Servlet 500 error ClassNotFound exception - maven

I'm building a web app using Vaadin and it needs to communicate with several REST APIs. I've set it up in IntelliJ with Maven. I was thinking for the REST client I would use GSON to parse the JSON objects I'd be receiving from the open APIs, however, the application crashes due to a servlet exception error.
Caused by:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.google.gwt.json.client.JSONObject
I've added the GSON dependency to the pom.xml:
<dependency>
<groupId>com.google.code.gson</groupId>
<artifactId>gson</artifactId>
<version>2.3.1</version>
</dependency>
And have tried changing the module settings from Provided to Compiled to Runtime but with no change.
I'm just stumped as to why the GSON jar appears in the project dependencies within IntelliJ using Maven but fails on run time. I've seen references to Eclipse and including the jar in the classpath but, again, I'm using IntelliJ/Maven to build my Vaadin project and satisfy dependencies.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Add below dependency in your classpath:
<dependency>
<groupId>com.google.gwt</groupId>
<artifactId>gwt-user</artifactId>
<version>2.3.0</version>
</dependency>

Spring boot jar Unable to start embedded Tomcat

i have created spring rest services using eclipse IDE. It works fine in eclipse when i run using Debug configurations however when I export it as a executable JAR and run using below command
java -jar cs.jar
it gives me below error:

why it's not working as a jar?
You need to check if you have included servlet-api jar in your classpath, if yes, delete it.
If servlet-api is in classpath, it is included in WEB-INF/lib and then the error is thrown because servlet container has already servlet api jar.
Delete servlet-api dependency from maven or gradle if exits or if this dependency is adding by any other module then exclude servlet api dependency like below
<dependency>
<groupId><groupId></groupId>
<artifactId><some dependency></artifactId>
<version><version></version>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<groupId>javax.servlet</groupId>
<artifactId>servlet-api</artifactId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>

Glassfish incremental deployment failes when including Selenium

I have a Java EE project which is meant to run on Glassfish 4.1. I want to use Selenium to collect information from some web pages, i.e. I need to include Selenium in the deployment (not just for tests).
I am using Eclipse IDE and have previously utilized the incremental deployment function in Eclipse to automatically deploy all saved changes to the project. But when I included (with Maven) the dependencies for Selenium incremental deployment stopped working. The project can still be deployed to Glassfish but I have to restart Glassfish between every change. I get the following error in Eclipse:
Exception while loading the app : java.lang.IllegalStateException: ContainerBase.addChild: start: org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: java.lang.RuntimeException: com.sun.faces.config.ConfigurationException: java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: com.sun.faces.config.ConfigurationException: Unable to parse document 'bundle://136.0:1/com/sun/faces/jsf-ri-runtime.xml': DTD factory class org.apache.xerces.impl.dv.dtd.DTDDVFactoryImpl does not extend from DTDDVFactory.. Please see server.log for more details.
org.apache.xerces.impl.dv.dtd.DTDDVFactoryImpl is included with Selenium as a transitive dependency (xerces:xercesImpl:2.11.0).
Here are my Maven dependencies:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jboss.arquillian.selenium</groupId>
<artifactId>selenium-bom</artifactId>
<version>2.44.0</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.seleniumhq.selenium</groupId>
<artifactId>selenium-htmlunit-driver</artifactId>
</dependency>
I hope there is a solution to this but after reading Jens Schauder's response in Dealing with "Xerces hell" in Java/Maven? I'm afraid there might not be. Anyone?
I currently can't reproduce the issue with a simple project, did you make sure that you don't have any other dependencies which are importing another version of xercesImpl?
You can try to place the xercesImpl-2.11.0.jar and the transitive dependency xml-apis-1.4.01.jar in the lib folder of your Glassfish domain and exclude it from your dependencies like this:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.seleniumhq.selenium</groupId>
<artifactId>selenium-htmlunit-driver</artifactId>
<version>2.44.0</version>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<artifactId>xercesImpl</artifactId>
<groupId>xerces</groupId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>

