We are trying to access Test plans using the Web interface from Test Manager 2013 and we keep getting this message.
The test plan with id 328 does not exist or it’s area path is not owned by the default project team.
I read in another post that a fix would be to open the ROOT Test plan in Visual Studio and save it.
I don't know how to do that, can someone please let me know how or point me to somewhere I can learn on how to do that.

I haven't had this problem myself but what another post you mentioned means is following:
Go to Visual Studio
Search for a Work Item with ID from the error message you are getting (in your case 328)
Open this Work Item (it should be a Test Plan) in Visual Studio and save it
According to the post Cannot view any Test Suites and Test Cases in TFS 2013 Web Access despite being able to access them in MTM this should solve your problem.
Update:
What do you see if you just open TFS Web access in browser?
Can you see this "Test" part?
Can you see your Test Plans in the list of test plans of selected *Team Project"?
If you can't see your Test Plans in the list change the Team Project (just click on this and select another one)

You still access test plans and suites using either the Team Web Access or Microsoft Test Manager. But make sure that you set up access based on permissions for the area path.
We didn't have this kind of issues after upgrade to TFS 2013 Update 3 so I can't help you much...
If you don't find nothing helpful in article above consider to contact Microsoft since it seems to be an Upgrade issue.

I think this is a bug in the web access portion of TFS.
If the test plan's area includes a child node, you will get the error. For example: myArea/myChildArea. If you remove the child area, it works in web access. (Test Manager works in all cases.) My guess is that the web access logic is comparing the entire area path name as opposed to just looking at the top node of the area path.
(Problem occurs in TFS 2015)

I had similar problem and i solved it using following option.
Go to Areas on web tool and enable checkbox for sub-areas which selected under test plan, it is recommended not doing it on root areas.

How to migrate work items from TFS to Visual Studio Team Services

My team currently works with an on-premises TFS 2012 server. I am migrating everything to Visual Studio Team Services, formerly Visual Studio Online. I am starting with a test project and was able to easily get all the code migrated, but can't figure out how to do the same for the work items.
Are there any good guides out there?
New options as of March 29th 2018:
TFS to VSTS migration - The official import option which will import 1 project collection into 1 VSTS account. It automatically imports everything stored in the backup. At the point of writing this, the TFS must be upgraded to TFS 2018 and some work item template customizations must be removed (there are a few well documented features unavailable on VSTS).
VSTS Sync Migrator - Marting Hinshelwood, the uncrowned king of TFS and VSTS migrations, has built his own little tool that can migrate work items from one server/account to another. It can even do migrations from one Team Project to another and while doing it switch between process templates.
VSTS Work Item Migrator - Microsoft has also open sourced a project that they used internally to migrate work items. It's less powerful, but it was made by Microsoft.

At the moment there isn't a really good story. Your options are:
Start over - easiest :).
Start over and manually recreate items of value - It's a pain, but it's some teams have done these things in the past. keep the old TFS server available in read-only mode and each time you use a work item in the old system, you manually create it in the new one, set all the fields and upload the attachments. Depending on the number of items it'll take you a few sprints to migrate the most important stuff over.
Wait a while longer - Microsoft is currently working on a full fidelity import option which will allow you to upload a Project Collection and it will be exposed as a new VSTS Account (it's not going to be possible to import a project collection into an existing account).
Use Excel for import/export - Will work for most work items, you loose attachments and work item links other than parent/child. The trick is to extract from one Project Collection then copy all fields, except the ID to an Excel sheet bound to the target project collection. You will need to fix all Identity fields (works best when users have the exact same display name on premise as in VSTS) and you'll have to import once with state new and then past the current state/reason over the just imported values and sync again. Test Cases, Plans, Suites and Shared Steps will not be imported with their relations in tact. The approach would be very similar to this one.
Use the TFS Integration Tools - Will work for most work item types, though it will loose custom kanban states and tags. Test cases, Shared steps and their relations will not be imported. This option will allow you to import import work items and source code with their relationships in tact.
Use a 3rd party solution - Out of the available options currently OpsHub offers the most complete solution. For test case and source control link migration you're looking at the commercial edition, which comes at a steep price. It still has a long list of known issues and last time I tried it, I ran into numerous issues which required their support to resolve them.
There are specialized TFS consultants who live off these kinds of migrations if your current state of the work items is precious to you, then you could reach out to them.

MVC3 Ap in Visual Studio 2010- Changed to use Local IIS Web Server and can not get it back to VS dev server

I changed from running Use Visual Studio Development Server to Local IIS Web Server becasue I read it would create the virtual directories properly - it did not - once I navigate out of the account area I get
HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found

I have been googling and trying to get it to work, but can not and can no longer debug - Now I am trying to change it back and it keeps starting in Local IIS Web. I have HOSED myself and don't know where to go from here.

In terms of getting back to using the VS web server you should just need to:
Right click on the web project in VS
Selection properties
Go to the web tab
Select "use visual studio web server" radio button
For the sake of not leaving questions unanswered, I tried all of the suggestions above, and many more, and got nowhere. I was in an early phase at the time, and I had to move on, so I ended up creating a new solution, and porting things over. Not the best idea, but I had to go forward, and I had taken enough time. It is still living on my machine, and I plan to go back and figure it out at some point. Hopefully, I'll have more understanding and will be able to post what I did wrong so someone else can save some time. Thanks all for attempting.

