I'm pretty new to Coded UI Tests and after searching through documentation , I've failed to find a solution to this.
Is it possible to visually ( Like when I recorded the test ) edit the code/steps after it has been generated, or, introduce new steps ?
Is there a way to set the Test to open Internet Explorer with a specific URL as the Test begins ? ( Different from Windows Key + Clicking on the icon in the menu bar )
Your screenshot shows the UI Map Editor of Coded UI. From there you can make many changes to the recorded tests.
To record new steps and new assertions to go into an existing Coded UI test do the following. In the [TestMethod] in the ".cs" file put the cursor where the calls to the new code should be placed, I like to add a blank line at that place to make it precisely clear to me where the new item is added. Use the context (right click) menu and select "Generate code for Coded UI test" => "Use Coded UI test builder". Then use the record and generate tools just as when the test was first recorded.
I removed the steps from the UI Map Editor and added this line to the [TestMethod].cs file
[TestInitialize()]
public void BrowserStarter()
{
BrowserWindow browser = BrowserWindow.Launch(new Uri("http://www.google.com"));
}

I have a test which essentially will click a link on the footer of the page. We have three of them and they all lead to different places:
A Google Docs form
A training page
A licensing page
The code below makes the right assertions and clicks the link:
if #link_selection.eql?('leave feedback')
#wait.until {#driver.find_element(css: => 'cell.feedback').click}
#wait.until {#driver.find_element(css: => 'a[href="https://docs.google.com/a/showmyhomework.co.uk/forms/d/1LP8BZ950TSXXDR1HuVz7yhv9Cp3h6scmQtNFqIRW_XI/viewform"').click}
puts "Leave feedback link clicked"
I've modularised it for each different link location.
When the link is clicked, it naturally opens in a new browser tab. I then wanted to extend the test to then view the tab which was opened and then make an assertion on that page. I wanted to ask how I can handle a new tab in Selenium and the way in that:
a. It asserts that the new tab is open (and switches to it)
b. It can then assert a heading or title of the page (so that the test is sure that the page has been opened.
The following code in c#, please feel free to change it to ruby.
// This gets the window handles of open available windows(also, tabs)
var availableWindows= driver.WindowHandles;
To switch to the new tab with respect to the title of the page:
string Title= "whateveryourpagetitleis";
foreach (string windowId in availableWindows)
{
string windowTitle = driver.SwitchTo().Window(windowId).Title;
if (windowTitle.ContainsIgnoreCase(title))
{
driver.SwitchTo().Window(windowId);
}
}
You can play around with the functions and then use your asserts accordingly. But, what you're looking for is WindowHandles
I'm to write UI test case for the homepage for a web application. the home page is very long. How to write Manual UI test cases for the home page? It's for http://www.jarviz.com
Can anyone help me with this? Thank you.
1) Try to divide web page to separate section/parts like a) Main Menu, b) Login/Sign Up, c) Make Your Move section d) Your applications, our platform etc.
2) Then for each part try to exclude single element. For example Main Menu button, or Login button, or Top Banner Control buttons.
3) Then write test cases for each element and action that you can do with the element.
Simple example:
Title: Pressing of the Main Menu button; Precondition: Web page should be opened; Steps to reproduce: Click on Main Menu button; Expected Result: Side Main Menu should be presented on the screen; Actual result: the same - Side Main Menu should be presented on the screen.
Try to use Google Sheets for your test cases.
I am getting crazy with a problem that I found when executing a Visual Studio Coded UI Test.
The scenario is as follows.
I recorded a Coded UI Tests that do the following steps in a Web Application (Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011):
Login into an application
Navigate into a page
On the page set the selected value of a html combobox
The test is able to do all those steps without a problem, even selecting the value in the combobox.
The web application have a piece of Javascript that is executed when the selected item changes.
if one of the values is selected then an alert message is presented to the user and the application will set the selected item to a default one!
