I am manually initializing a PostgreSql database in a directory using the following command in script file on Windows and Linux :
pg_ctl init -s -w -D ..\mydb
I want to check via a script that this command run only if database is not already initialized in that directory. Is this possible?

There is a script located in following path
/usr/local/bin/subrun
The Owner & usergroup of above file is root
When I run above script locally using following command in BASH shell:
/bin/sh /usr/local/bin/subrun
It runs perfectly fine
But When I try to run same script remotely using following command in BASH shell:
ssh user#host /usr/local/bin/subrun
It throws an error :
/usr/local/bin/subrun: Command not found.
Question : How do I resolve this ? Does this has to do with 'root' (Owner & Usergroup of script)
PS: Also there is another script in the same location with different Owner & usergroup (for e.g. Owner : manager & Usergroup : admin). This script can be run locally or remotely without any issue
PS2: 'subrun' script file has following levels of permission '-rwxr-xr-x' (And I am not allowed to change permission using chmod. It says Operation not permitted
Since you run it locally as:
/bin/sh /usr/local/bin/subrun
rather than just:
/usr/local/bin/subrun
it's probaby not an executable file on either machine and so you should do the same when trying to run it remotely and use:
ssh user#host '/bin/sh /usr/local/bin/subrun'
instead of
ssh user#host /usr/local/bin/subrun
or make it executable on every machine by running chmod oug+x /usr/local/bin/subrun or similar on every machine and THEN you can call it as just /usr/local/bin/subrun on every machine.
I need to run a shell script on windows that has psql commands. I installed bash and can run the script but the psql commands are failing. So, I installed the PostgreSQL on the windows machine in this location - "C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\14\scripts\". There is a bat file in here named runpsql.bat that opens a psql shell. I can connect to my database when I run that bat file but how do I get it to do it from the shell script? Currently, my shell script has commands like -
psql -d db -U user etc but those throw a PSQL: Command not recognized error
Bellow command if i write inside a script (test.sh) and execute directly on the specific machine it works.
sshpass -p $HOST_PWD sftp testuser#host <<!
cd parent
mkdir test
bye
!
But when i try to run (directly below scrip or invoking the test.sh file in the specif path) in Jenkins with "Execute shall script on remote host using ssh" it failing with
sshpass: Failed to run command: No such file or directory
I have installed sshpass, lftp and rsync in the remote machine
Issue :
I have added export $HOST_PWD in .bashrc of specific machine as well as Jenkins but in not finding it
Script placed in specific machine, if directly executed the script in that machine it works even with $HOST_PWD. But not working if we invoke from jenkins either script or directly scrip using "Execute shall script on remote host using ssh"
Working with Changes :
Instead of $HOST_PWD if i added directly password it works.
I was trying to automate our form compilation process.
I created a .bat file that will do the following:
Login user to host
sudo -S -u oracle bash -c 'bash /frmcmp_batch.sh'
But when I try to run frmcmp_batch.sh, I'm getting the error:
FRM-91500: Unable to start/complete the build error.
It is because your display isn't right. You get this to work by setting the following commands:
export TERM=vt220
export ORACLE_TERM=vt220
Let's assume I run the following command inside a script:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
docker run --name mydb --rm -e POSTGRES_PASSWORD=kgalli -e POSTGRES_USER=kgalli -p "9999:5432" -v $PWD/db:/opt -d postgres
When I then run the following command to create a database it works fine.
docker exec -e PGPASSWORD=kgalli mydb psql -U kgalli -d template1 -c "CREATE DATABASE kgalli_test WITH OWNER kgalli ENCODING 'UTF8' LC_COLLATE = 'en_US.utf8' LC_CTYPE = 'en_US.utf8';"
However when I add this line to the script above, so the script not only starts the postgres server but also creates the database it fails.
I do not really understand why I get the following error:
psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
I know I can instruct docker postgres image to create a database on start. But this is actually not what I want to achieve. I just using this as an example to understand the problem.
When you're running it in a script, it's most likely just happening too quickly. The docker run … command returns immediately, and then docker exec … is attempting to use PostgreSQL while the database server is still starting up. You need to wait for it to be ready before creating the extra database.
That said, the postgres image has functionality in its entrypoint script to run custom initialization scripts. You can put your CREATE DATABASE … statement into a .sql file or config and mount it into /docker-entrypoint-initdb.d in the container. The postgres container will automatically run it when the database server is ready.
The docs for this seems to have disappeared, but you can see the implementation in docker-entrypoint.sh.
Using docker run, you are starting a new container, using docker exec, you are executing a command in already running container
The docker run command first creates a writeable container layer over the specified image, and then starts it using the specified command.
The docker exec command runs a new command in a running container.
If the container is paused, then the docker exec command will fail with an error
$ docker pause test
test
$ docker ps
CONTAINER ID IMAGE COMMAND CREATED STATUS PORTS NAMES
1ae3b36715d2 ubuntu:latest "bash" 17 seconds ago Up 16 seconds (Paused) test
$ docker exec test ls
