Oracle / SQL Developer displaying (null) in column - oracle

I have any oracle table that sometimes has valid null values is some cells. In SQL Developer it displays in the null cell as (null). This is not a problem but in a grid I have on a jsp page is also displays as (null) and I need it just to be blank. NVL does not work unless I use a space. I was wondering if there is an oracle setting or something to have valid null cells just be blank ? thank you

Modifying SQL Developer Preferences
Jeff Smith, the product manager for SQL Developer, blogged about this here, http://www.thatjeffsmith.com.
Just navigate to the SQL Developer tool bar as follows:
Preferences>Database>Advanced
and change the value in the field, "Display Null Value As", to nothing as seen here:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With a jsp, one could create a method for scenarios where a column is null (to display the null as other than '(null)').
Selecting oracle column header
I've been browsing and to no avail, I can't find any information on how to select/show only the column header. My objective is to select only column header . I've uploaded a picture for better illustration on my objective. In the picture shown, I'm trying to only select and display the one ive highlighted in the red box.
Oracle table:
The only information I found from the net is selecting an individual column, and with that. It will display the data as well which is not my objective. my main objective is to only select column headings.
In Oracle APEX SQL Workshop you can describe a table with this command:
desc table_name
If you're using a query, you can click on the "Describe" tab below the query and above the result grid.
I had a similar requirement, so in page designer I plugged in a "Where Clause = Sysdate-1"
you can use select and null to pick columns and use alias to name them
select null AS column_name,null AS column_name
from TABLE_NAME
Making a search bar manually WITHOUT interactive report. (Oracle APEX)
I am trying to make an application completely manually without using any interactive reports or generated PL/SQL. Everything is working at the moment but I am stumped when it comes to the search bar and I can't find anything online to help me.
I have a classic report called 'Browse Job Vacancies' and a 'Search' button; I also have the 'C1_JOB_TITLE_ITEM' search bar and a page process called 'Search'.
In the process I have this code:
SELECT
JOB_CODE,
JOB_TITLE,
JOB_DESCRIPTION,
SITE_NAME,
EMAIL_ADDRESS,
TELEPHONE_NUMBER,
SALARY,
START_OF_PLACEMENT,
APPLICATION_METHOD,
APPLICATION_CLOSING_DATE
FROM JOB
WHERE upper(job_title) = upper(:C1_JOB_TITLE_ITEM);
I am getting this error:
ORA-06550: line 1, column 64: PLS-00428: an INTO clause is expected in this SELECT statement
So I created this code:
DECLARE temp_row char;
BEGIN
SELECT
JOB_CODE,
JOB_TITLE,
JOB_DESCRIPTION,
SITE_NAME,
EMAIL_ADDRESS,
TELEPHONE_NUMBER,
SALARY,
START_OF_PLACEMENT,
APPLICATION_METHOD,
APPLICATION_CLOSING_DATE
INTO temp_row
FROM JOB
WHERE job_title = :C1_JOB_TITLE_ITEM;
END;
Here I am getting this error:
ORA-06550: line 13, column 16: PL/SQL: ORA-00947: not enough values
I am completely stumped on what to do at this point so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Sorry if I'm not being detailed enough this is my first time writing in Stack Overflow.
(Editing because someone didn't think this was an answer.)
You say you have a page process. You don't need any sort of process for this. You should have a Region with the following properties (assuming 18.x):
Type = Classic Report
Source > Location = Local Database
Source > Type = SQL Query
Source > SQL Query > your query from your first block above
Apex will run the query and create a report based on it. Processes are for PL/SQL blocks that do something like populating data or manipulating the database in some way.
When you enter a keyword in your item and click your button (the button action should be Submit Page), Apex will populate C1_JOB_TITLE_ITEM in session state with the user's value, then use that in the bind variable when it re-generates the page.
1) Create a classic report with that SQL as the source code.
2) Set C1_JOB_TITLE_ITEM in Page Items To Submit attribute, just under region source.
3) Create the page item C1_JOB_TITLE_ITEM, as your search field.
4) Create a Dynamic Action on Change of that item, and refresh your classic report region. The timing of this refresh is up to you. Step 2 ensures the value you've typed in the browser is sent to the database for the purpose of re-running that query.
Do you have a function based index on upper(job_title)? Otherwise you may experience performance issues.
Crystal Reports displays blank (null) values for some fields from an Oracle view
Summary
We have a Crystal Report referencing a single Oracle view. There are no other tables or joins in the report. The view is composed of several selects, joins, and other data transformations (e.g., sum, case, to_date, group by).
Four columns from the view display as blank (null) in the report. These same columns display correctly in Oracle SQL Developer and via a select using the Oracle Data Provider for .NET in a C# application. All other columns display correctly in the report.
In addition the Browse Field option displays no values for the affected fields, but does display options for unaffected fields of the same type. Similarly, if I make an affected field a parameter of the report no options are presented.
We verified that in all cases we are connecting as the same read only user in Crystal Reports, Oracle SQL Developer, and in our Web Application.
Failed Resolution Attempts
We removed and replaced the view and fields in the Crystal Report.
We created a brand new report connecting to the same view.
We created a new view (from the same SQL) to be used in the same report
We verified database via Crystal Reports
We converted implicit date conversion from
score_month = '01-SEP-2017'
to
score_month = TO_DATE('01-SEP-2017', 'dd-MON-yyyy')`
per https://stackoverflow.com/a/37729175/19977
Other Oddities
Exporting the data from the view to a table works, but we want to use a view
We're at a loss as to what the cause of this issue is. Any ideas?