Exception occurred while accessing jsf page: Servlet.service() for servlet default threw exception: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError

I'm trying to develop a web application using following technologies JSF 2.0 , EJB 3, JPA, Maven.. It's based on MVC design pattern so I have 3 projects so far: one is an EJB project which contains business and model, the second one is the view part which contains JSF and all beans that will be used in JSF pages and the third one is an EAR projects used to unite previous project that I mentioned.
So far I made a simple app and the EAR Project was deployed successfully in JBoss 7 but whenever I try to access a page I get the following exception:
Servlet.service() for servlet default threw exception: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.ocpsoft.pretty.PrettyContext.newDetachedInstance(Ljavax/servlet/http/HttpServletRequest;)Lcom/ocpsoft/pretty/PrettyContext;
I want to mention that I'm not so familiar with these technologies.
Please let me know if you want to give you additional info such as maven dependencies or whatever you think that it can cause this error.
I have the following dependencies related to prettyfaces:
<dependency>
<groupId>com.ocpsoft</groupId>
<artifactId>ocpsoft-pretty-faces</artifactId>
<version>2.0.3</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.ocpsoft.rewrite</groupId>
<artifactId>rewrite-servlet</artifactId>
<version>2.0.11.Final</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.ocpsoft.rewrite</groupId>
<artifactId>rewrite-integration-faces-annotations</artifactId>
<version>2.0.0.Alpha5</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.ocpsoft.rewrite</groupId>
<artifactId>rewrite-config-prettyfaces</artifactId>
<version>2.0.11.Final</version>
</dependency>
I guess that the prettyfaces-core is missing, try to add this dependency :
<dependency>
<groupId>com.ocpsoft</groupId>
<artifactId>prettyfaces-core</artifactId>
<version>3.0.0</version>
</dependency>
I'm not sure about it, if it doesn't work, try the depedencies listed in the link below

Getting ClassNotFoundException in test scope

I'm trying to run tests for my webapp. I've used Spring and Hibernate for it. But running mvn package results in an ClassNotFoundException in the test tasks: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource
I already tried adding this into my pom.xml, but without success:
<dependency>
<groupId>commons-dbcp</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-dbcp</artifactId>
<version>1.4</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>
What to do here?
UPDATE
mvn -X clean package: http://paste.ubuntuusers.de/raw/409407/
I don't see any problem with DBCP here. Rather log says about some problems with autowiring Spring beans, starting with missing com.example.model.ArticleService. Declare such missing beans as Spring components and should be OK.

Apache POI (poi-ooxml) for Excel 2007 and Spring MVC DocumentBuilderFactory cannot be found

I'm having some trouble trying to include Apache POI poi-ooxml library to my project. I'm using Maven and the following dependency:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.poi</groupId>
<artifactId>poi-ooxml</artifactId>
<version>3.8</version>
</dependency>
But after doing this I'm not able to start my Spring MVC app again, Here is the stacktrace:
Exception created : org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanDefinitionStoreException: Unexpected exception parsing XML document from ServletContext resource [/WEB-INF/context/applicationContext.xml]; nested exception is javax.xml.parsers.FactoryConfigurationError: Provider for javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory cannot be found
So, what I understand is that poi-ooxml is including another xml parser that override the default Java VM defaut one that is used by Spring to read its xml configuration file.
If I exclude the 2 following libs:
xmlbeans
xml-apis
All is working fine (I'm able to start my Spring app) but of course Apache POI is no longer working as he's missing these 2 required libs...
Any advice will be greatly appreciated ;)
Thanks
I've had similiar problem after adding poi-ooxml to my existing groovy application. I've added xercesImpl to project, and it seems to be working. Maybe you should give it a try.
<dependency>
<groupId>xerces</groupId>
<artifactId>xercesImpl</artifactId>
<version>2.9.1</version>
</dependency>
