I have 2 env.rb file(for desktop browser and mobile browsers) which has all the required environment related setups done.
The below line is present in both env.rb files but it does not work when included in one of the file(mobile browser). These are the standard gems used.
require 'time_diff'
require 'rubyXL'
require 'Prawn'
All though the files are exactly the same except including few more external libraries, we get the below error when running the Appium script.
cannot load such file -- time-diff (LoadError)
Any idea where to look for the problem?
EDIT:
The difference in both the files are below. Apart from these lines, other lines are related to normal variable assignment and config file handling.
File 1:
$LOAD_PATH<< File.expand_path('../features/DesktopWeb/pages', 'common.rb')
File 2:
$LOAD_PATH<< File.expand_path('../features/MobileWeb/pages', 'common.rb')
I faced same issue and i tried the below steps that resolved my issue.
Add all gems in Gemfile.
require 'time_diff',
require 'rubyXL',
require 'Prawn',
run "gem install bundler" this will install the bundler.
run "bundle install" from the project directory where the Gemfile is placed.
This will install all the gems and there dependency gems.
Then try to run your code...
Hope this will resolve your issue.

I'm following along this tutorial on rspec using this page: Test First: Learn Ruby and using this Github repo: Github Repo for same course using rspec v3. My issue is that after cloning the repo, running bundle install in the root directory, and then rspec --init to create the spec_helper.rb file, I run rake spec and I end up with this error regarding a dependency: ~\.rbenv/versions/2.3.0/lib/ruby/site_ruby/2.3.0/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:55:in 'require': cannot load such file -- pry-byebug (LoadError)
The thing is that the pry-byebug gem is installed. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it, removed the repo and restarted, but no matter what I get this error, and I'm not sure how to resolve it.
I'm new to programming and to this site so any information I've left out I can easily provide.
EDIT: I eventually figured out my rookie mistake: there's a folder in the path that has a space in it. Changing that fixed the issue.
Spaces in the file path to the project cause problems, apparently. I edited the offending folder and rspec then worked as intended.
I am trying to include the ruby-mysql gem in my ruby script. I have installed the gem using bundler but when I run bundle exec ./mysql_connector, I receive the error ./mysql_connector:4:in ``require': cannot load such file -- ruby-mysql (LoadError). Can you please help me troubleshoot what the problem is?
What I did
Installed rails in my home directory.
I do not have root access to the server so I have installed rails in my local directory by following the instructions here:
http://www.r-bloggers.com/installing-ruby-on-linux-as-a-user-other-than-root/
Created a directory for my application.
My application resides in my home directory in a folder called connector. It has a Gemfile that looks like this:
source 'https://rubygems.org'
gem 'ruby-mysql'
Call bundle install.
Using ruby-mysql 2.9.14
Using bundler 1.11.2
Bundle complete! 1 Gemfile dependency, 2 gems now installed.
Bundled gems are installed into ./vendor/bundle.
Add dependencies to my script. My script is in connector/mysql_connector and it reads:
#!/home/dcox/bin/ruby
require 'rubygems'
require 'bundler/setup'
require 'ruby-mysql'
Make script executable. I saw that you need to run bundle exec using an executable file, so I followed the instructions here to make my script executable: http://commandercoriander.net/blog/2013/02/16/making-a-ruby-script-executable/
Run the script. I execute using bundle exec mysql_connector and see:
/home/dcox/bin/mysql_connector:4:in `require': cannot load such file -- ruby-mysql (LoadError)
from /home/dcox/bin/mysql_connector:4:in `<main>'
Is it the $LOAD_PATH? After searching around for answers, I discovered a lot of SO answers as well as a blog post (https://codedecoder.wordpress.com/2013/09/23/require-and-load-in-ruby-loaderror-cannot-load-such-file/) that seem to suggest the problem is that the gem is not installed in a directory on the $LOAD_PATH. Here is what I see when I run $LOAD_PATH from IRB:
irb(main):002:0> $LOAD_PATH
=> ["/home/dcox/lib/ruby/site_ruby/2.1.0",
"/home/dcox/lib/ruby/site_ruby/2.1.0/x86_64-linux",
"/home/dcox/lib/ruby/site_ruby", "/home/dcox/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/2.1.0",
"/home/dcox/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/2.1.0/x86_64-linux",
"/home/dcox/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby", "/home/dcox/lib/ruby/2.1.0",
"/home/dcox/lib/ruby/2.1.0/x86_64-linux"]
Next I checked to see the location of ruby-mysql:
dcox#analytics1:~/connector$ bundle show ruby-mysql
/data/home/dcox/connector/vendor/bundle/ruby/2.1.0/gems/ruby-mysql-2.9.14
Obviously my connector/vendor/bundle path is not on the $LOAD_PATH. I could add it, but I have a feeling I am missing something simple here because bundler is supposed to work as long as you follow the instructions, right?
