How to reference and run a python document from the python interpreter - windows

I just want to be able to run a python script from the interpreter, so that I can work on my changes to my script in notepad or other editor, save, and then interactively test changed code in the python interpreter.
Also, IDLE is not a solution. I'm operating on a government computer that is blocking the port it uses to communicate interaction between console and module.
To clear up any confusion, here's a demonstration of what I'm trying to do:

Okay so I found a statement that does what I want. exec(open('dir').read()). The problem I think is that the directory I want to refer to contains periods. But I'm sure this will work, because open('dir').read() produces a string of the contents of a document specified, as long as I reference the likes of C:\myTest.py, and exec() obviously runs strings as input. So how can I reference files from the location I want?

Okay so the problem seems to be that Windows addresses often contain what python sees as 'unicode exits'. I'm not sure what they do or how they work, but I know they start with \ and are followed by a single letter and that there are enough of them to use up half the alphabet. There are a few solutions but only one is worth a damn for this application. I came across an operator that can be used in conjunction with strings, similarly to how + can be used to concatenate multiple strings, it seems r or R if you prefer (interestingly), can be used immediately before a string to tell the interpreter to take the string 'literally' as a string, and nothing else.
One would think that the quotes would be enough to express this, but they aren't and I'll probably eventually find out why. But for now, here's the answer to my question. I hope someone else finds it useful:

Is there a way CMD can open a folder with an emoji in its name by using os.execute in Lua 5.2?

As soon as I try to access a folder/file containing an emoji in its name from my Lua 5.2 script, for example like this:
os.execute('start "" "' .. path .. "\\scripts\\menu\\📄 My Scripts" .. '"')
The Windows' Command Prompt simply refuses to open it with the following error message:
I'm aware Windows' Command Prompt doesn't support emojis and therefore is not possible to make it work just like that, but my doubt is if won't exist some workaround or whatever I can do to ensure any Windows/Unix user is going to able to get the folder open by my Lua script without any problem.
I have tried i.e. things like use the codes instead (1246 and U+1F4F0 in this page facing up case) without success. Couldn't I for example simply use some kind of "wildcard" instead? I mean, knowing it's always going to be the very first character in the name. Or, well, any other ideas will be welcomed, cause nothing I'm trying really seems to work...
Of course if it's going to represent any problem I'll simply refuse to use them, but it came in handy for some "first sight" folder distinction and, if possible, I'd like to can count this little visual resource 🙄
This is a Problem about how the string is constructed.
I found only one solution with [[command "path"]] (on Windows 11 and Lua 5.3)...
os.execute([[start ]] .. path .. [["\scripts\menu\📄 My Scripts"]])
-- My Testpath is/was: os.execute([[dir "%localappdata%\nvim\📄 Lua"]])
...the long string ([[]]) will not be interpreted (coercionated) by Lua.
That also have the side effect that you can use single backslashs with that kind of string.
Environment variable expansion (e.g. Windows: %localappdata%) only works inside doublequotes.
Single quotes instead ([[command '%localappdate%\path\']]) will not work (expanded).
os.execute accepts only ANSI-encoded strings (win-1252 in European Windows), but it is unable to encode an emoji.
Hint: you can create .bat-file to do the task for you and invoke it from Lua with os.execute.

How to find foreign language used in "C comments"

I have a large source code where most of the documentation and source code comments are in english. But one of the minor contributors wrote comments in a different language, spread in various places.
Is there a simple trick that will let me find them ? I imagine first a way to extract all comments from the code and generate a single text file (with possible source file / line number info), then pipe this through some language detection app.
If that matters, I'm on Linux and the current compiler on this project is CLang.
The only thing that comes to mind is to go through all of the code manually and check it yourself. If it's a similar language, that doesn't contain foreign letters, consider using something with a spellchecker. This way, the text that isn't recognized will get underlined, and easy to spot.
Other than that, I don't see an easy way to go through with this.
You could make a program, that reads the files and only prints the comments out to another output file, where you then spell check that file, but this would seem to be a waste of time, as you would easily be able to spot the comments yourself.
If you do make a program for that, however, keep in mind that there are three things to check for:
If comment starts with /*, make sure it stops reading when encountering */
If comment starts with //, only read one line - unless:
If line starting with // ends with \, read next line as well
While it is possible to detect a language from a string automatically, you need way more words than fit in a usual comment to do so.

What exactly is going on in Proc::Background?

