Controller outputs nothing on http calls, works well with https calls - codeigniter

I have a commercial website, built on CodeIgniter framework. The cart controller is used to generate the data of the cart contents,
and load it in one of two views: either a full cart page, or a sidebar within other pages (in that case, the sidecart view is being called into a designated div via ajax).
All of this has been up and functioning well for over a year now.
Three days ago, all of a sudden, the cart page stopped working. By "stopped working" I mean no output is being served to the browser.
I am not aware of any changes being made to the code on my website, so I don't even know how to start debugging...
What I did discover is that when I use https to call the cart, it gets served OK. So the problem exists only with http calls (even though up until now I used http calls and all was well).
To make things complicated, if I force https on all calls to the cart controller - the cart page works well, but the sidecart isn't showing at all. If I use http on all calls to the cart function, it's the other way around: the sidecart works well, but the full page doesn't show.
I should say I'm using a hook to force/unforce ssl, depending on the uri segment,so I would very much like all calls to mydomain.com/cart to use the same protocol.
Don't know if it's relevant or not, but my SSL certificate was renewed a few days before the problem appeared. The hosting company insists nothing has changed, but I don't know if I can trust them completely.
Also, at the same time the problem started, the following message started appearing in my error_log:

Any pointers as to how to start debugging this weird issue would be highly appreciated!

Almost too embarrassed to admit, but found the answer.
It had nothing to do with https vs http.
I had a page counter which was sending all the data of the page counts to all pages, and I was doing the counting within the php script, instead of using MySQL COUNT, and sending only the result to the page...
So the http cart stopped working because it was the most popular page, and the counter data was huge. The https cart wasn't used as often, so the counter data wasn't as big, and still manageable.
Thanks #sintakonte and #Shaiful Islam for pointing me in the right direction! It was just what I needed to help me reach a solution.

Endless spinning wheel at Woocommerce checkout

I am in the process of building a shop on wordpress using woocommerce. All is well except that at checkout there is an endless spinning wheel blocking the payment processing.
I have checked the error logs - which show no errors
I have disabled all plug ins - which makes no difference
I have reverted to the default woocommerce shopfront theme - which has the same result.
The console shows no errors.
I have also followed the instructions here https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/endless-loadingspinner-on-the-checkout-page/ which assumes its a memory limit issue. This did not work.

Referring to these two pages I have been able to see that the json response from /?wc-ajax=checkout is just returning HTML which I would imagine is where the issue is.
However I am running an Apache server rather than Nginx as has been mentioned in some threads and articles. Assuming there is a server misconfiguration of the server or something that needs changing what might that be? Bearing in mind that I do not have direct access to this, so will need to be asking someone else to sort it out for me.
And finally if there is something else I can try what might that be?

The issue turned out that I had a legacy static html holding page in place as the site's homepage rather than having one set up with wordpress. Simply removing the .html page and letting wordpress's homepage take over solves the problem.
The moral of the story create your holding page in wordpress.
Go to Google Developer Tools, then Go to the Network tab. Click the button and make the request and let that bad boy spin out.
You mentioned the response is returning HTML. Click on the request that goes out that appears to be taking forever (/?wc-ajax=checkout) and then click on the Preview tab to display that HTML. I bet it shows an error or a clue, anyway.
In my case the checkout was working fine on Desktop but not on Mobile. After many search on internet I read the solution of #UntitledGraphic.
I had set a redirect in ht-access. The redirect was showing a different home page for mobile. When I removed it, the error gone. I checked back & forth and was sure the ht-access redirect was the problem.
If you have set any redirect in the Htaccess then remove it. This will solve your issue in this case.
I also checked the redirect code on function.php instead of htaccess again the problem appeared. So finally removed the redirection.
In my own case the redirection was the issue. So I had to delete the redirect I created via Cpanel.

Blank page on Azure

I have an application running in Azure (trial account). So far so good, everything has been nice, except for a long deploy times (10-15 minutes).
I've done a deploy recently and got a lot of weird bugs I cannot trace. For example, if I log in and thus a cookie is created (I use FormsAuthentication) all I get from the application is a blank page, as in, absolutely nothing is sent to the browser. The application works fine in the ASP.NET Web Dev Server, IIS Express, even the Azure Emulator!
What could be the issue? Searching the web hasn't been much help, with only a couple of unrelated issues.
I tried logging into the site (if I correctly understood from one if the comments, the url is versulo.com) and I didn't get any blank page with 404 status code.
However, there is another problem I spotted. Your site seems to be implementing caching inappropriately. The main page, the one from which you trigger the login and which is dynamic in nature contains an Expires header set at 5 minutes after the pages first load. That means that each call or redirect to that page within 5 minutes since it was first loaded, will be served from the browser's cache.
Because of that, after I login into your application I am redirected back to the home page which looks like I am not logged in. If I force a F5 refresh on the browser, then the page will indeed show me as logged in.
If instead of a refresh I try to login again (which is what I did in my first trials, since it looked like the login didn't work in the first time), I am getting an error page with the following message:
Sorry, there has been an error on the server.
500
The page looks like an application error page and even if it displays the 500 number, it is actually served with an HTTP 200.
So, while I am not 100% sure if this is also the cause of the problem described by you, you should remove the Expires headers from the dynamic pages your application is serving.
This can be because you're combining Forms Authentication with multiple instances. Are you using multiple instances? If that's the case, could you:
Try to change it to 1 instance. Does this fix the issue?
Try to make the following change to the web.config (configure machineKey): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff649308.aspx
some partial views are not rendered at all;
Do you mean some pages are working fine, but others are not? It would be better if you can point out a pattern on what’s working and what’s not? For now, please make sure all referenced assemblies (except for default .NET assemblies and Windows Azure runtime) have Copy Local set to true. For example, MVC assemblies are considered as extensions to .NET, so please set Copy Local to true. In addition, you can also try to use Fiddler to monitor the requests to see what’s returned from the server.

