I am currently running a script (check_files.sh) that may or may not produce match* files (eg. match1.txt, match2.txt, etc. I then want to go on to run an R script on the produced match* files.
However, before I run the R script, I have tried a line in my script which checks if the files are present.

However, I keep getting an error message (as there are often a lot of match files producted):

Is there an alternative to [ -s match* ] which would not throw up the error message? I take it that the error message appears as there are multiple match* files produced.

Note that * can sometimes cause problems if filenames have spaces or special characters in them. That is why I always redirect any lists to a file, from which I work from. Also, the results list from * might exceed shell limits, causing different issues.
Also, "-rp" implies recursive, so directory contents. But earlier you stated that you were only looking at files. So the assumption is that there are no sub-directories under the directory where you are trying to find old files.
I would process the file archiving, then I would check the parent directories to purge directories that are left empty after the archiving. This is a safety measure in case of power loss.
You could consider adapting the following into your script:

However if it returns false (or if [ ! -f "$file" ] or ! [ -f "$file" ] return true), there are many different possibilities:
the file doesn't exist
the file exists but is not a regular file (could be a device, fifo, directory, socket...)
the file exists but you don't have search permission to the parent directory
the file exists but that path to access it is too long
the file is a symlink to a regular file, but you don't have search permission to some of the directories involved in the resolution of the symlink.
... any other reason why the stat() system call may fail.

To know for sure that the file doesn't exist, we'd need the stat() system call to return with an error code of ENOENT (ENOTDIR tells us one of the path components is not a directory is another case where we can tell the file doesn't exist by that path). Unfortunately the [ command doesn't let us know that. It will return false whether the error code is ENOENT, EACCESS (permission denied), ENAMETOOLONG or anything else.
The [ -e "$file" ] test can also be done with ls -Ld -- "$file" > /dev/null. In that case, ls will tell you why the stat() failed, though the information can't easily be used programmatically:

At least ls tells me it's not because the file doesn't exist that it fails. It's because it can't tell whether the file exists or not. The [ command just ignored the problem.
With the zsh shell, you can query the error code with the $ERRNO special variable after the failing [ command, and decode that number using the $errnos special array in the zsh/system module:

I'm trying to compile a very simple bash script that will do the following actions (the script I have so far doesn't seem to function at all so I won't waste time putting this up for you to look at)
I need it to find files by their names. I need the script to take the user input and search the .waste directory for a match, should the folder be empty i'd need to echo out "No match was found because the folder is empty!", and just normally failing to find a match a simple "No match found."

find /path/to/your/.waste -name 'filename.*' -print
Alternatively, you can set this as a function in your .bash_profile
searchwaste() {
find /path/to/your/.waste -name "$1" -print
}
Note that there are quotes around the $1. This will allow you to do file globbing.
searchwaste "*.txt"
The above command would search your .waste directory for any .txt files

Btw. in *nix world there are not folders, but there are directories :)
