How add more than one dependency in Gradle build file? - gradle

This question may be silly but, I could not find a simple example how to add more than one dependency to dependencies closure in a gradle file the example given in the documentations is :
dependencies {
compile 'commons-beanutils:commons-beanutils:1.8.3'
}
What if I want add spring and Hibernate and other ?

dependencies {
compile 'commons-beanutils:commons-beanutils:1.8.3'
compile 'some:other-dependency:1.8.3'
}

Gradle, OSGI and dependency management

I'm new to Gradle, please, help me to understand the following. I'm trying to build an OSGI web app via Intellij Idea + Gradle. I've found that Gradle has OSGI plugin, which is described here:

But I have no idea on how to add dependency on, for example, org.apache.felix.dependencymanager which is OSGI bundle. So, I need this jar while compilation, and I don't need it in my resulting jar. I think, that I need something similar to maven 'provided' scope, or something like that.
P.S. Does anyone understand, what 'TBD' means in Gradle documentation? Does this means it has to be implemented in future, or is some mechanism is implemented, but is not yet described in docs?
Please check out the plugin I wrote, osgi-run, which was designed to make it extremely easy to play with OSGi without using any external tools like Eclipse (though osgi-run can generate a Manifest file for you, which you can point at from your IDE to get IDE OSGi support - this is what I do using IntelliJ), just Gradle.
With osgi-run, you just add a dependency to whatever you want as with any Java project... whether it should be provided by the environment or not does not matter at compile time, this is a deployment-time concern.
For example, add to your build.gradle file:
apply plugin: 'osgi' // or other OSGi plugin if you prefer
repositories {
mavenCentral() // add repos to get your dependencies from
}
dependencies {
compile "org.apache.felix:org.apache.felix.dependencymanager:4.3.0"
}
Note: the osgi plugin is just required to turn your jar into a bundle. osgi-run does not do that.
If you have any runtime dependencies that should be present in the OSGi environment but not in the compile classpath, do something like this:
dependencies {
...
osgiRuntime 'org.apache.felix:org.apache.felix.configadmin:1.8.8'
}
Now write some code, and once you're ready to run a OSGi container with your stuff in it, add these lines to the build.gradle file:
// this should be the first line
plugins {
id "com.athaydes.osgi-run" version "1.4.3"
}
...
// deployment to OSGi container config
runOsgi {
// which bundles do you want to add?
// transitive deps will be automatically added
bundles += project

Run:
gradle createOsgiRuntime
And find your full OSGi environment, ready to run, in the build/osgi directory.
Run it with:
build/osgi/run.sh # or run.bat in Windows
You can even run it during the build already:
gradle runOsgi
So you probably want to make your own provided configuration.

// add the configurations to the compile classpath but not runtime

Also the suggestion above about using the bndtool directly instead of the gradle provided osgi plugin is a good one. The gradle plugin has many deficiencies and is really just a wrapper to the bndtool anyways. Also the gradle team has declared they do not have the bandwidth or expertise to fix the osgi plugin [1].

How do I use only file based dependencies in gradle instead of specifying groupId:artifactId:versionId

I have the following entry in my gradle file
dependencies {
compile 'org.A:A:1.0'
}
which downloads 'org.B:B:1.0' because that's it's dependency.(not mentioned explicitly in gradle)
What I want to use in my project is A* and B* which are shadows(changed namespace) of A and B respectively.
Now, I have specified the dependency for A* as
dependencies{
compile file('libs/A*.jar')
}
But, this one still downloads 'org.B:B:1.0'
How do I wire the gradle to use file('libs/B*.jar')?
The first solution that comes to mind is to exclude the transitive dependency of compile 'org.A:A:1.0'
This works like this:
dependencies {
compile('org.A:A:1.0') {
exclude 'org.B:B:1.0'
}
}

As mentioned in the comments, file dependencies can't have transitive dependencies. So A*.jar either has the contents of the B.jar rolled into it somehow, or you have B.jar on the build path somewhere else.
File dependencies are generally a tool of last resort, they do not participate in conflict resolution; you need a dependency repository like maven or ivy for that.

Set classpath from Gradle Plugin

When writing a gradle plugin, is it possible to add dependencies to the compile and testCompile classpath for projects that apply the plugin?
If so, is there a simple example that you can reference?
As an example; let's say I wanted to write a plugin that, among other things, added the AWS Java API jars to a project i.e. I get the the jars on the classpath of the project where I apply the plugin allowing me to compile against them.

I am not fully sure I understand the question but you can look at the gradle war plugin (https://github.com/gradle/gradle/blob/master/subprojects/plugins/src/main/groovy/org/gradle/api/plugins/WarPlugin.java) which defines new tasks providedCompile which extends compile

In your example, its totally possible that the plugin defines its own dependencies like in a normal build.gradle file

dependencies {
compile "com.amazonaws:aws-java-sdk-ec2:1.10.2"
}
see for example the was plugin (https://github.com/classmethod-aws/gradle-aws-plugin/blob/develop/build.gradle) when you apply this plugin in your own build the aws dependencies will be downloaded and available to your build.

Is there a way to add classpath/directories for dependencies on Gradle?

I have a new project, it depends on classes at legacy project, not jar files but actual classes.
How can I make these directories a dependency for gradle compile?

Determine source of transitive dependency

I have a project in which I am using sl4j with log4j. I recently added a few new dependencies to my project, and one of these new dependencies that I added is including a transitive dependency to logback-classic, which includes another binding for sj4j.
I want to get rid of logback, but I have no clue which of my direct dependencies added the transitive dependency so that I can exclude it.
In maven I know how to get the entire graph of dependencies to determine which is the source of a transitive dependency, but I have no clue of how to do this with gradle.
Does anyone knows how to get the source dependency of a transitive dependency with gradle?
To show the whole dependency tree for each class path, use:
> gradle dependencies
If you are only interested in a particular class path, use (say):
> gradle dependencies --configuration compile
Use the -p option to run on a sub-project.
To show who pulls in a particular dependency onto a particular class path, and how any version conflicts were resolved, use (say):
> gradle dependencyInsight --dependency logback --configuration compile
Note that you can also exclude a dependency from a whole class path (or multiple). Usually this is more reliable than excluding a particular transitive dependency. For example:
configurations.all*.exclude module: "logback-classic"

I used this code to resolve a dependency issue between logback and log4j:
configurations.all {
resolutionStrategy.dependencySubstitution {
substitute module('org.apache.logging.log4j:log4j-slf4j-impl') using module ('ch.qos.logback:logback-classic:1.2.3')
}
}
This solution finds any dependencies on log4j-slf4j-impl and instructs it to choose the one from logback (this is a spring app). This solution was surprisingly difficult to track down, but likely very useful in many situations.
