I am starting a new project using materializecss. I wanted to use the Sass setup but when I run: gem 'materialize-sass' I get the following error.
ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::CommandLineError)
Unknown command materialize-sass
I have ruby installed as I use Sass on a daily basis so I am not exactly sure what the issue is here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a similar issue, but not quite the same.
It looks like you need the gem installed first.
Run
gem install materialize-sass
-to install seperately, as per https://github.com/mkhairi/materialize-sass

I'm not well versed in terminal, but I'll try my best to make this as clear and concise as I can.
I'm trying to install SASS and get the following errors:
When using gem install sass I get .

You don't have write permissions for the /Library/Ruby/Gems/2.3.0 directory.
When using sudo gem install sass I get .
ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError)
You don't have write permissions for the /usr/bin directory.
I have Xcode installed and I have agreed to the terms.
I even tried updating my Ruby, but terminal tells me I already have the most updated version.

The worst part of all of this is that when I navigate to my Ruby/Gems/2.3.0/gems directory, there is a sass-3.5.5 folder!!! (linked image to follow)

I try running sass -v and get -bash: sass: command not found
I feel like I've tried everything that I can think of or find online. I'm at a loss and definitely need some help.
The issue can be fixed by installing RVM or Rbenv for managing ruby versions and gems.
Also, FilePermissionError can be fixed using the -n parameter
sudo gem install sass -n /usr/bin
I prefer not touching sudo command, so I managed to solve this issue by referring to SASS home page:
If you use Node.js, you can also install Sass using npm by running
npm install -g sass

I am trying to learn sass so I can develop my front end skills a little bit more because that is what I hope to be some day. The only thing is I can't get sass to work.
Whenever I run the sass --watch . command it returns this error.

I did a bit of research on this error and it was suggested on this site to just simply install the rb-fsevent file that is missing so I ran the gem install rb-fsevent command and then got this error.

so I did a bit of research on THIS error and it was suggested agin on this site to just run the install with sudo. So i did just that I didn't get an error so i was quite excited because I have been fighting with this for a while so i want back to the start of this question and ran the --watch command and got the same exact error. Can anyone help me fix this?
Your first error is because Ruby can't load the rb-fsevent gem. This could be because the gem is not installed. Trying to install the gem was a good idea.
Your second error is because you are trying to install the gem to a directory that you do not have permissions for. Using sudo to do the install is an acceptable solution. You can also do gem install --user-install to install to your home directory.
You are still getting the first error because even though the gem is installed, Ruby cannot load it. This could be because sudo installed the gem with the wrong permissions, or installed it to the wrong location, or Ruby is looking for it in the wrong location.
Thus your solution would be to
Locate the gem files you installed
Check that their permissions allow you to read them
Check ruby -e 'p $LOAD_PATH' to see if Ruby is looking in the right place for the gem
I've been using Sass 3.2.13.
I want to try out the sourcemap generation in 3.3, so I installed 3.3.
'gem list | grep sass' returns
sass (3.3.0.rc.5, 3.2.14)
I would like to invoke sass 3.3 from the commandline. I'm not using sass from a within a ruby project.
I discovered that format should work:
gem_name __versionNum__ --opts
So, I've tried this:
sass _3.3.0.rc.5_ --watch --sourcemap sass/site.sass: css/site2.css
The resulting stack trace returns
"Could not find sass (= 3.3.0.rc.5)..."
I've tried variations, like 3.3.0, 3.3, but these return stack traces with the same message about not being able to find the specified version.
Turns out that I was calling the wrong 'sass' binary.
Instead of using my rbenv gem, I was using 'sass' from '/usr/local/bin'.
I've deleted system sass. Now when I call 'sass' I get the version offered by the gem I installed via rbenv.
Yes, I know I shouldn't be deleting system binaries. It's a dirty, dirty thing to do. In the desperate case of removing system ruby from ubuntu, I think the measure is justifiable.
I have installed Ruby on my system, and now I want to install Compass. But when I execute the gem install compass command, it shows an error like this:
could not find valid gem 'compass' <>=0> in any repositary
And also:
SocketError: getadressinfo: no such host is known.<http://rubygems.org/latest_specs.4.8.gz>
I don't know what the problem is. If I run ruby -v, it shows the Ruby version. So what's the problem with installing Compass?
Can anyone explain this to me properly? I've searched Google, but all I could find was some proxy problem - and I couldn't understand how to set the proxy at all.
I'm using Windows and a company internet connection, so I don't know the username and password of my proxy.
I was behind a proxy and HumberFrench's solution above helped:
Go to Ruby bin folder:
cd c:/Ruby193/bin
And then install compass gem:
gem install compass --http-proxy http://<proxy_adreess>:<port_of_proxy>
Another tip: am on Aptana Studio, so this could be run from within Aptana's terminal.

I had the same problem, finally solved it manually.
Goto the rubygems compass page, and download the gem by clicking the Download link. Scroll down and you will see three Runtime Dependencies. Goto each of them and download those gems also. Put all of them in a directory, and try
gem install downloaded_compass_filename
This should solve your problem.
If it gives an repository not found error message, you can force gem to try local files through the gem --local install option
if you use a proxy, and get error, do it
gem install compass --http-proxy http://<proxy_adreess>:<port_of_proxy>
gem install -h gives you a lor of options
The proxy is the most likely cause. You will have to get permission from the network admin, or manually download compass. For more info, See this SA post.
If you decide to go the manual route here is a link to the RubyGems compass page. This not ideal, but also better than having to write css without compass magic ^^

On windows i had a few instalations of ruby:
C:\ruby187
and
C:\Ruby200-x64
install compass in both places, using:
gem install compass
Try running the install command in the bin folder.
$ cd C:\Your_Ruby_Folder\bin
$ gem install compass

Uninstall ruby end deleted folder ruby
Download ruby version 1.9.x
After thet install sass
last stem: install compass
I need to include a rubygem in a simple macruby application i am creating in XCode. Using require 'rubygems' does not give an error, but the next line to require any other gems has a load error. I installed the gems using macgems. Thanks in advance.
The load error might be an indication that the gem doesn't work on Macruby. Post the error and someone might have more info on that gem or that error.
Did the gem actually install correctly? If it did install, does it work from the command line? Try creating a simple script that requires rubygems and your gem and run that on the command line outside of xcode and see if the problem is compatibility with that gem.
A while back in the 0.5 days I had this problem with a gem (miniexif iirc) that would install via macgems but not load or run. This might be a similar problem.