I am trying to write a script that automates other perl scripts. Essentially, I have a few scripts that rollup data for me and need to be run weekly. I also have a couple that need to be run on the weekend to check things and email me if there is a problem. I have the email worked out and everything but the automation. Judging by an internet search, it seems as though using Proc::Background is the way to go. I tried writing a very basic script to test it and can't quite figure it out. I am pretty new to Perl and have never automated anything before (other than through windows task scheduler), so I really don't understand what the code is saying.
My code:

I receive an error that says no executable program located at C:... Can someone explain to me what exactly the code (Proc::Background) is doing? I will then at least have a better idea of how to accomplish my task and debug in the future. Thanks.
I did notice on Proc::Background's documentation the following:
The Win32::Process module is always used to spawn background processes
on the Win32 platform. This module always takes a single string
argument containing the executable's name and any option arguments.
In addition, it requires that the absolute path to the executable is
also passed to it. If only a single argument is passed to new, then
it is split on whitespace into an array and the first element of the
split array is used at the executable's name. If multiple arguments
are passed to new, then the first element is used as the executable's
name.
So, it looks like it requires an executable, which a Perl script would not be, but "perl.exe" would be.
I typically specify the "perl.exe" in my Windows tasks as well:
C:\dwimperl\perl\bin\perl.exe "C:\Dropbox\Programming\Perl\mccabe.pl"

Windows 'choice' command messing up Ruby 'gets' method

Open up irb and
type gets. It should work fine.
Then try system("choice /c YN") It should work as expected.
Now try gets again, it behaves oddly.
Can someone tell me why this is?
EDIT: For some clarification on the "odd" behavior, it allows me to type for gets, but doesn't show me the characters and I have to press the enter key twice.
Terminal input-output handling is dark and mysterious art. Anyone trying to make colorized output of bash work in windows PowerShell via ssh knows that. (And various shortcutting habits like Ctrl+Backspace only make things worse.)
One of the possible reasons for your problem is special characters handling. Every terminal out there can type characters in number of different modes, and it parses its own output in search for certain character sequences in order to toggle states.
F.e. here one can find ANSI escape code sequences, one of possible supported standards among different kind of terminals.
See there Esc[5;45m? That will make all the following output to blink on magenta background. And there is significantly more stuff like that out there.
So, the answer to your question taken literally is — your choice command messes something with output modes using special escape sequences, and ruby's gets breaks in that quirk special mode of terminal operation.
But more useful will be the link to HighLine gem documentation. Why one might want to implement platform-specific and obtrusive behavior when it is possible to implement the same with about 12 LOC? All the respect for the Gist goes to botimer, I've only stumbled into his code using search.

Are there any invalid linux filenames?

If I wanted to create a string which is guaranteed not to represent a filename, I could put one of the following characters in it on Windows:
\ / : * ? | < >
e.g.
this-is-a-filename.png
?this-is-not.png
Is there any way to identify a string as 'not possibly a file' on Linux?
There are almost no restrictions - apart from '/' and '\0', you're allowed to use anything. However, some people think it's not a good idea to allow this much flexibility.
An empty string is the only truly invalid path name on Linux, which may work for you if you need only one invalid name. You could also use a string like "///foo", which would not be a canonical path name, although it could refer to a file ("/foo"). Another possibility would be something like "/dev/null/foo", since /dev/null has a POSIX-defined non-directory meaning. If you only need strings that could not refer to a regular file you could use "/" or ".", since those are always directories.
Technically it's not invalid but files with dash(-) at the beginning of their name will put you in a lot of troubles. It's because it has conflicts with command arguments.
I personally find that a lot of the time the problem is not Linux but the applications one is using on Linux.
Take for example Amarok. Recently I noticed that certain artists I had copied from my Windows machine where not appearing in the library. I check and confirmed that the files were there and then I noticed that certain characters in the folder names (Named for the artist) were represented with a weird-looking square rather than an actual character.
In a shell terminal the filenames look even stranger: /Music/Albums/Einst$'\374'rzende\ Neubauten is an example of how strange.
While these files were definitely there, Amarok could not see them for some reason. I was able to use some shell trickery to rename them to sane versions which I could then re-name with ASCII-only characters using Musicbrainz Picard. Unfortunately, Picard was also unable to open the files until I renamed them, hence the need for a shell script.
Overall this a a tricky area and it seems to get very thorny if you are trying to synchronise a music collection between Windows and Linux wherein certain folder or file names contain funky characters.
The safest thing to do is stick to ASCII-only filenames.