Could you provide a link to the application, or perhaps some source code?
When you say 'blank page', what is actually returned, a 404 / 500?
Have you inspected the IIS logs, or added some trace information to your code?
Have you tried accessing the service using it's ip address rather than domain name?

Making sure Magento uses secure URLs when its supposed to

Is there a way to make sure Magento calls secure urls when its in the checkout process? The problem is the web browser complains when over httpS because not all resources are secure. In the source I have things like <script type="text/javascript" src="httP://something"> which triggers this error. I'm afraid customer won't think the site is secure.
I know I can use this <?php $this->getUrl('something/', array('_secure'=>true)) ?> However I don't want all my javascript resources to be secure all the time, just in the checkout process.
It seems Magento should handle this automatically when you configure it use frontend SSL, but apparently not.
So my question is what is the best way to handle this?

The customer would be correct - the page content is not secure.
If you hardcode protocols in markup or incorrectly specify protocols in code, the system delivers what you ask. It's incumbent on the implementer to make sure the markup is correct.
That said, asset sources can use relative protocols in markup:
<script src="//cdn.com/some.js"></script>
Also, secured/non-secured status can be passed dynamically to arguments.
Magento serves out everything secure that it controls. The problems usually come from scripts that load content from other sites. Magento doesn't have any control over these. It would have to literally rewrite the script in order to do that.
It's your responsibility to see that the scripts are properly written or else banished to pages where they belong so the browser doesn't complain about insecure content.
A case where relative protocols did not work. --->> We took on Authorize.NET and chewed them out because of their security badge causing Internet Explorer to pop up the insecure content warning during cart operations, the very place you want the badge to show so the customer knows their credit card info is being properly handled. They had the problem fixed within two weeks after we told them people were not ordering and actually complaining about site security when we showed their badge in the cart.
It was caused because the script they gave you at the time, which we tried to modify for relative protocol, then turned around and called yet another script that retrieved plain ole port 80 insecure content.
Facebook can go like itself on another page, it doesn't belong in cart operations (another script menace we had to deal with).

Kohana execution time is fast, but overall response time is slow, why?

I use the Kohana3's Profiler class and its profiler/stats template to time my website. In a very clean page (no AJAX, no jQuery etc, only load a template and show some text message, no database access), it shows the request time is 0.070682 s("Requests" item in the "profiler/stats" template). Then I use two microtime() to time the duration from the first line of the index.php to the last line of index.php, it shows almost very fast result. (0.12622809410095 s). Very nice result.
But if i time the request time from the browser's point of view, it's totally different. I use Firefox + Temper data add-on, it shows the duration of the request is 3.345sec! And I noticed that from the time I click the link to enter the website (firefox starts the animated loading icon), to when the browser finish its work(the icon animation stops), it really takes 3-4 seconds!!
In my another website which is built with WikkaWiki, the time measured by Temper Data is only 2190ms - 2432ms, including several access to mysql database.
I tried a clean installation of kohana, and the default plain hello-world page also loads 3025ms.
All the website i mentioned here are tested in the same "localhost" PC, same setting. Actually they are just hosted in different directories in the same machine. Only Database module is enabled in the bootstrap.php for kohana website.
I'm wondering why the kohana website's overall response is such slow while the php code execution time is just 0.126 second?? Are there anything I should look into?

Test result on standard phpinfo() page is 1100-1200ms (Temper data)
Profiler shows you execution time from Kohana initialization to Profiler render call. So, its not a full Kohana time. Some kind of actions (Kohana::shutdown_handler(), Session::_destroy() etc) may take a long time.
Since your post confirms Kohana is finishing in a 1/10th of a second and less, it's probably something else:
Have you tested something else other than Kohana? It sounds like the server is at fault, but you can't be sure unless you compare the response times with something else. Try a HTML and pure PHP page.
The firefox profiler could be taking external media into consideration. So if you have a slow connection and you load Google Analytics, then that could be another problem.

Although the issue happens in Windows 7, maybe it can help...

Sporadic page load failure

An issue has started recently, within Chrome and reportedly Firefox, pages would be loading fine and browsing would be as normal and then suddenly then a page would fail to load (continuing to spin as if loading). The page that fails is often not the same.
If I refresh the page or try to goto another page on the domain within the same browser, the browser doesn't even try to resolve the name or make a connection, and is then unable to load the page.
Swapping to another browser and I am back to browsing the domain normally again, while the original browser(in most cases Chrome) will not load the pages until a restart.
This has happened with 3 different people on 3 different machines in both Chrome and Firefox.
The domain that it is running off has allot of ajax calls within certain pages, I am not sure if the server is tripping out due to the number of requests from the one client...I am not sure.
I am not sure if this is a server, client or script functionality issue, as I can not personally reproduce it. I can do little to debug or work out what is causing this or how to fix it...
As you can see I am not sure of allot with this problem :) so I am throwing it out to stack-overflow in the hope that someone may have had similar experiences or have any directions I could look towards.

If the page is making many requests in a short time, your firewall (router) may block it. I've noticed this behavior on my own router, and had to set it to a less restrictive level to make things work.
