Bash Script Not Working Bandwidth Shaping - bash

I hope this is an easy answer
Problems:
I placed the following bash script called learn-address.sh in the following folder:
vi /etc/openvpn/netem/learn-address.sh
Added the following (2) lines to the .conf file:
script-security 3
learn-address /etc/openvpn/netem/learn-address.sh
And applied the following permission to the learn-address script:
chmod 755 /etc/openvpn/netem/learn-address.sh
However, the script does update the files ($ip.classid and $ip.dev)
in the tmp file and passes the variables correctly
But the bash script does not execute the tc class and filter commands (there is no change to qdisc)
What permissions would I use on the script to execute the tc class and filter commands when the learn-address script is called when a user connects to OpenVPN or is there something else that I missed?

The calls to tc here are occurring before dev is defined, which happens later after you've parsed the function arguments and either called bwlimit-enable or bwlimit-disable. It looks like you want to move those two calls:

How can I instruct my the bash script to not attempt to re-connect if to my rsync daemon if the process lock.file already exists? (as to prevent the bash script from attempting to infinitely create new connections after the first connection has already been made)?

Thanks to #james-brown I now have multiple ways to ensure my script runs once.. correctly...
Solution 1 (quick & dirty):
flock -n <lock file> <script>
Or in my case, using this command to execute my cron job:
flock -n /var/run/rsyncd-home.lock /path/to/my_script.sh
caveat - this leaves your script vulnerable to stale lock files that may prevent execution on the next time interval.
Solution 2:
So, I used a bullet-proof method (so I think... I invite folks to correct my understanding, if need be)...
First, I did apt install procmail, then removed/hashed out the below two lines in my /etc/rsyncd.conf and ran systemctl restart rsync:

The script will only connect to rsync daemon once, it will re-connect on dropped connections thanks to the while loop, and there is no danger of stale lock files interrupting my backup process at future intervals... (i.e. problem solved).

Configure U-boot using Yocto

I am new to U-boot and trying to modify some configuration in the U-boot. I am using STM32MP1 based Avenger96 boiard with Yocto Project and U-boot bootloader. Now I want to modify some U-boot variables like bootcount and bootlimit. For example I want to set bootlimit variable to 4 and if limit is reached, u-boot should run the altbootcmd instead of usual bootcmd.
To make this work I need to edit CONFIG_EXTRA_ENV_SETTINGS statement in the u-boot sources.
But I am not sure how to find the location of this file to be modified.

Getting an error for unexpected else in bash

[SOLVED]
I'm pretty new tho bash-/shell-scripting and trying setup a check for ip address on a server which gets about once a week a new ip.
The script will then send the new ip to the users.
My problem is, that I'm getting a syntax-error in the last if-else statement for "unexpected" else and can wrap my head around why.
My first iteration didn't use functions, but instead one multi lined if-else which got me the same error. The functions on their own seem to work just fine.

How to programmatically create a PPTP VPN connection on macOS Sierra/High Sierra?

Apple removed high-level PPTP support in macOS Sierra from its network configuration system. However, the PPP internals are all still there, including /usr/sbin/pppd and /etc/ppp/.
How can I programmatically initiate a PPTP VPN connection on macOS Sierra / High Sierra using what's left?
Answer:
This method creates a PPTP connection that doesn't send all traffic and doesn't override other DNS providers, meaning it works with multiple simultaneous VPN connections each having different DNS search domains, and closes it in an orderly fashion.
Not sending all traffic requires you to know the VPN subnet beforehand. If you don't, you must send all traffic (see below), since vanilla PPP/LCP has no means to tell the client its subnet (although theoretically the ip-up and ip-down scripts could guess it from the received IP address).
Save this perl as /usr/local/bin/pptp:

The last 4 options are connection-specific. Note the password is stored cleartext. chown root:wheel and chmod 600 is recommended. nodetach, ipcp-accept-local, ipcp-accept-remote, noipdefault are critical.

If the VPN has a DNS search domain (i.e. somehost.office.acme.com), create a file in /etc/resolver/ named after the DNS suffix, like /etc/resolver/office.acme.com, with contents like:

domain office.acme.com
Note that this requires knowing the destination domain & nameserver beforehand. Theoretically ip-up & ip-down could create & delete this file on demand.
To send all traffic (& if you don't know the destination subnet), uncomment #defaultroute in the PPP connection file and leave the ip-up & ip-down entries blank (e.g. the VPNBook example). To override your DNS with the VPN's, uncomment usepeerdns.

Minimal web server using netcat

I'm trying to set up a minimal web server using netcat (nc). When the browser calls up localhost:1500, for instance, it should show the result of a function (date in the example below, but eventually it'll be a python or c program that yields some data).
My little netcat web server needs to be a while true loop in bash, possibly as simple as this:

When I try this the browser shows the currently available data during the moment when nc starts. I want the browser displays the data during the moment the browser requests it, though. How can I achieve this?
Try this:

The -cmakes netcat execute the given command in a shell, so you can use echo. If you don't need echo, use -e. For further information on this, try man nc. Note, that when using echo there is no way for your program (the date-replacement) to get the browser request. So you probably finally want to do something like this:

Where yourprogram must do the protocol stuff like handling GET, sending HTTP 200 etc.
I had the problem where I wanted to return the result of executing a bash command:

The problem you are facing is that nc does not know when the web client is done with its request so it can respond to the request.
A web session should go something like this.

The server closes the TCP session.
Lines that begin with "\n" are simply empty lines without even a space and contain nothing more than a new line character.
I have my bash httpd launched by xinetd, xinetd tutorial. It also logs date, time, browser IP address, and the entire browser request to a log file, and calculates Content-Length for the Server header response.

I had the same need/problem but nothing here worked for me (or I didn't understand everything), so this is my solution.

Here is a beauty of a little bash webserver, I found it online and forked a copy and spruced it up a bit - it uses socat or netcat I have tested it with socat -- it is self-contained in one-script and generates its own configuration file and favicon.
By default it will start up as a web enabled file browser yet is easily configured by the configuration file for any logic. For files it streams images and music (mp3's), video (mp4's, avi, etc) -- I have tested streaming various file types to Linux,Windows and Android devices including a smartwatch!
I think it streams better than VLC actually. I have found it useful for transferring files to remote clients who have no access beyond a web browser e.g. Android smartwatch without needing to worry about physically connecting to a USB port.
If you want to try it out just copy and paste it to a file named bashttpd, then start it up on the host with $> bashttpd -s
Then you can go to any other computer (presuming the firewall is not blocking inbound tcp connections to port 8080 -- the default port, you can change the port to whatever you want using the global variables at the top of the script). http://bashttpd_server_ip:8080

Ah yes, my nc were not exactly the same as yours, it did not like the -p option.
If you're using Apline Linux, the BusyBox netcat is slightly different:

Closes connection after 1 sec, so curl doesn't hang on it.
Type in nc -h and see if You have -e option available. If yes, You can create a script, for example:

Note that -e option needs to be enabled at compilation to be available.
I think the problem that all the solution listed doesn't work, is intrinsic in the nature of http service, the every request established is with a different client and the response need to be processed in a different context, every request must fork a new instance of response...
The current solution I think is the -e of netcat but I don't know why doesn't work... maybe is my nc version that I test on openwrt...

The socat and netcat samples on github doesn't works for me, but the socat that I used works.
Actually, the best way to close gracefully the connection is to send the Content-Length header like following. Client (like curl will close the connection after receiving the data.
