Setting a file object by using a variable with .Files - vbscript

I'm using this with HP Operations Manager, which uses the PARAMETER section so you can define variables from within the HPOM policy. This currently works for the one file hardcoded, but I want to be able to use the PARAMETER to set a filename, so the script is universal.
What this does is to check whether a specific file exists, and sets a variable (Rule.Status = True) if it is older than some amount of minutes specified in the FileAge variable.
Right now I am using:
Set MonitorFile = MonitorFolder.Files("EDI.001")
That works fine. But when I try to do:
Set MonitorFile = MonitorFolder.Files(FileName)
It fails with following error:
Invalid procedure call or argument.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way of using a variable in this scenario?
Here is the whole script:
'PARAMETERS START
'PARAMETER FolderName STRING DEFAULT "D:\RFInput\InBoxPO" VALUE "D:\RFInput\InBoxPO\" SESSION
Dim FolderName
FolderName = "D:\RFInput\InBoxPO\"
Session("FolderName") = FolderName
'PARAMETER FileAge INT DEFAULT "60" VALUE "1" SESSION
Dim FileAge
FileAge = 1
Session("FileAge") = FileAge
'PARAMETER FolderDisplayName STRING DEFAULT "InBoxPO" VALUE "InBoxPO" SESSION
Dim FolderDisplayName
FolderDisplayName = "InBoxPO"
Session("FolderDisplayName") = FolderDisplayName
'PARAMETER FileName STRING DEFAULT "EDI.001" VALUE "EDI.001" SESSION
Dim FileName
FileName = "EDI.001"
Session("FileName") = FileName
'PARAMETERS END
Dim fs, MonitorFolder, MonitorFile, objShell, MinutesOld
Dim objFile, listNames
' Set constants for working with files
Const ForReading = 1, ForWriting = 2, ForAppending = 8
Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Set fs = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set MonitorFolder = fs.GetFolder(FolderName)
Rule.Status = False
For Each objFile In MonitorFolder.Files
listNames = objFile.Name
If InStr(listNames, FileName) = 1 Then
Set MonitorFile = MonitorFolder.Files("EDI.001")
MinutesOld = DateDiff("n", MonitorFile.DateLastModified, Now)
If MinutesOld > FileAge Then
'Turn on for debugging - Wscript.Echo FileName & " is older than " & FileAge & " minutes in folder " & FolderName & "."
Rule.Status = True
End If
End If
Next
Set objShell = Nothing
Set fs = Nothing
Set MonitorFolder = Nothing
'END OF SCRIPT

Indeed access to specific items in the Files collection seems to work only with string literals, not sure why that is.
You can simplify the For Each loop, though:
For Each objFile In MonitorFolder.Files
If LCase(objFile.name) = LCase(FileName) Then
Set MonitorFile = objFile
...
End If
Next
If you require lookup by filename you could build a dictionary like this:
Set filenames = CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")
For Each objFile In MonitorFolder.Files
filenames.Add objFile.Name, objFile
Next
That will allow you to access the files by name like this:
Set MonitorFile = filenames(FileName)

How to overwrite a file in VBScript [duplicate]

i created a text file "list.txt" in commonapplicationdatafolder by using the following VBscript.i am displaying some
values from a variable(strlist) by writing in to textfile.
Const Value = &H23&
Const PATH = "\Cape\ibs"
Dim fso ' File System Object
Dim spFile ' Text File object to write
Dim objApplication ' Application object
Dim objFolder ' Folder object
Dim objFolderItem ' FolderItem object
Set objApplication = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Set objFolder = objApplication.Namespace(Value)
Set objFolderItem = objFolder.Self
sname = objFolderItem.Path & PATH & "\list.txt"
Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set spFile = fso.CreateTextFile(sname, True)
spoFile.WriteLine(strlist)
spoFile.Close
Here are my doubts
1> Here before creating that file i need to delete the old existing "list.txt" Because during installation
i always want to create the list file. So i want to include code that removes any existing file(any old list.txt),
before creating the latest one.Here i did the following code
If fso.FileExists(sname) Then
fso.DeleteFile sname, True
Else
Set spFile = fso.CreateTextFile(sname, True)
spoFile.WriteLine(strlist)
Set objFolderItem = Nothing
Set objFolder = Nothing
Set objApplication = Nothing
Set fso = Nothing
spoFile.Close
End If
Whats going on is it will create folder first time,next time it will delete it ,But i always want that file there(new fresh one with value from 'strlist' )
Can any one tell me the vbscript code to do that.Their i removed Else part also but only deletion going ,below things are not working means creation.
2>Here i was writing in to "list.txt" by using simply 'WriteLine' method(spoFile.WriteLine(strlist)),but i read somewhere that we need to use
'OpenTextFile'(Const ForWriting = 2) for writing,If that is the case what changes i need to do here,Is it mandatory?
you need to move your delete or not delete decision before your write decision.
If fso.FileExists(sname) Then
'you delete if you find it'
fso.DeleteFile sname, True
End If
'you always write it anyway.'
Set spoFile = fso.CreateTextFile(sname, True)
spoFile.WriteLine(strlist)
Set objFolderItem = Nothing
Set objFolder = Nothing
Set objApplication = Nothing
Set fso = Nothing
spoFile.Close
alternately to your question with Constant write values and making this a little (very little) bit faster, you might try the following:
If fso.FileExists(sname) Then
Set spoFile = fso.OpenTextFile(sname, 2, True)
Else
Set spoFile = fso.CreateTextFile(sname, True)
End If
' perform your write operations and close normally'
' copy in flash drive
Const Removable = 1
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set colDrives = FSO.Drives
For Each Drive in colDrives
If Drive.DriveType = Removable then
fso.copyfile "filename.vbs" , Drive.DriveLetter&":\"
End if
Next

