I am trying to access the TFS server of Codeplex thru a proxy that requires authentication and all I get is a 407.
I can navigate using the VS2010 browser and get Nuget packages so I know that the proxy is correctly configured but whenever I try to add the new TFS server I get a 407.
Any ideas?
I found the answer (even when I do not get why it is so difficult):

Hope it helps to somebody

I have configured TFS Proxy server and have set the source control setting of my local VS client. Also TFS Application server & TFS Proxy server both are in same network Domain.
But when i am taking get latest of any team project and second time taking the get latest of same team project at different machine but files are downloading Main server and giving below warning.
TF15013: The requested Team Foundation Server is not registered with the proxy server.
Can Anyone help me out how to resolve this issue & make fast get latest.
Thanks,
You can try to use the proxy command to configure your client to use a proxy server: see Proxy Command
eg :
c:\projects>tf proxy /add http://server:8081 /default:global /collection:http://tfsserver:8080/
If that still not work, recommend you to reconfigure the Proxy, you must use service accounts to install Team Foundation Server, and Team Foundation Server Proxy. These service accounts become the identity for the installed component.
By default, every component uses a built-in account (such as Network Service) as its service account.Built-in accounts do not use passwords and already have the Log on as a service permission, making them easier to manage, especially in a domain environment. See requirements.
After that you can reference below link to configure the TFS proxy to work with Your TFS:
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/buckh/2016/10/12/how-to-configure-a-tfs-proxy-to-work-with-team-services/
Update:
TFS 2013 is Xaml build system, double chick the definition will pop up the definition to edit. TFS 2017 is vNext build system, it will redirect to web client build progress page. That's by design, not related to the source settings.
And as far as I know, there isn't the utility or third part tools can open the vNext build definition in VS directly, vNext build definition is task independent, you can edit it conveniently via web portal.
I need to set up Kerberos authentication for TFS 2013. Is there any document that gives me steps to configure it? I have looked at the below mentioned links
http://blogs.like10.com/2012/05/09/using-friendly-dns-names-in-your-tfs-environment-with-kerberos-authentication-part-1/

My TFS still takes NTLM auth type every time. I would really appreciate if someone could send me links on how to configure Kerberos on Windows 7
Kerberos is not a TFS capability but one of active directory. If you are able to get a nervous token on the TFS accounts with the delegated URL so in your SPN, then you only need to switch TFS over.
You might find the option in the console but i am getting that It is a setup option.
Run "tfsconfig.exe setup /uninstall:all" to undo your current configuration. Then when configuring select "advanced" and you should get an option for ntlm/kerberos.
I'm currently trying to install web api project directly from vs 2013 to my local dev machine, but when I test one of my http get controllers, I get the following:
My url looks like this:
http://localhost:8081/api/Location/States?queryTerm=Ark
When I test this on my local, this url works and I get my json response.
pay no attention to the web config error in the background. If I enter anything invalid, I get an IIS error, so I know I'm hitting the right URL.
Side note: I'm using IE8 for testing.
I found out the solution, and it may be a config thing, but when I made this as an virtual application to a website, this went away, and it gave me a yellow sign of death (which is a good thing). I was able to deduce this to be an oracle issue, where it couldn't find the database connection, and then found out it couldn't resolve tns names.
So I guess Web API can not be hosted by itself on IIS? I haven't looked into it, but it seems this to be the case, unless there needs to be more tweaking involved.
i know too late for response. But i get same error when I try deploy Odata v4 Application in IIS server.
In server , i hit this error as above, i try everything config but nothing change.
At last, i try connect from client and it work.
I recognize that in Client , it download a json file from Server (in case use Odata , it seem like wsdl file in webservice) and API still work well.
For some reason, it cant download in server, but dont worry, it still work.
Hope this helps!
I've been happily using Team Foundation Server with Visual Studio 2010 for the last couple of months at my current place of work when it has suddenly stopped working. I get the following errors:
If I browse to the wiki (Sharepoint) on the TFS server it works fine in Firefox but in Internet Explorer it fails with:
No authority could be contacted for authentication.
I'm not aware of any changes to the server or my machine that would cause the errors and other users of TFS are not affected.
The TFS server is on a different domain to my machine, but usually I get prompted to login and using a domain prefixed username works. At the moment, I don't even get a login prompt anymore.
How do I fix this?
I have recently started to experience a similar issue. We also host TFS on a different domain. Twice in the last week TFS has stopped authenticating users, and I have received messages similar to above. I have no idea what is causing this, but on each occasion SQL Server Agent service was stopped. A reboot of the server and a manual restart of SQL Server agent seems to fix the problem temporarily. I'm not sure if this information is helpful, but I would also really appreciate any help in getting to the bottom of this.
We used a workaround to get past this problem. We configured an entry in the Windows Stored User Names and Passwords tool for the domain of the TFS server. It got around the problem of TFS not prompting for credentials by explicitly supplying them via this tool.
When you change your password for that domain account, you must also change the password here otherwise your account can be locked after failing authentication too many times.
I had the same problem, sorted it by upgrading to tfs2012
In my case, I changed the default port 8080 to port 80 and everything worked fine. but the message could also happen due to wrong saved credentials. you can go to the control panel of the windows and search for credentials manager and then remove your TFS credentials.
I'm trying to setup Web Deploy on IIS 7, so that 1-click publishing in Visual Studio works.
Every time i try and publish the app i get a 401 error, which seems to be failing to auth against WMSvc. I have set the build output verbosity to detailed and can see the web deploy command being used. When i try and run it from the command prompt i get the same 401 error (ERROR_USER_UNAUTHORIZED), however when i change the the authType parameter in the command from basic to NTLM it works fine and publishes correctly...
As far as i was aware WMSvc only worked with basic auth and not NTLM. As far as my server config goes i have tried setting the management service to accept only windows users and to allow Windows users and management service users, neither setting seems to make any odds.
I can connect fine using IIS manager locally to the remote server, but as soon as i try and use any of the export functionality on the remote server i get permission issues from the remote connection. This all seems most odd, can any one shed some light on this behaviour?
Just providing the answer that worked for me, after searching in vain I stumbled upon an article by Phil Haack (whilst looking for something else entirely):
It turned out I had a URL-ACL defined which was stopping everything from working.
Followed the instructions in that post and it all just worked like it should :-)
I personally wish web deploy was a bit less fragile when it comes to setting it up, works great once you've gone through the pain.