The javascript code look like this:
switch (Xrm.Page.getAttribute("status").getValue()) {
case 3: //Authorised
alert("Please use the method XPTO to update the record status to Authorised!");
Xrm.Page.getAttribute("status").setValue(1);
Xrm.Page.getControl("tatus").setFocus(true);
return false;
The UI Test method that is performing the change in the combobox is as follows:
/// <summary>
/// Select a value in the Status dropdown box
/// </summary>
public void SelectStatus()
{
#region Variable Declarations
HtmlComboBox uIStatusComboBox = this.UIHttpsappWindow200.UIModuleUITEDocument5.UIWorkplaceDashboardsFrame.UIModuleUITEDocument.UIStatusComboBox;
// Select 'Authorised' in 'Status' combo box
uIStatusComboBox.SelectedItem = this.SelectStatus_SPParams.UIStatusComboBoxSelectedItem;
}
The test method is able to change the value in the combobox, and an alert message is displayed to the user. However this part of the code uIStatusComboBox.SelectedItem = this.SelectStatus_SPParams.UIStatusComboBoxSelectedItem;
never returns and the test just hangs there until it timeouts!
I have no ideia how to work arround this issue! I was thinking that maybe the problem could be in the fact that we have javascript code that is executed after the alert is displayed to the user. I changed the JS so that the alert message is the last thing to be displayed but it also didn´t help!
I also noticed that if I click Ok on the alert message the test Pass!
If I select other value that dont trigger any JS the test also Pass!
Does anyone have any idea about this issue?
Edit 1:
I noticed another thing, I can use the BrowserWindow object to send a JS script to the browser. If I try to create an alert message the call also gets blocked until I click on the Ok button, on the alert!
BrowserWindow bw = BrowserWindow.Locate("My window");
bw.ExecuteScript("alert('This is just a simple alert.');");
The ExecuteScript statement also gets blocked until I click on the OK button!
This seems very very strange!
I believe I have found a workaround.
I was googling to find anything that could help me with this issue and I end up finding this question on StackOverflow Coded ui test - Select an item from a combobox without using mouse coordinates
I try to select the same item in the Dropdown without using the "SelectedItem" property of the HtmlComboBox element.
I try to use the keyboard to select the element in the dropdown box, first I click on the Dropdown and then I use the Down key and Enter key to select the element that I want:
public void SelectStatus_SP(string SelectedItem)
{
#region Variable Declarations
HtmlComboBox uIStatusComboBox = this.UIHttpsappWindow200.UIpopupUITEDocument5.UIWorkplaceDashboardsFrame.UIpopupUITEDocument.UIStatusComboBox;
#endregion
Mouse.Click(uIStatusComboBox);
Keyboard.SendKeys(uIStatusComboBox, "{Down}{Down}{Enter}", ModifierKeys.None);
}
In my case the element that I want to select is the 3rd one, so I go down 2 times and then hit enter on the element I want to select.
This workaround is not so good because if the element changes position I will select the worng one! But this was the only way I got for the test not to be stock in that part!
I wonder if anyone had a similar issue. Because to me this seems like a bug in the Coded UI Test engine, It doesn´t make any scence for the test to be stocked while the alert is not closed!
I am writing automated tests for a website. On the website there is a button that will have the inner text "All Open" + four random digits. For example: "All Open2957". Is there a way to find the button using only the "All Open" part of the string?
This does not work since the string is missing the four last digits:
HtmlSpan uIAllOpenPane = new HtmlSpan();
uIAllOpenPane.SearchProperties[HtmlDiv.PropertyNames.InnerText] = "All Open";
The simple answer is to use the PropertyExpressionOperator.Contains rather than PropertyExpressionOperator.EqualTo comparator and search for just the required text.
For recorded tests, find the control in the UI Map editor and view its properties panel. Click the "Search properties" field and then click the ellipsis. The window that appears allows the comparator and the required text to be altered.