Successful deployment from Visual Studio, but Sharepoint site shows old content

My company are working at Sharepoint site that we are developing using Visual Studio. The actual installation at the customer is performed by scripts deploying the produced wsp-files. During normal development I mostly use deployment from directly from inside Visual Studio. Unfortunately I often run into problems when trying to deploy my solutions. We are using a server-farm set up, but each developer has their own virtual server, datebase instance and so on.
We have one project file that the define the basic content-type used for different department. This content-type typically define stuff like what period that the list item cover. Each department have their own project that uses the content type combined with department specific fields to form the final list.
One of my current problems is that when I make edits to the content type and deploy it the changes does not seem to propagate. Even though I rebuild the solution and deploy both the base project and the department project with success I still see the old version of the content fields when I create a new department list. Sometimes it helps to retract the projects, but often I literally have to restart everything before it works.
My question is if this problem is caused by Visual Studio not really deploying my new defintions or if there is some architectual aspect of Sharepoint 2010 that might prevent the change to propagate. What steps can I take to lessen the likelihood of the problem occuring?
Have you tried deleting the content type with Central Administration before doing a new deployment? I've found out that Sharepoint don't update/create content types when it finds other one with the same name.

Unable to publish website from Visual studio 2010

We have a an ASP NET MVC website solution which only one out of three devs on the team is able to publish to the live server. When I, and another colleague, attempt to publish the site from VS 2010, the output window will display an error:
Unable to create the Web site
'\blah'. The path '\blah' does not
exist or you do not have access. The
specified path is invalid.
This points to a logon issue which my account, but the developer who can publish the site is a member of all the same user groups as me. As a long-shot, we gave Everyone full access to the folder, but this did not resolve the problem.
Can anyone suggest a more detailed way to try and figure out why we cannot publish the site? There must be a permission set somewhere that is allowing my colleague to publish the site from Visual Studio.
I had this problem and racked my brain trying to resolve it so I wouldn't have to copy the publish files to a remote server manually. I spent a great deal of time actively trying to get this to work.
Here's how I solved the problem: I went to File>Open in Visual Studio 2010 Express and navigated to the remote server (\\255.255.255.255\folder1\folder2\folder3 and so on). Right away I was challenged for a User Name an Password. I entered the credentials for the REMOTE server, checked the box to 'Remember my credentials'. I immediately tried to publish and voilá - it worked like a charm.
I hope this saves a lot of people a lot of time.
I had this issue - certain members of our team were able to publish directly from VS2010, whereas for some reason I was always getting permission denied errors, even though we were all able to connect to the server we were trying to deploy to. I fixed it in the following way:
Go to "Server Explorer".
Right click "Servers" and go to "Add server..."
Type in the name of the server you are trying to connect to, and then click on "Connect using a different user name..." - put the credentials for logging into the server in here.
Click OK and wait for it to add the server.
Now try and publish to that server and it should be ok...
Not sure why I needed to do this and others were able to deploy without adding the server in this way... remains unexplained.

Faced the same problem today. In my situation I had to close VS2010 and open it NOT as an admin and it worked without any problems.
This got me for a long time...Go to Project - Properties and select the Package/Publish Web tab. Under the header "Web Deployment Package Settings", there's a ellipsis button that you can use to map to the location you want to publish. You will be asked for your credentials during that process.
Are you using web deploy (right click and choose Publish)?
Have you tried copying the ProjectName.Publish.xml file from the one machine where you can publish to the other two machines? The login credentials for publishing are saved in this file.
In IIS can you check to see that all users/groups are listed under Management Service Delegation in IIS Manager? It is listed under the Server node in IIS. Alternatively you can give all administrators access by clicking on Edit Features from the side-menu and checking Allow Administrators to bypass rules.
You could also check under IIS Manager Permissions for the individual site to see if the person that can publish is listed under there and you are not.

I have also found that mapping a drive to the UNC location can be a work around.

TFS annotate/blame summary report for a project

In Team Foundation Server, I know that you can use the Annotate feature to see who last edited each line in a particular file (equivalent to "Blame" in CVS). What I'd like to do is akin to running Annotate on every file in a project, and get a summary report of all the developers who have edited a file in the project, and how many lines of code they currently "own" in that project.
Aside from systematically running Annotate of each file, I can't see a way to do this. Any ideas that would make this process faster?
PS - I'm doing to this to see how much of a consultant's code still remains in a particular (rather large) project, not to keep tabs on my developers, in case you're worried about my motivation :)
It's easy enough to use the "tf.exe history" command recursively across a directory of files in TFS. This will tell you who changed what files.
However what you're after is a little bit more than this - you want to know if the latest versions of any files have lines written by a particular user.
The Team Foundation Power Tools ship with a command-line version of annotate called "tfpt.exe annotate". This has a /noprompt option to direct the output to the console, but it only outputs the changeset id - not the user name.
You could also use the TFS VersionControl object model to write a tool that does exactly what you need.
If you install the TFS Power tools (at least for VS2005); it's called annotate.
It might be part of VS2008...
You can use TFS Analysis Cube to see generate a code churn report, which I believe is something you would like.
Annotate is now part of Visual Studio (I think it was introduced in VS 2010).

I'm writing an answer to an 8 year old question :). Its not really a full answer, but a suggestion to look into excel reports for TFS.
TFS2013 / 2015 on prem has something has an excel report that can be used to visualize Code Churn.
In VS open team explorer then select "Documents" then explode "Excel Reports". I believe Code Churn report has something like discussed. The report is made by some default project template so I think tfs2013 on prem just creates it.

It requires analysis to be executed from Windows machines with the Team Foundation Server Object Model installed (download for TFS 2013).