Any advice or help is very much appreciated! Thanks!!
If you just want to require this specific gem, require 'mysql' should work (e.g., https://github.com/tmtm/ruby-mysql/blob/master/test/test_mysql.rb#L10).
Your file should call Bundler.setup http://bundler.io/bundler_setup.html
Better yet, if you instead call Bundler.require(:default) it will setup and require all the gems in your Gemfile for you.
I'm completely lost with ruby "require" (and I don't have the option for require_relative since my code is meant to run with ruby 1.8.7.
First some sample code.
requester.rb
require './column/main_column'
....
column/main_column.rb
require './helper' # helper.rb being in the root dir
....
column/segment_column
require './column/main_column'
require './helper' # helper.rb being in the root dir
....
I'm completely lost in how should I use my requires to make my code usable inside a gem and in a standalone way (without assuming a previous gem installation). I was reading at Jekyll's code and every dependencies seems to be loaded in the main rb file which to my opinion is a bit dirty and still do resolve the problem if column/segment_column.rb needs to be called independently.
Please try to argument about different approaches and why one is the best.
You should require files without the extension and relative to your gem project's lib folder.
For example, given this structure:
example-gem/
lib/
example/
gem.rb
example.rb
example-gem.gemspec
You'd require the main example module using:
require 'example'
And in the example.rb file you'd find:
require 'example/gem'
This set of conventions is adopted by the community and is documented on the RubyGems Guides. If they fail, it is often because your gem's lib directory is not in Ruby's $LOAD_PATH, which usually means the gem is not installed.
Building and installing gems during development is cumbersome. For that reason, gems like Bundler became part of the toolboxes of many Rubyists. Bundler lets you use your gem without having to build or install it locally. You can simply bundle exec a script that uses your gem or use bundle console in order to interact with it.
I am attempting to deploy a small command-line application written in Ruby. Many of the gems that the application depends on are hosted on my github account. I have specified their locations in the Gemfile appropriately. When I clone the repo on the deployment machine and run bundle install from the root, all goes smoothly. I can then run the command line app (named "hippo") with bin/hippo. I would like to install the app to the system so that I do not need to patch $PATH or specify the path to the executable in order to use it.
When I run gem install /path/to/my/.gem/file, installation fails and says that it cannot resolve the dependencies to my personal gems hosted on my Github account. I gather this is because the gem install command does not read the Gemfile, only the gemspec (why on earth did the bundler people name their file Gemfile instead of BundleFile or something?), and the locations of the gems are specified in the Gemfile (there is no way to point to a github gem in a gemspec, right?). I have the same issue when I use the rake install task that comes with a bundle-scaffolded gem. However, when I run bundle exec gem install /path/to/my/gemfile then it installs OK, I guess because it sees my gems on the bundler-altered load path and decides that they are already installed. But then, when I try to run the executable, it fails because it can't find the dependencies when they are required. (Note that the executable has require bundler/setup as its first line after the shebang).
So I ask: what is a good way to deploy, with bundler, a command line application that depends on non-rubygems-hosted gems?
bundle exec sets up your load path correctly so that the gems are visible when you require bundler/setup. One option would be to always run your binary with bundle exec bin/hippo.
Something more suited to your purposes might be to run bundle install --standalone, which generates a bundle/bundler/setup.rb file within your project's directory. That file sets up load paths correctly for you, so you'd just need to do something like require_relative '../bundle/bundler/setup' from your binary instead of require 'bundler/setup'.
I need to include a rubygem in a simple macruby application i am creating in XCode. Using require 'rubygems' does not give an error, but the next line to require any other gems has a load error. I installed the gems using macgems. Thanks in advance.
The load error might be an indication that the gem doesn't work on Macruby. Post the error and someone might have more info on that gem or that error.
Did the gem actually install correctly? If it did install, does it work from the command line? Try creating a simple script that requires rubygems and your gem and run that on the command line outside of xcode and see if the problem is compatibility with that gem.
A while back in the 0.5 days I had this problem with a gem (miniexif iirc) that would install via macgems but not load or run. This might be a similar problem.