For hand coded tests use code of the form:
uIAllOpenPane.SearchProperties.Add(HtmlDiv.PropertyNames.InnerText,
"All Open",
PropertyExpressionOperator.Contains);
According to this Microsoft blog the array index style (ie with [ and ]) as used in the question internally calls the SearchProperties.Add(...) but that style has no variation to specify ...Contains, so call the ...Add(...) explicitly.
Check this out
Button allOpenButton = (Button)BrowserWindow.ExecuteScript("allOpenButton = function(){var found; $('input[type=\"button\"]').each(function(){ if($(this).val().indexOf('All Open') > -1){ found = $(this);};}); return found;}; return allOpenButton();");
When trying to locate the controller I only got the FailedToPerformActionOnHiddenControlException. Eventually I was able to locate the DIV container that contained the controller I was trying to locate instead of focusing on finding the controller directly. After finding the container I could locate the controller using
HtmlSpan uIAllOpenPane = new HtmlSpan(container);
uIAllOpenPane.SearchProperties.Add(HtmlDiv.PropertyNames.InnerText, "All Open",
PropertyExpressionOperator.Contains);
The code from #AdrianHHH helped with the problem when part of the string is randomized each time you encounter the controller.
I have been Working with Selenium WebDriver for a few months now and I have a problem with a drop down menu within a web app that I am working on.
What is happening is that the test is opening the page, verifying several elements on the page by finding them and then ensuring they are displayed.
After doing that there is some text entered into different fields, then the option select box is clicked on to open the drop down menu.
Following this the test iterates through all the options in the drop down menu until it finds the one it needs, then clicks on that option.
At this point the option is selected but the drop down menu is not closed.
I have tried clicking on the option select again but this has no effect, during the rest of the test other pages are navigated to and the menu does not close.
Then the page is saved and then navigated away from.
However the drop down menu remains until the browser is closed.
This is the code from the app:
<select id="options" name="options" class="options">
<option value="option1 (auto)">option1 (auto)</option>
<option value="option2">option2</option>
<option value="option3">option3</option>
</select>
the first solution I would try is to click on menu options in different ways. Selenium API provides us with this possibility.
1) locate e.g. css selectors of the elements.
String cssOption1 = "select[id='options']>option[value='option1 (auto)']";
String cssOption2 = "select[id='options']>option[value='option2']";
String cssOption3 = "select[id='options']>option[value='option3']";
Also don't forget to verify that you found elements properly e.g .in firepath, firebug addon in ffox:
approach 1
driver.findElement(By.cssSelector(cssOption2)).click();
approach 2 using actions builder API
WebElement mnuOptionElement;
mnuOptionElement = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector(cssOption2));
Actions builder = new Actions(driver);
// Move cursor to the Main Menu Element
builder.moveToElement(mnuOptionElement).click();
more info about Actions builder you can get here
approach 3 using jsExecutor to click on web element. Always works for me in all situations.
JavascriptExecutor js = (JavascriptExecutor) driver;
StringBuilder stringBuilder = new StringBuilder();
stringBuilder.append("var x = $(\'"+cssOption2+"\');");
stringBuilder.append("x.click();");
js.executeScript(stringBuilder.toString());
Hope this works for you
I have solved the problem with a work around, as this is the only way that I have found to work.
Firstly thank you eugene.polschikov for your answer although it didn't solve the problem it did open my eye somewhat, I had no knowledge of action builder, and it has given me some great ideas about future tests.
Also thank you to anyone who read this and pondered over a possible solution.
The workaround that is now in place is that the select is not opened.
The way the code works is that it would open the list and find the one it wanted and click on it, at this point the select wouldn't close, so now the code no longer opens the select in the first place, it clicks on the hidden option to select it, not 100% what i wanted, but it works.
Happy Programming,
Ben.
If a human can press Escape to exit the combobox, you can do that in Selenium by switching to the active element:
from selenium.webdriver.common.keys import Keys
element = driver.switch_to.active_element
element.send_keys(Keys.ESCAPE)