Several edits to the view were required to resolve this issue.
We removed Oracle specific sql per https://stackoverflow.com/a/37729175/19977. Example:
-- replace
TRUNC(sysdate, 'MONTH') AS score_month`
-- with
TO_DATE('01-SEP-2017', 'dd-MON-yyyy')
-- and replace
where score_month = '01-SEP-2017'
-- with
where score_month = TO_DATE('01-SEP-2017', 'dd-MON-yyyy')
Fully qualify all tables and views used in the Oracle view with the schema and table name. Example:
-- replace
FROM table t
-- with
FROM our_schema.table t
It remains unclear why the view would work as intended from Oracle SQL Developer and in application via the Oracle Data Provider for .NET but not from Crystal Reports. Further insight into this issue is welcome.
Crystal Reports Issue turning a string into a number
I'm having one of those throw the computer out the window days.
I am working on a problem involving Crystal Reports (Version 10) and an Oracle Database (11g).
I am taking a view from the database that returns a string (varcahr2(50)) which is actually a number, when a basic SELECT * query is run on this view I get the number back in the format 000000000000100.00.
When this view is then used in Crystal Reports I can view the field data, but I can't sum the data as it is not a number.
I began, by attempting to using ToNumber on the field, to which Crystal's response was that the string was not numeric text. Ok fair enough, I went back to the view and ran TO_NUMBER, when this was then used in crystal it did not return any results. I also attempted to run TO_CHAR on the view so that I could hopefully import the field as text and then perform a ToNumber, yet the same as with the TO_NUMBER no records were displayed.
I've started new reports, I've started new views. No avail.
This seems to have something to do with how I am retrieving the data for the view.
In simplistic terms I'm pulling data from a table looking at two fields a Foreign Key and a Value field.
SELECT PRIMARY_KEY,
NVL(MAX(DECODE(FOREIGN_KEY, FOREIGN_KEY_OF_VALUE_I_NEED, VALUE_FIELD)), 0)
FROM MY_TABLE
GROUP BY PRIMARY_KEY
When I attempted to put modify the result using TO_NUMBER or TO_CHAR I have used it around the VALUE_FIELD itself and the entire expression, wither way works when the run in a SQL statement. However any TO_NUMBER or TO_CHAR modification to the statement returns no results in Crystal Reports when the view is used.
This whole problem smacks of something that is a tick box or equivalent that I have overlooked.
Any suggestions of how to solve this issue or where I could go to look for an answer would be greatly appreciated.
I ran this query in SQL Developer:
SELECT xxx, to_number(xxx) yyy
FROM (
SELECT '000000000000100.00' XXX FROM DUAL
)
Which resulted in:
XXX YYY
000000000000100.00 100
If your field is truly numeric, you could create a SQL Expression field to do the conversion:
-- {%NUMBER_FIELD}
TO_NUMBER(TABLE.VALUE_FIELD)
This turned out to be an issue with how Crystal Reports deals with queries from a database. All I needed to do was contain my SQL statement within another Select Statement and on this instance of the column apply the TO_NUMBER so that Crystal Reports would recognize the column values as numbers.
Hopefully this helps someone out, as this was a terrible waste of an afternoon.
Explicitly set column value to null SQL Developer
I am new to Oracle DB and I am using Oracle SQL Developer (Ver 3.0.02) to query the DB.
I wanted to explicitly set one column to null?
How do I do that in the SQL Developer GUI?
Previously in MSSQL, clicking CTRL+0 will explicitly set the value to null.
How about Oracle SQL Developer?
Thanks
You'll have to write the SQL DML yourself explicitly.
i.e.
UPDATE <table>
SET <column> = NULL;
Once it has completed you'll need to commit your updates
commit;
If you only want to set certain records to NULL use a WHERE clause in your UPDATE statement.
As your original question is pretty vague I hope this covers what you want.
If you want to use the GUI... click/double-click the table and select the Data tab. Click in the column value you want to set to (null). Select the value and delete it. Hit the commit button (green check-mark button). It should now be null.
More info here:
How to use the SQL Worksheet in SQL Developer to Insert, Update and Delete Data
Use Shift+Del.
More info:
Shift+Del combination key set a field to null when you filled a field by a value and you changed your decision and you want to make it null. It is useful and I amazed from the other answers that give strange solutions.
It is clear that most people who haven't used SQL Server Enterprise Manager don't understand the question (i.e. Justin Cave).
I came upon this post when I wanted to know the same thing.
Using SQL Server, when you are editing your data through the MS SQL Server GUI Tools, you can use a KEYBOARD SHORTCUT to insert a NULL rather than having just an EMPTY CELL, as they aren't the same thing. An empty cell can have a space in it, rather than being NULL, even if it is technically empty. The difference is when you intentionally WANT to put a NULL in a cell rather than a SPACE or to empty it and NOT using a SQL statement to do so.
So, the question really is, how do I put a NULL value in the cell INSTEAD of a space to empty the cell?
I think the answer is, that the way the Oracle Developer GUI works, is as Laniel indicated above, And THAT should be marked as the answer to this question.
Oracle Developer seems to default to NULL when you empty a cell the way the op is describing it.
Additionally, you can force Oracle Developer to change how your null cells look by changing the color of the background color to further demonstrate when a cell holds a null:
Tools->Preferences->Advanced->Display Null Using Background Color
or even the VALUE it shows when it's null:
Tools->Preferences->Advanced->Display Null Value As
Hope that helps in your transition.