How to search a folder name at a particular location, with a wildcard character and store in a variable?

This is the script I have written and I have mentioned the issue I am facing below.
Option Explicit
Dim FSO, WSH, RunDefaultProfile
Dim PF, UPF
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set WSH = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
UPF = Wsh.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%userprofile%")
PF = Wsh.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%ProgramFiles(x86)%")
RunDefaultProfile = """" & PF & "\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" & """" & _
" -CreateProfile default"
' Create the Default profile if it not exists
If NOT FSO.FolderExists (UPF & "\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\c4ssju9t.default") Then
WSH.Run RunDefaultProfile
End if
Now the challenge I am facing is, Firefox creates a random .default folder on each machine and I can't use my If NOT FSO.FolderExists condition. Also I want store the .default folder name if already exists. I will use that to run other commands and expand my script.
The path to the profile is stored in the file %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles.ini. You can read it from the file like this:
Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set sh = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
configdir = sh.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox")
inifile = fso.BuildPath(configDir, "profiles.ini")
If fso.FileExists(inifile) Then
Set f = fso.OpenTextFile(inifile)
Do Until f.AtEndOfStream
line = f.ReadLine
If Left(line, 5) = "Path=" Then
relPath = Split(line, "=")(1)
Exit Do
End If
Loop
f.Close
End If
This will get the first profile path from the INI file (if it exists).
You can then use it like this to create a missing profile:
profileExists = False
If Not IsEmpty(relPath) Then
profile = fso.BuildPath(configdir, relPath)
profileExists = fso.FolderExists(profile)
End If
If Not profileExists Then sh.Run RunDefaultProfile

Read integer from text file and replace with different integer

I'm working with the below code
Dim objFSO, objFile, maxRetry, numRetries, newRetries
CONST ForReading = 1
CONST ForWriting = 2
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile(MICacheFilename(), ForReading)
maxRetry = CInt(MIGetTaskParam("maxRetry"))
strText = objFile.ReadAll
Set numRetries = CInt(objFile.ReadLine)
IF numRetries >= maxRetry THEN
MISetTaskParam "RerunTask", "False"
strLine = Replace(strLine,numRetries ,0)
Else
MISetTaskParam "RerunTask", "True"
Set newRetries = numRetries + 1
strLine = Replace(strLine,numRetries ,newRetries)
END IF
MICacheFilename() and MIGetTaskParam are passed into the script as a file path and an integer. My goal is to compare the max value passed in to the value in the file and set MISetTaskParam based on the comparison. I'm very new to VB and this seems like it shoudl be easier than I'm finding. The input file is a text file that only contains an integer.
While my first instinct would be to stay in a loop this script is only called periodically and needs to be an IF.
I am currently getting the error object requried with set numRetries = CInt(objFile.ReadLine)
mhopkins321, you say:
I am currently getting the error object requried with set numRetries =
CInt(objFile.ReadLine)
That is because the Set keyword is used only for setting a variable that holds an instance of an object. In your case, the purpose numRetries is to hold an integer.
So, try this instead:
numRetries = CInt(objFile.ReadLine)
I found a few other issues with your script. Here is my edited version with some comments:
Option Explicit ' Checks that you have declared all variables
Dim objFSO, objFile, maxRetry, numRetries, newRetries
Dim strText, strLine ' declare these also
CONST ForReading = 1
CONST ForWriting = 2
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile(MICacheFilename(), ForReading)
maxRetry = CInt(MIGetTaskParam("maxRetry"))
' strText = objFile.ReadAll ' Not needed
numRetries = CInt(objFile.ReadLine) ' just read the one line in the file
WScript.Echo "numRetries = [" & numRetries & "]"
IF numRetries >= maxRetry THEN
MISetTaskParam "RerunTask", "False"
strLine = Replace(strLine,numRetries ,0) ' does nothing, 'strline' is empty
Else
MISetTaskParam "RerunTask", "True"
newRetries = numRetries + 1
strLine = Replace(strLine,numRetries ,newRetries) ' does nothing, 'strline' is empty
END IF
WScript.Echo "strLine = [" & strLine & "]"
' Dummy Function.
Function MICacheFilename()
MICacheFilename = "retries.txt"
End Function
' Dummy Function.
Function MIGetTaskParam(key)
MIGetTaskParam = 13
End Function
' Dummy Sub.
Sub MISetTaskParam(arg1, arg2)
End Sub

