I just bought the new Dell XPS 13 Developer edition which came preinstalled with ubuntu 14.04.
After the initial boot it seemed a bit slow, but then it updated and worked fine, then later the same day seemed to slow down again.
Even running programs like eclipse it seems very laggy on, which is odd. As the specifications should be fine;
16gb Ram
i7-6560U cpu
64-bit
500gb ssd.
I'm not sure what to post to help, so any suggestions would be great.
Thank you!
Check what is using much system load using the command top.
You can also use htop which is easier to read.
For that install it using the following command:
sudo apt-get install htop
Have you tried reinstalling Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS on your computer?
In future, please use the Ask Ubuntu forums for such questions.
I had a similar issue in my lenovo thinkpad with i7 and 16GB. pycharm and android studio was exteremely slow and it was almost not usable for any development. Even it took a while for the terminal to start.
Finally I found a solution for my issue. I needed to disable "speed step" feature in BIOS.

I have installed a fresh version of Ubuntu 20.4 on my band new Asus Tuf Dash F15 laptop. Then I went into the software update settings and switched the driver to nvidia-460 proprietary using the GUI. I apply the changes and restart and I get stuck at a boot loading screen. The error is /dev/nvm1e0 clean: xxxblocks/xxx.
Specs: Nvidia RTX 36060 mobile Intel i7 40gb ram 1tb storage
I have tried installing the nvidia drivers 4 different ways, according to the nvidia official installation guide and multiple medium forums. Every time I get the same problem and have to alt+shift+f2 my way into the terminal to sudo apt-get purge nvidia* to be able to boot back in.
I've installed nvidia diver on ubuntu many other times according to the nvidia official docs and never ran into this error. I am concerned it may be hardware incompatibility at this point?
I've been trying for five days now and re-installed ubuntu multiple times, varying the partitions and installation methods. Everything is working fine until I try and switch to nvidia driver. I even tried some older and new driver versions and the nvidia cuda toolkit 10 and 11. Please help, thank you.
I have a dell inspiron 5559 and i used to have a dual boot windows 10 and ubuntu 16.0.4.
After an update of windows 10 i got many problems like my graphic card driver didnt get auto-update and my cpu fan got some problem
After changing my fan windows would enter an automatic repair and before even starting it... it would jump into blue screen and enter a restart loop while my linux would work just fine
I tried installing or repairing windows but before the page for chosing language blue screen apears again and system jumps out of installation
I started a system diagnose and ram memmory test but there wasnt any error.
So i thought maybe its grub menu or linux's problem and i used rm rf root in ubuntu (that was a foolish mistake im really sad about this now) after that still i cant install or repair windows. and when i turn on my pc an error apears
//
Error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.
Entering rescue mod...
Grub rescue>
//
I tried different windows dvd's for installation all had same problem. And i tried installing or trying ubuntu or kali live using an usb but various errors show up like bootmgr is missing or....
Can anyone help?
Sorry if my text had some english problems :)))
May be formatting the entire hard drive then install Windows or Ubuntu would work for you.
I ran into an error after installing VMware Fusion on my mac, that it couldn't find /dev/vmmon. After some digging, I've learned that there are only so many available character devices, and that other software I have has consumed them.
Since I actively use Viscosity and Virtualbox (for the time being), the only other one that I could find I had was Intel HAXM driver.
Instructions online suggest to run a script to uninstall it, however that script did not exist on my laptop.
I unloaded the driver with the command:
sudo kextunload -b com.intel.kext.intelhaxm
I wanted to determine if there is anything else I need to do, will this driver attempt to reload during boot?
Thanks!
The Intel HAXM docs show that as of 2018, there is an uninstall script:
sudo /Library/Extensions/intelhaxm.kext/Contents/Resources/uninstall.sh
I had the same issue, Tim Potter's solution fixed my issue ,
sudo kextunload -b com.intel.kext.intelhaxm
Thanks
Cannot find /dev/vmmon (VMware Fusion 8.5.1 on macOS 10.12.1)
I had the same problem.
After a lot of trial and error, and helpful support from VMware I got it to work by
Create another user on the mac
log in as that new user
start fusion
create a new virtual machine (custom, windows7, no actual OS installation)
If machine starts, then vmmon is restored correctly
switch back to your normal user, start fusion and your existing vm
I have not investigated WHY this works, and VMware-support couldnĀ“t tell me either. For now - I do not care. It works, and I can run my vms again.
Can anyone tell me what to do. I'm trying to install XDK 2366 on windows 10. When i click the xdk_web_master_2366.exe file it says Installing Intel XDK then after 5-10 seconds it just disappears and the installation stops. No error message. I've tried to turn off the firewall and disable windows defender but still facing the same problem. If anyone can assist i would greatly appreciate it.. Thanx
See the instructions on this Intel XDK forum post for doing a complete uninstall, in case you have a partial install that is getting in the way. Do everything up to the "finally" step. Those instructions were written for people that wanted to stay with a previous version of the XDK.
Do not install that older version that is posted in that thread, it will be obsolete very soon.
Host machine was ported from 11.10 to 12.04 LTS (Xubuntu)
Virtualbox image is win7 x64
With upgrade /dev/vboxdrv was missing, so within synaptics I reinstalled:
virtualbox (4.1.12dsfg-2 not OSE)
virtualbox-qt 4.1.12dsfg
virtualbox-dkms 4.1.12dsfg
Then it works again but my windows is badly crashed. Once started and desktop icons pops out it's really slow and crash (network icon is also blocked)
I reinstalled guest additions, but does not make any difference.
Nothing is serious because I still have available snapshots.
I'm asking for advices, like for example how do I clean reinstall (clear parameters) vbox ?
Is there any workaround, or do I need to wait fresh 12.04LTS updates to fix this pbm by magic ?
I can confirm this bug on two of my Ubuntu 12.04 machines (i7 Desktop, Samsung Dual Core Laptop):
All my Windows (Win7, WinServer2003,WinServer 2008) 64bit guest machines which were working under Ubuntu 11.10 behave the same way after upgrading / reinstalling to Ubuntu Precise:
During guest bootup or shortly after bootup (sometimes I can even access the guest's desktop for a moment) the complete system host + guest freezes completly.
The Vbox.log doesnt contain any hint. Even a fresh install of Ubuntu Precise has the same error (with the same guest machines).
I have not found any combination of guest settings which prevents this freeze yet. Even using the OSE edition of Virtualbox 4.1.12-UbuntuR7724S has the same error.
The probably-related VirtualBox bug ticket says it is fixed in VirtualBox source, and also details a workaround via grub.
The Debian bug is here.
Hopefully the patch will be applied to Ubuntu-12.04 .
(This answer is also at: https://askubuntu.com/questions/130726/win-7-virtual-box-vm-fails-to-start-after-upgrade-to-12-04 )
I can't be sure that I was having the same problem, but I also just upgraded from ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 and attempting to boot my virtual machine (xp 32bit) would cause the host to freeze.
The fix was to do the following:
Enable absolute pointing device (almost certainly wasnt this that fixed it but hey ho!)
Enable VT-x/AMD-V acceleration and nested paging (found under settings->System->Acceleration)
Disable video acceleration (again dont think it was this but I don't fancy fiddling now it works)
Hope this works for you too.
