's application-appName.yml
Then reads the bundled application.yml from the classpath
Now. I'm moving the apps to Spring Boot 2.0.3 with Finchley.RELEASE and well, this breaks.
What is happening now is:
The external bootstrap.properties is read in to get the config server's credentials
The classpath bootstrap.yml is SKIPPED entirely (UNEXPECTED!)
Fetches and reads in the config server's application-appName.yml
Then reads the bundled application.yml from the classpath
The problem is that the properties that were set in the internal bootstrap.yml are now missing for the app so it blows up on start. I've been able to reproduce it outside the container environment by doing the same thing; point the app to an external bootstrap.properties. If I copy over the bootstrap.yml properties into the bootstrap.properties, then it works just fine. Also, if I don't provide an external properties file, then the internal bootstrap.yml kicks in without a problem. So it's either one or the other!
I'v also tried modifying the bootstrap location to include the default locations but no luck:
-- spring.cloud.bootstrap.location=file:/config/bootstrap.properties,classpath:,classpath:/config,file:,file:config/
Any ideas where to look next? Maybe there is a new spring.cloud.config property I'm missing? Or can anyone confirm which behavior is the correct behavior? Assuming they fixed a potential loophole in Finchley then I can just put this to rest and look for another solution. If it's 'broken' in Finchley, I guess an issue report is in order?
Well, some more digging showed that it looks like this is the new behavior:
https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/wiki/Spring-Boot-2.0-Migration-Guide
The behavior of the spring.config.location configuration has been fixed; it previously added a location to the list of default ones, now it replaces the default locations. If you were relying on the way it was handled previously, you should now use spring.config.additional-location instead.
It didn't look to be Spring Cloud specific but I had nothing to lose.
Changing my java command to use this new property did the trick:
--spring.config.additional-location=file:/config/bootstrap.properties
Thanks.
I am working on a spring boot application in which i have to set Environment specific properties from user home folder.
i dig Google for the same & found we can put different properties file (dev, test, production) under resources and then we have to tell spring boot which environment we want to use using spring.profiles.active=dev OR prod.
however, my requirement is quite different. i will put a file in user home in my system & want to read properties form that file. how can i do that, need guidance.
Helping hands will be highly appreciated.
From the Spring Boot docs:
You can also refer to an explicit location using the spring.config.location environment property (comma-separated list of directory locations, or file paths).
As the docs go on to state, this must be specified on the command line or as an environment variable.
$ java -jar myproject.jar --spring.config.location=classpath:/default.properties,classpath:/override.properties
We explain that use case in a Devoxx presentation using EnvironmentPostProcessor, please refer to this section of the presentation for more details. You can also find the code sample online.
Well, it seems in your case you dont need environment variable. For production server your property file will be staying in and in staging machine it is also staying at same place. So where ever you deploy it will pick from . IMO you don't need to set environment, you just have to point property file to
Now to define this path you have 2 ways..
- You can put static path in your code
- You can set environment variable like Property_Path and read it in spring boot application..
However If you want to go one step ahead, you can use spring cloud configuration manager, by passing application+profile name to it, CM can fetch property file from directly from git or file system for you ...