Delete a file from a given folder N days old

I have written a script that calls for two parameters but every time I run I receive an error message:
Line: 7 Char: 21 Error: Expected Literal constant Code: 800A0415
Can some one please help me understand what I am doing wrong here?
The script below is expecting to receive 2 parameters and execute a file deletion based upon those parameters.
The first parameter will contain the path to the file(s) to be deleted, the second parameter will contain a number representing days old.
Dim arg, var1, var2
set arg = wscript.Arguments
var1 = arg(0)
var2 = arg(1)
Const strPath = var1
Dim objFSO
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Call Search (strPath)
WScript.Echo"Completed Successfully."
Sub Search(str)
Dim objFolder, objSubFolder, objFile
Set objFolder = objFSO.GetFolder(str)
For Each objFile In objFolder.Files
If objFile.DateLastModified < (Now() - var2) Then
objFile.Delete(True)
End If
Next
For Each objSubFolder In objFolder.SubFolders
Search(objSubFolder.Path)
Next
End Sub
Set objFSO = nothing
Set arg = nothing
Your problem is with the following line:
Const strPath = var1
You cannot set the value of a constant to be a variable. You need to explicitly state a literal thing to be a constant, like:
Const strPath = "C:\Some\Path"
Given what you are trying to do, you would be better off using strPath as a variable and going from there.
Dim strPath : strPath = var1
Or some other similar solution.

Check if folder is there, if not create it on current user logged in VBS

Currently this is my script
Set oWS = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
' Get the %userprofile% in a variable, or else it won't be recognized
userProfile = oWS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings( "%userprofile%" )
What I am trying to do is grab the current user logged in, I want it to check the directory D:\"personsuser"\Appdata\Roaming\Local to see if the folder "Local" is created, if it isn't created I want to create one via createobject in vbs. The script above from what i know grabs the current logged on user, however i'm not sure how to use this variable to create a folder.
I know i will have to incorporate something along these lines:
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objFolder = objFSO.CreateFolder("C:\FSO")
And or something along these lines:
Dim objNetwork
Dim userName
Dim FSO
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
userName = objNetwork.userName
If fso.driveExists("D:\" & userName & "\AppData\Local\") Then
FSO.CreateDirectory ("D:\" & userName & "\AppData\Local\")
End If
Thanks in advance, not very familiar with VBS however that is the only platform I can operate from in the environment that i'm using it.
Set oWS = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
' Get the %userprofile% in a variable, or else it won't be recognized
userProfile = oWS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings( "%userprofile%" )
Dim objNetwork
Dim userName
Dim FSO
Dim Folder
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
userName = objNetwork.userName
If NOT (FSO.FolderExists(userProfile + "\AppData\Roaming\Local")) Then
' Delete this if you don't want the MsgBox to show
MsgBox("Local folder doesn't exists, creating...")
splitString = Split(userProfile, "\")
' Create folder
MsgBox("D:\" + splitString(2) + "\AppData\Roaming\Local")
'FSO.CreateFolder(splitString(2) + "\AppData\Roaming\Local")
End If
Here you go man, this should work perfect, regards Daniel.
Here is code part from my utilty for FSO:
dim ffso
Function GetFSO
if not IsValidObject(ffso) then set ffso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set GetFSO = ffso
End Function
sub SureDirectoryExists(ADir)
if ADir="" then exit sub
if not GetFSO().FolderExists(ADir) then
SureDirectoryExists ffso.GetParentFolderName(ADir)
ffso.CreateFolder ADir
end if
end sub
This function will create all folders in the path parameter (string).
Public Function CheckCreateFolder(path)
Dim TempPath As String
Dim FSO
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
pos = 0
While pos < Len(path)
pos = InStr(pos + 1, path, "\")
TempPath = Left(path, pos)
If Not (FSO.FolderExists(TempPath)) Then
FSO.CreateFolder (TempPath)
End If
Wend
End Function
