I've got a deis cluster correctly setup. Everything is working fine, deploys, scales, etc. It is set at a domain that I will call mydeiscluster.com
Now it has come to the part where I need to hide the application foo, which is accessed by foo.mydeiscluster.com behind using my other domain DNS.
I want that dashboard.myotherdomain.com masks foo.mydeiscluster.com, just like it would happend using heroku.
Has anyone done that?
Just setting the CNAME record on myotherdomain.com does not work, I need some config on deis but I was not able to find it using the docs.
Any clues?
I believe you are looking for a Custom Domain, which adds support for alternate CNAMEs to your existing app. You can set this with:
deis domains:add dashboard.myotherdomain.com -a foo
This will ensure traffic addressed to dashboard.myotherdomain.com is routed to the foo application. Note you must configure DNS to point to the Deis router mesh.

I have developed an app and make it available via Heroku. Now I would like to add a custom domain name via Ionos however I don't know how to configure it. When using EC2 instances I would configure an static ip address but for Heroku, I don't know what to do. I have checked other post about this but none a precise or recent about what to do.
Thanks for you attention and have a Great day.
Had the exact same issue and here's how I made it work (just specifying I'm not an expert, so take this answer with a grain of salt):
First you'd have to go to Heroku in your app setting and then add the domain name you bought. It's important that you write the host when adding it, like put either www. or *. at the beginning of the domain. It will give you back a DNS target which you will then need to use on Ionos.
Secondly, you'd have to bind this DNS target on Ionos using a CNAME. Just go to your domains, click the one in your list, then open DNS and click Add a record. Choose CNAME and then put www as provider and past the DNS target you copied in target field. Finally, confirm the changes
Wait a few seconds/minutes, navigate to www.yourdomain.whatever and tada!
About static IP address, Heroku made some docs, and that won't work, you'd have to use dynamic ones. So in a nutshell, use CNAMEs instead of A records
Here are some docs if you want to dig more into this
Currently I am using Herokuapp to host my web application which is basically a personal website. With the default heroku given domain, its working properly. But whenever I am addiding the custom domain to my app (also adding CNAME for DNS target in my DNS registrar (which is Infomaniak.com), it does not work. I have tried everything (also waiting for more than a day to check if the app shows up in my custom domain) but was unable to do it until now. I have tried support from Infomaniak as well but did not work. Did anyone else face this issue and can anyone help me in this regard?
Currently i have an app on Heroku with a wildcard subdomain working like this:
client1.myapp.com, client2.myapp.com, ...
This is working fine.
Then, i'd like that each client can access this apps using their own personal domains. So, testing this on my personal domain, i would like to configure test.mydomain.com like this:
CNAME test --- client1.myapp.com
But, this is not working yet. I keep getting the heroku error 'No such app, There's nothing here, yet.'.
Not sure what i am missing. Is it a problem related to my actual Laravel app? Heroku config? DNS?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Assuming your application will provide an hostname for each client (actually, it would probably be preferable to have a single hostname as in any case it looks like they will all point to the same Heroku app), then you have to complete all these tasks in order to make it work:
Add the subdomain client1.myapp.com as domain attached to the Heroku app
Configure the DNS record for client1.myapp.com
Ensure client1.myapp.com resolves (dig client1.myapp.com)
Add the customer subdomain/domain to your Heroku app, otherwise Heroku will reject routing the requests for that domain
Configure the DNS record for the customer subdomain/domain to CNAME client1.myapp.com
Ensure the customer subdomain/domain resolves
According to your issue description, I assume you probably did not configure the customer subdomain/domain as domain to your Heroku app.
Let me keep this as simple as possible. I have looked at a bunch of other posts related to this but haven't found an answer :(. I am hosting my web app on Heroku and using Gandi as my domain provider.
Note: The top answer from this post is what I used as my basis.
A few days ago I set up web forwarding on Gandi so that my mydomain.gg forwards over to www.mydomain.gg. I also set up custom domains in Heroku. It looks like this:
*.mood.gg wildcard.mood.gg.herokudns.com
www.mood.gg www.mydomain.gg.herokudns.com
mood.gg mydomain.gg.herokudns.com
I then went into Gandi and added these to my zone file so it looks like this:
# A 217.70.184.38
* CNAME mydomain.gg.herokudns.com.
www CNAME www.mydomain.gg.herokudns.com.
The A tag is there for the web forwarding where the IP points to a Gandi IP. Heroku changes IP addresses frequently, which is why I use CNAME.
Cool!
This all worked perfectly for 3 days, where I didn't touch my zone file or Heroku app for those 3 days at all.
So here is where the oddness begins. I upgraded my Heroku server to a more expensive plan and pushed some new code to it as well. A few hours later, my root domain mydomain.gg breaks and doesn't forward over to www.mydomain.gg. If I go directly to www.mydomain.gg it works perfectly.
So my question comes down to, where did this break? I never touched my Gandi zone file. All I did was push to my Heroku server and it seemed to break the web forwarding with Gandi. How did pushing to Heorku cause something to mess up with Gandi where all I'm specifying is a Heroku DNS that didn't change at all?
Another thing is, Gandi says they don't support naked domain CNAMEs which is why I use web forwarding. But then whats the point of this line in my zone file:
* CNAME mood.gg.herokudns.com.
Any help would be appreciated!
Just bought a new domain on https://iwantmyname.com/. For the purpose of this post lets assume the domain is example.fm
I set up domain forwarding where I got example.fm to point to example.herokuapp.com. Everything seems to work, but after the site is forwarded, the browsers textbox displays the old example.herokuapp.com domain instead of example.fm
I already added example.fm to heroku with heroku domains:add example.fm, but that didn't seem to change anything.
Any thoughts?
So the people at iwantmyname.com have been extremely helpful.
It turns out that I only did URL forwarding, which isn't the recommended way of setting up a domain through them.
They have a specific system with dealing with heroku here: mysite.herokuapp.com
I got rid of the forwarding and set up my domain completely through Heroku custom domain DNS setup.
